With the first School on “Elastomers” in 2001, the European Polymer Federation
(EPF) has undertaken a new task in the educational area, aiming at the creation
of a European standard in Polymer Science and Technology teaching. The EPF
Schools supply an updated tutorial approach to the most recent and fast
developing areas on which rationalized and comprehensive overviews are not
yet available. By launching this initiative, EPF fulfils once more its mission to
make national achievements available Europewide. The 2015 School addresses
basic aspects and recent advances in designing and role of interfaces and
interphases in polymer-based materials. In fact, most of the polymer materials
display a multiphase structure: nanostructured and microphase polymer blends,
filled polymers including nanocomposites, fiber-based materials, coatings, etc.
This means that interfaces as well as interphases play a crucial role in many
systems. As a consequence, their design from molecular and nanoscale, i.e.
from macromolecular chemistries, physical processes such as phase separation
and/or crystallization, or driven processing, is required in order to provide the
targeted physical behaviors to the resulting polymer materials. In addition,
conventional and innovative characterization techniques such as spectroscopies
and microscopies could be used to evidence directly and indirectly the
interfacial regions for development of a complete understanding of their
influence in macroscopic behaviours. According to their essential role and the
exciting related researches and developments of interfaces, there is a strong
need of having a review of the existing knowledge on interfaces and interphases
which are already (or could be) considered.
The School will be of particular interest to polymer scientists and engineers
dealing with polymer chemistry, design of nanomaterials, polymer blends,
polymer-based composites, polymer multilayers, etc as well as multiphase
polymer materials in academic research and industrial R&D. The School will also
be of interest to marketing and technical assistance sectors as well as to
teachers. The residential character of the School in the beautiful environment of
Palazzo Feltrinelli on Garda Lake will supply the informal and relaxed
atmosphere for a fruitful exchange of ideas among lecturers and attendees all
the week long.
The program includes 16 courses by top-level international experts as
well as a poster session for participants willing to present their research
work
English is the official language of the EPF summer schools.
