UCEAP Language and Culture Program in Florence Summer 2013 Pre-ILP Practicum Instructor: Dr. Mariarosa Mettifogo Contact: [email protected] Office hours: Mon-Thu, 12:30-1:30pm Class schedule: Mon & Wed, 14.00-16.00 Hours of instruction: 28 Units completed: 3 Course description The aim of the pre-ILP Practicum is to prepare students enrolled in the Bologna immersion year or semester program to easily adjust to and succeed in the Italian academic environment. Students will learn about the organization and structures of Italian universities and the main differences between the American and the Italian university system. They will be trained to study effectively in Italian and to prepare for written and oral tests. They will also learn how to communicate appropriately with students and professors as well as to deal with other practical aspects of their life in Italy, such as looking for an accommodation, finding roommates, locating books in libraries, and more. The course is activity oriented and based on problem solving techniques. Using different types of authentic materials, in each class we will focus on the acquisition and development of specific vocabulary, competences and skills related to the demands of the Italian academic experience. Students will be engaged in a series of in-class and out-of-class activities such as note-taking during lectures in Italian, site visits, conversations with Italian students, analysis, summary, and discussions of academic texts, oral presentations and debates in Italian. By the end of the course each student will have completed a portfolio of different documents prepared in class and at home. Individual presentations will assess progress in oral exposition of academic subjects while written reports and a paper (tesina) will boost writing skills and expand the student’s vocabulary so as to include more and more specialized terms. The course will close with an oral final exam modeled on those administered at Italian universities that will count toward 25% of the final grade. Homework, assignments, exams Portfolio containing the following documents (D) prepared in class and / or at home: Curriculum vitae in Italian (D1) emails to professors (D2 & D2bis) looking for room / roommates: writing an ad, answering an ad (D3 & D3bis) rewrite of class notes (D4) Length and formatting style of documents will be specified in class. Documents must be turned in at the beginning of class on the first day of class after they are assigned. Late work will result in a lower grade (a third of a letter grade per day). Possible topics for the individual presentations: - presentations of topics in art history / individual artists / works of art related to Florence - history of the Italian language / Accademia della crusca - history of political thought in Italy / Machiavelli and The Prince - presentations of Florentine / Renaissance authors and samples of their works Presentations are about 15 minutes each. Students must organize and practice their presentation at home so as to cover all the major points of their topic in 15 minutes. For each presentation there will be two respondents who will ask questions to the presenter. The content of all presentations will become part of the materials tested during the oral final exam. Tesina: 4-5 pages long, double spaced. Must have a meaningful title, clear thesis stated in introductory paragraph, a central body developing main ides, and conclusion. Students will propose a topic or relevance to their field of studies or previous research and discuss it with the instructor. Oral exam: Study and presentation of texts read during the course as well as content of lecture and presentations.
