il volto della nuova generazione

Entra nei personaggi con grazia ma anche con
molta determinazione: sul set è sempre puntuale,
concentrata, mai distratta, …Insomma, proprio
un soldato, “il soldato Carolina”, come si è spesso
definita per prima, ridendoci su. Affidabile e molto
professionale, ha nella solarità che regala anche solo
con un sorriso il tratto forte del suo carattere.
Che è fatto di determinazione, tenacia, molta
attitudine allo studio e alla professionalità.

Sì, la Crescentini - recentemente premiata dai ragazzi del Vittorio Veneto Film Festival - tra le attrici della nuova generazione è comunque una certezza. Sarà perché
ha studiato in un liceo di quelli dove fai i conti con la regole ‘serie’, o forse perché
i conti avrebbe dovuto imparare a farli in famiglia, una famiglia di commercialisti
‘tradita’ per il set, o forse perché al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, dov’è
entrata (dopo aver cominciato con Cristiano Censi e Isabella Del Bianco) ha avuto
una vera folgorazione per un maestro come Giuliano Montaldo.
Ma Carolina in pochi anni è cresciuta davvero molto. Il palmares dei premi personali, oltre alla considerazione della stampa e del pubblico, lo dimostra: quattro
nomination e un Nastro d’Argento già portati a casa. E, negli anni, una candidatura
anche ai David di Donatello. “Dico sempre che bisogna fare questo lavoro come si
va in palestra: esercizio, impegno e tanti provini”, commenta Carolina. Che, dopo
l’ultimo film di Ferzan Ozpetek, “Allacciate le cinture”, è di nuovo sul set, sempre
più richiesta anche dal cinema d’autore. Un genere particolarmente congeniale alla
ragazza, che ha cominciato, guarda caso, proprio dal training con Montaldo.
“Se a insegnarmi lo stile è stato il grande Piero Tosi, che all’inizio diceva che vestire
me era come vestire una sedia, considero Giuliano il mio maestro. Da lui ho imparato tutto e proprio con lui, come regista, ho fatto l’esperienza straordinaria de ‘I
demoni di San Pietroburgo’”, dice entusiasta.
Romana, classe 1980, Carolina Crescentini ha cominciato tra cortometraggi e fiction. Nel 2007 il primo film da protagonista: è “Notte prima degli esami-Oggi” e
il regista, Fausto Brizzi, la vuole accanto a Nicolas Vaporidis nel ruolo di Azzurra,
la ragazza che nuota con i delfini. Monteleone, Montaldo, Massimo Venier, Ponti, Lucini… Arriva il premio Giuseppe De Santis come migliore attrice emergente
dell’anno. E gli impegni si moltiplicano: “20 sigarette su Nassiryia”, con la regia di
Aureliano Amadei, il grande successo di “Boris”, di nuovo Montaldo, questa volta
in un film contemporaneo come “L’industriale”, con Pierfrancesco Favino. Carolina
si rinnova anche nella commedia d’autore, da “Una famiglia perfetta” a “Allacciate
le cinture”.
A proposito, le piace molto il viaggio…
“Adoro scoprire cose nuove, mi fa piacere tornare perché sono molto italiana e sento le mie radici, ma amo partire. Portandomi dietro sempre, per abitudine, qualcosa
di casa, dal the che preferisco ai miei cd favoriti”. Segno che non è proprio una
nomade, anche se a volte si è definita un po’ così.
Ma anche un sintomo di ordine, non solo mentale, in un’allegra confusione che la fa
sembrare a priva vista diversa… “Mi hanno definito la regina della metodica: tengo
tutto nella mia agenda” racconta “che è zeppa di foglietti, post it… Ma è lì che
tengo tutto in ordine sapendo dove sono le cose che cerco perché la mia memoria
è soprattutto fotografica”.
Due registi che ama?
“Esclusi gli italiani direi in Francia Francois Ozon e a Hollywood … beh diciamo che
una commedia con Ben Stiller la girerei…”
All’ultimo Festival di Cannes si è parlato molto di Grace… Ma è vero che
il nome, sua mamma, lo ha scelto perché le piaceva proprio Carolina di
Monaco?
“Ebbene sì, e quando ero piccola di questo nome mi vergognavo un po’” ammette
Carolina, che a volte, proprio per questo, da piccola si presentava come “Carlotta”…
Capricci infantili o forse adolescenziali di una “bambina” di ieri che oggi scrive, di
tanto in tanto, favole per i bambini che, magari, un giorno verranno. Dice che “forse
un giorno le leggerà a un figlio” ma intanto in questi anni le ha perfino raccontate
a Thelma, la sua “cagnona”…
Chissà se le racconta anche di quando, per superare quella sua tendenza ad essere
troppo precisa, razionale, organizzata le ha fatto scegliere la scuola di recitazione
quasi come una terapia??
Quando in qualche intervista glielo ricordano, Carolina Crescentini sorride e ricorda
quella prima volta, in un saggio teatrale, quando nei panni di Nina, recitando un
classico come “Il Gabbiano” di Cechov, guardò tutto il tempo suo padre per cogliere le sue reazioni e capire se stesse superando quel filo di diffidenza che sentiva
nell’aria: “mi piace dare emozioni. E spero di continuare a farlo, passionale oppure
ironica o intensa da non pensare ad altro…proprio come quel giorno!”

The essence of the new generation
She gets into her role gracefully and with great determination:
she is always punctual on the set and maintains her concentration without ever distracting herself…in other words she is
just like a soldier “soldier Carolina”, as she often calls herself,
laughing it off. Reliable and very professional, a strong feature
of her character is her cheerful nature, which her smile reveals.
A character featuring determination, perseverance, attitude towards studying and competence.
That’s right, Carolina Crescentini – recently awarded at the Vittorio Veneto Film Festival
– as an actress belonging to the new generation, is a fact. Perhaps as a result of having
studied at a high school with ‘strict’ rules or perhaps because she followed the same
rules at home with her family, a family of accountants ‘betrayed’ by the set, or perhaps
because at the Italian National Film School (‘Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia’)
which she joined after having started with Cristiano Censi and Isabella Del Bianco, she
had a real perception, for a maestro like Giuliano Montaldo.
Carolina in a short time matured considerably. Her personal record of achievements, in
addition to the esteem of press and the public, shows it: she has already received four
nominations and a Silver Ribbon. She also received a nomination for the David di Donatello Award, through the years. “I always say that this profession should be done in the
same way as going to the gym: exercise, commitment and many auditions”, comments
Carolina. After her latest film by Ferzan Ozpetek, “Allacciate le cinture”, she is back on
the set, in great demand also for auteur films. A particularly suitable genre for her as she
started her training with Montaldo.
“If the great Piero Tosi taught me my style, initially saying that to dress me was like
dressing a chair, I consider Giuliano my maestro. He taught me everything and I had an
extraordinary experience with him as director in ‘The Demons of St. Petersburg’, she
says enthusiastically.
Roman, born in 1980, Carolina Crescentini began with short films and fictions. In 2007
for the first time she starred in a leading role in the film: “Notte prima degli esami – Oggi”
where director Fausto Brizzi chose her for the part of Azzurra, the girl who swam with
the dolphins, next to Nicolas Vaporidis. Monteleone, Montaldo, Massimo Venier, Ponti,
Lucini…she received the Giuseppe De Santis award as best performance of the year
by a younger actor. Her commitments increased: “20 sigarette su Nassiryia”, directed
by Aureliano Amadei, the huge success of “Boris”, then again Montaldo, this time in a
contemporary film like “The Entrepreneur” with Pierfrancesco Favio. Carolina also modernized her comedy films, from “A perfect Family” to “Allacciate le cinture”.
Apparently you love travelling…
“I adore discovering new things, I am pleased to come back because I am very Italian
and feel my roots are here, though I love going away. I always take something from
home with me, such as my favourite tea or my favourite cd’s, it’s a habit”. It’s a sign that
she is not exactly a nomad, even though she has sometimes defined herself as being
a bit of one.
It is also synonymous of tidiness, not only mental, in a joyful confusion which makes
her seem a little different at first sight…”I have been called the queen of method: I keep
everything in my diary” she says “which is packed with bits of paper, post-its…But that

is where everything is kept in order and I know where anything I am looking for is,
because I have a photographic memory above all”.
Can you name two of your favourite directors?
“Excluding Italians I would say Francois Ozon in France and as for Hollywood…well
lets say that I wouldn’t mind doing a comedy with Ben Stiller…”
During the recent Cannes Film Festival much talk was made about Grace…is it true that your mother chose your name because she liked Princess Caroline?
“Yes that’s true, and when I was small I was a bit ashamed of my name” admits
Carolina, which is why when she was small she would sometimes present herself as
“Carlotta”…
Whims of a child or a teenager, of yesterday’s “child” who sometimes writes tales for
the children she may one day have. She says that “one day she may possibly read
them out to her children” but in the meantime she has also read them out to Thelma,
her “big dog”…
I wonder if she also recounts about when she decided to attend acting
school as a therapy, to overcome her tendency of being over precise, rational, organized??
When some interviewers remind her of this Carolina Crescentini smiles and recalls the
first time at a theatre recital when in the part of Nina, in a classic like “Il Gabbiano” by
Cechov, she looked at her father the whole time getting a glimpse of his reaction to see
if she was going beyond that boundary of scepticism she could feel in the air: “I like
to give emotions. And I hope to continue this way, passionately, ironically or intensely,
without thinking about anything else…just like I did that time”. []
