GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
The main purpose is to develop in 16 lessons the basic aptitude and
confidence in spoken French to get over the difficulty in dealing with
French tourists on a day-to-day basis as well as in explaining to them
different cultural aspects linked with Sri Lanka. For example:
answering numerous questions a tourist may raise; explain and
describe things in basic French, introduction to different sites, etc.
A particular emphasize will be given to French pronunciation through
short phonetics workshops monitored by a French native teacher.

DELF-DALF INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMAS
DELF DALF diplomas are international certificates awarded to basic,
intermediate students (DELF – Diplôme élémentaire de langue française /
French language elementary diploma) and advanced students (DALF –
Diplôme avancé de langue française / French language advanced diploma).
The DELF DALF diplomas are divided into six different levels that
correspond with the Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages. While DELF encompasses the first 4 levels, DALF corresponds to
the last 2 levels; each exam tests listening, reading, writing and speaking
skills of students.
These official French proficiency exams are administered by the Centre international d'études pédagogiques International Centre for Pedagogical Studies - (CIEP); this centre is part of the French Ministry of Education, Higher
Education and Research, and is the main operating partner for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International
Development for the French language.
Apart from allowing a student with DELF B2 or DALF C1 or C2 to opt out of a French university's language entrance
exam, having one of these French certifications is evidently an extra and a highly valid qualification for job seekers.
Alliance Française offers 6 levels of courses corresponding to the 6 levels of the international DELF DALF exam system.

Cinnamon Colomboscope is a multidisciplinary arts festival, taking place every year on the initiative of
the Goethe institute, the British Council and the Alliance Française de Kotte, gathered in the Cluster
EUNIC in Colombo, with the participation of a number of European and South Asian delegations.
For its 4th edition, Cinnamon Colomboscope festival will focus on the theme “the digitization of our
living environment”, presenting and discussing contemporary art that reflects on how digital
technologies impact and shape the perception and conception of the world.
Today, a few years after the end of the civil war, Sri Lanka seeks to find its unique position in an
increasingly globalized, business driven world. Digital technology plays an important role in this
endeavor. In this framework, German curator of the festival, Susanne Jaschko, has identified three
thematic clusters, to look at multiple aspects of digitization in culture and society:

feeling and perceiving the world.

Dans un contexte de reconstruction et d’ouverture aux nouvelles technologies, Cinnamon
Colomboscope 2016 se conçoit tel un terrain d’expérimentation pour lier art contemporain et
technologies numériques. Ce festival cherche ainsi à promouvoir des œuvres d’art produites grâce aux
nouveaux médias ou qui reflètent la culture numérique contemporaine dans le but d’engager un
dialogue entre les artistes sri lankais et étrangers. La curatrice du festival, Susanne Jaschko, a choisi
d’inviter des artistes d’Europe et d’Asie du Sud à explorer les multiples aspects de la numérisation de
la société à travers trois grands ensembles thématiques : « Deep sensing » (perception en profondeur),
« Kaleidoscopia » (kaléidoscopie) et « Under the Cloud » (sous le nuage).
“Cinnamon Colomboscope 2016 will provide a testing ground for this new liaison between
contemporary art and the digital in Sri Lanka and will call on artists and audiences alike to engage
themselves in artworks resulting from it”.

Dr Susanne Jaschko is a Berlin based independent curator, author and lecturer. She studied art history,
history of architecture and linguistics. Since 2012, she works as freelance author for ART+COM, studio

Selection of the finalists
After a competition based on writing short essays in French, five Sri Lankans and one Maldivian have
been short-listed for the final selection stage, consisting of an interview by a Jury. Participants were
competing to win a 10-day trip to Paris, to participate in seminars and conferences on health and
human rights, this year’s topic for the
competition.
The two winners, both Sri Lankan, and
studying with the objective of joining the
educational sector, are Ms Poornima
Thuduwage and Mr Joshua Perera. They have
impressed the jury with their ability to debate
and interact in French. They felt strongly that
the right to health in all its aspects should be
strengthen. They demonstrated their capacity
to communicate among the new generation
about the challenges related to the
recognition and respect of human rights in
general and health in particular.
During the French Spring Festival’s press conference to be held at the Galle Face Hotel on May 31st,
H. E. Mr Jean-Marin Schuh, French Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, will officially hand over
to the winners their invitation to go to Paris from July 3rd to 11th 2016.
Après une sélection opérée à partir de courts articles en français, cinq candidats sri lankais et une
maldivienne ont été retenus pour passer l’ultime épreuve orale du concours avec à la clef, pour deux
d’entre eux, gagner un voyage de dix jours à Paris pour participer à une série de séminaires et de
conférences sur les droits de l’homme et la santé, thème de cette édition 2016.
Les deux lauréats sont deux étudiants sri-lankais : Mlle Poornima Thuduwage et M. Joshua Perera.
Ils ont tous deux impressionné le jury par leur aisance à communiquer en français et leur grande
motivation. Ils ont démontré leur conscience des défis liés à la reconnaissance du droit à la santé
comme droit fondamental et ont fait part de leur désir de communiquer sur ce droit comme sur les
droits de l’homme en général auprès de la nouvelle génération.
S. E. M. Jean-Marin Schuh, Ambassadeur de France, remettra les prix et l’invitation officielle à se
rendre en France lors de la conférence de presse du French Spring Festival 2016, le 31 mai 2016 au

50 cartoonists have contributed to an exhibition addressing freedom of
expression through the theme of caricature and political drawing. Each panel
of the exhibition is devoted to a specific theme: censorship, internet,
corruption, women's rights, rebellions, climate, sport, racism, etc. The
drawings, made by cartoonists of 45 different nationalities, were all recently
published in their local papers and will thus illustrate how this particular
expression is actually utilized around the world. On this occasion, Sri Lankan
cartoonists will also be invited to participate.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development & Cultural Affairs, has the pleasure to support,
once again, the French Rendezvous, believing that France, like Sri Lanka, has numerous traditions in the Arts
dating back many centuries.
I am very happy to celebrate this year the fifth edition of the French Spring Festival which presents a diversity of
events in the fields of Music, Literature, Dance, Cinema, Fashion, Visual Arts, Science and Food Culture amongst
others disciplines.
In Sri Lanka like in many other countries, the French Spring Festival has become an annual event. Artists from
France as well as from Sri Lanka will present their work during the festival through performances, exhibitions and
workshops, which will be conducted to promote continuing links between artists from both countries.
Culture and the Arts bring together people of different cultures and increase our self-knowledge and mutual
understanding; this is the very spirit of the French Spring. This festival will display the creativity and originality of
French and Sri Lankan artists as well as promote cooperation and dialog between people. It will provide local
audiences the opportunity to discover innovative contemporary artistic experience. I therefore appreciate and
warmly welcome the presentation of the French Spring festival to Sri Lanka for the fifth consecutive year.
I am proud that the Ministry of Cultural Affairs is associated to this French Sri Lanka festival once more and I wish
to take this opportunity to thank the Embassy of France and the organizers of the event. Accept my warm

visuels, des sciences et de la gastronomie.
À Sri Lanka comme dans plusieurs autres pays, le printemps français est devenu un rendez-vous annuel attendu
et incontournable. Ce festival multiculturel associant artistes français et sri-lankais, fournira aux publics locaux
autant d’occasions de découvrir des formes artistiques contemporaines originales et de qualité.
Les échanges artistiques entre communautés contribuent à renforcer le dialogue et le rapprochement entre pays
de cultures différentes. La musique, la danse, le théâtre tout comme le cinéma et la photographie partagent un

tout particulièrement que soit organisé à Sri Lanka par l'Ambassade de France et le réseau des Alliances

Versailles Onirique is a long-term photographic project which started in 2013 in Versailles Palace’s
gardens and was completed in 2015. The exhibition of black and white photography presents a poetic
vision about gardens “à la française”, in all seasons and from different angles. It is an attempt to
portray the beauty and the majesty of this monument of the French historical heritage, as well as an
invitation to letting the mind wander. “Versailles Onirique” is about seeing and marveling, getting lost
into misty or snowy lanes and discovering a site steeped in France’s History.

“Versailles Onirique” est un projet de photographie argentique réalisé de 2013 à 2015 dans les jardins
du Château de Versailles. L’exposition composée de photographies en noir et blanc offre une vision
poétique des « jardins à la française », en toutes saisons et sous toutes ses coutures. La série révèle la
beauté et la majesté de ce site exceptionnel du patrimoine architectural français, invitant le spectateur
à se balader dans un univers onirique et merveilleux, dans les allées de ces jardins chargés d’histoire.

About Marie-Caroline Senlis
After graduating in Literature, Linguistics and Fine Arts studies, Marie-Caroline Senlis began her
career as a professional artist in 2002 with a photographic project in China. This first exhibition marks
the beginning of a photographic research, enriched by many travels abroad, and by her 15 years’
experience living in Asian countries, mainly in China, India, Pakistan and, today, Sri Lanka. Through her
work in black and white, she captures atmospheres and people, fixing on film hazy lights, misty nature,
and inviting the audience to a fantastic world of multiple interpretations and reinterpretations.
Exhibitions of her have been, and continue to be, exhibited worldwide.
Linguiste de formation, Marie-Caroline Senlis est
également diplômée de l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts
de Versailles. Elle débute sa carrière d’artiste
photographe en 2002, avec un projet
photographique réalisé en Chine. Cette
première exposition de son travail signe le début

Following last year COP21 Conference in Paris and the recent signature of the Paris Agreement in
New-York, the Embassy of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives will hold a seminar focusing on Natural
Heritage and promoting Sustainability: “Preserving a valuable natural heritage: Threats, opportunities
for sustainable management and eco-tourism on Sri Lankan coasts”.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Embassy of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives will
organize, on June 7th 2016, a half-day conference to exchange on the risks and potential for tourism's
expansion, more particularly on the coastal and marine areas of Sri Lanka, and the development of
eco-friendly practices. Experts and professionals from France and Sri Lanka will share experience, to
raise awareness on threats affecting Sri Lanka and seek to explore solutions through presentations and
concrete case studies. This very practical approach aims at engaging decision makers from the private
and public sectors, as well as tourists themselves, in order to mitigate negative impacts on the
environment, and to develop a more sustainable approach of tourism.
Experts from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) will identify
threats to the natural coastal and marine heritage of Sri Lanka, and members of civil society and the
private sector will be invited to share examples of good practices implemented in Sri Lanka and their
impacts on the tourism sector. French expert, Ms Céline DAMERY, specialized in the management of
marine and coastal areas will echo these arguments with perspectives from France.
À la suite de la COP21 qui s’est tenue à Paris en décembre dernier et de la signature récente de
l'Accord de Paris à New-York, l'Ambassade de France à Sri Lanka et aux Maldives tiendra en juin
prochain un séminaire sur le thème: « Patrimoine naturel et Développement durable: protection du
littoral sri-lankais, de la gestion durable à l'éco- tourisme ».
A l'occasion de la Journée internationale de l'Environnement, l'ambassade de France à Sri Lanka et
aux Maldives organisera une conférence d'une demi-journée pour échanger sur les opportunités et
risques liés au développement du secteur touristique à Sri Lanka, plus particulièrement ses zones
côtières et maritimes, et sur le potentiel de mise en œuvre de pratiques respectueuses de
l'environnement. Experts et professionnels français et sri-lankais partageront leur expérience et leur
connaissance des bonnes pratiques afin de sensibiliser les publics aux menaces qui pèsent sur le
patrimoine naturel exceptionnel de Sri Lanka. Les solutions envisageables seront explorées à travers
des présentations et des études de cas pratiques. Cette approche très concrète vise à impliquer les
décideurs des secteurs public et privé, ainsi que les touristes eux-mêmes, afin d'atténuer la part
négative du développement touristique sur l’environnement; il s’agit de promouvoir une approche
plus durable du tourisme.

True meaning and beauty gets often lost in a constant onslaught of social media and personal brand
creation. In an era filled with selfies and self-promotion, humility and substance have become lost
quality. Some rare people live these qualities through their work and passion and, thankfully share with
us these visions and emotions.
Patrick Brochard was born in 1954 and breed in art. From parents who met at l'École des Beaux-Arts,
Art flowed into his blood. Having a painter as a father, Patrick traveled the world, from the nightlife of
New Orleans to the rainforests of the Amazon and to the blissful silence of the Tibetan temples.
His early years, filled with adventures, shaped the way he would see life around him. He loved to
change the simple things that he saw through the lenses of his camera. He would add colours, vibrant
colours, so that his photograph became a piece of art. Patrick had an immense talent, and what we see
in these photos, is a small part of that. He also loved to write, but he spent the best part of his life
doing humanitarian work all across the globe. As he tried to make the world more colourful in his art,
so did he in his work.

sociaux et la promotion de soi à coup de portraits
narcissiques nous font parfois perdre de vue le
sens et la beauté des choses, l’humilité et la
substance semblent parfois en voie d’extinction.
Rares sont les personnes qui incarnent ces vertus
de par leur travail et leur passion et choisissent de
partager visions et émotions.
Né en 1954 de parents diplômés de l’École des
Beaux-Arts, Patrick Brochard a toujours baigné
dans un milieu artistique. Dès son plus jeune âge,
l’art coulait dans ses veines. Parcourant le monde
au rythme du travail de son père, peintre
renommé, Patrick découvrit à travers les voyages
les multiples tableaux que le monde nous offre,
des nuits endiablées de la Nouvelle-Orléans aux
étendues verdoyantes de la forêt amazonienne, en
passant par le calme paisible des temples tibétains.

C’est de cette jeunesse, remplie d'aventures, que lui est venue sa façon de voir la vie, vision que l’on
retrouve dans ses photos. Il aimait souvent ajouter une touche de vivacité en ajoutant des couleurs
vives ou en superposant d’autres images pour transformer un décor parfois simple en véritable
tableau.
Patrick avait un immense talent, dont ces photos ne sont qu’une infime partie. Il aimait aussi l’écriture,
mais c’est au domaine de l’humanitaire qu’il consacra la majorité de sa vie. On pourrait dire, en
quelque sorte, que ce fut là sa plus grande œuvre et qu’il transforma le monde à sa façon, en
y ajoutant un peu de couleurs vives.

MARKO 93
From 13th to 22nd June 2016
in Kandy, Matara & Colombo

Marko93 grew up in Saint-Denis, a suburb North of Paris. It was here where he laid down his first
artistic experimentation. By the late 80s, influenced by the American Street Art and to inject colors into
the greyness of everyday life, he embraced graffiti design and selected as surfaces of expression walls
in the city, abandoned lands or train wagons. In the early 2000, he enriched his technique in exploring
the potential of digital technologies and popularized the light painting in France in line with light work
undertaken by Man Ray and Picasso. His trademark? After a trip to the Middle East, he is now
including Arabic calligraphy in his frescoes. Today, as a recognized artist of the urban art scene, the
French Ministry of Culture recently ordered him to cover the mural glass facades of its headquarters in
Paris. Another emblematic work done by Marko 93: a Boeing entirely painted in Tunis.
Marko93 a grandi à Saint Denis dans la banlieue nord de Paris et c’est dans le quartier de son enfance
qu’il fait ses premières expérimentations artistiques. Dès la fin des années 80, influencé par le Street
Art américain et pour injecter de la couleur dans un quotidien de grisaille, il se spécialise dans le graffiti
et choisi comme surfaces d’expression des murs dans la ville, des terrains abandonnés ou des wagons
de train. Au début des années 2000, il enrichit sa technique en explorant le potentiel des technologies
numériques et popularise le light painting en France dans la lignée des travaux sur la lumière entrepris
par Man Ray et Picasso. Son signe particulier ? Il intègre à la suite d’un voyage au Moyen-Orient de la
calligraphie arabe à ses fresques. Aujourd’hui, artiste reconnu de la scène artistique urbaine,
le Ministère français de la Culture lui a récemment commandé une fresque pour couvrir les façades de
verre de son siège administratif à Paris. Autre œuvre emblématique : un Boeing entièrement peint à
Tunis.

At the beginning of the 2000's, David Foenkinos is a guitar teacher while studying literature at the
Sorbonne University in Paris. His first novel, Inversion of Idiocy (2002), earned him a critical success and
won the François Mauriac Prize that rewards a young writer. A turning point in his career is achieved
with The Delicacy (2009) celebrated by critics and which received a dozen literary prizes and sold over
a million copies. David Foenkinos adapted the novel to film and co-directed it with his brother Stephen
in 2011. It is nominated twice for the Césars Awards 2012 for best adaptation and best first film.
Memories (2011), his most autobiographical work, was also adapted to film in 2013 by actor and
director Jean-Paul Rouve. It turned out to be a mainstream success, exceeding the million entry tickets
sold in France. In 2014, Charlotte, a fictionalized biography of Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish painter on
the run against the Nazis who died at 26 year-old in an extermination camp, is acclaimed and again a
great success in bookstores. His most recent novel, The Mystery Henri Pick (2016), is the story of a
literary inquiry with a lot of suspense.
The tropism that characterized perhaps most the work of
Foenkinos, is the perpetual wavering between fiction,
realism, reality and real. His play on these categories bases
his understanding of the world. MEDIAPART

popular French novelists; his books are translated abroad
in forty languages.
The film Memories was selected for the opening of the
French Film Festival in Colombo on Tuesday, July 12; David
Foenkinos, President of the Festival, will present it and

workshop is to provide a brief
history on neoclassical ballet
and to introduce participants
to simple techniques used in
this sublime dance genre,
which evolved from classical
ballet in the 20th century.
Neoclassical ballet is closely
associated with the New York
City Ballet (NYCB), founded
by George Balanchine in
1948
&
that
inspired
world-class choreographers
as Jerome Robbins, Frederick
Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan
& Roland Petit. Neoclassical
ballet is sleekly modern and
profoundly minimalist. Although it rebels against the established traditions of the full-length story
ballet and eschews, the overly dramatized style of the Romantic Period, it is firmly grounded in
classical ballet technique. Ballet training is therefore a prerequisite for those wishing to master the art
of neoclassical ballet. The workshop will focus on the technical as well as the artistic aspects of
neoclassical ballet. Participants must have prior ballet training and wear soft ballet shoes.
L'objectif principal de l'atelier est de fournir une brève histoire du ballet néoclassique et d’initier les
participants aux techniques simples utilisées dans cet admirable genre de danse qui tire son origine du
ballet classique du 20e siècle. Le ballet néoclassique est étroitement associé au New York City Ballet
(NYCB), fondée par George Balanchine en 1948 et qui inspira de nombreux chorégraphes de
renommée mondiale tels Jérôme Robbins, Frédéric Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan et Roland Petit. Le
ballet néoclassique est d’une élégante modernité et profondément minimaliste. Bien qu'il s’oppose
aux traditions établies par un ballet narratif et contourne le style dramatisé de la période romantique,
il est fermement ancré dans les techniques du ballet classique. Avoir été formé au ballet est donc une
condition préalable pour ceux qui souhaitent maîtriser l'art du ballet néoclassique. L'atelier mettra
l'accent sur les techniques, ainsi que sur les aspects artistiques de ballet néoclassique. Les participants
devront avoir effectué au préalable une formation au ballet et porter des chaussons de danse.

Seneka Abeyratne is a freelance dance teacher and choreographer with a
strong background in both classical ballet and western contemporary dance.
He studied at the Khulsum School of Dance for 8 years and at the Deanna

dance workshops (Deanna School of Dancing, Sri Lanka Foundation Institute,
Fulbright Commission, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Nelung Arts
Center) and he is currently conducting ballet classes for children at the
Haywood Creative School, Gampaha.
Seneka Abeyratne, danseur, enseignant et chorégraphe indépendant, a une
solide expérience, à la fois dans le ballet classique et la danse contemporaine
occidentale. Il a étudié le ballet classique à l'Ecole de Danse Khulsum et à
celle de Deanna. Il a animé plusieurs ateliers de danse contemporaine à

An exhibition of fashion concepts revealing the luxury of the French lace in an innovative approach.
Lace is timeless, delicate, romantic, sensuous. The complexity of its patterns and the delicate
craftsmanship it requires are really fascinating. The LIFT Mod’Art designers will hence showcase their
talent with creations made with this special French lace produced here in Sri Lanka by Noyon. They will
also present various other samples and design portfolios such as couture collections, signature looks
of international design houses, converting men’s wear to women’s wear, footwear, accessory products
and lingerie collections. H.E. Mr Jean-Marin Schuh, Ambassador for France, among a distinguished
gathering, will open the exhibition, followed by a reception on Friday 17th June.

Initiated by the French Ministry of Culture in 1982, Music Day has become a landmark event. Every
year in June, amateur and professional musicians come together to perform for free in every corner
possible. In 2015, 120 countries and 700 cities all around the world have organized concerts that
gathered about 10 million music fans. This year, Alliance Française de Kotte has the pleasure of
organizing this event with the partnership of Barefoot, which will take place at the Garden Café
(Barefoot), Galle Road, Colombo 3.
Initiée par le ministère français de la Culture en 1982, la Fête de la musique est devenue un
rendez-vous incontournable du calendrier. Chaque année en juin, musiciens amateurs et
professionnels se réunissent un peu partout dans le monde pour se produire gratuitement; en 2015,
120 pays ont organisé des concerts réunissant plus de 10 millions de spectateurs. Cette année,

INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE TO BECOME
ACTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL - FRIENDLY CITIZENS OF THE WORLD !

Initially created to pave the road to Paris Conference on Climate Change (COP 21) hold in December 2015,
Vickie Frémont’s Environmental Citizen Workshops aim at engaging people into the worldwide movement
to halt climate change. By involving citizens in an artistic and creative process, each workshop explains the
relationship between climate change and our daily disposal of trash and shows how to recycle products in a
creative way to reduce the excess of domestic waste. At the end of the session (2x2 hours of workshops),
each participant creates an eco-responsible artwork (jewelry, puppets, etc.), transforming and recycling
rejected materials of daily use.
Initialement conçus pour accompagner la Conférence de Paris sur le Climat en décembre 2015, les Ateliers
Citoyens de Vickie Frémont ont pour objectif de contribuer à la compréhension des enjeux du
développement durable en plaçant des publics d’étudiants et d’adultes dans une démarche créatrice et
utile. Les participants aux ateliers entreprendront une démarche écoresponsable en créant des objets
(marionnettes, bijoux, mobiles, etc.) à partir d’objets et de matériaux du quotidien recyclés.

Born in Cameroon, Vickie Fremont has been inspired by the African arts and crafts. She recycles all sorts of
objects to create art from natural and artificial waste material. For the last 15 years she has dedicated her
work to young and adult publics and exhibited in museums, in cultural centers, schools or with
non-governmental organizations and associations. An ethnologist and artist, she finds her inspiration in
cultures around the world to promote sustainable development through artistic creation.

Fremont utilise les techniques de recyclage à partir de
matériaux usés, à la fois naturels et artificiels, pour créer
des objets d'art. Depuis 15 ans, elle consacre son travail

In celebration of his three decade long ‘affaire d’amour’ (this year) with ‘Bonsoir’,
well-known media personality Kumar de Silva presents the Audio Book of ‘The
Bonsoir Diaries’.
Presented by the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka, the ‘Bonsoir’ French Television Programme
enthralled local television audiences since July 1985. It ran for twenty-five years and finally closed
down in December 2010, leaving an indelible memory with the thousands who grew up with it.
Three years after Bonsoir’s demise came "The Bonsoir Diaries" by Kumar de Silva, one of its pioneers,
who, together with his colleagues Yasmin Rajapakse, Chintananda Abeysekera and several others,
created magic on the little screen during those early days of television. Un-edited and un-plugged,
‘The Bonsoir Diaries’, (a Samaranayake Publication), is a cocktail of chapters, bursting at the seams
with anecdotes, pithy asides, a string of faux-pas, tit-bits from behind-the-scenes, drizzled with
nostalgia, and, reveals everything you never saw on your favourite television show … from the 80s ...
through the 90s ... into 2000.
Three years down the line, with the hard copies almost totally sold out, comes ‘The Bonsoir Diaries’ as
an Audio Book, which takes the experience to the next level. Produced by Lisn, Sri Lanka’s first
audio-book company, ‘The Bonsoir Diaries - an Audio Book’ is read by its author and will be available
on all android and iOS devices. This is possibly among the very first English books by a Sri Lankan
author to be launched as an Audio Book.

livre audio !
Le programme français de télévision « Bonsoir », présenté par
l'Ambassade de France à Sri Lanka a captivé les téléspectateurs dès
juillet 1985. Il a perduré pendant vingt-cinq ans pour finalement se
terminer en décembre 2010, laissant un souvenir indélébile à des
milliers de téléspectateurs qui avaient grandi avec.
Trois ans après est paru « Bonsoir Diaries » par Kumar de Silva, une
publication des éditions Samaranayake. D’un ton libre et inédit,
'Bonsoir Diaries' se compose d’un ensemble d’anecdotes, d’apartés, d’extraordinaires récits, parfois
tirés des coulisses de la vie, le tout arrosé de nostalgie. En bref, 'Bonsoir Diaries' révèle tout ce que
vous n’avez jamais vu dans votre émission de télévision préférée ... des années 80 jusqu’en 2000.
Trois ans plus tard, les éditions papier du livre étant épuisées, «Bonsoir Diaries» arrive à point nommé

Kumar de Silva who describes himself as “an incurable francophone cum
francophile” has had a long association with France for nearly three decades.

books on Dr. Lester James Peries and screen legend Irangani Serasinghe. In
2012, in recognition of his efforts in promoting France’s cultural heritage, the
French Government bestowed Kumar de Silva with the title of “Chevalier in
the Order of Arts and Letters”.

Chers Membres, Chers Étudiants, Chers Amis,
Me voilà arrivé presqu’au terme de ma mission et je voudrais saisir
l’occasion de ce dernier journal pour vous adresser à tous de profonds
remerciements.
Quatre années seront finalement et comme souvent très vite passées pour
moi. C’est dire que nous avons beaucoup travaillé pour essayer
d’améliorer notre Alliance française, la rendre plus pertinente, plus
attractive, plus proche de vos besoins.
Il reste cependant encore beaucoup à faire et je compte sur le dévouement
et l’enthousiasme du conseil d’administration, du personnel, comme de
nos chers enseignants, pour continuer à servir au mieux notre projet et
faire partager notre amour de la langue française et les valeurs qu’elle
véhicule telles l’échange, la tolérance, la liberté, la culture.
Je quitterai Sri Lanka en août avec de très beaux souvenirs à commencer
par le sourire et la tempérance de ses habitants.

La Fontaine
à l’Alliance française de Jaffna
Last March, the Alliance Française of Jaffna
celebrated spring in French with animals from the
Fables of La Fontaine. The Hare and the Tortoise,
The Crow and the Fox, The Animals sick of the
plague were among the fables staged by Claude Le
Roux. Indeed, for the fourth consecutive year,
Claude was kind enough to host for a week at the
Alliance of Jaffna several theater workshops. Some
hundred and fifty students were concerned: one
hundred students of the Alliance divided into
several groups; thirty students from the French
section of the Jaffna University get together for La
Fontaine and twenty students of the Theater
Department of the University of Jaffna working on
themes of Marguerite Duras. The highlight was of
course the closing party with a representation of
selected Fables of La Fontaine as they have been
translated into Tamil by Mr Sukirthan, professor at
the Alliance française de Jaffna.
En mars dernier, l’Alliance française de Jaffna a fêté
le printemps en français avec les animaux des fables
de La Fontaine. Le Lièvre et la Tortue, Le Corbeau
et les Animaux malades de la peste comptaient
parmi les fables mises en scène par Claude Le Roux.
En effet, et pour la quatrième année consécutive,
Claude a eu la gentillesse d’animer pendant une
semaine à l’Alliance de Jaffna plusieurs ateliers de
théâtre. Claude a ainsi touché quelque cent
cinquante étudiants: une centaine d’élèves de
l’Alliance répartis en plusieurs groupes; une
trentaine d’étudiants de la section français de
l’université de Jaffna réunis autour de La Fontaine
et une vingtaine d’étudiants de la section théâtre
de l’université de Jaffna sur des thèmes de
Marguerite Duras. Le point culminant a bien sûr été
la fête de clôture avec une représentation de
quelques fables de La Fontaine telles qu’elles ont
été traduites en tamoul par M. Sukirthan,professeur
à l’Alliance française de Jaffna.

for a month after a launch in an
evening full of Art, music and even
wine! It was followed by several
successful art workshops with
cultural

pedagogical
objectives for schoolchildren.
Au mois de janvier, l’Alliance française de Kandy a organisé une belle exposition sur l’Impressionnisme.
Les reproductions de chef d’œuvres de Monet, Manet, Renoir, Van Gogh et les précurseurs du
mouvement artistique ont été exposées pendant un mois, inaugurée lors d’une soirée riche en art,
musique et même vin ! Elle a été suivie par des ateliers d’art avec objectifs culturels et pédagogiques
pour les élèves.

Discover Kandy in a bicycle, a cycling tour as well as a Café polyglot
to practice European languages were events organised in February.
En février, un tour à vélo pour découvrir Kandy et un Café polyglotte
pour pratiquer les langues européennes ont été organisés.
Bonjour Cinéma, the Francophone film festival was successfully held
in March in Kandy. The crowd was overwhelmed by the various
themes discussed in those internationally renowned films.
Bonjour Cinéma, festival du film francophone, a eu lieu au mois de mars à Kandy. Le public a été
enchanté par la variété de ces films internationalement renommés.
Sinhala & Tamil New Year festival, organized by the active student committee of AF, was celebrated in
April. There were numerous traditional games and fun activities for students and teachers.
Un festival pour le Nouvel-An Cinghalais et Tamoul,
organisé par le dynamique comité des étudiants,
s’est tenu en avril. De nombreux jeux traditionnels
et des activités ludiques pour les étudiants et les
professeurs ont fait le programme de cette journée.
In May, we said Goodbye in a farewell party to our
Director, Mr Cyril Villaverde, and his wife Jessica, a
teacher of Alliance Française de Kandy who
completed their mission in Sri Lanka. We wish them
all the best!

20th Anniversary
(1997-2017)
The International Francophone Day is being celebrated on 20th March, date
of the signing of the 1970 Niamey Convention which resulted in the
grouping together of French-speaking states. The Francophone festival was
celebrated at the Alliance Française de Matara (AFM) on 11th March 2016.
On the photo, students of the children’s class are coloring flags of different
French speaking countries.
La Journée internationale de la Francophonie est célébrée le 20 mars date de la signature de la
Convention de Niamey en 1970 regroupant des états francophones. La Francophonie a été célébrée
à l'AFM, le 11 mars 2016. Sur la photo, les élèves de la classe d’enfants, colorient les drapeaux de la
Francophonie.

Anniversary of the Alliance Française de Matara and the 10th of the Alliance
Française de Galle (AFG).
Lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle, l'institution a célébré le 20e
anniversaire de l'AFM et le 10e de l'AFG
Thanks to the DELF DALF examinations, qualified students are able to enter
Francophone universities. Prof. Abeysinghe, Department of Botany,
University of Ruhuna is awarding a certificate.
Avec les examens du DELF et du DALF, les étudiants lauréats sont en
mesure d'entrer dans des universités francophones. Le professeur
Abeysinghe du Département de Botanique de l’Université de Ruhuna
décerne un certificat.
Thanks to the principal, Mrs Chandralatha, 102 students of Sujatha Primary
started French with teachers of AFM. The next step is to start the grade 6
students’ French program in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in
June 2016. Apart from that, 40 scholarships are awarded to selected
students.
Grâce à l’entremise de la principale, Mme Chandralatha, 102 élèves de
l’école primaire Sujatha ont commencé l’apprentissage du français avec des enseignants de l'AFM. La
prochaine étape sera le démarrage d’un programme de français en collaboration avec le ministère de
l'Éducation sri-lankais pour les élèves du niveau 6 en juin 2016. Par ailleurs, 40 bourses seront
attribuées à des étudiants méritants.

10th Anniversary
(2007-2017)
Prof. Eric Meyer specialist in Sri Lankan studies, former Head, South-Asian
Department, University of Paris (INALCO), author of number of books on Sri
Lankan studies, visited AF Matara and Annex of Galle in February 2016. Mrs
Dilushi Peramunage is here receiving books from him donated for the library.
Le professeur Eric Meyer, spécialiste en études
sri-lankaises, ancien chef du Département d'Asie du
Sud à l’Université de Paris (INALCO) et auteur de
nombreux ouvrages sur l’histoire de Sri Lanka, a visité l’AFM et l'AFG en
février 2016. Mme Dilushi Peramunage reçoit ici des livres qu’il offre à la
bibliothèque.
Galle is the most important city of the Southern Province as a tourist destination and French language
is required for tourism in the region. Mrs Syoothy started her teaching career as teacher of Islam,
Mathematics and English. She retired after 38 years of service including 20 years of French language
teaching at Sacred Heart Convent and Alliance Française. She was an active member of AFM and APF.
Did you know that she had begun to learn French at the age of 41?
Galle est la ville du Sud la plus prisée en tant que destination touristique et la langue française est
nécessaire pour mener une activité touristique. Mme Syoothy a commencé sa carrière dans
l'enseignement en tant que professeur d'Islam, mathématiques et anglais. Elle a pris sa retraite après
ses 38 années de service dont 20 ans dédié à la langue française au Couvent du Sacré-Cœur et à
l’Alliance française. Elle fut une membre active de l'AFM et l'APF. Saviez-vous qu'elle avait commencé
à apprendre le français seulement à l'âge de 41 ans ?
L’AFG promotes French activities in schools. For instance, volunteer trainees are
working at Richmond College for about 200 students. The teachers and
students are here at the AFG for a certificate awarding ceremony from different
schools.
L’AFG promeut des activités autour du français dans des écoles. Ainsi des
enseignants stagiaires bénévoles interviennent à Richmond College pour
environ 200 étudiants. Enseignants et élèves sont ici réunis à l'annexe de Galle pour une cérémonie
d'attribution de certificats.
Among many activities, O/L and A/L seminars are the most popular events
among the teachers and the students with important presentations: grammar,
literature, essay writing and an introduction to French distance learning.
Parmi les nombreuses activités, les séminaires de O/L et A/L sont les
événements les plus populaires parmi les enseignants et les élèves. Le séminaire
A/L prévu en 2016 fera la part belle à de la grammaire, de la littérature, de
l’écriture et une introduction à l’apprentissage du français en ligne.

What’s up in Malé
for the French Spring Festival?
The Alliance Française de Male (AFMa) will welcome the internationally renowned French
Cameroonian artist Vickie Fremont. During ten days, starting on 13th July, she will lead eco-citizen
workshops for all audiences. Workshops will be held in public schools and international schools, in
social centres for youth and in AFMa. These workshops are a reflection on our environment and its
preservation. Through the creation of visual arts works made with recycled materials, the artist is
denouncing the extraordinary waste in our society and its undeniable impact on global warming.
Documentary screenings, lectures and an exhibition of the artist's works in the art gallery of the AFMa
will complete this project.
L’Alliance Française de Male (AFMa) se prépare à recevoir l’artiste franco
camerounaise Vickie Frémont de renommée internationale. Durant une
dizaine de jours, à partir du 13 juillet, elle développera des ateliers
éco-citoyens pour tous publics. Les ateliers se tiendront dans des écoles et
des collèges internationaux, dans des centres sociaux pour les jeunes et à
l’AFMa. Ces ateliers entraînent une réflexion sur notre environnement et sa
préservation. À travers la création d’œuvres plastiques réalisées à partir de
matériaux recyclés, l’artiste dénonce notre extraordinaire production de
déchets et son impact indéniable sur le réchauffement climatique. Des
projections de documentaires, des conférences et une exposition des œuvres
de l’artiste dans la galerie d’art de l’AFMa viendront compléter ce projet.
French and Belgian cuisine tastings workshops
AFMa will organize in public and international schools of Male with
French students several ‘France and Belgium’ cooking workshops.
At the end of the workshops, the participants are invited with their
family and friends to taste their production.
Ateliers/dégustations de cuisines française et belge
L’AFMa proposera des ateliers de cuisine franco-belge dans les
écoles et les collèges internationaux de Malé. Les participants,
apprenants de français, pourront déguster avec leur famille et leurs
amis les plats qu’ils auront préparés au cours de ces ateliers.
And don’t forget our Cheese Party, every month! Cheese lovers
have the opportunity to taste a large variety of French cheeses at
Symphony Solo restaurant in Male!
