The FIVB World Cups 2003 for men
and women, the most crucial and most
exciting competitions in the pre-Olympic
year, are being held in Japan this
autumn. This year's tournaments are the
10th for men and the 9th for women.
Twelve outstanding teams of both men
and women representing 218 FIVB
affiliated nations and regions will
compete with each other for three
tickets to Athens 2004. The women's
tournament is being played from
November 1st to 15th and the men's
tournament from November 16th to
30th. Participating teams will compete
fiercely - moving from city to city - from
the North to the South of Japan (women:
7 cities, men: 6 cities). These World Cups
will surely create a sensation across
Japan and make everyone excited again.

Since 1981, when Japan last won a
silver medal last at the 3rd
Women's World Cup, Japan has not
fared very well. This year, under
the new head coach, Shoichi
Yanagimoto, Japan's players hope
to be standing on the podium at the
end of this competition, with the
assistance of young stars, Megumi
Kurihara and Kana Oyama.
Egypt's last participation in the
World Cup was in 1995 and it
will be their second time this
year. Egypt beat Tunisia 3-2 in
the semifinals and defeated
their arch rival, Kenya, 3-1 in
the final at the African Nations
Championship.
Having rebuilt their silver medal
winning team under head coach,
Lang Ping, in the 1996 Olympics
in Atlanta, China's young and
promising squad, have their sights
on the Beijing Olympics in 2008,
and are doing themselves justice.
With the middle blocker, Zhao
Ruirui, China will be the favourite
at the Women's World Cup.
Keeping with their tradition of
playing with a strong defense,
Korea have many tall players.
The rebuilt squad with some
promising players will be led by
an experienced coach, Kim
Cheol-Yong, who coached the
Korean squad in Atlanta and
Sydney.

ルのチームを一気に刷新し、
北京五輪を
視野に入れた若いチームが早くも実力
発揮。196cmの長身センター趙るいるい
を軸に優勝候補の筆頭に躍り上がった。

粘り強いレシーブから切り返す伝統の
スタイルを崩さず、常に堅実なバレーを
展開する韓国も徐々に大型化。アトラン

Poland, which in the 1960s won
bronze medals in the two
consecutive Olympics, have
made a sensational comeback
after a long period of
underachieving. The Polish squad
with tall players and raw talent
promise to show us powerful
volleyball.
With the momentum of beating
Russia 3 - 0 in the preliminary round
at the European Championship,
Turkey went on to reach the final.
Despite defeat by Poland in the final,
Turkey became the European
Continental vice-Champions and
qualified for the World Cup 2003.
Watch out for a promising 19-yearold Ace spiker, Neslihan Demir!
This year is the fifth year for the Japanese
coach, Toshiaki Yoshida, to be involved in
the coaching of the USA squad. With the
core libero player, Stacy Sykora, their
strong defense makes the USA
defensively powerful and with an
offensive lineup of Danielle Scott, an
experienced player, and the promising
Logan Tom, the USA will aim at winning
their first ever medal at the World Cup.
Cuba has been the title holders at the
World Cup for 4 successive times since
1989; however, Cuba has recently been
struggling to replace Regla Torres and
Taimaris Aguero who quit the squad
after the Sydney Olympics and they lost
to the Dominican Republic twice this
year. Cuba finally got their revenge at
the NECECA Championship and won
a ticket for the World Cup.

Brazil was 7th in the 2002 World
Championship and 7th at the 2003
World Grand Prix; however, their
new coach, Jose Guimaraes, has
revived Brazil. Recalling Fernanda
Venturini, Erika Coimbra and Leila
Barros, who had been playing
beach volleyball, this strong Brazil
team is aiming for a medal at the
World Cup.
In exactly the same way as four years
ago, having beaten one of the two
leading South American countries,
Brazil and Peru, Argentina qualified
for the World Cup 2003. With the
help their key player, Carolina
Costagrande, who has been playing
in the Italian league, Argentina beat
Peru by the narrow margin of 3-2 at
the South American Championship.
Italy won the World Championship
last year and became the first ever
World No.1; however, at the
European Championship this year
Italy finished 6th. Receiving the
FIVB's wild card, Italy will
participate in the World Cup for
the second consecutive time.
The Dominican Republic beat Cuba
this year at the Pan American Cup
in June and at the Pan American
Games in August. Despite this
success, they were beaten by Cuba
2-3
at
the
NORCECA
Championship. However, the FIVB
set a high valuation on their
remarkable improvement and gave
them a wild card.

推薦のワイルドカードの適用を受けての
2大会連続2回目のワールドカップ出場。
今シーズンは6月のパンアメリカンカップ
でも8月のパンアメリカンゲームスでもキュ
ーバを破っていた。北中米選手権では
キューバに2−3と敗れたが、成長度を
かわれて推薦出場となった。

At the first World Cup in Japan in
1977, Japan won a silver medal
and since then a 4th place in 1991
has been their best result. Japan
was humiliated by ending up 6th at
the Asian Championship. Using
this humiliation as a spur and
exploiting their advantage as host
country, Japan will try to move up
to the top.
Tunisia, which has been leading
African volleyball along with
Egypt and Algeria, beat Algeria
in the semi finals and Egypt in
the final at the African Nations
Championship.

participated in the last three
World Cups and will compete in
the World Cup 2003 for the sixth
time.
Korea, which used to have no
serious rivals in Asia, put up a poor
fight at the Asian Championship Korea lost to India in the
preliminary round. Even in the
final, Korea captured a narrow
victory,
3-2,
over
China.
Representing Asia, Korea will
compete against the top teams in
the World.
Despite having no physical
disadvantages in Asia, the Chinese
Men's squad, compared to their
female counterparts, have been
outclassed by Korea. In the final at
the Asian Championship this year
China put up a good fight against
Korea, but had no chance to win
again.
日本開催となった77年の第3回大会での
銀メダル以来、91年の第7回大会での4
位が最高の日本。アジア選手権6位の屈
辱をバネに、
開催国の地の利を生かして、
上位進出をもくろむ。

アルジェリアとアフリカのバレー
界を引っ張ってきたチュニジアが、今回
のアフリカ選手権では、準決勝でアルジ
ェリア、決勝でエジプトを破って、4大会
連続の出場となった。
常に圧倒的強さで勝ち進んできた韓国
が今回のアジア選手権では、
予選でイン
ドに敗れるなど苦戦。決勝でも、
中国に3
−2という辛勝での優勝だった。アジアを
代表して世界に挑む。

トップに君臨する女子と比
べるとアジアでもライバル韓国の後塵を
拝する存在。今回のアジア選手権でも

Under their new head coach, Gian
Poolo Montali, a Italy has bounced
back after a few years in the wilderness.
At the European Championship,
Andrea Sartoretti who was allocated the
position of Super Ace played
exceptionally well and led Italy to the
European Championship. The Italian
squad is now full of ambition to
recapture the World No. 1 title.
Under their head coach, Philippe
Blain, who experienced Italian
Volleyball in Serie A, France
became the runners-up for the 3rd
time (1948 and 1987) at the
European Championship. Their
participation in the World Cup
will their ninth since the 1st
World Cup in 1965.
Under their head coach, Doug
Beal, with their key setter, Lloy
Ball, who has been playing in Italy,
and with Kevin Barnett and Erik
Sullivan, the USA squad has
almost reached maturity. Having
failed to win a medal in the last
three World Cups, they will be
trying very hard this time

The NORCECA Continent had been
dominated by the USA and Cuba for
a long time; however, Canada has
broken their stranglehold and beat
Cuba 3-2, and they will participate in
the World Cup for 4 times. Canada's
young players, such as Murray
Grapentine, displayed fantastic
volleyball under their head coach,
Stelio Deroco.

ことし就任のモンタリ監督の下、
強いイタ
リアが蘇った。モンタリがスーパーエース
に指名したサルトレッティが大活躍。99
年以来のヨーロッパ選手権優勝を成し
遂げ世界王座奪回に燃えている。

出場を決めた。デロコ監督が鍛え上げた

Since the appointment of Resende
in 2001, who led the Brazilian
women's squad to the world top
class, the Brazilian men's squad
has been invincible. Brazil with an
Ace Giba (Filho Godoy) won the
2002 World Championship,
defeating their strong rivals, Italy
and Russia. Brazil will be the
favourite in the World Cup.
Venezuela has recently been
making great progress and beat
Brazil at the Pan American
Games. With the best scorer,
Harry Gomes, Venezuela won the
South American Championship by
beating Argentina, one of the two
South American leading squads,
and qualified for the World Cup
for the first time.
Serbia and Montenegro, part of the
former Yugoslavia, reached their pinnacle in the Olympics in Sydney and
joined the world's top group in volleyball. Although they disappointingly ended up 4th at the European
Championship, with mentally and
physically tough players who are
playing in Italy, they will still be one
of the favourites in the World Cup.
Playing in the European style, Egypt
with tall and powerful players have
been one of the leading countries in
Africa. Egypt beat Tunisia in the
preliminary round at the African
Nations Championship; however,
they played each other again in the
final and result was vice versa. Egypt
will participate in the World Cup by
receiving a wild card.

Heading for the World Cup, the Japanese host squads are making final preparations
制作発表も行われ、準備は万端
A few members of the Japanese men's and women's national squads were
invited to a publishing event of the approaching World Cup 2003 which
took place at a Tokyo hotel on 7th October. As they were introduced, the
players in their team uniforms went on the stage one by one into the
spotlight. Despite being busiest time with the final preparations for the
World Cup, seven members of each squad turned up for the event. The
men's skipper, Yoichi Kato, who is currently playing in the Greek league,
was linked up to the event by video. He stated vigorously that Japan will
have to achieve a high level of success to get a ticket for Athens and
promised that they would work hard to achieve it.
Besides these, the cheering groups were also introduced, such as the SOLE, a special dancing team, the NEWS which is a boys' singing and
dancing group and a group of three actors - the "Three Amigos".
Furthermore, the TV broadcasting team including a special reporter, Misaki
Ito, and analysts were also announced. Motoko Obayashi, Kumi Nakada,
Nobuchika Kuzuwa, Naomi Masuko, Shunichi Kawai, Yukimitsu Fujita
and Yuichi Nakagaichi will analyse Japan's matches.
Fuji TV and its local stations will broadcast all 132 matches on CS satellite
channels and there will be plenty of programmes about the World Cups by
terrestrial broadcasting as well. Moreover, the nine matches which will be played
in Tokyo will be televised on the high vision. The preparation for broadcasting
has been perfect and we are just looking forward to exciting matches.

間近に迫ったワールドカップ2003の制作発表が、
全日本男女チームの代表選手を集めて行われた。紹介された選手たちは、
スポットライトを浴びながらユニフォーム姿で一人ずつステージに登場。全日本
男女は現在合宿中のため、会場には代表として女子7名、男子7名が出席。
ギリシャリーグ参戦のため日本を離れている全日本男子キャプテンの加藤選手
はビデオで参加し、
「オリンピック出場のためには3位以内という厳しい条件を
クリアしないといけません。それを目指してがんばります」
と力強く語った。
この日は、

ワールドカップを盛り上げるスーパーチアダンサーズ「SO-LE」、
イメージ
キャラクター「NEWS」、
スペシャルリポーターの伊藤美咲さん、
スペシャル応援
団「スリーアミーゴス」や、
キャスター陣の発表もあわせて行われた。日本戦の
解説には大林素子さん、中田久美さん、葛和伸元さん、益子直美さん、川合
俊一さん、
藤田幸光さん、
中垣内祐一さんらがあたる。
フジテレビ系列ではさらにCS放送で132試合全試合を完全中継。地上波でも
各番組内でのバレーコーナーの放送や特別番組を企画。
また東京での日本戦
9試合はハイビジョン中継を行うなど、
万全の放送態勢。あとは熱戦を待つのみ
となった。
