We have reached the final phase of construction that will begin in September and will end next Spring 2008. As one of the largest Japanese cultural centres outside of Japan we have much to celebrate and at the end of this phase. We will also be a major performance and cultural institution for all Canadians. The celebration begins at 11:00am in the Kobayashi Hall with the eye painting of the Daruma doll and is followed by a very special piano and cello jazz performance by David Braid and Matt Brubeck arranged by Yamaha Music. In just over ten years, the JCCC has attracted over $12 million of support from corporations, individuals and foundations. A vibrant centre, it has more than 4,500 members and offers a continuous stream of traditional and contemporary Japanese and Japanese Canadian cultural programming including live performances, film screenings, heritage events, business conferences and seminars, festivals and specific programming for Canadian school children. In fact, over 15,000 school children visit. To reserve a place at this special celebration, make sure to contact Michael Kim at 416-441-2345 ext 232 or to Yukiko Hipsh at [email protected] before September 10, 2007. TORONTO’S NIKKEI HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATES ‘A WONDERFUL LIFE’ This year’s celebration of the local Nikkei Heritage Day will take place at the JCCC on Sunday, September 23, 2007.The theme will be “It’s a Wonderful Life,” reflecting the successful new life that Canada’s Nikkei have made for themselves after the Second World War. Nikkei Heritage Day committee chair Betty Moritsugu says, “The planning committee has put together this year’s event as a most happy occasion. In the program will be a revival of the ‘Wonderful Canada’ song and odori performed by dancers from several community groups. The other performers will include new faces as well as those who have starred in previous Heritage Day celebrations. Yusuke Tanaka will offer another of his imaginative plays based on aspects of our heritage too.” “This new musical play is titled West Coast Story: Romewo toh Juliet, and the similarity to the monster hit musical West Side Story is intentional.” Nikkei Heritage Day 2007 begins at 12:00pm and runs until 5:00pm. Admission is free. Bento boxes, drinks and baked goods will be on sale. And as is the custom, hot dogs and drinks will be free to children 12 and under. Chair Betty Moritsugu adds, “So please come and join us in celebrating your Nikkei heritage. There will something for everyone—good food, great entertainment, and a chance to see and learn about who we are and how far we have come.” 45th Annual Issei Day 一世の日 Sunday September 30, 2007 2:00pm - 5:00pm ISSEI DAY The Board of Directors of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre extends an invitation to Issei Day on Sunday September 30, 2007 and would like to welcome all who are 70 years of age and older. The Tsugaru Shamisen is currently enjoying a boom in Japan, not only in traditional music but also in more popular and contemporary compositions. In celebration of this and to acknowledge the launch of the JCCC’s own shamisen program, we will be screening an acclaimed 2004 biographical anime film tracing the life of the founder of Tsugaru Shamisen. We will be joined by top shamisen educator and performer, Gerry McGoldrick who will introduce and demonstrate the instrument and deliver a performance of tradition shamisen pieces. Gerry, a long time resident and performer in Japan, is currently completing his PhD at York University on the shamisen. Following the performance we will screen the award-winning anime feature, Nitaboh directed by Nishizawa Akio. Nitaboh has won several international awards, including the Public Award for Best Animated Film at the 11th Lyon Asian Film Festival. The film focuses on the early years of musician Nitaro Akimoto (1857-1928) who, at a young age, is stricken with an illness that leaves him blind. He inherits the shamisen guitar once used by his mother and is taught its basics by a blind traveling shamisen player. In time, with the help of friends old and new, he walks the paths that leads to his ultimate fate - that of founder of the Tsugaru style of shamisen music. Adding to the entertainment and educational value of his feature debut, writer-director Akio Nishizawa weaves the cultural import of the shamisen fluently through the film, and places Nitaro’s story firmly in the framework of a Japan shifting uneasily from feudal rule to Westernization. According to Variety, “Nitaboh scores top marks in storytelling and is graced with the spine-tingling sounds of an instrument enjoying renewed popularity in Japan. The movie plays in the right key to register across the audience Gerry McGoldrick spectrum.” Date: Time: Admission: Thursday September 27, 2007 7:00pm $5 for JCCC members, $7 for non-members POSITION REQUIRED AT THE JCCC THE ROAD TO ASIA FESTIVAL 2007 OUR 7TH FANTASTIC YEAR!! A discussion with the student followed and the art teacher learned that the student’s body was almost entirely tattooed. This was the spark that resulted in six years of visual portrayal by Aba Bayefsky of tattooed people both in Japan and Canada. Aba Bayefsky had the good fortune to meet and work with the Japanese tattoo master, Mitsuaki Ohwada (Horikin) in Yokohama in late 1982. From the tattoo master he gained insights into contemporary Japanese tattooing. Paintings and watercolours from this tattoo period in the artist’s life will be on display from Saturday, October 20 to Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Beckett Gallery, 120 Scollard St., Toronto, 416-922-5582. KENJUTSU DEMONSTRATION by Douglas Tong At the Road to Asia Festival this Fall, the Tokumeikan group will again be putting on a demonstration of one of the great styles of kenjutsu (classical Japanese swordsmanship): Katori Shinto Ryu. Katori Shinto Ryu (“the sword style of the God of Katori”) was created during Japan’s Warring States Period (Sengoku Jidai) to prepare samurai for fighting on the battlefield. This style has produced many excellent swordsmen and famous sword masters such as Tsukuhara Bokuden (the founder of Kashima Shinto Ryu) and Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (the founder of Shinkage Ryu and the teacher of Yagyu Muneyoshi). Since olden times, this style has been passed down as a secret tradition from generation to generation, teacher to student, intact and relatively unchanged for more than 600 years. Only recently have outsiders been allowed to see it. The demonstration in Katori Shinto Ryu will showcase a selection of fundamental exercises and kata (sword vs. sword forms) from its curriculum. More information about Katori Shinto Ryu can be found at the group’s website: www.tokumeikan.com and http:// tokumeikan-toronto.blogspot.com/. NATSU MATSURI REVIEW The Natsu Matsuri and Obon Festival, held on July 14 at the JCCC, proved to be another fantastic success. While the weather did not cooperate with our plans, it did not deter the thousands of visitors who came to enjoy the lively festival atmosphere, the great food, and spectacular taiko and odori performances. The festival is always a special one because of the tremendous co-operative effort – it is a true community festival, organized by many community organizations. Everyone played an important role - Nikkei of all generations, the Buddhist Church, The New Japanese Canadian Association, JAVA … the list of supporters would include almost every group within the community. Thank you everyone! The festival marked the 5th year of an exciting community tradition and we look forward to an even bigger and better festival next summer! Affectionately known as "Auntie Susie" to four decades of odori dancers, Susie volunteered her skills as a hairdresser whenever and wherever the odoriko performed. From a simple bun to an elaborate Maiko hairstyle, her expertise always gave the performers confidence that their hairstyle completed the look that the dance required. Travelling as far away as San Juan, Puerto Rico, across Canada aspart of the Nikka Dancers (celebrating the Japanese Canadian Centennial in 1977), and all over Ontario, her dedication and volunteer spirit is an inspiration to everyone she helped. The JCCC has built its facility to serve the growing needs of the community as well as attract new families with an interest in Japanese culture, heritage and programming. Today the JCCC is one of the leading cultural facilities in Canada with a wide array of programs, festivals and events. The success of the JCCC since moving into 6 Garamond Court has set the framework for Phase III, which will provide an important resource for the many community groups which call the Centre home. Building upon Bruce Kuwabara and the KPMB’s designs from the previous phases, Phase III will complete what the JCCC was envisioned to be: a cultural facility that is welcoming, accessible and inclusive. Accessibility has always been important, not only in being able to access certain areas of the JCCC, but also being able to access other resources currently not possible at this given time. Additional parking spaces will be constructed near the main entrance to encourage more visitors, and a new elevator and staircase will be located inside the building to allow easier access to the second floor. Phase III will also enhance the JCCC’s focus on education by providing increased access and space to growing participants and other programs. The Nikkei Heritage Resource Centre will have its own climate-controlled area, which will provide all members and visitors with archived information and artifacts relating to Japanese Canadian culture and history. As well, on the second floor the construction of the Tea Ceremony Room will educate many visitors about the intricate details and symbolic meanings of the tea ceremony. Cooking workshops will receive a great boost with the construction of the new Culinary Arts facility located outside of Kobayashi Hall and will assist with local and outside catering for large events. As well, the JCCC will offer culinary education in its state-of- the-art culinary facility. Other items of construction that will benefit the JCCC include the construction of a functional irrigation system, additional storage spaces located in key areas, the renovation to the offices and boardroom, and a gallery corridor located on the second floor. To celebrate the beginning of the construction of Phase III, a groundbreaking ceremony Kansei e no Michi (Pathway to Completion) will take place on Saturday September 15, 2007 at 11:00am. It is this final stage that will start this ‘pathway to completion’ which began more than ten years ago when the building of 6 Garamond Court was purchased. We hope that all of you will be able to attend this celebration as we begin to complete this new facility for many generations to come. For further information about the JCCC Phase III, please contact James Heron, Executive Director at 416-441-2345 ext. 224. She has degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo, specializing in printmaking. She owns two etching-presses and works from her rural home in New Hamburg, Ontario. Gloria is one of the founding members of the 4th Annual Rural Routes Studio Tour (www.ruralroutes.org) which takes place in November. “In general, the depictions go from high density apartment living to isolation by choice, although the apt. buildings, too, exude a feeling of loneliness and isolation to me. Windows are an important element in my structures - often the focal point. They represent the mysterious and hidden, the numerous stories taking place within.” - G.K.
