Grammar Focus
《推測，可能性の could》
could は「…できた」という can の過去形で使われる以外に，「ひょっとしたら…かもしれない」と
いう意味があります。形は過去形であるにもかかわらず，現在あるいは未来の確信が弱い事柄を述べ
るときに使われます。過去形は「could + have + 動詞の過去分詞」で表され「…だったかもしれ
ない」という意味になります。否定形 couldn’t は「…のはずがない」という意味で，否定の過去形
「couldn’t + have + 動詞の過去分詞」は「…のはずはなかった」という意味になります。 could と
ほぼ同じ意味で使われるものに may と might があります。
○ That woman could be an actress.（あの女性はもしかすると女優かもしれない。）
○ She couldn’t be Anna Scott!（彼女がアナ・スコットであるはずがない！）
○ Couldn’t be better!（最高!）
○ You could have been right.（あなたが正しかったかもしれない。）
