Japanese FDI in France:
2011 results and perspectives for 2012

France remained attractive to foreign investors in 2011 with 698 new foreign invest
ments that will create or maintain 27 958 jobs. This is the 2nd best result recorded in
over a decade. On average, 13 investment decisions in France were announced every
week last year.
France is the 2nd largest recipient in Europe of internationally mobile physical invest
ment from all over the world (40 different countries in 2011). Europe remained the lead
ing source region, responsible for 60% of investment decisions, ahead of North America
(25%) and Asia (11%).
In 2011, Japan ranked 1st among Asian countries for investment projects in France, with
38 successful investment projects (29 in 2010). Today, about 450 Japanese companies
are doing business in France, employing nearly 65,000 people.
The seminar will present the 2011 results of Japanese FDI in France and recent trends,
illustrating changes in investment patterns over the past decade.

has been
director of the Japan office of Invest
in France Agency (IFA) since 2007. IFA
is the national agency responsible for
promoting and facilitating international
investment in France (www.investin
france.org). C. Grignon has previously
occupied several positions at the Trade
Section of the French Embassy/Consu
late in Osaka, Taipei and Tokyo. He
started his career as a credit analyst
in a Japanese bank’s Paris Branch. He
holds an MBA from EM Lyon Business
School, a Master’s Degree in Economics
from Paris X Nanterre University and a
Master’s Degree in Japanese from Pa
ris VII Jussieu University (http://www.

Isabelle GIRAUDOU

the expertise of Japan in the field of in
