カイロ郊外の観光名所は、いつもなら多くの外国人
観光客でにぎわうが、今は客足はほぼゼロ。お土産を
売る露店や、近くの商店街もがらんとしている。

Sightseeing spots in the Cairo suburbs, usually
crowded with foreign tourists, are seeing almost zero
foot traffic these days. Street stalls selling souvenirs
as well as shopping areas close by are deserted.

今回は優れた作品が多く寄せられ、成績優秀者の絞
り込みに手間取りました。うれしい悲鳴です。
「カイロ郊外の」は on / in the outskirts of Cairo [ち
びリス、松浦秀明]、in the suburbs of Cairo [織田智子、
佐藤拓一]、in the Cairo suburbs [三上修平、鈴木理絵]、
in a suburb of Cairo [横山智佳] です。作品中にはあり
ませんでしたが、Tony 先生は in the vicinity of Cairo
「カイロ近郊の」も挙げています。suburban Cairo が
目立ちましたが、
「郊外にあるカイロ」の意味にも取れ
るので注意しましょう。
「観光名所は」は sightseeing spots [岡本修芳 ]
や tourist attractions [Liverpool] のように複数形にし
た投稿者がほとんどでしたが、カイロ郊外の観光名所
は１カ所であると判断すれば単数形になります。
「いつもなら多くの外国人観光客でにぎわう」は「観
光名所」の説明なので、そのまま続ければ、usually
attract a great number of foreign sightseers, but … [池
浦リエ ]、 are usually crowded with many foreign
tourists. [寿栄松命美]、are usually alive with a lot of
foreign tourists. [ゆきさと]、are usually bustling with
foreign tourists, but … [大場健一]、were usually frequented by a lot of foreign tourists. [岸久子] になりま
す。関係代名詞を使って、…, which are usually crowded with many tourists from abroad. [ETTO] と同格扱
いにすることもできます。
「いつもなら」を in a normal
situation として、…, which would be bustling with
many foreign tourists in a normal situation, … [鈴木敬
之] と仮定法を使うのも一案です。
「いつもなら」を文
頭に置く場合は、Ordinarily, … [Chips]、Normally,
… [上島淳二]、Usually, … [藤井博] のようにカンマで
区切るとよいでしょう。
ここまでの秀作としては、Though sightseeing spots
in the suburbs of Cairo are usually thronged with a lot

生かせば、 … but now the number of visitors has
dropped / decreased to almost zero. [山之内悠子、朝直
庸子 ]、 … has now dropped almost to almost zero.
[Chow-yan]、…, but recently the number of sightseers
has dwindled to nearly almost zero. [三木学]、…, but
now they have almost zero visitors. [LEMMON] にな

If it were 1) an ordinary time, sightseeing spots 2) outside Cairo would have been1) crowded with many foreign tourists. At the present time, however, there are
almost no foreign tourists to visit3). Street stalls selling
souvenirs and a nearby shopping district2) looks 4) bare 5).

● 1) The writer has mixed a 2nd conditional ‘if ’ clause
with a 3rd conditional main clause here.（if 節の仮定
法過去形と主節の仮定法過去完了形が混在しています。
）
● 2) ‘ Spots’ is plural in sentence 1 but ‘a district’ is
singular in sentence 3. This implies that all the sightseeing spots in Cairo are clustered around the one nearby shopping district. Maybe so, but I doubt it. My bet is
that each sightseeing spot has its own nearby shopping
district / street.（spots が複数で、第３文の district が
単数だと、カイロの全ての観光名所はひとつの商店街
に接していることになります。その可能性もあります
が、観光名所にはそれぞれ近くに商店街があると思わ
れるので、両方とも複数形にします。）
