2013 POST PROGRAM REPORT
From Program Director Savarese:
Although the US-Japan Summer Cultural Experience 2013
has come to an end, I know that the friendships and
achievements that have formed will long surpass the two
week duration of the program. Visions of the excited yet
quiet students checking in on the first day, and the
cameras, hugs, laughter and tears of the last many days,
are prominent in my mind. After much preparation for my
second year as Program Director, I now can reflect on one
of the most fulfilling and influential experiences of my
long career as an educator.
I feel that every part of the program plays an essential role in reaching our
goals for the students. Through highly
structured events like the English and
Japanese language classes, elective classes,
Phantom of the Opera Broadway play, or udon
noodle making, the students were able to
acquire bilingual and bicultural skills and
experiences. However, it became clear that the
students interactions during sports activities,
a game of their choice, throughout their
meals, or during free dorm time were just as
important to their success in gaining all this unique program has to offer.

Amazing Experience!
I was most proud of the students on Family Day, when they were able to
screen their group’s video productions for each other, as well as for their
families and friends. Laughter and smiles
filled the room as we were all able to see the
media production skills they acquired and
the creativity and teamwork that went into
each group’s interpretation of their visits to
New York City. Their hard work
brainstorming, shooting footage, and editing
paid off immensely, as I know they will never
forget the pride they felt when seeing their
finished products.
Although I had been anticipating the program’s start for a long time, I
could not have imagined the strength of the bonds that would form
between the staff and students, or the depth of what would be
experienced and learned. I have mostly the positive outlooks and
enthusiasm of such a great group of students, interns, and staff to thank.

去る8月3日バイリンガル夏期講習2013 @慶
應義塾ニューヨーク学院（高等部）参加者54名
がそれぞれ帰路につきました。参加者は皆エネ
ルギッシュで、初日のオリエンテーションから
参加者同士でお互いの事を学ぶ姿勢が見られ
「学び」に対して情熱的なグループでした。
このサマープログラムでは、語学、選択科目の
授業や講演会のみならず、多くの「学ぶ」場が
設けられていました。寮での生活を通し共同生
活、自立心をもとにしたタイムマネージメント
など多くを学んだことと思います。カフェテリ
アでは日本食のみならず、アメリカン、メキシ
カン、イタリアンフードなどを食し、スポーツ
や他のアクティビティー、そしてDCTVのビデオ
プロダクションを通しコミュニケーション力、
創造力、表現力の向上をはかり、8月1日に行わ
れた作品発表会はこのプログラムのハイライト
でもありました。
もちろん、この様な「学び」の場を提供する
にあたりこのプログラムの屋台骨となる慶應義
塾ニューヨーク学院（高等部）の教職員のプロ
としての責任感、プログラムに対しての思い入
れも重要になります。この面でも今回もベスト
のチームを構成できたと自負しております。本
学院教職員のみならず、米国大学生インター
ン、カフェテリア、施設、警備スタッフ、DCTV
のインストラクター、講演者やその他外部のサ
ポートスタッフ、このサマープログラムに携わ
る全ての者がベストを尽くしてくれました。こ
の場でその方々へお礼を述べるとともに労をね
ぎらいたいと思います。
最後になりましたが、大切なお嬢様・ご子息を
2週間も私共にお預けくださった保護者の皆
様、ありがとうございました。プログラム終了
後2週間後に再会されたお嬢様・ご子息が少し
ではありますが成長し、逞しくなっていたので
はないかと存じます。来年度もより多くの中学
生を迎えたいと思っておりますので、ご親戚や
お友達のお子様もお誘いの上、また是非ご参加
ください。

On August 3, Keio Academy of New
York US-JAPAN Summer Cultural Experience
2013 came to a close. This year’s participants’
energy level and their will to learn were very
high. We were very encouraged by the fact that
from the “Day One” the participants showed
strong interest in learning about each other.
Not just through the language and elective
classes, this program aimed to make every
aspect of the two week program a learning
experience.
For many participants this was first time
to live away from home. Through the residential
life experiences the participants learned about
community living and time management. Trying
new food at cafeteria, participating in organized
sports activities brought the participants even
more closer together and served as a great tools
for improving ones communication skill.
Learning to communicate and express
one’s self through the creative process of video
production was for many participants, a
highlight of the program. Of course, providing
high quality learning opportunity throughout
the program required strong team of
professionally minded people. I have no doubt
in my mind that we were able to gather one of
the best teams for this task. From the interns,
faculty, administrative and residential staff,
nurse, facilities, security, cleaning, cafeteria staff
as well as DCTV staff, lecturers and other
outside support staff. I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate all the team
members for the job well done and thank them
for their passion and commitment.
Lastly, as with every year, I would like to
thank the parents of the participants for
trusting us with your children for the two weeks.
Please spread the word about our summer
program so that next year we may welcome even
biggest group of participants!

参加者及び保護者の皆様:
レジデンシャル・ディレクターの皆川です。
2週間のプログラム期間中、参加者・イン
ターン生、そして寮スーパーバイザーが寮で共
同生活を送りました。
多くの皆さんは初めて家族から離れて暮らし
たことで、たくさんのことを学んだのではない
でしょうか?
寮では多くの参加者の皆さんが初めての洗濯と
いうこともあり、スタッフは洗剤を用意し、ラ
ンドリー・乾燥機の使い方を紹介しました。
また、集団生活では欠かせないタイムマネー
ジメントの大切さを紹介しました。夜10:00の
ナイトチェック、10:30の消灯を守り、翌朝の
起床に備えました。
スタッフは毎朝参加者の一時間前に起床し、
朝食への送り出しをしました。
夜のドームアクティブティではスタッフが各
ワークショップを紹介し、ビーズメイキング･
アイスクリーム＆カップケーキデコレーショ
ン、スカベンジャーハント、映画上映会、T
シャツ染めを行い、アメリカならではの遊びを
提供しました。
異なる文化や言語をバックグラウンドに持つ
人々が、一つのコミュニティで共に暮らすこと
で知っておくべき大切さ、お互いを支えあうこ
とに大切さを学びご家族の下へ帰っていただけ
ることを願っております。

Side Story from the Dorm...
“At first the girls wanted to do laundry every single day, even if it was just
one shirt. They were also using multiple laundry detergent pellets. The
supervisors talked to the girls about how the machines aren't meant for
such small loads and that it wasn't good for the environment to use them
so frequently.
By the end of the program, the girls were working together to combine
their clothing into bigger loads and remembered to use just one pellet.”

Hello participants and family.
During the two weeks of our program,
participants, interns and dorm supervisors all
lived in the dorms together. It was the first time
for many of you to be away from your family. It
may have felt strange at first, but we all
adjusted, and I believe you must have learned a
lot of things. For example, we soon realized that
for many of you - it was your first time doing
your own laundry. So staff members gave you a
quick lesson in the art of using a washer and
dryer. The most important lesson being- first the
washer, then the dryer. And not too much
detergent!
Also, we introduced the importance of
time management. During the program, we did
the night check at 10:00 P.M. and lights at
10:30 to make sure everyone got enough rest for
the next busy day. In the morning, staff
members woke up an hour early so participants
could get to breakfast on time.
During dorm activities, supervisors
hosted several workshops, including the beads
lizard, of ice cream making and cupcake
decoration, a scavenger hunt, movie night, and
tie dyeing t-shirts.
We come from different backgrounds,
but we all lived together, shared the experience
of being here together. Through this program, I
hope you all learned a little more about yourself
and your interests, but just as importantly, how
to live well and live thoughtfully with others,
and how important it is to support each other
and all the people in our lives. I hope you will
take the spirit of friendship you established with
others home with you, and I hope you can keep
some of those friendships alive, even across
whole oceans and continents.

us to provide individual attention to each

created an original story based on the three

advanced, wrote the script for us. The

success, and they felt a sense of
accomplishment. It was a great experience
for everyone.
Thanks to the amazing students in my ESL
and poetry classes, I have a much greater
awareness of my own style as a
teacher. More importantly, I had the great
privilege of witnessing their blossoming
linguistic talent in flux across various
discursive contexts ranging from speeches
about confiscated iPhones to poems
narrating voyages across space and
time. To my students--please continue to
work hard in your studies of the English
language and do not forget to keep writing;
words fail me when it comes to how
talented you all are, so remember to believe
in yourselves. We were teachers together,

間となりました。また、4年間過ごした本学院の温か

高の笑顔を振りまいてくださるカフェ、清掃員、警
備の方々。我が子のように優しく、時には厳しく見
守ってくださる先生方やスーパーバイザーの方々。
本当に皆さん温かく接してくださり、感謝の気持ち
でいっぱいです。このプログラムは最高の思い出と

Thank you and all teachers and staff
at the Keio summer camp for the wonderful
two week program. My son enjoyed the
program tremendously, made many friends
and learned so much at the same time. He
spent a lot of time explaining what he did
with such an enthusiasm that we haven't
seen for a long time. Even without any
computer games for the whole two weeks
(which is an unbelievable thing for him), he
wanted so much to come back next year.
Seeing how sad he was when leaving
the camp, I would really appreciate if you
and other teachers would be so kindly to
share your "secret" how to engage the
teenagers to focus on the subjects that really
important in their lives. It is certainly a
challenge for many parents to guide our
children through this period.

昨年に引き続き参加させて頂きました中学3年生
の長女、昨年の姉の話を聞き「今年は僕も行きた
い」と言い出した中学１年生の長男共に2週間の貴
重な体験をさせて頂きました。たった2週間ではあ
りますが、2週間では到底出来ない多数の経験をさ
せて頂いております。英語のクラスはもちろんで
すが、ブロードウェイでの「オペラ座の怪人」の
鑑賞、DCTVのビデオメイキング。長女は昨年のフ
ジテレビ久下アナウンサーの幼少時の話や実体験
などの話に感銘を受け、それ以後の長女の生活が
ポジティブに変化致しました。毎年悪戦苦闘する
のが讃岐うどん作りだとも申しております。私た
ちはシンガポールからの参加になりますが、ブラ
ジル、アメリカ、日本など多方面から参加者がお
り、情報交流なども盛んに行われるようです。多
感な中学生時代にこのような経験が出来る事はそ
の後の彼ら、彼女たちに良い影響を与えると私は
信じております。昨年は長女1人で知り合いもいな
い状況での参加で当初は心配致しましたが、すぐ
にお友達が出来、毎日先生やインターン生から
送って頂く写真やメールでとても安心する事が出
来ました。今年初参加の長男も1日目、2日目の写
真ではどこか緊張気味でしたが徐々にお友達とも
交流も増え、リラックスしてプログラムに臨んで
いる姿が伝わって参りました。サマーキャンプが
終了した後、各々各国に帰国しますが、その後も
近況報告など行い、海外生活やインター生である
為にぶつかる語学の壁など悩みを話し合いお互い
励まし合っています。長女は今秋に慶應義塾
ニューヨーク学院(高等部)の本受験致しますので、
これからシンガポールにて受験勉強、長男はもう
すでに来年のサマーキャンプを心待ちにしていま
す。親の立場から致しましては、子供を単独で
ニューヨークに旅立たせるには不安もあります
が、「可愛い子には旅をさせろ」という諺があり
ますように、帰国時元気でゲートから出てくる子
供たちの笑顔には1回りも2回りも大きく成長し、
精神的に強くなって帰ってきた姿があります。2週
間、子供たちの安全を第一に考え影ながら見守
り、また多数の経験により今すべき事は何である
かを自問自答させる機会を与え、ご指導下さいま
した先生方やインターン生に心から感謝致してお
ります。有難うございました。今後共宜しくお願
い申し上げます。

私達はインターンを含め73名は広大な自然のあるこのニューヨーク学院の寮で生活してきました。
DCTVでは私たち三人はマンハッタンの北にあるハーレムという所に行って撮影しました。ハーレム
と聞いたときはどこかわからなかったけど、撮影を通して文化や街並みなどを知ることができまし
た。編集では先生に一から教えていただき、撮った映像を切ったりくっつけたり音をつけたりと
やったことないことばっかりで楽しかったです。最終日の二日前には他の班の映画を見て自分たち
が行かなかった所も知れて良かったです。発表会はうまくできたので、一生の思い出になると思い
ます。私達はこの2週間で友達の大切さ、アメリカ人の考え方の違いにふれることができて本当に
良かったと思います。
中等部からは私達をふくめ4人がニューヨーク学院に行きました。4人ともそこまで話したいことが
なかったのですが、同じ学校から4人もきていると思うと心強く思いました。でも他の子は違いま
す。自分と同じ学校から来た人はほとんどいなく初対面の人ばかりです。それでも、2週間だから
といって友達をつくらなくていいやと思えばつまらなくさびしい2週間になると思います。でも友
達をつくっても2週間だけの付き合いだからといって友達を大切にしなかったりして気付けるのは
すごくだめなことですしそんなことしたら全体の雰囲気が悪くなり楽しくなくなってしまいす。だ
から2週間だけの付き合いになってしまうとしても友達を大切にすべきだと思いました。
あと、アメリカ人の考え方の違いについて少し理解することができたと思います。ノリが良い所時
間に少しルーズな所などたくさんありますが、一番日本人と考え方が違うと思った所はあいまいな
ことが嫌いでしっかり自分の意見を言わないといけないことです。
今回このサマープログラムで自分の意見をはっきりと伝える大切さも知ることができました。はっ
きり言わないと相手も困るし自分も困ります。例えばバイキングのときどれが食べたいか量はどの
くらいがいいのかはっきり言わないと全部食べられなくなったりして捨てなければならなくなりま
す。
私達はこのサマープログラムを通して色々なことを学び、貴重な体験もするととができました。学
んだことを日本に帰ってただの思い出にするのではなく、これから活用できるようにしていきたい
です。

Keio Chutobu Students
I think that coming to Keio has been a great experience and taught me many things. I love it
here because you get to meet lots of interesting people from many different cultures. Also,
because while you have fun you also work hard and attended classes. At first I was nervous
but over time I got to know everyone and had a wonderful time. I would recommend for
anyone interested in American or Japanese culture to come to Keio.

今年の夏は夏期講習2013@慶應義塾ニューヨーク学院（高等部）で2週間寮生活をしました。最初
は二週間なんてすぐに過ぎると思っていました。けれど来てみると、一日、一日が普段よりも充実
していていつもどれだけおろそかに一日を過ごしていたのかと痛感しました。それと同時にその時
間を大事にしないといけないとも思いました。この夏期講習の中にはビデオ作りがありました。私
はインストラクターさんがおっしゃったことを日本語に訳してグループの皆に伝えました。そのと
きにどう簡潔にわかりやすく人に伝えるべきか学びました。夏期講習では、沢山のことを学んだけ
れど、私にとって、これが一番学べてよかったと思います。たった二週間だったと思いますが、こ
のサマープログラムは私にてとってとても良い経験になりました。

まず、この2週間のプログラムを通じて、本当に多くの新しい経験ができたと思います。同じ慶
應でも、ニューヨークにあることだけで環境や雰囲気が異なっている感じがしました。特に大きな
グラウンドと豊かな緑の敷地に驚きました。また、今回初めての寮生活では、自分で洗濯したり
と、当たり前のようで初めての経験がたくさんあり、新鮮でした。最初はニューヨークの涼しい気
候になかなか慣れることができず、寝冷えをしたり風邪気味になったりしましたが、そのうち普段
通りに生活できるようになりました。そして、何よりもニューヨーク学院に来てよかったと思えた
のは、スポーツがたくさんできることです。ネイティブの子たちとは、最初言葉が通じずに会話が
できませんでした。でも、オープンジムの時間や、スポーツアクティビティの授業があったおかげ
で、バスケやサッカーを通じて仲良くなることができました。スポーツに言語は関係ないというこ
とを初めて実感しました。特に、日本でやっていたバスケがアメリカでも通用したことで、自分の
得意な分野を表現できたため嬉しかったです。インターンの先生方とも気軽に英語で話せるように
なりました。
そして、もう一つの感動は、ニューヨークの街の中にありました。ＤＣＴＶのプロジェクト制作
にあたって、ニューヨーク市内を行動してビデオを撮りましたが、自分のイメージとは全くことな
る街並み、ビル街がそこにはありました。僕は9/11についてのドキュメンタリーだったのですが、
実際に現場を見に行き、こんなビルが集中している街の中心部でテロが起きたんだと思うと恐ろし
くなりました。ですが、跡地はかなり整備されていて、それに比べると日本の大震災は復興が遅れ
ているなと感じました。他に、バスの中からタイムズスクエアを見たり、船に乗って自由の女神像
を見学したりと、ニューヨークの魅力を存分に体感できたと思います。地下鉄も、改札から椅子ま
で日本と違う部分があって興味深かったです。
アメリカに行くと価値観が変わるとか、イメージが変わるとか言いますが、2週間のサマープログ
ラムを通じて、まさにそれを実感できたと思います。今回のプログラムは留学の準備でもあるの
で、ぜひ今度留学するときはこの経験を生かしていきたいと感じました。
