Playground Peacemakers in Action!!!
The Elementary Division
Corn Corn Corn!
This fall, the Grade 5’s and 6’s continue to show
leadership as Playground Peacemakers (PPMs) on
the schoolyard. Two students patrol the field every day at lunch recess, ready to help the younger
students to resolve their conflicts peacefully. The
PPMs wear a distinctive bright yellow pinnie, so it’s
easy for other students to find them. CIS teachers
appreciate the help, and our students are learning
to work together and show initiative. The PPMs
are trained to ask questions and help find a solution to everyday problems between friends and
classmates. Here are some of the questions they
might ask:
・What happened?
・Was it an accident or on purpose?
・Did anyone see?
・What happened next?
・How do you think we could solve this problem
fairly?
Keep up the good work, PPMs! And thank you to
all our younger students for taking part and making
our PPM program a success!
この秋、５、6年生は校庭平和維持員（PPM）として
リーダーシップを発揮しています。2人の生徒が毎日
お昼休みに校庭をパトロールし、年下の生徒の問題解
決をお手伝いしています。PPMのメンバーは、黄色の
ユニフォームを着ているため、すぐに彼らの存在を見
つけることができます。CISの先生たちは、PPMのヘ
ルプに感謝しています。この活動を通して生徒たち
は、共に協力し、率先して活動することを学んでいま
す。PPMのメンバーは、問題解決のために適切な質問
をするよう訓練されていて、友達やクラスメートの間
に起きる日常の問題の解決の一助として日々活動して
くれています。
PPMの質問の数例：

・偶然起きたのですか、それとも意図的ですか？
・誰か他に見ていた人はいましたか？
・次に何が起きましたか？
・この問題を公平に解決するために私たちは何ができ

PPMメンバー、この調子でこれからも頑張りましょ
う。また下級生の皆さんも、ご協力ありがとうござい
ます。皆さんのお蔭で、このPPMプログラムがとても
意味のあるものになっています！

Saying Goodbye!!
For those who might not have heard,
we had to relinquish a great member of
the Columbia team this summer. Matt
Turner, who had been a member of
our team since 2005 left to pursue a
life a little closer to home. Matt, his
wife Yuko and two children, Anna 4,
and Jun 2, moved back to Matt’s
hometown, near Calgary, Alberta.
Matt was a big kid, with a great heart
and had a passion for the classroom. He was
often the first one in and last one out the door,
working hard and putting forth his best effort to
do what he enjoys doing most, educating and
interacting with kids of all ages, levels, skills and
personalities. Adding to this, Matt had some big
contributions in philanthropy such as collecting
caps that help African children and running the
yearly food drives which will be big shoes to fill.
However, the hardest part to reproduce will be
maintaining the light-hearted, humor-filled presence the big man brought with him everyday.
Sayonara and we will miss you Mr. Matt Turner,
many happy returns (we hope).

まだご存じない方もいらっしゃると思
いますが、今年の夏にコロンビアチー
ムから一人大事なメンバーを手放すこ
とになりました。２００５年からコロ
ンビアに来たマット・ターナー先生
は、奥様と二人のお子様（アンナ４歳
とジュン２歳）とともに故郷のカナ
ダ・アルバータ州に帰ることになりま
した。ターナー先生はとても情熱的で、寛大な
心でいつも生徒と接していました。一番早くに
学校に来て、一番最後に学校を出ることが多
く、努力を惜しまない人でした。
これに加え、数多くの慈善活動にも積極的に力
を注いできました。（アフリカの子供たちの援
助のためのペットボトルの蓋の回収やフードド
ライブ運動など）
彼が貢献してきたことは数限りありません。し
かし、最も惜しまれることは、彼が毎日我々に
もたらしてくれた彼の愉快な存在自体です。
さようなら。いつまでも元気でいてください。

Elementary General News!!
Welcome back C.I.S. Elementary. After a lengthy,
sizzling, hot summer vacation, the first few days back
were understandably sluggish for everyone (let’s
blame the extreme heat)! However, it is now full
steam ahead for the C.I.S. Elementary Crew, as another busy term is well under way. News includes a
new face in grade five, Koh Sakamoto. Welcome to
you and your family to the Columbia Elementary
Community. While we sadly bid farewell to a popular teacher, Mr. Turner in June, all of us at C.I.S.
would also like to extend a warm welcome to our
newest teacher in grade three, Mrs. Goodfellow.
Second term is an active time for school events. Students are gearing up for Sports Day, thinking over
what a head-turning Halloween costume could be
and wondering what excitement the school-wide
Fiesta will bring. The anticipation for these festivities
is beginning to mount. For the month of September,
the theme in the elementary division is, ‘Making
Smart Choices.’ We all want the students to enjoy
school each day and to all arrive home safely each
night. Altogether let’s continue to work hard to
make the C.I.S. Elementary a super, safe place to be.

小学生の皆さん、お帰りなさい。長くそして暑～
い夏休みを終えた初めの数日間は、動きの鈍い感
じも見受けられましたが（このとんでもない暑さ
のせいにしましょう！）、小学課程のメンバーを
待ち受けている新たな忙しい学期が始動した今、
活力に満ちた毎日を過ごしています。小学課程の
ニュースとして、今学期５年生クラスに新たなお
友達、坂元晃君を迎えました。ようこそコロンビ
アへ。一方、とても人気のあったターナー先生が
６月に去ってしまったことは少し残念でしたが、3
年生のクラスに新しく赴任してきたグットフェ
ロー先生を温かくお迎えしたいと思います。
２学期目は、多くの行事でとても活動的な学期と
なります。生徒達はスポーツデーに向けてギアを
入れかえ、ハロウィンのコスチュームに頭を悩ま
せ、学校全体の大きな行事であるクリスマスフィ
エスタではどんな楽しいことが待ち受けているの
だろうかと、それぞれに想いを膨らませているこ
とと思います。小学課程９月のテーマは「適切な
選択をしよう」です。私達は、全生徒が毎日楽し
く学校で過ごし、毎晩安全に帰宅できることを
願っています。コロンビアの小学課程がとっても
安全な楽しい場となるように、皆で協力して作り
上げていきましょう。
My Summer Time in Canada!!

Have you ever been to Canada? I went to Kelowna where very
beautiful and amazing place in Canada in this summer vacation. I
want to talk about three experiences which are “Host Family”,
“School” and “Activities”. First day, I met with my host mother,
father and their children who were friendly and kind. They received other international students. I couldn’t become familiar with
their family in couple days but while we’re together, and then I
adapted their surroundings. On the weekend, they always took me
many places, such as lake, mountain, park and amusement ground.
Sometimes, I played with their children. I thought that was good
practice to speak English. Next, I went to language study school in
Kelowna called International Gateway Kelowna (IGK). Many kinds
of students commuted that school. My classmates were older than
me and they were mostly European. They were friendly and I never bored in class. I always had some activities after the lunch. One
day, I made “Dream Catcher”. It seemed that spider web but it
looked good and I enjoyed making them. That was fun and sometimes I worked with other students came from Taiwan. Finally, I
learned many things in this trip and I’ll use this valuable experience
practically in my life.

The Last Day of the Term!!
July 1st was another event-filled day
while we celebrated Canada Day at
CIS. The students enjoyed numerous
outdoor games such as Limbo, Pinata, Get Out of Dodgeball and some
parachute games. They also had the
pleasure of being entertained by a
fantastic musical group from Senegal
lead by Omar Guiandefall. The students and staff enjoyed participating
and dancing along to many of the
songs. We would like to thank the
PTSA for organizing and helping to
set up for this very special day. See

Make Good Choices!!
Another summer break has come to an end,
as did another session of Elementary Summer School at C.I.S. Students had an excellent time throughout the two week program, which was specifically designed to help
students develop and strengthen their current English skills. On a particular note,
students enjoyed making a film in Mr. Berry’s class, while students practiced composing and delivering speeches in Mr. Lucier’s
class. Hopefully, next year’s Summer School
enrolment will continue to grow, as it certainly was an engaging and enjoyable time
for students and teachers all around.
We are excited to welcome all our students back
for another exciting learning experience this fall
in our elementary program. This fall our theme is
“Make Good Choices!” As part of our character
education program students will be reminded to
make good choices about playing safely with their
friends, how to be a good friend, and how to
behave properly when traveling to and from
school. It is very important that our students
learn to be responsible and learn to make good
choices both at school and outside the school.
These are life skills that we all need to learn!
C.I.Sでの小学課程サマースクールを経て、今年の
夏休みも終りを迎えました。英語スキルの向上、
秋学期が始まり、小学生全員に再会できたことをとても
嬉しく思います。今学期の小学課程のテーマは「良い選
択をしよう！」です。人格形成教育プログラムの一環と
強化を目的とした二週間のプログラムに参加した

“Summer Camp 2010!!”

Another Summer Camp at CIS has passed! It was a whirlwind three week course for prospective elementary, and junior high students. On
the first day, our school was turned into a sea of crimson-red, t-shirt clad students aged 4 to 15. We had some returning students from last
year’s camp, students who attend our Saturday school program and of course, new students who had never walked these hallways before.
It made for a nice mix of familiar and new faces. Week I started off with an Environmental bang! Lessons were solely comprised of topics
from an Environmental theme. Students had fun participating in hands- on activities, sharing information with their groups and partners and
hopefully taking something away from their teachers’ lessons. Next, week II was wild! Again, lessons were thematic and this time students
were introduced to the world of Living Creatures. A range of animals were introduced and studied, from those being extinct, endangered
or just unique, wonderful looking species! Finally week III touched on cultures. I was fortunate enough to have two French-speaking students born in France. This lent itself to a very cool, dynamic of a classroom, as there were at other times, students from China, Canada,
Germany, Taiwan and Australia. Judging by the smiling faces for those three weeks, I think it’s safe to say that Columbia has hit on something big for its Summer students. Well-done everybody! It was a pleasure to be a part of such a dynamic team of teachers and admin. staff!
先日２０１０年開催のサマーキャンプが終了しました。小学生と中学生にとってはめまぐるしい三週間だったと思います。初日には、真っ赤なコロン
ビアシャツに包まれた４歳から１５歳までの子供たちで活気にあふれていました。その中には昨年度から引き続き参加している子供もいれば、土曜ス
クールに参加している子供もおり、もちろん全く初めてコロンビアを訪れる子供もいました。新入りの子供たちと顔なじみの子供たちの融合でした。第
一週目は“環境”をテーマにした授業から始まりました。子供たちは多くの体験活動やグループ活動を楽しんでいました。授業から色々なことを吸収で
きたのではないでしょうか。第二週目になると、いっそう慌しくなりました。一週目とは変わり、第二週目の授業のテーマは“世界に生きる生き物”で
した。絶滅寸前の動物から独特な動物まで多種多様な動物が紹介されました。第三週目になると、“文化”についてふれました。私は幸運にもクラスに
フランス育ちの子供が二人おり、授業を活気づけました。別の年には中国、ドイツ、カナダ、台湾、そしてオーストラリアなどあらゆるところから子供
がきており、毎年国際豊かなクラスになっています。三週間のプログラムを終えた子供たちの顔を拝見すると、サマーキャンプは大成功に終わったと
いって過言ではないと思います。みなさんお疲れ様でした！こんな力強い教師やスタッフの一員になれたことをとても嬉しく思います。
Book Fair Follow - Up!!
In June, Columbia International
School had our second Book Fair.
This year, RIC Publications brought
books to us. Three-hundred-sixtysix books were sold and added to
the home libraries of our students!
We are happy to have had such a
successful literary event and getting
so many books into the hands of
our readers! We are looking forward to another one
sometime in the future. In addition to adding to students’ libraries, we received books from RIC Publications to add to our school library. A very big thank
you to G9 Megumi Ohata's parents who donated 24
books and an Encyclopedia Britannica CD-ROM! If
you have English books at home that your children
have outgrown, consider donating them to our school
libraries. The teachers and students appreciate them
and it is a great way to make room for more books at
home! If you attended our book fair and have any
comments, questions, or suggestions, please let us
know!

た。今年はRIC出版から本を提供
していただきました。３６６冊も
の本が売れ、生徒の皆さんのお家
の本棚の愛読書が増えたことと思
います。このような機会をいただ
いて大変嬉しく思います。近いう
ちにまたこのような機会を提供で
きればと思います。RIC出版よりたくさんの本が寄
贈されました。さらに、９年生の大畑恵さんのお母
様より２４冊の本とブリタニカ辞典のCD-ROMをい
ただきました。どうもありがとうございました。も
しご自宅に読まなくなってしまった本などがござい
ましたら、ぜひ学校に寄付していただけませんで
しょうか。ご協力の程お願い致します。学校側に
とっても大変嬉しいことですし、さらに他の本を買
うスペースがご自宅にもできるのではないでしょう

Go Spirit Bears!!
Juniors, New Juniors!!
September 1st marked the beginning of
the fall term, which now means Art club is busy
preparing for a piñata event to be held next month
during Columbia’s Halloween event. Last term, Art
club members and a group of after school volunteers
prepared the paper maché shells of the piñata. This
term, they are busy painting and decorating each
piñata in the theme of Halloween. Designs include
cross-eyed spiders, spooky love hearts, and of
course the obligatory jack-o-lantern! Each piñata
will be stuffed with candy and chocolate in accordance with modern custom. Now some of you are
probably wondering what a piñata is? Well, a piñata
is a paper maché decoration that is usually suspended from a height for blindfolded children to beat
with sticks. Piñata contain treats like candy, or small
toys. Once the piñata is broken, the inside contents
spill to the floor, resulting in a mad dash to grab as
much candy as possible.
In Mexico, piñata are believed to have
originated among the Aztecs, Mayans, and other
native peoples of Mexico, who made clay pots in the
shape of their gods. The pots were meant to be
broken forcefully with poles and sticks, so the contents spilled to signify abundance or favors from the
gods. Historians tell us that during the birthday celebration of the Aztec god of war, Huitzilopochtli,
priests hung a clay pot on a pole in the temple. The
pot was adorned with colourful feathers and filled
with small treasures like bead ornaments, colourful
or painted stones, berries, or nuts. When the pot
was broken with a stick the little treasures spilled on
the feet of the god as an offering. The Mayans played
a game where the central player’s eyes were covered with a cloth, while he tried to hit the pot that
was suspended by a string. However legend also has
it that piñata actually came from China and were
introduced to the West by Marco Polo. It is said
that he discovered the Chinese fashioning figures of
cows, oxen and buffaloes, covered with coloured
paper and adorned with harnesses and trappings.
Special colours traditionally greeted the New Year.
When the mandarins knocked the figure hard with
sticks of various colors, seeds spilled forth. After
burning the remains, people gathered the ashes for
good luck throughout the year.
Now you know everything there is to
know about piñata. So don’t be shy and come join
the fun on October 31st – you will see firsthand why
this custom has continued to enchant celebrations
and parties from all around the world as far back as
ancient times.

９月１日から新しい学期が始まりまし
た。来月開催されるハロウィンイベントに向け
て、アートクラブではピニャータ作りの準備を
始めています。先学期にアートクラブのメン
バーとボランティアとともにピニャータの型を
準備しました。今学期に入ってハロウィンの
テーマにそってピニャータの型に色をつけた
り、デコレーションをつけたりしています。十
字架の目を持つスパイダー、不気味なハートや
もちろん定番のかぼちゃまで様々なデザインを
作っています。それぞれのピニャータの中には
飴やチョコレートなどのお菓子が入っていま
す。ここでピニャータが一体何なのか分からな
い人もいるかもしれません。ピニャータについ
て説明します。ピニャータとは紙製のクス玉人
形のことで、それをどこかにつるし、目隠しを
した子供たちがそれを棒でたたきわります。ピ
ニャータの中には飴やおもちゃなどが入ってい
ます。ピニャータが割れたら、中身がこぼれ、
子供たちは中身の飴やおもちゃをめがけて一目
散に駆けつけます。
メキシコではピニャータの起源は神の
形の土器を作ったアステカ（マヤ人）やそのほ
かの原始民族からだといわれています。その土
器は棒などで壊すことにより、豊富な富や神の
恵みを得られると信じられていました。歴史家
によるとアステカの生誕お祝いの日に、寺院の
ポールに土器を飾ったそうです。その土器には
色鮮やかな羽が飾られ、中には小さな宝物が入
れられたそうです。棒でその土器が壊されたと
き、その中の宝物がこぼれ、神にささげられた
そうです。マヤ人は、紐でつるされた土器を布
で目隠しをしながら壊すゲームをしたそうで
す。しかし、一説によるとピニャータはもとも
と中国から来て、マルコ・ポーロによりヨー
ロッパのほうに伝えられたとも言われていま
す。マルコ・ポーロは中国の正月に紙で作られ
た色鮮やかな牛やバッファローの飾りなどを発
見したことからきたといわれています。この飾
りを色鮮やかな棒でたたくことにより、種が零
れ落ちました。残った飾りを燃やして出た灰に
その年の幸運をお祈りしました。

We are the Champions…..of Futsal!!

During the spring term, Columbia fielded a boys’ team in the
first year of the International School Futsal League. The league
saw the team compete against other international schools like
K. International, Canadian and International Secondary
School. The team did well in the league games and found ourselves first place going into the final tournament. Finding ourselves in first we were scheduled to play the fourth place
team in the first game of the tournament. The boys were
nervous at the start and at half time, we found ourselves
down by a goal. The team did not give up and worked hard to
get the equalizer. Shortly before the final whistle we scored a
great goal that put us up by one. The team defense tightened
up and when the final whistle went, we found ourselves
bound for the finals. In the final, the boys played much better
and we found ourselves out to a quick lead. The game was
intense and fast paced. The final score
saw the team win by two and claim the
first Championship!!! Well done, boys.
I hope that we can have more students
come out and join us next spring so
that we can defend our title. The
Championship team was Kimitomo
Konno (12), Ulyssess Self (12), Shushi
Ogawa (12), Yasutaka Maekawa (12),
Yutaro Asada (12), Kazuki Imai (12),
Kousuke Takehashi (11), Taisei Watabe
(11), Shoichiro Watahiki (11), and Kohei Maekawa (10). Again congratulations boys!! You played
well.

Also this term we had a feeder team made up of juniors that
played a few games with the seniors and on their own to gain
experience for next year. This team also did well and went
undefeated in all their games. The members of this team were
Jeffery LaRose (8), Tomo Watanabe(8), and Hiroyuki Ukigaya

クール・フットサルリーグへの初参戦が確定しました。同リーグは、KInternational School やCanadian International School、そしてISSなどが所属
する、国内最大級のフットサルリーグです。初参戦であったにも関わら
ず、コロンビアメンバーは大いに奮戦し、辛くも決勝トーナメントへの
一番乗りを果たすことに成功しました。決勝トーナメントの初戦で顔を
付き合わせたのは、昨年トーナメント４位のチームでした。対戦相手の
貫禄に圧倒されてか、試合前半のコロンビアメンバーの動きには切れが
なく、コロンビアが１点を追う展開で前半が終了しました。後半、コロ
ンビアは体制を建て直し、まずは同点ゴールを奪取。その後も、勢いに
のったコロンビアの攻撃が執拗に続き、ホイッスルの間際、終に、奇跡
的な逆転ゴールを奪うことに成功しました。コロンビアは守備体制を整
え、意気消沈する相手チームの動きを封じ、決勝戦への切符を手に入れ
ました。決勝戦では、その名に恥じない激しい攻防戦が展開されまし
た。前哨戦でトーナメントの流れを掴ん
だコロンビアのクラブメンバーは、試合
開始早々激しい攻撃をしかけ、試合の流
れを常にリードすることが出来ました。
その流れのまま試合は終了し、コロンビ
アはトーナメント初参戦にして、初の栄
冠を手に入れることができました。この
栄光は正に、コロンビアの男子フットサ
ルメンバーが自らの手で勝ち取ったもの
です。この功績によって、我らがコロン
ビア男子フットサルクラブは更に発展
し、その後輩達が、２連覇への道のりを歩んでくれることでしょう。そ
れまでの間、本大会で奮迅した Kimitomo Konno (12)、Ulyssess Self
Kazuki Imai (12)、Kousuke Takehashi (11)、Taisei Watabe (11)、Shoichiro
Watahiki (11)、そして Kohei Maekawa (10)には、最後までこのクラブチー
ムをサポートしてくれるよう願っています。本当におめでとう。
同じく今春、レギュラーチームでプレーする人材を育成するためのジュ
ニアチームが結成されました。今期のメンバーは、Jeffery LaRose (8)、
バーや、他のチームとの練習試合を組んだりして、来年の活躍に向け
て、準備しています。今期、全戦全勝の結果を見れば、彼らの活躍は間
違いないでしょう。
クラブチームの活躍に貢献してくれた全ての人に、感謝の意を伝えたい
と思います。皆さんの助力なくしては、ここまでの成功を納めることは
出来なかったでしょう。Mr. Hallは全日程のスケジュール管理を担当
し、少しでも多くの試合をチームが経験できるように工夫してくれまし
た。Mr. BentzとMr. Turnerは、ホームゲームをより盛り上げる為に、
様々なサポートを提供してくれました。チームのマネージャーを勤めて
くれたHimemi Yamada、そして、チームの軌跡を写真に残してくれた
Nana Kimuraにもとても感謝しています。本当にありがとうございまし
た。

け、国内だけで事がすむことは考えられ
ません。若者たちの活躍の場は必ず世界
に広がりますし、日本にいても一緒に働
く仲間は多国籍になってきます。自国を
飛び出すことで、自国のすばらしさを再
認識し、自信を持ってアイデンティ
ティーを固めて欲しいと願っています。
これからは世界市民としての自覚をもっ
て世界中の人たちと世界中で活躍してく
ださい。そのためには必ず、必ず、２～
４年ほど海外で生活をしながら勉強した
り仕事をしたりして経験を深めてくださ
い。
As many media and news mentioned about
Japanese students are loosing enthusiasm in
international challenges and try stay domestic
without challenges. Well it may be true however attending those mentioned fairs will give
you a whole different ideas about the news
we heard. Yes, there are many young people
are getting ready for overseas challenges. It is
very clear that Japan has to work with other
countries and the people with different backgrounds and values. Our students' activity
field will be "the world", and Japan will be a
part of the world. By going out once for a
while and see their own country and culture
from outside will give them reevaluation of
their own values that is needed to be proud
of their building identity as a world citizen.
For that, please, please try spend 2 to 4 years
out of your country by studying or working
and enhance your life.

At the end of last term, students in Mr. Morrison and Mr. McKay’s Grade 11 BTA3O course had an option
to write the internationally recognized Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam. It is a very challenging
exam that tests individuals on their advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications. Columbia International
School had 12 students take the Microsoft Word 2007 exam and 9 successfully passed it! We would like to
congratulate all of the 12 students for challenging themselves and the 9 students who successfully passed
it. Well done, everyone!!
２０１０年春学期末に、モリソン先生とマッケイ先生のBTA30を履修した１１年生の生徒は、国際的に認知されている
マイクロソフトオフィスのスペシャリスト認定試験にチャレンジしました。マイクロソフトのアプリケーションスキル
をテストする非常に難しい試験ですが、コロンビアの１２名の生徒がWord２００７のテストに挑戦し、内９名が見事認
定書を取得しました。１２名全ての生徒の皆さんの挑戦を称えるとともに、９名の皆さん合格おめでとうございます！

Summer Prom Blasts Off!!

On June 30th, the Student Council organized a Summer Prom, and many students from grade 10 to 12 attended our
first Summer Prom. All of the students
had a very relaxing and exciting time
there before the summer break. It was
the first time for us, the
Student Council, to host
a prom, and it turned
out to be a success. This
prom was hosted in order to celebrate the students (grade 13) who
graduated this July, since
those students do not
usually have a graduation
ceremony at the end of
the Spring term. The Student Council had been
preparing for this prom
since the beginning of
the term, and it was a
little challenging for us
because we had no clue
how the prom would go.
We asked the students
to sign up, put up posters, and made announcements in the morning, and as a
result, nearly 50 students signed up to
come to the Summer Prom! The decoration and the set up of the gym took
quite a long time, and all the Student
Council members worked really hard on
this event. The day of the Summer Prom
was a blast! Students brought in snacks
as their admission fee, ready to have
some fun. Some of the students brought
in beautiful dresses and suits to dress up
at the prom. By the time everybody arrived, the gym was set up with a lot of
food, drinks and a stage for the members of the group “Tera $ tationz,” a
group which was formed by three of the
graduates of Columbia International
School – Ray Saito, Ryn Yanase and
Shuhei Ikeda, to perform as a special

guest. The Summer Prom started just
before 2 o’clock with the Tera$tationz’
energetic and exciting song, and from
then on, they became the DJ of the
Prom and playing songs by other artists
or singing their original songs. The gym
was instantly filled with striking music
along with chatters and laughters from
students making it into a gigantic party
house. The
Student
Council also had an
event where people
wrote messages on ribbons that were in different colours and represented different relationships. For example, red
ribbons were for the
person they love, and
blue ribbons were for
friendship. Some people
gave red ribbons to their
boyfriends, and some
gave blue ribbons to
their friends with their
own special message on
it. The prom finished
around 3 o’clock, with
the Tera $ tationz performing a slow song and then their new
exciting song. We, the Student Council
will like to thank a lot to the
Tera$tationz who came all the way to
perform and make the prom an exciting
event, to the members of the Summer
Prom committee of the Student Council
– Aiko, Juri, Kanna, Hitomi, Maya, Marie,
Misaki, Yuzuki, Mari, Ayaka and Satoko, a
special thanks to Hiroko who helped us
getting ideas for the prom, and to all the
students who came to the Summer
Prom! We hope all the students who
came had a fabulous time and that this
prom became one of the precious memories at Columbia for all the summer
graduates. Thank you again and the Student Council will be looking forward to
meeting everybody next year!

Summer Prom Blasts Off cont.!!
生徒会主催によるサマープロムが6月30日
に開かれ、10年生から12年生までのたくさ
んの生徒が出席し、夏休み前の楽しくてリ
ラックスできる時間を過ごすことができま
した。生徒会にとって、サマープロムを企
画するのは初めてのことでしたが、とても
良いプロムになりまし
た。7月に卒業した13年
生を祝うために開かれ
たこのプロムでした
が、初めてプロムを主
催した生徒会にとっ
て、プロムは、やり甲
斐があると同時に、
ちょっとした挑戦でも
ありました。準備は4月
から始まり、参加者の
署名集め、ポスター作
り、朝のアナウンス、会場である体育館の
飾り付けなどは時間がかかりましたが、生
徒会全員が一生懸命働きました。その結
果、当日は 50 人もの生徒の皆さんが集ま
り、とびきり楽しくておもしろいプロムに
なりました。生徒の中には、綺麗なドレス
やスーツで着飾った人達もいました。参加
費として持ち寄ってもらったお菓子も集ま
り、生徒会から飲み物が準備され、プロム
は始まりました。そのスタートを切ったの
が、今回のプロムのDJでもあるスペシャル
ゲストのTera$tationzでした。Tera$tationzは
コロンビアの卒業生3人によって構成された
グループです。彼らオリジナルの歌や、さ
まざまなアーティストの曲によって、パー
ティーは盛り上がりました。パーティーの
最中には、生徒会が企画したリボンの交換
も行われました。リボンに、メッセージを
書き、渡したい人に渡すというものです。
リボンには様々な色があり、赤いリボンは
愛、青いリボンは友
情、など、異なった色
にはそれぞれ意味があ

演奏後、プロムは終わ
りを迎えました。私達
生徒会は、プロムを盛

Ayaka and Satoko)、プロム開催にあたっての
アドバイスをくれた卒業生のHiroko、そし
てプロムに参加してくれた生徒全員に感謝
したいと思います。このプロムが、参加者
全員にとって、忘れられないような時間が
過ごせたものであったなら、とても嬉しく
思います。また来年もさらに楽しくなった
プロムで、皆さんにお会いできるのを楽し
みにしています。

CIS Student Charity Work in India!!

Christmas Fiesta
on December 12th
On this summer vacation, I donated a small present to 150 poor children who live in
India. Last summer, I went to a place called Kolkata, located in India. As I stayed there,
I felt moved, because there were many street children everywhere, wanted for help,
and trying their best to live, and that this city is the opposite of Japan from looking at
the gap between rich and poor, so I thought I really wanted to help them.
The Senior Division
So, on July 1st 2010, on the last day of the school, I asked C.I.S students, and teachers
to donate money to India, and I have collected ¥11,427. Then on July 18th 2010, I arrived in India, than after a while, with that money, for each child, I bought a pencil, an
eraser, a pencil sharpener, a notebook, soap, and snacks to 150 street children. It was
a lot of work wrapping everything together to 150 children, and planning out and deciding where to donate those things. I got a lot of support, from my mother, and my
mother’s acquaintances.
Finally on August 16th 2010, my mother, my mother’s acquaintances, and I went to
three different places to give the presents to 150 children. In each place, children behaved very differently, separated by the social levels. From doing this charity, I felt
more interest on helping those poor children, than I ever did. I was very happy to see
children’s smile when they got their donations, as well. At last, I really appreciate for
those people who donated money. Thank you very much!!
今年の夏、私は150個のプレゼントをインドに住んでいる150人の貧しい
子供達の為にチャリティーで寄付しました。昨年の夏インドのカルカッ
タへ行った時、沢山のストリートチルドレンが助けを求め、必死に生き
ようとしている姿を見て、異様だと感じ、そして貧富の差が日本と比べ
あまりに酷いと感じたので、助けたいと思いました。
1学期の最終日、2010年7月１日にコロンビアの生徒と先生方にご協力い
ただき、インドへ寄付するための募金を集め、全てで1万1427円集まり
ました。そして18日、インドへ行き、そこで子供達一人ひとりに鉛筆、
消しゴム、鉛筆削り、ノート、石鹸、お菓子を購入しました。母や知人
達から沢山のサポートを受け、150人の子供達のために全てをラッピン
グし、どこで寄付するかを計画しました。
8月16日、母や知人達と共に、3つの違う場所へ寄付をしにいきました。
３つの場所全てで子供達の反応が全く違いました。このチャリティーを
行ったことで、貧困に喘いでいる子供達を助ける事にもっと興味を持ち
ました。プレゼントを受け取った時に子供達の笑顔を見て私も嬉しくな
りました。そして募金をしていただいた全ての方に感謝します。ありが
とうございました!

Hello friends! What did you do over vacation?
Welcome back to CIS! For new students, we welcome all of you and hope you all have a wonderful
school life with us! We are here to help all the
students in CIS, so if anything happens or you have
something you’re not sure about, please tell or ask
us! We will try our best to make sure everyone
enjoys school life.
We prepare lots of events for you to enjoy, and
support students to change CIS systems. For example, summer prom happened in the end of last
term, or surveys about lunch. We continuously try
our best to make CIS comfortable place for students to be, so we strongly want you to tell us
anything you want to say, and ask us anything not
sure! We hope all of you can enjoy the new term!

こんにちは！久しぶりの学校、楽しんでいます
か？新入生の皆さん、はじめまして。CISにようこ
そ！私たちはCISの在校生全員が楽しい学校生活を

が必要なことがあったり疑問があれば、わたした
ち生徒会に伝えてください！皆さんのご希望に沿
えるよう、ベストをつくします。
私たちは沢山の学校行事を企画したり生徒のサ
ポートをしたりしています。たとえば、前学期末
のサマープロムや、ランチに関するアンケートな
どです。これらのイベント・アンケートなどを通
して、CISを快適な環境にするために生徒会は努力
し続けます。そのため、皆さんの意見・質問をい
つでも受け付けています！新学期を楽しんでくだ

The Maiden Journey of the CIS Outdoor Adventure Club!!
On Friday, June 18 2010, seven members of the CIS Outdoor Adventure
Club (OAC) and two teachers, Mr. Goldie and Mr. Paulson, went to Chichibu-Tama National Park for the first-ever OAC field trip. We traveled by
JR train to Okutama Station in western Tokyo. There's a campground just
ten minutes' walk from the station, and we pitched our tents on the gravel
riverbed next to the Tama River. After a few lessons in campcraft from Mr.
Goldie, we climbed nearby Mt. Nokogiri. The trail was tough in places - we
climbed 200 stairs! - and it started to rain as we approached the summit,
but everyone rose to the challenge of climbing for five hours, and we hiked
through an old-growth forest as the fog rolled in. Beautiful!
After our climb we relaxed at a nearby onsen. You could see our tents
from the rotenburo outdoor hot spring.
Back at camp, we cooked dinner and then went for a stroll through the
town of Okutama, which is a very quiet place even on a Friday night.
It rained on and off throughout the night, but everyone did a good job of
setting up their tents so no-one got wet.
Saturday morning the sun broke through the rain clouds, and we ate breakfast, struck camp, and headed back to Tokyo in good weather.
For some club members, this was their first-ever experience hiking in the
mountains, sleeping in a tent, and cooking on camp stoves. The rain added
an extra challenge to the trip, but everyone did their best and stayed positive, and a great time was had by all!
Congratulations to the members of the CIS Adventure Club. We look forward to our next adventure.
６月１８日（金）にCISのアウトドアアドベンチャークラブの７人の
メンバーは引率教師二人（ゴールディー先生とポールソン先生）と
ともに秩父多摩国立公園に遠足に行きました。電車で奥多摩まで行
き、奥多摩の駅から十分くらいのところにキャンプ場があり、キャ
ンプ場の近くにある多摩川沿いにテントを張りました。ゴール
ディー先生からキャンプについての指導を受けたあと、近くにある
鋸山に登りました。２００段もの階段を登ったり、頂上付近で予期
せぬ雨にあたったりし、なかなか登るのは大変でした。しかし生徒
たちは決してめげずに５時間登り続けました。霧のかかった森を通
ることもあり、とても美しかったです。
登山の後、近くの温泉に立ち寄りました。川の近くに張ったテント
も露天風呂から見ることが出来ました。キャンプ場に戻ってから夕
飯を作り、その跡に奥多摩の町を散策しました。金曜日の夜にも関
わらず、奥多摩の町はとても静かでした。夜中雨が降りましたが、
生徒たちは上手にテントを張っていましたので、誰もぬれることは
ありませんでした。土曜の朝は快晴の中で迎えることができまし
た。その中でまず朝食を作り、テントを解体し、東京に戻りまし
た。
登山をしたり、テントで寝泊りしたり、外で調理したりすることが
初めてのメンバーも中にはいました。しかしみんなあきらめないで
楽しいキャンプ生活を満喫することができました。参加してくれた
CISアドベンチャークラブのメンバーたち、みんなお疲れ様！次のア
ドベンチャーが楽しみですね

事実がある。精神と肉体を
はっきり区別する事実であ
る。肉体は精神と異なり限界
がある。これを示すものの１
つに、肉体は無限に力強さを
増し続けたり、技能や魅力が
上がり続けたりしないことが
ある。ほとんどの人は30歳に
なるまでに衰え始めているの
だ。しかし精神が到達できる
成長と発達の度合いに限界は
ない。精神は特定の年齢で成
長を止めたりしない。脳自体
が例えば病気のせいで能力を
失ったとき、初めて精神は技
能と理解力を伸ばす力を失う
のだ。
これが人間に関する最も注
目に値する事柄の１つだ。実
際それは人間と、発育の過程
である一定の段階以上には精
神的に成長しないように思え
るほかの動物との大きな相違
点といってよいだろう。しか
し人間のこの大きな強みは大
きな危険を伴っている。筋肉と
同じく、使われないと精神は弱
くなることがある。この弱くな
る過程は退化と呼ばれる。精神
における筋肉の退化は精神的な
訓練をしないことに対して受け
る罰なのだ。そしてこれは恐ろ
しい罰だ。というのは精神の退
化は死に至る病気であるという
証拠があるからだ。たいへん多
くの忙しかった人が退職後すぐ
に死ぬという事実に対する説明
はほかにはないように思われ
る。彼らは仕事が彼らの精神に
課した要求によって生かされて
いたのだ。彼らはいわば外部か
らの力によって人工的にいかさ
れていたのだ。しかしそれらの
要求がなくなった途端、自らに
精神的活動を与える能力のない
人は考えるのを全くやめて死ん

今年から、コロンビアインターナショナルスクールの地域コミュニティー活動
の一環として、埼玉のプロ・バスケットボールチームである「さいたまブロン
コス」に、使用されていない夏休みや夜の時間に練習場として当校の体育館を
使用してもらうことになりました。一緒に“地域から世界へのチャレンジを応
援しよう！”ということを共通のテーマに、お互いに出来ることから相互活動
を始めました。ブロンコスチームは、コロンビア生のためにバスケットボール
クリニックを行うことを計画してもらっています。ＮＢ
Ａの経験がある選手も在籍しています。まだまだ多くの
ブースター（サッカーで言うサポーター）を必要として
いますので、皆様の応援をお願いします。
As one of our community involvements 2010-2011 school year, we started teamwork
with Broncos, the professional basketball team in Saitama, for a campaign "support

power relationship with each other by doing whatever we can do with less loads. The
team will give us some exclusive Basketball clinic or practice for CIS students and the

Getting Mentoring Right!!

Mentoring is a good way to get volunteer hours and build school spirit.
It is a good way to support the ESLR’s (Expected School Wide Learning Results) like “Foster the selfesteem and personal growth of each individual student.” Mr. Morrison and Mr. Twist help to organize
mentoring for grades 7 – 12. If any jr./sr. parent has a question about this programme, please contact
the office or Mr. Twist ([email protected]). If any elementary parent would like to more information, they should contact the Elementary office or speak to Ms. Whitcombe who is the Elementary
teacher advisor.

さあ、秋学期が始まりました。心身ともに一回
ある人には非常識だったり、その反対だったり
り大きくなったみなさんの元気な様子を見るこ
とができ、うれしく思います。そして今学期よ
することがあります。自分自身の考えや価値観
はとても大事ですが、自分の考えとは違う人も
り仲間となった新しいコロンビアファミリーの
同様に大事です。また自分にとっての当たり前
みなさん、コロンビア生活にはもう慣れました
か？
のことが、ある人にとっては考えられないこと
かもしれません。そこで意見が対立したとき
コロンビアファミリーのみなさんは、夏休み
中、いろいろな場所で多くの体験ができたので
は、“Fair is foul, and foul is fair.”を思い出
はないでしょうか。そしてさまざまな人と接
し、価値観の違いや地域での風習の違いなどを
通し、自分の価値観や性格そして考え方をより
深く知ることができた人もいるかもしれません
ね。
金子みすずさんの詩にある「みんなちがって、
みんないい」、私はとても好きです。十人十色
といいますが、同じように育てられた兄弟や姉
妹でさえ、やはり性格や考え方が違います。人
それぞれが違うからこそ、みんな素敵な存在な

それを踏まえて、“When in Rome, do as
the Romans do.” 「郷に入っては郷に従え。」
はどうでしょう。個性や一人ひとりの価値観は
大切です。しかしよその土地へ行ったらその土
地の風俗習慣に従うべきという考え方も、大勢
の人とうまく付き合う方法だといえます。関東
のみなさんが聞けば驚かれると思いますが、名
古屋や岐阜では、開店祝いの生花を断りなく持
ち帰ってもいいことになっています。開店前に
は、近所の方々や少し遠くの方までもがうわさ
を聞きつけ店前に集まり、開店とともにスタン
ド花の争奪戦が始まります。瞬く間に立派な切
花たちが持ち帰られ、店前のスタンドにはお祝
い札とシュロの葉などが残された無残な状態に
なります。祝い花は店主やいただく方にとって
も縁起物で、開店祝いの花がすぐに無くなるこ
とは、つまり多くのお客さんが来てくれこらか
ら商売が繁盛するとされているのだと
か・・・。嘘のようですが本当の話です。個人
の価値観が大事だからといって、東海地区風に
関東で開店祝いのスタンド花を勝手に拝借する
と・・・？「郷に入っては郷に従え。」です
ね。
では最後にシェイクスピアのマクベスより、
“Fair is foul, and foul is fair.”「きれいはきた
ない、きたないはきれい。」（魔女の言葉、第
1幕第1場）付け加えたいと思います。奇妙に思
えるこのことば、まるで正反対のことが同じだ
し、心にゆとりを持って相手の立場になったつ
もりで考え直すと、今以上にスムーズにコミュ
ニケーションがとれるのではないでしょうか。
The fall term has just begun and we are very glad to
see you being a bit taller during the break and coming back to school. New students, welcome to CIS.
We hope you are getting along.
We heard many stories from many CIS families that
enjoyed their summer all different locations in and
out of Japan. That must be very educational opportunities for them to meet people there, learn different
values there.
A poem by Misuzu Kaneko, “Everyone’s different,
and that makes them wonderful.” Is my favorite
phrase. So many men, so many minds, so many
brothers and sisters, so many different characters
and personalities and that’s why we love them.
Speaking about that, then what about “When in
Rome, do as the Romans do.” We are all different
but learn the local values, follow their lifestyle is one
sophisticated way of getting along with so many different people. I give you my experience and it sounds
strange to people in Kanto but in Nagoya and Gifu
region they can take away fresh flowers that are
given and displayed at brand new opened shops.
Residents around the area or even people who hear
about the shop opening they make all the way down
to the fresh flowers. The shop owners and related
business agents consider it as a sign of prosperity
when so many people “stealing” the flowers. Well,
strange but true. Then if they “steal” the flower from
shops being opening in Tokyo, most of you would go
like “!?!?!?!?” That’s what the proverb means.
Lastly, from Macbeth by Shakespeare(Act 1 Scene 1),
please let me add one more, “Fairs is foul, and foul is
fair. “ It may sound strange but I believe it means that
things natural to me may not be natural to others.
My value is of course important but it doesn’t mean
we can neglect others. I believe that we all should be
calm down to remember “Fairs is foul, and foul is
fair” and try to see the problems from the other
side of view whenever we encounter conflicts and
that’s good for our better communication and relation.

Introducing New Columbia Faculty!!
Hello!--I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Jaime Goodfellow and I’m the new elementary teacher here
at Columbia. I’m teaching grade three.
I’m from Windsor, Ontario, Canada but I’ve been living in Japan off and on for about eight years now.
Most of that time has been in the Enoshima area. It’s a beautiful place!
My hobbies are Ceili and Salsa dancing so I’m hoping to make a Ceili dancing club next term in the elementary school. I hope we have a chance to meet sometime this term!

Hello ! Columbia International School parents and students. My name is Motohiro Tanaka. I was born in Asakusa in Tokyo, and lived there for 20 years. After graduating from a university in Japan, I studied abroad in Los
Angeles. Following my studies in America for 2 years, I
went to Hong Kong to work for Delia School of Canada. (Accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education in
Canada)
I gained a lot of experienced there, as I worked as a Japanese language teacher and was also a member of
the office staff. I’m very happy to have now started working at CIS with the great students, teachers and
staff. Let’s create a wonderful school life together.

印象を与えることができる。というのは私たち

は外部からの刺激に反応するよう要求されるか
らだ。しかし私たちに活動をさせ続けるそれら
の外部からの刺激の力には限界がある。それら
は麻薬に似ている。私たちはそれらに慣れてし
まい、それらを絶えずより多く必要とするよう
になる。ついにはそれらはほとんどあるいは全
く効果がなくなる。そうなると、もし私たち自
身に方策がないなら、私たちの知的、道徳的、
情緒的な成長は止まってしまう。そして成長を
止めたとき私たちは死に始める。こういうわけ
で、本当に精神を使って活発に読書することは
それ自体がよいことであるだけでなく、私たち
の精神を生かし続け成長させ続けるのにも役立
つのだ。
このエッセイを読み終えた後の感想をお聞か
せください。皆さんにはできるだけ多くの本
を読んでもらい、より健康になって頂きたいも
のです。
最後になりましたが、保護者、生徒の皆さん
には収穫のシーズンにふさわしく、文字通り
「実り多き秋」になることを御祈り申し上げま
す。
Wherever I look I see no cherry blossoms only a

The poem above is called “Tanka”. Tanka
(literally meaning “short poem”), belongs to the old
Japanese poetry called Waka. Tanka is a 31-syllable
poem formed by lines in the pattern of 5-7-5-7-7.
The season when the cosmoses are swaying in the
autumn breeze has come around. I do hope everyone is happy and in good health. The new students
who entered this past April must be used to school
life by now. We have now started an even more
fruitful term by welcoming some new students. I
really hope that all of you will enjoy your school life
by co-operating and helping each other.
Autumn is said to be a good season for study and
sports in Japan. I think autumn is the best season for
reading.
This is an essay which stresses the importance of
reading for keeping healthy and living a long life.
There is a strange fact about the human
mind, a fact that differentiates the mind sharply from
the body. The body is limited in ways that the mind
is not. One sign of this is that the body does not
continue indefinitely to grow in strength and develop
in skill and grace. By the time most people are thirty
years old, their bodies are as good as they will ever
be. In fact, many persons’ bodies have begun to de-

teriorate by that time. But there is no limit to the
amount of growth and development that the mind can
achieve. The mind does not stop growing at any particular age. Only when the brain itself loses its power,
through illness for example, does the mind lose its
power to increase in skill and understanding.
This is one of the most remarkable things
about human beings. It may actually be the major difference between humans and other animals, which do
not seem to grow mentally beyond a certain stage in
their development. But this great human advantage
carries with it a great danger. The mind can grow
weak, like the muscles, if it is not used. This process
of growing weak is called atrophy. Atrophy of the
mental muscles is the penalty that we pay for not
taking mental exercise. And this is a terrible penalty,
for there is evidence that atrophy of the mind is a
disease leading to death. There seems to be no other
explanation for the fact that so many busy people die
so soon after retirement. They were kept alive by the
demands of their work upon their minds. They were
kept alive artificially, as it were, by external forces. But
as soon as those demands cease, people with no ability to provide themselves with mental activity stop
thinking altogether and die.
Television, radio and all the sources of
amusement and information that surround us in our
daily lives are also artificial means of mental survival.
They can give us the impression that our minds are
active, because we are required to react to stimuli
from outside. But the power of those external stimuli
to keep us going is limited. They are like drugs. We
grow used to them, and we continuously need more
and more of them. Eventually, they have little or no
effect. Then, if we lack resources within ourselves, we
cease to grow intellectually, morally, and emotionally.
And when we cease to grow, we begin to die. Reading
actively, really using the mind, is thus not only a good
thing in itself. It also serves to keep our minds alive
and growing.
Let me hear what you
think of this essay
after you read through
it. I’d like you to read
as much as possible
and become more
healthy.
And last but not least,

EARCOS and WASC!!
As the summer has drawn to a
close, even though the heat does
not want to leave us quite yet, I am
looking forward to the fall and
attending the EARCOS
Administrator’s Conference in
Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, with our
Principal Mr. McCliggott. Last year
I attended the teacher’s conference
at the same location and left there
with a lot of knowledge and great
teaching ideas which I have used in
my classroom and have shared
with other teachers. The EARCOS conference is
world-class with many top educators providing
seminars and workshops to hundreds of other
educators in a well-organized event surrounded by
pristine rainforest covered hills, ocean and islands.
This will be my first administrator’s conference and
will share the learning experience with Mr.
McCliggott who has attended before. I am excited to
learn more to help me with the many responsibilities
and duties I have as Head Teacher at Columbia
including curriculum design, teacher appraisal and
professional development. This will be an especially
busy fall and winter for me; with the help of staff and
teachers I must write a major report for WASC and
prepare for their inspection visit sometime next
spring. EARCOS will help with this preparation and
the school will continue to grow and improve, and be
ready to impress our WASC visitors. I will also
participate in this conference with Mr. McCliggott
who has a lot of experience attending these events
and also as our Principal, so I am looking forward to
being mentored and guided by him on our trip and in
the coming years. I hope to have some pictures for
the next newsletter of my professional learning
experience. Our trip to EARCOS is made possible by
the generous professional development budget at CIS
which is also being taken advantage by several
teachers and Mr. McCliggott who are taking their
Ontario ESL Part 1 qualification this fall. So, thank you
Columbia and all our hard-working teachers and staff
because afterall...We Are Student Centered: WASC.

まだ蒸し暑い日が続いており
すが、徐々に夏から秋に移り変
わってきています。今学期私は
マレーシアのコタキナバルで開
催されるEARCOS会議にマクリ
ゴット校長と参加致します。昨
年の会議で学んだ多くの学識と
素晴らしい授業方法は、先生方
と共有し日々の授業に取り入れ
ています。
手付かずの熱帯雨林で覆われ
た丘や海、島に囲まれた場所で
開催されるEARCOS会議には、
世界中から多くの教育者がセミ
ナー、ワークショップのために集まります。私
にとって初めての管理者向け会議ですが、その
経験をマクリゴット校長と共有してきたいと思
います。主任教師としてコロンビアでカリキュ
ラム、教員評価、研修などを任されております
が、この国際会議で多くのことを学べることに
わくわくしております。
この秋・冬は、スタッフ、先生のサポート、
WASC報告、来春の査察の準備等で忙しくなるで
しょう。EARCOSでの経験がコロンビアの成長、
発展に繋がり、WASC査察官に良い印象を与える
ことができると信じております。このようなイ
ベントに何度も参加しているマクリゴット校長
と会議に参加いたしますが、この旅行中そして
今後ともマクリゴット氏から色々とご指導頂き
たいと思っております。次回のニュースレター
に私が習得したことを掲載できればと思いま
す。
EARCOS会議への参加が可能であるのは、コロ
ンビアから教師研修の充実のための強いサポー
トがあるお蔭です。また他のコロンビアの教師
達もさまざまな補助を受けながら研修をこな
し、オンタリオESL パート１を今秋履修してお
ります。コロンビアと全ての教職員に心より感
謝しております。

The Motohashi Summer Adventure!!
This is the first occasion to be asked to write about our family summer adventures. It is an unusual
year for such a request because this is one of the first years that we spent most of the summer in Japan. And
what a summer to be here with such high temperatures!
Fortunately, the two escapes that we did make were to cooler climates and in opposite directions to
the other! A couple of weeks after school ended for summer vacation Toshi had an opportunity for a short
break so he took Kazuya & Kaito to Hokkaido for a quick 3-day vacation. The boys were very happy to escape
the heat and Ellen used the few days of peace and quiet to get some very important work done. The 3-days
Toshi and the boys spent in Sapporo were full of activity as they visited an outdoor sculpture garden, crafted
clay art, and rented a car for a drive out of town to visit a huge swimming pool and onsen. On the last day of
the trip they visited the opening day of the Sapporo Jazz Festival and took in the improvised sounds of jazz out
in the open of the Sapporo Odori-koen.
Our Organization
August quickly followed behind July and brought our departure date for New Zealand. Kaito’s best
friend, and our good friends from The States moved to Auckland on the North Island and we were very excited to spend our holiday exploring the beauty of New Zealand and visiting
with them in their new home. We had a fun-filled holiday of adventure
and touring. We rented a car for the 2 weeks we were there and took
several day trips outside of Auckland and spent a week traveling. When in
Auckland we especially enjoyed our day out at the Coromandel Peninsula
and two secret beaches our friends recommended we visit.
We bid farewell to our friends for a week of touring around the
area south of Auckland. We first visited the famed Ruakuri and Glowworm caves of Waitomo. The region
around the Waitomo caves is famous for its extensive cave system running under the verdant hillsides and
farmlands of this spectacular region. We spent 1.5 hrs walking underground marveling at the mystical formations, large open caverns and the star-like filled glowworms that speckled luminescent across the ceilings of
several sections of the cave. We continued on our travels to the geo-thermal region around Rotorua and enjoyed a long soak in the hot baths of the famous Polynesian Spa as we watched the sunset over Lake Rotorua.
The next day we headed south to the Wai O Tapu Geothermal Park. This is a region that is bubbling and boiling everywhere you look. We had a wonderfully sunny day to explore the park and hike for most of the afternoon among the steaming fumaroles and colorful pools of sulfuric springs. The next morning on our way to
Mt. Tongariro National Park we returned to Wai O Tapu to watch the
Lady Knox Geyser blow her top precisely at 10:15 am! Legend has it
that in the 1920’s prisoners found the geyser while doing hard labor and
decided to wash their clothes in her steamy natural washing machine.
They poured in some detergent they brought with them on a subsequent visit, put their clothes in and……There She Blows! To this day
the park rangers continue to pour some natural clothing detergent
down her spout and wait for her to blow her top!
One of the highlights of our trip was skiing at Whakapapa Ski Village located in Mt. Tongariro National Park. We arrived under ominous clouds at the iconic Bayview Chateau, a 1920’s hotel that sits nestled up
against Mt. Ruapehu and just 15 minutes from the ski ground. We couldn’t see any of the
mountains views the day we arrived and the next morning up to the mountain brought more dark clouds and
heavy snow! By the time we hit the slopes we had almost given up hope, when the sun worked its magic dispersing the clouds leaving blue skies where before there were only grey and dark clouds. Little by little we
were greeted with spectacular mountain views everywhere we looked. The next morning we returned to
Auckland and celebrated Kazu’s 14th birthday with a day out at Tree Adventures, an amazing obstacle course up
in the trees! It was truly an adventure and not for the faint of heart or scared of heights. Our last few days in
New Zealand found us north of Auckland on the historic Northland Peninsula where we cruised around the
Bay of Islands and were greeted by a family of dolphins before reaching the tip of the peninsula at The Hole In
the Rock, a large rock mass that has a huge arch eroded on one side big enough for out boat to pass through!
Our last full day in New Zealand greeted us, again, with clear blue skies, which was very welcome weather
indeed as we had booked an afternoon of horse trekking.
And so our summer adventures came to end, but the casual warmth of the people, the tremendous
scenery, abounding adventures, delicious wine, and good company will remain in our memories forever……
and be waiting for us to enjoy on our next trip!

spections are underway, and mid term exams are only a couple weeks away.
A balanced school life leads to greater success. I hope all students will participate actively in class,
develop a regular homework routine and take advantage of the many program opportunities Columbia has to offer.
Remember the more you put into your school life the greater the reward you will receive.
Parents, please encourage your children to get involved in class and the many school programs and
activities. With all of us working together I am sure that we will make a positive impact on each and
every child.

新入生とそのご家族の皆様のコロンビアへのご入学を心よりお慶び申し上げます。この秋、コロンビアには
小学課程に１名、中学課程に５名、高校課程に３名の新入生が加わりました。また、教師陣にはグッドフェ
ロー先生を迎えました。グッドフェロー先生はオンタリオ州出身ですが、日本での滞在も長く、以前は日本
にある某インターナショナルスクールで教鞭をとっておりました。コロンビアでは小学３年生を担任しま
す。また、サポートスタッフには田中基裕さんが加わりました。田中さんは、香港にあるコロンビアの姉妹
校のデリア・インターナショナルスクールで３年間仕事をされていました。
全ての皆様が素晴らしい夏休みを過ごされ、新たな学期を心から楽しみにされていることとと思います。
サポートスタッフと私は、この夏のほとんどを学校で過ごし、サマースクール教師のサポートやスクールメ
ンテナンス、次学期に向けた準備などを致しておりました。
水曜日のクラブや放課後のクラブ活動も始まり、今学期は今後、小学課程の運動会、ハロウィン、クリスマ
ス・フィエスタの準備、ＷＡＳＣとオンタリオ州の査察準備を予定しております。そして中間テストはあと
数週間先と迫っております。
バランスのとれた学校生活は、よりよい達成感を皆さんにもたらしてくれるはずです。
全生徒の皆さんがクラスに積極的に参加し、規則正しい勉強習慣を身につけ、コロンビアが提供する多数の
プログラムを有効利用して頂きたいと思います。学校生活に自分自身を投入すればするほど、より大きな報
酬が還ってくることを心に留めて生活してください。
保護者の皆様、クラスやその他多数のスクールプログラムや活動に参加するようお子様を励まし下さい。私
達がともに協力することで生徒一人ひとりにポジティブな影響を与えることができると確信しております。

The Morrison Summer Journey!!

The whole world seems to have been as hot as an oven this summer. While this is a bit of an
exaggeration, it is not too much of one! However, the heat didn’t stop people from having fun
and interesting adventures this summer.
We’ve enjoyed hearing many people tell us about their summer holidays. They went to many
different places and had a variety of experiences – but the thing in common is that everyone
we spoke to seemed to have approached their adventures with a positive attitude and an open
mind. When things didn’t go according to plan, they didn’t worry or get upset. Instead, they
found something good in the experience anyway – something they wouldn’t have seen, done
or thought.
We’d like to share some of our summer adventures with you! We are amazed at how much
we saw and did in two months! It already seems so long ago…

Here’s a list of some of the places we went: Ottawa, Kamakura, Matsumoto, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Beijing
The first few days in Ottawa were filled with visiting our large family. Eric’s mom and dad, Natalia and Allan, both grew up in the Ottawa area and most of their family still lives there. Natalia’s parents live on a farm with lots of miniature horses just outside of Ottawa. Allan’s mom
lives right in the city of Ottawa.
While Eric’s dad spent most of his time in Ottawa at school finishing his principal’s qualifications, Eric and his mom had fun visiting people and were able to help out by doing gardening,
housework and preparing meals and desserts for the freezer.
Eric’s friend Taylor came down from Sioux Lookout to visit him for 1 week. We took him to
the huge new War Museum (very interesting), the Aviation Museum because Taylor wants to
be a pilot, the Hubble IMAX (awesome – we had no idea stars were “born” in nurseries!), the
new water park (totally cool), Go-Karting, (amazing!), a cottage where we swam in the lake/
went fishing/went in a canoe and paddle boat (lots of fun), saw Parliament Hill and went shopping. One neighbour has a pool so they invited us over to swim whenever we wanted!
Soon after Taylor left, our wonderful friends, the Osmonds, came to visit. They have two boys
named Jesse and Adam. Jesse is in grade 8 and Adam is in grade 10. We had fun checking out
movies, the farm and downtown Ottawa with them before we all headed back to Japan together!
One of the first things we did in Japan was to get up very early one morning to go down to
Ryogoku with Taki Chigira and her son Keisuke. Taki had very thoughtfully suggested the idea
of doing sumo exercises with the trainees. The famous wrestlers Musashimaru and Konishiki
were there, too! Wow! Allan and Natalia remember watching them on TV almost 20 years
ago! After the exercises, we were invited to go watch the wrestlers training at a stable. It was
incredible! What an experience - we will never forget being so close to the wrestlers. Taki
then brought us to a beautiful park with lots of carp and turtles which the boys had fun feeding.
The next day, we went to a baseball game with Kazu and Kaito Motohashi and their parents
Ellen and Toshi. It was the Giants vs the Tigers. What a crowd! It was a great game with lots
of audience participation. One man sitting near us taught Jesse some of the chants!
In Japan, we toured our friends all around Tokyo, Kamakura, Matsumoto, Kyoto, Nara, HiroCO LUMBIA

shima and Miyajima. They loved it all but they especially enjoyed the morning with Taki, Keisuke and the sumo
wrestlers; the ball game with the Motohashis; a picnic in the park with the Hagertys; a festival we happened to be
there for in Matsumoto; the Peace Park in Hiroshima; the Golden Temple and Inari Jinja in Kyoto; the deer in Nara;
the Big Buddha in Kamakura; and Nakamise Dori in Asakusa. Their favourite foods were gyoza, kappa maki and yaki
niku.
Beijing was amazing! The Great Wall was a highlight – the thought of how long it took to build is awe-inspiring. We
all enjoyed the gondola ride up to the Wall and hiking along the Wall. The Forbidden City was beautiful. It was
huge, well maintained and had lots of visitors. There was a class on a school trip from an English school in China.
They spoke with us and took photos. That was fun!
The Temple of Heaven was a gorgeous building with a huge garden surrounding it. People played various card and
board games in the gardens. There was one man playing hide and seek with his little granddaughter. She was having
so much fun! Shopping was an interesting experience. The salespeople are sort of pushy and you usually have to
barter. If you don’t, you may pay 6 to 10 times more than it’s worth! The 3 boys enjoyed talking to Daniel the concierge at the hotel in Beijing. He was a cool guy. He was informative, friendly, helpful and just a nice guy.
When we originally left for Canada, Eric brought his homework. He fully intended to read the whole Bourne Ultimatum novel, write a book review of it and complete his math worksheets. However, most of this was left until the
last week of holiday since he was too busy learning about people, places and travelling. Now, after all that excitement and moving around, it is time to settle down and study!
We made a couple of photo books of our summer holiday. We will be able to look at it for many years and remem今年は本当に暑い夏でした。地球を丸ごとオーブンに放り込まれたんじゃないかと思ったくらいです。
（決して大げさではありません！）しかし、こんな暑さで音をあげるようなモリソン一家ではありませ
ん。むしろ、地球の気温に比例して、私達の冒険熱はどんどん膨らんでいったのです。
今年の夏は、私の友人達にとっても、とても良い夏休みとなった様です。自分の夏休みがいかに素晴らし
かったか、皆得意になって話してくれたのですが、それにしても、友人達の、自分の人生を前向きに生き
ようとする姿勢や、困難な状況を乗り越えていく楽観的な考え方には、いつも感心させられます。そんな
彼らにとっては、旅行中のちょっとしたハプニングも、「とても新鮮な経験」、「目の保養」になってし
まうのです。
さて、そんな素晴らしい友人の話はさておき、モリソン一家の夏休みの想い出を、この場をお借りして少
しご紹介したいと思います。これを書きながらも、つい追憶にひたってしまうほど、本当に素晴らしい夏
休みでした。それは、私達が訪れた場所のリストをご覧頂くだけで、十分に感じて頂けるかと思います。
●オタワ, 鎌倉, 松本, 京都, 奈良, 広島, 宮島, 北京
オタワで過ごした最初の数日は、正にモリソン・ファミリー大集合の日でした。モリソンパパ（アラン）
とモリソンママ（ナタリア）の生まれ故郷であるオタワには、今でも沢山のモリソンファミリーが住んで
います。ナタリアの両親は、オンタリオ郊外で農場を営んでいて、敷地内にはたくさんのミニチュアホー
スが駆け回っています。アランのお母さんも、オタワの町で元気に暮しています。
実は、モリソンパパには校長先生になるという夢があって、オンタリオに滞在中も一所懸命に勉強に励ん
でいたのですが、そんなパパにはお構いなく、モリソンママと彼女の最愛の息子、エリックは、あっちに
いっては人に会い、こっちにいってはお庭のお手入れやお料理をしたり、（たまに作り過ぎて、冷凍庫の
肥やしになっていましたが…）、本当に楽しい日々を過ごしました。
スー・ルックアウトに住んでいるテイラーが、エリックに会う為に１週間ほど遊びに来ました。その間、

実に様々な場所に行きました。最近建てられた大規模な戦争記念館はとても興味深かったです。パイロット
になるという夢を持つテイラーを連れて、航空博物館にも行きました。ハッブル・アイマッスク・シアター
では、星がどのようにして作られるのかを知り、とても驚きました。川やプール（プール付の豪邸に住むお
隣さんに大感謝！）に泳ぎに行ったり、釣り行ったり、カヌーを漕いだり、ゴーカートに乗ったり、アウト
ドアも大満喫しました。
テイラーが帰ってしまった後、今度はオズモンドさんが、息子のジェシーとアダムを連れて遊びに来てくれ
ました。オズモンドさんは私たちの友人で、ジェシーはグレード８、アダムはグレード１０です。オンタリ
オでは一緒に映画を見たり、オンタリオ市内に遊びにいったりして時を過ごしましたが、なんと、一緒に日
本に帰国することになったのです！
日本に帰国してからすぐ、チギラママのタキさんと、お子さんのケイスケくんと一緒に両国国技館に行きま
した。タキさんの情報によると、相撲部屋のお弟子さんたちと一緒に、相撲の稽古が受けられるというので
す。それだけでも驚きですが、それよりも更なる驚きが私たちを待ち受けていたのです。何と、あの有名な
小錦と武蔵丸に会えたのです！モリソンパパとモリソンママが初めて2人をTVで見たのは今から２０年前のこ
とですが、まさか実際にお会いできるとは夢にも思いませんでした。稽古を体験した後は、しばらくの間、
お相撲さん達の稽古の様子を見学しました。両国国技館の後は、タキさんがとてもきれいな公園に連れて
行ってくれました。公園にはたくさんの鯉と亀がいて、子供たちはエサやりに夢中でした。たくさんのお相
撲さんに囲まれ、小錦と武蔵丸の2人に出会えたことは、私たちの一生の思い出です。
次の日は、モトハシパパのトシさんと、モトハシママのエレンさん、そしてお子さんのカズとカイトと一緒
に、巨人対タイガースの野球の試合を見に行きました。それにしても野球ファンの多いこと！ジェシーは、
ファンの男性に応援歌や振り付けを教えてもらっていました。試合はとても盛り上がり、観客達もとても楽
しんでいました。
二人の客人を連れて、日本の観光名所巡りもしました。チギラファミリーと一緒に行った両国国技館や、モ
トハシファミリーと一緒に見た巨人vs阪神戦はもちろん、その他たくさんの楽しい想い出を一緒に作ること
ができました。中でも、ハガティーファミリーと一緒に行ったピクニック、松本市で偶然行われていたお祭
り、広島の平和記念公園、京都の金閣寺や稲荷神社、奈良の鹿、鎌倉の大仏、そして浅草の仲見世通りが、
一番心に残ったようです。美味しい食べ物もたくさん食べましたが、２人のお気に入りは、餃子、かっぱ巻
き、そして焼肉でした。
北京で見た万里の長城（The Great Wall）は、正に絶景でした。完成までに費やされた年月について考えを巡
らせていると、とても感慨深い気持ちになりました。長城に登る為に利用したゴンドラからの眺めはさるこ
とながら、長城の上から一望した故宮（The Forbidden City）の美しさ、壮大さは筆舌に尽くしがたいほどで
した。大勢の観光客の中には、地元の英会話スクール生の一団もいて、一緒に写真を撮ることも出来まし
た。本当に楽しかったです。
中国では天檀（The Temple of Heaven）にも足を運びました。天檀は、壮大な庭に囲まれた荘厳な史跡です。
庭には大勢の人たちが集まり、カードゲームやボードゲームに興じていました。かくれんぼをして遊んでい
る親子がいたのですが、そのお嬢さんの笑顔は、私達をとても楽しい気分にしてくれました。中国での買い
物も、とてもよい経験になりました。お店の人たちは皆とても商売熱心で、中にはとても押しの強い人がい
て閉口しました。お店の人は必死でしたが、油断していると、本来払うべき値段の６から１０倍もの値段を
ふっかけられてしまうので、私たちも必死です。ジェシー、アダム、そしてエリックの３人は、北京で新し
い友達を作ることもできました。北京ホテルで私たちのコンシェルジュを担当してくれたダニエルです。ダ
ニエルはとてもクールで親しみやすく、北京のことなら何でも知っていて、私たちに本当に良くしてくれま
した。
さて、とても楽しかった夏の思い出話もこれまでです。特にエリックにとっては。カナダに帰る前、Bourne
Ultimatumの小説を読破し、読書感想文を仕上げ、マスのドリルも全て終らせる予定で、全てカバンに詰めて
きたのですが、友達と遊んだり、いろんな場所に出かけたりしていて、最後の週になって初めて、宿題がほ
とんど手付かずになっていることに気付いたのです！楽しい時間の後には、気持ちを入れかえて勉強に集中
しなければならない時間が必ず来るということを、身をもって知ったエリックの夏でした。
今年の夏の思い出を、少しでも多く記憶に留めておける様に、アルバムを数冊作ることにしました。とは言
え、大切なのは記憶ではなく、家族や友達と一緒に過ごした時間と、新しい友と出会った時の感動です。地
球上には、心を通わせられる友達がまだまだたくさんいるということを考える時、世界は広い様で狭く、そ
して、より身近なものであることに気づかされます。
