I’ve given this the title, ‘How to pray when you fear for your
children.’
聖書の詩篇 12 篇を開いてください。今日の説教のタイトルは、

This is a generational Psalm:
• v7 You will guard us from this generation forever.
• We read about the ‘children of man’ in v1 and in v8.

The focus of this prayer is a concern over what the future holds
for our children and our grandchildren.

Notice how the Psalm begins and ends:
• v1 Save O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful
have vanished from among the children of men.
• The godly have gone, the faithful have vanished!
• We want our children to be surrounded by godly
examples, and models of faithfulness but, David says,
‘That’s hard to find today!’

Then look at the end of the Psalm
• v8 On every side the wicked prowl,
as vileness is exalted among the children of men.

David was noticing a significant change. Vileness is exalted.
• A virtue is made of vice.
• Evil is called good and good is called evil.
• Everything seems upside down and, what hope is there for
our children when this is the world in which they are
growing up.

That’s the burden that gave birth to this Psalm and it will obvious
to you that this Psalm speaks powerfully to our situation today.

God has given us a prayer in the Bible for

The message today is in two parts
• First an analysis of the assault that our children are facing.
• Second, a strategy for prayer and for action.

Analysis of the assault our children are facing
The god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the
gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God (2
Cor 4:4).

Notice what we are being told here:
• There is a particular work of Satan, [the god of this world]
to bring blindness to human minds.
• The good news of the glory of Christ is like a bright light.
• Jesus says ‘I am the light of the world,’ and Satan has to
pull every trick in the book to keep people from seeing
His glory.

How does he do this?
Jesus says that “Satan is a liar and the father of lies,” (Jn 8:44).
• Lies are his stock in trade for blinding minds of each
generation to the glory of Christ.
• The lies take different forms in each generation
• But the overarching strategies are essentially the same.

Psalm 12 points to 3 brands of deception, all of which Satan uses
to keep people from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of
Christ.
• The three brands are Vanity, Flattery and Blasphemy

Three Brands of Deception
1. Vanity
Everyone utters lies [emptiness] to his neighbor (v2)

today.

There’s great deal of conversation about the whole business of
spying, right now:
• The NSA listening to phone calls with a view to
enhancing security etc.
• I read I piece in which a journalist said that the person she
felt sorry for is the poor guy at the NSA who has to sift
through endless emails, voicemails tweets, texts and face
book posts
• the vast majority of which are of absolutely no
consequence whatsoever!
She said, I imagine this guy snoozing off as he listens to my
weekly phone call to my elderly mother. How was your week? I
went to the grocery story today? Really. That was nice. What
else? Oh yes, cousin Maybole came to visit. How is she? Not
so good, she has been to the doctor... etc

• Can you see that This Psalm describes the world in which
you are growing up.
• Watch this for the next week. The tweets, the texts, the
posts; what are they about? How much of it will matter in
a month let alone in 20 or 50 years time.

You are growing up in a world of trivia where everyone utters
emptiness to his neighbor.
• It’s a world dominated by the next game or by the latest
reality show or the most shocking sound-bite.

The effect of all this is that serious conversation feels really odd.
• Satan’s ‘vanity brand’ has been so successful that
thousands of people will go through high school, college,
career and retirement, without ever seriously asking
• Who am I? Why am I here? What
is life for? And what lies beyond?

Satan is in the business of blinding the minds of people so that
they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ
• And vanity is one of his primary strategies for doing it.

When I was high school, there were two books about the future
that were required reading for English literature.
• One was Aldous Huxley’s Brave new world

The last 30 years have shown that for most of the world, Orwell

• Your mind and your heart have an “almost infinite
capacity for distraction (Huxley)
• He wants to use that to keep you from seeing the light of
the gospel of the glory of Christ.

2. Flattery
With flattering lips and a double heart they speak. (v2)
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, (v3).

Flattery is the spoken language of in a culture where people give
themselves to vanity.

Flattery is saying only what other people want to hear,
And hearing only what you want other people to say.
Flattery is Satan’s second brand of deception.
• If you only hear what you want other people to say,
• it will keep you from seeing the light of the Gospel of
Jesus Christ.

This desire for flattery runs deep. Isaiah describes God’s people
as

Children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord,

Speak to us smooth things…
Let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel. (Isa

How can you believe, when you receive glory from one
another and do not seek the glory that comes from the
only God? (Jn 5:44)

Here is a second brand of deception:
• You build up a little world in which you seek out people
who say what you want to hear.
• You become more and more preoccupied with yourself.
• Your eyes grow dim, and the more you are affirmed by
others the less you see of Christ.

This third brand of lying shows itself in defiance.
• The person who has bought this third brand of deception
clenches his or her fist, and says ‘its my life.’
• I am the captain of this ship. No-one rules this life but
me!
• I will find my own way, I will be my own Lord my own
Savior, my own master, my own guide.
The word to describe that is blasphemy:

1. The act of insulting or showing contempt… for God
2. The act of claiming the attributes of deity.3
This brand of deception goes back to the Garden of Eden when
Satan said to Eve, ‘You shall be as God.’
• Vanity, Flattery, Blasphemy,
• Satan is always ringing the changes on these three themes.
He even tried them out on the Son of God.

Vanity: Use your power to bring immediate comfort to
yourself: Turn these stones into bread:
•
Flattery: Use your power to make a great impression on
other people: Throw yourself from the pinnacle of the
temple and float to the ground in safety. People will love
you for that.
•
Blasphemy: You can have the whole world in return for
one thing: Bow down and worship me.
Then think about Jesus Christ on the cross: See how He is
surrounded by vanity, flattery and lies

Vanity: The Son of God is bearing the sins of the world
and below a few feet away, men are roiling dice and
gambling for his clothes.

Flattery: Pilate found no fault in Him. But he handed
Jesus over because he wanted to satisfy the crowd (Mk

Blasphemy: The Son of God is on the cross because in
their hearts the people are saying, “We will not have this
man to reign over us,” (Lk 19:14)
But He rises from the dead. He is able to set people free from the
prisons of deception.
An analysis of the assault our children are facing:
A strategy for prayer and for action.
What hope is there for our children and grandchildren growing up
in this world, where they are swimming in this sea of vanity, and
flattery and blasphemy?
• When you lay it out, you can see why David is praying,
and why we need to do the same.

1. God Listens
We need to pray for our children. We need to do this in the
family, we need to do this as a church.
• When we do, we should lay out before the Lord, the
pressure that they face.
• Psalm 12 is a model for us.

Ask some friends to commit to praying for your children

connect with some younger people and pray for them.

2. God Speaks
The words of the Lord are pure words,like silver refined in
a furnace on the ground, purified seven times, (v6).

God’s Word is pure. He says things that you may not want to
hear.
• His Word will bring conviction to your soul; an awareness
of your own need, but God’
• Word is pure and it will always do you good.

answer.
• Psalms is a book of prayers, but in this Psalm God speaks.
• He answers while David is still praying!
‘I will now arise,’ says the Lord;
I will place him in the safety for which he longs (v5).
Here’s your strategy for prayer and action:
• You can trust God to speak.
• You can ask God to save.
• That’s how you pray when you fear for your children.
And those He saves, He keeps:
You will guard us from this generation forever, (v7).
God gave to Karen and I the gift of two sons. We are so grateful
that they love Christ and have married women who love Christ
too.
• Now we have two grand-daughters, one on each side of
the family
• We are very aware as that they are growing up in a world
very different from the one we knew in our childhood.
They are growing up in a culture where there is no longer a
Christian consensus.

My prayer you, is that today you will bow before Him as your
Lord and master and, taking Him at His word, which is what faith

• Jesus is the way for me
• Jesus be the life for me!
