1．目的
1. 目的
ニューロインフォマティクスの進展により、ニューロインフォマティクスのコンテンツ
は様々なプラットフォームに蓄積されていくと考えられ、それらコンテンツを総合して理
解することで、脳科学が進展すると期待されている。しかし、それらのコンテンツには様々
な権利が付随しているため、コンテンツを統合的に利用することにはまだ制限が掛けられ
ている。特に、複数のプラットフォーム間にまたがる連携は非常に困難となる。そこで、
プラットフォームをまたがるコンテンツの利用形態として、直接のコンテンツではないメ
タデータを利用したプラットフォーム間の連携が期待される。
メタデータの流通に関する標準規格を利用したシステムの構築、運用が行われつつある。
それらのシステムの状況を調査し、ニューロインフォマティクスのプラットフォーム上で
メタデータ流通によって実現される可能性を調査した。

本調査では、メタデータ流通の標準規格であるOAI-PMH（Open Archives Initiative
Protocol for Metadata Harvesting）1を利用したシステムの状況を調査し、ニューロインフ
ォマティクス分野におけるメタデータ流通による共有化の推進を図るシステムを検討した。
（１）メタデータ流通を活用するシステムの調査
メタデータ流通の標準規格として、OAI-PMH がある。この規格を利用したシステムは、
コンテンツとそのメタデータを保有するシステム（リポジトリ）と、メタデータを収集し
てエンドユーザに付加価値を付けたサービスを提供するシステム（ハーベスタ）に分類さ
れる。

本調査では、主に OAI-PMH を利用して、既に実用化、あるいは開発中のメタデータ流
通システムを調査した。
（２）ニューロインフォマティクスのコンテンツにおけるメタデータ流通の可能性
（１）の調査に基づき、ニューロインフォマティクスのコンテンツにおけるメタデータ
流通の可能性を検討した。検討に際しては、ニューロサイエンス分野でのデータ流通に関
する課題、取り組みを調査し、ニューロインフォマティクスのコンテンツにおけるメタデ
ータ流通の可能を整理した。

本章では、メタデータ交換技術の一つである OAI-PMH を採用したシステムを調査し、
どのような有用性があるかについて整理する。最初に OAI-PMH 技術について簡単に整理
した後、図書館関係のメタデータ流通への取り組みとして、NII メタデータ・データベース
共同構築事業と国立国会図書館デジタルアーカイブポータルを取り上げる。また、科学技
術データに関する取り組みとして、International Virtual Observatory Alliance の取り組
みを紹介する。
3.1 OAI-PMH 技術
Open Archives Initiative（以下、OAI）2は、さまざまな電子コンテンツの効果的配信を
促すために、電子コンテンツを扱うシステムの相互運用性に関する標準を策定し，それを
普及させることを使命とした団体である。OAI-PMHは、このOAIが定めたメタデータ交換
のためのプロトコル標準であり、2000 年 2 月にVer.1.0、2002 年 6 月にVer.2.0 が公開され
ている。
OAI-PMH は、分散管理されているデータのメタ情報のみを提供・収集するためのもので
あり、次の図のように電子コンテンツを保有しているデータプロバイダとそれを収集する
サービスプロバイダの間のプロトコルである。

データプロバイダは電子コンテンツを保有する組織であり、サービスプロバイダはエン
ドユーザに各種のサービスを提供する組織である。そして、サービスプロバイダはサービ
スを提供する為に、データプロバイダからメタデータの提供を受けるという枠組みが考え
られている。また、リポジトリは OAI-PMH の要求，リクエストに対して応答するデータ
プロバイダが管理するサーバを指し、ハーベスタは OAI-PMH の要求を発行するサービス
プロバイダのシステムである。通信は、常にハーベスタからリポジトリに http リクエスト
を送信し、リポジトリから XML 形式のデータをレスポンスする形で行われる。
OAI-PMHでは、メタデータを表現する形式として、どのようなXML形式を採用するか
は定めていない。各リポジトリが格納している電子コンテンツに相応しい形式を用意（複
数可能）し、ハーベスタがその中から形式を選択して、通信を行う。但し、形式が完全に
自由では相互運用性に大きな問題が生じるため、Dublin Core 3の形式はリポジトリが用意
する必須の形式となっている。

OAI-PMH のプロトコルは、あくまでメタデータの収集を目的とした非常にシンプルなも
のである。引数で指定する条件も、リポジトリ側で提供されるコンテンツのグループ範囲
の指定や、前回収集後の更新分の範囲指定といった目的であり、ハーベスタがリポジトリ
の中から特定のメタデータを選択することを目的としていない。
従って、OAI-PMH を利用したサービスプロバイダのシステムは、次のような特徴を持つ
ことになる。
○サービスに提供されるデータは必ずしも最新ではない。
データの収集とユーザの検索は非同期であるため、リポジトリの最新情報を反映して
いない。
○全てのリポジトリが持つメタデータに共通した検索が可能。
検索機能はサービスプロバイダが独自に作成しなければならす、サービスプロバイダ
の負担は大きいが、各リポジトリは同じ検索機能をもつ必要がない。
○ネットワークやリポジトリへの負荷が少ない。
リポジトリとの通信は非同期で行うため、適切にスケジューリングすることで、ネッ
トワークやリポジトリへの負荷の集中を避けることができる。
3.2 NII メタデータ・データベース共同構築事業
国立情報学研究所(National Information Institute。以下NII)では、2002 年度より「メ
タデータ・データベース共同構築事業」4を行っている。この事業は、主として国内の大学・
研究機関等がインターネット上において発信している学術情報資源のメタデータをデータ
ベース化することにより、学術情報の円滑な流通を図り，各大学の研究成果を広く世界に
発信することを支援するものである。
この事業では、各大学など参加機関が自らの管理するサーバに登録された情報のメタデ
ータを、NIIのメタデータ・データベースに入力し、NII学術コンテンツポータル“GeNii”
5で検索することを可能にするものである。登録されるメタデータの信頼性や鮮度は登録機
関が管理を行うことになっている。この共同事業では次のような方針を採用している。

○さらに他機関の発信する学術情報も活用できるようにする
各機関が登録する情報としては次のようなものを対象としている。
– 研究成果，研究資源
– 研究者・研究室情報
– 教育情報
– 広報資料，図書館，デジタルミュージアム
– 参考情報
NII は、これらの情報を入力するオンラインシステムを提供しているが、それ以外に
OAI-PMH によるハーベストも用意されている。大学、研究機関で OAI-PMH に対応した
リポジトリを構築することで、メタデータを 2 重に登録する手間を避け、より効率的な運
用を目指している。また、大学、研究機関間でデータ交換を行うことで、他機関の持つデ
ータを有効に活用することも構想に含まれている。平成 18 年度において、OAI-PMH を利
用したデータ登録を行っている機関は、以下の通りである。

3.3 NDL デジタルアーカイブポータル
国立国会図書館(NDL:National Diet Library) 6は、国の各機関をはじめとする各種機関と
協力し、電子的情報資源や情報提供サービスをワンストップで利用できる総合的なポータ
ルサイトを構築することを計画している。

このポータルサイト 8は、平成 16 年度からプロトタイプシステムの構築が行われ、以下
のような情報の収集とワンストップサービスを目指している。
○国立国会図書館が保有するウェブアーカイブ、デジタルアーカイブ、レファレンス
情報、冊子体の資料の目録
○国や公共機関、学術研究分野などに加えて民間、個人が保有する情報
○主題や情報の特性、特定利用者層などに応じてきめ細かなサービスを提供する各専

門分野のサービスプロバイダやポータルサイトと連携
○機械的インターフェースによる情報を提供できるデータプロバイダとなる。
これらの目標を達成するため、データプロバイダが保有するデータベース内のコンテン
ツ並びにリクエストに応じて動的に提供されるコンテンツ（いわゆる深層ウェブにあるコ
ンテンツ）への直接アクセスが可能になるような機能を準備すると共に、より多くのデジ
タルアーカイブを統合的に利用できるようになるために必要な共通仕様実装や環境整備を
デジタルアーカイブ保有機関が行うように推進活動を行っている。
このポータルでは、データプロバイダとのデータ交換に必要な先進的かつ標準的な技術
として、プロトタイプシステムでは次の図のような技術を適用して、データ収集を行って
いる。

天文学では観測装置は限られた資源であり、また天文事象の観測データは物理化学の実
験とは異なり、1 回限りの観測である。このため、様々な観測装置で得られる観測データは
非常に貴重なデータであり、それをネットワークで共有化することが進んできている。し
かし、観測装置の進歩と共にその情報が複雑化、多様化され、それらの内容やデータフォ
ーマットは観測装置毎に異なっているため、研究者がそれらの共有情報を有効に活用する
ことが難しくなってきている。
この問題点を解決するために、様々な観測データからDigital Universeを構築し、それを”
観測”し、得られた情報を解析・処理できる” 抽象化された観測装置”を構築する計画が進ん
でいる。これが、”Virtual Telescope/Observatory”である。日本では、国立天文台データベ

ース推進室が中心となって、JVO(Japanese Virtual Observatory) 9を進めている。また、
各国で計画されているVirtual Observatoryを連携する標準方式の策定グループとして、
International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) 10が活動を行っている。
Virtual Observatory の実体は、分散データ Grid システムであり、この上に連携のため
のデータアクセス方式の統一、メタデータの管理・検索、解析処理との連携、ユーザ環境・
データの管理・保存などの機能を載せたシステムである。JVO では、次の図のような開発
方針が立てられている。

• Unified Attribute Names：UCD (Unified Contents Descriptions)。個別 DB で内容
は同じだが名称が異なるカラム名を統一的に扱う。

4. ニューロインフォマティクスのコンテンツにおけるメタデータ流通の可能性
脳科学分野では、1990 年代にHuman Brain Project 13が行われた米国で、その研究成果
が多数のデータベースの構築として公開されるようになってきた。このため、多数のデー
タベースをどのように活用するかという研究が、米国を中心に始まっている。
本章では、脳科学の分野でのメタデータ流通の重要性と、メタデータ流通に向けた米国
での取り組みを中心に取り上げる。
4.1 ニューロインフォマティクスにおけるメタ情報流通の重要性
脳科学研究における多くのデータベースは、研究者毎、研究機関毎にその研究成果を公
開する形で構築されてきている。このため、データベースは必ずしも相互運用性を備えて
おらず、共通的にメタ情報が整備されているわけでない。
Shankar Subramaniam 14は、様々な研究成果を繋ぎ合わせ、脳全体のデータベースを構
築する為には、解剖学的脳地図や様々な地図を用いて研究成果の位置を示して行くことが
必要であり、それらの研究成果の間を繋ぎ合わせることが必要であると述べている。また、
研究には階層性があり、それらを越えて統合することが重要である。そのレベルには、以
下の 3 種類があり、最終的にはIntegrationをめざし、「workbench the brain」を構築するこ
とが重要であろうと述べた。
・interlinking（リンクで繋ぐ方法）
・interoperability（Ontology を使い、query が共有できる。semantic な繋がり）
・integration（相互に tool が利用でき、time-space の関連、多次元的な繋がり）
共通的なメタ情報を整備する上で、出版社の役割を指摘する報告もある。N.T.Carnevale
等は、ニューロインフォマティクスの中心となるモデルデータベースの一つである
ModelDB 15を構築している。構築のために公表された論文から検証可能なモデル記述を抽
出している。しかし、現状では公開論文中にモデルが含まれるか否かが明確でなく、モデ
ルがテストできるかどうか確認するために必要な モデル内で明記されている生物学的特
性の詳細な記載も十分ではない。モデルデータの共有を推進するためには、モデルの公開、
必要なメタ情報の整備を公的研究助成機関や出版社のポリシーとして進めることが効果的
であると述べている 16。

タベース活用に関してよりよい情報を率先して提供することができ、科学者に対しデータ
共有へ向けて、もっと働きかけることができるだろうという点で一致した。その第一段階
とて、会議参加者はニューロサイエンスのジャーナル誌が、論文著者に対し研究に使用し
た資料とその手法の基本メタデータ（性別、年齢、研究動物の種類）を提出してもらうこ
とにより論文のより効果的な検索が可能になるであろうという点でも賛同した。この議論
を受け、ニューロサイエンス・ジャーナル誌とニューロデータベースが協力し合って運営
を行っていくかについて企画会議が行われ、SfN、ニューロサイエンス・ジャーナル出版社、
NIMH、INCF、NeuroCommons, 学術誌出版社協会（the Society for Scholarly Publishing）
の各機関からの中核的メンバーが参加した。そして、2007 年 6 月に"PubMed Plus: New
Directions in Publishing and Data Mining" リーダーシップ会議が企画され、この会議で以下
の議論を行う予定となっている 17。

誌間で可能かどうか
そして、予定された会議の報告に基づき、小規模単位の実証プロジェクトを行い、もしパ
イロットプロジェクトが成功したら、その成功例をもとに、利点を説明し、コンセンサス
を形成して集積したメタデータを用いて実験するようにニューロサイエンス・ジャーナル
誌に働きかける計画となっている。
4.2 Society for Neuroscience Neuroinformatics committee の取り組み
Society for Neuroscience(SfN)では、2005 年に Neuroinformatics committee(NIC)を設
けた。NIC の役割は以下のようであり、◎の項目が重点的な目標となっている。

そして、現在、中心的に取り組んでいるのは以下の開発である。
・データをどのように（どこに）登録するかについての著者向けガイドライン
・テキストやデータに関する検索を最適化する方法
・データベース化、データ共有を推進する新しいツール
SfN NIC では、上記のように”Data Sharing Guideline”のドラフトを議論、作成してい
る。そこでは、以下の項目が議論となっている。
・ Data sharing policy
・ Programming Interface
・ Vocabulary, Terminology, Ontology
・ Metadata, Metadata structure
・ Informational Model
「Vocabulary, Terminology, Ontology」、「Metadata, Metadata structure」の開発では、
BrainML 18の開発グループが大きな役割を果たしている。リソースには多様な種類があり、
時間－空間的、技術的な要素などがあるため、データベースのメタデータ記述は分野、技
術、ユーザ、timeといった視点で記述される複雑なものである。“BrainML”は神経科学で
使用するデータを交換するためのXML形式の標準フォーマットであり、各脳研究のコミュ
ニティが独自にデータ構造を拡張できるように設計されている。BrainMLのサイトでは、”
BrainML”の規格の他、SfNが開発した用語集やデータ構造と共に、”BrainML”の形でデー
タを格納したデータベースを公開している。BrainMLでは、データベースに登録する情報を、
Detectors（情報を特徴づけるデータモデル）、Selectors（コンテンツを明確に述べる用語。
query等で使用）、Data（データそのもの）と分けて考え、使うべき用語集を開発している。
用語は単一で用いるだけでなく、階層的に定義されて、文脈を含んだ用語として使うこと
ができる（例：AAA.BBB.CCC.word → “AAA” の ”BBB” の ”CCC” の ”word”）。
専門用語を階層別に並べ直すと、サブフィールド全体から研究成果を導くのに有益な一般
用語から緻密な用語を導き出すことができ、これは、ある特定なニューロサイエンス分野
では必要不可欠である。
一方、「Programming Interface」、「Informational Model」の開発として、

Information Framework（NIF）」19の開発が進められている。この研究は、NIHが推進してい
るBlue Print Project 20の一部でもある。この構想は、ニューロインフォマティクス解析ツー
ルと科学的探求の助力となる資源を充実して欲しいという神経科学界からの要望に端を発
し、既に開発の進んでいるHuman Brain Project等によるニューロインフォマティクス開発
を引き継いだ形で発足し、SfNのニューロサイエンス・データベース・ゲートウエイの構築
プロジェクトから直接派生している。このプロジェクトでは、SfN、SfN NIC、8 カ所のボ
ランティア協力者と提携して、１）総合的で、ダイナミックなアクセス可能なニューロサ
イエンス資源、２）資源とコンテンツを表現する幅の広い統合された専門用語、３）コン
セプトベースなクエリーを受付、支援するフレームワークの開発を行っている。これらの
フレームワークは、neurogateway.org 21で紹介されている。
現在進行中のフェーズ１では、以下の項目を実施中である。
• 神経科学情報（データベース、文献、遺伝子、解析ツール、試料）の調査とインベン
トリの試作
• 情報とコンテンツの特徴づけを適確に表現する専門用語の開発
• 専門用語ワークショップの主宰
• Web 上の神経科学データベースが持つスコープの分析とフレームワークの目標設定
と、手順を示した白書の作成
プロジェクトのフェーズ１では、フレームワーク作業チームが 365 の神経科学のWeb情
報源を特定し、neurogateway.orgにそのサイト目録を載せた。neurogateway.orgのサイト目
録には、記述的な専門用語を紹介し、detector用語に管理された情報源のスコープとフォー
カスを特定するボキャブラリーが豊富に備わっている。データ、知識、ツールや図表等（マ
テリアル）のある項目を特定するには、selector用語が必要となる。フレームワーク・プロ
ジェクトは、複数のプロジェクト（TextPresso 22, BrainML, NeuroNames 23）から selector 用
語を開発し、組み込んでいる。
フレームワークは現在アクセス可能なデータや知識しか取り込むことができない。共有
可能なデータの量は増加しているが、潜在的ニーズに対応するにはまだ足りず、フレーム
ワークは以下のような課題を抱えている。
•神経科学の知識を統合化するにはスケール全体および多くの神経科学のドメインから
のデータが、関連づけられリンクされている必要がある。
•神経科学資源とは、主にデータベース、ツール・リポジトリ、モデル・サイト、出版

物、マテリアルを指す。
•神経科学とその資源には様々なデータタイプと器官が存在する。
•記述的なメタデータは特色付けをし、分析しデータに関連性を持たせる必要がある。
•神経科学は、現在も進化を続けているバイオインフォマティックス資源および情報に
リンクされなければならない。
神経科学のそれぞれのドメインは、データ、実験、研究成果を表現するのに違う語義モデ
ルを使用している。それらは各ドメインのコンテンツを適切に表現する専門用語であるが、
フレームワークは多種多様な情報源からの研究成果が比較され拡張されることのできる交
差点であるため、そのようなバラバラな専門用語を統合や仲介によって、ドメイン間でリ
ンク可能にしなければならない。このために先の専門用語を整理する活動が行われている。
フレームワークの設計は学界の幅広い支援を結集し、オープン手法によって行われてい
る。アクセスは無料で一般に開放されており、開発の中身はオープンソースで自由にみる
ことができるようになるので、ＩＮＣＦの各国ノードや他のゲートウエイを援助すること
にもなる。
さらに、SfNのNeuroscience Database Gateway (NDG)を、NIFの相互運用性と用語検索
機能のプロトタイプ作成のテストベッドとして提供している 24。

NDG の相互運用性のテストには、次のようなフレームワークやプロトコルが使われてい
る。
ndg.disco: この実装がデータ統合を順次推進するプロトコルのテストベットとして利
用されている。
BrainML: この技術は、新しい規格 Brain-X を生み出し、データの相互運用性を高める
技術を生み出すきっかけとなる。
RDF/OWL: Resource Description Framework (RDF)/ Web Ontology Language(WOL)に
基づくデータ統合アプローチ。
また、NDG では次のようなプロトタイプが開発されている。
- Lexicon Enhanced Search: (LES) このプロトタイプは、統合されたデータベースがそ
れぞれの DB 独自の用語で検索できるようにする機能である。LES は各 DB サイ
トの情報が更新されたとき、いつでもその Web サイトからデータベース語彙を集
めることができる。対応するデータベースは、DB の語彙集を提供する手段を持っ
ていなければならない。
- Standard Lexicon Search (ELS)このプロトタイプは、 NDGデータベースに対して、
NIFの標準神経科学語彙を用いて検索することを可能にする。標準神経科学語彙は、
ローカルデータベースの語彙にBIRN-Bonfire 25, Query Integration Server - OS,
GO(Gene Ontology 26), UMLS-KS 27 等のオントロジーサーバを用いて変換できる。
- Ontologically Mediated Search (OMS) このプロトタイプでは、ローカルな語彙も標準
語彙もオントロジーを用いて、以下のような解釈によって拡張して利用すること
ができる：
・オントロジーは統合検索に許された仲介プロクシによってマップされる。仲
介問い合わせプロクシは仲介者によって用意されるか作成されなければなら
ない。
・標準オントロジーは集中化された RDF リポジトリ(Oracle/RDF)等にマップで
きる。
・標準オントロジーは検索エンジンの専門性、感度の向上に利用できる。

4.3 Biomedical Informatics Research Network の取り組み
Biological Informatics Research Network は、fMRI など脳画像データを遠隔地の大学、
研究機関で共有化することを目的としたプロジェクトの成果である。NIH から資金提供さ
れて、14 大学と 22 研究機関で 3 次元医療用画像データを共有している。このネットワー
クは 3 つのデータベースとそれを支えるインフラストラクチャを担当するセンターで構成
されている。

BIRN は遠隔地間で大量のデータを相互にシームレスに利用するために、Grid 技術によっ
てインフラストラクチャが構成されていることが有名である。BIRN では、分散された多様
なデータを統合的に利用するため、いくつかのデータ管理に関する技術開発や調整を行っ
ている。以下にその一部を示す。
BIRNLex 33 - (DRAFT) — BIRN’s unique lexicon (BIRNLex)は、BIRNのデータソー
スに注釈を付けるために設計された統御された語彙集である。これらのデータソースに
は複雑なイメージデータベース－例えば、アルツハイマー病や統合失調症の研究に使わ
れる人間の構造的な、あるいは機能的磁気共鳴画像(MRI)－が含まれている。BIRNLex
は、BIRNの研究者が研究の中で有用な専門語彙集であり、神経外科、分子の種類、被
実験者情報、行動的・認知的プロセス、実験手法・設計、そして、異なった実験的研究
を横断的に大規模に統合する際に必要な基本データの出典のための共通語が含まれて
いる。
XML-Based Clinical Experiment Data Exchange Schema (XCEDE) 34 — これは、リ
サーチと臨床の研究を記述し、文書化するための拡張可能なメタデータ階層である。こ
のスキーマは典型的な臨床情報をベースに作成されている。

5. まとめ
メタデータの流通の標準技術としての OAI-PMH は、国内では国立国会図書館や NII、
図書館等を中心に、機関リポジトリへの導入が検討されている。OAI へのデータプロバイ
ダ、サービスプロバイダでもやはり文献や図書に関するものが多い。OAI-PMH では基本的
な情報形式として Dublin Core が定められているが、実際の運用では各データプロバイダ、
サービスプロバイダの特徴に応じて、拡張した情報形式が採用されている。
NII では参加機関が協力して共通データベースを構築することに主眼をおき、当面は NII
が入力システムを提供するが、徐々に OAI-PMH を利用した分散型への移行を検討してい
る。一方、国会図書館のデジタルアーカイブポータルでは、メタデータ収集プロトコルの
OAI-PMH や横断的検索プロトコルを併用して、より多くのデータプロバイダに対応すると
共に、統制語辞書を用いることで共通な検索レベルを満たすように工夫をしている。
メタデータを入力する際の課題としては、メタデータ項目の設定だけでなく、その中へ
の記述方法についても留意する必要がある。日本では文献関連のメタデータの記述方法を
科学技術振興機構(JST)が「科学技術情報流通技術基準(Standards for Information of
Science and Technology: SIST)」35として取りまとめている。メタデータの入力や集積を考
える場合には、この基準を参考にすべきである。
国立天文台データベース推進室が推進している Japan Virtual Observatory(JVO)は、こ
うした図書館系のメタデータ流通とは異なっている。JVO では多様な観測データをどのよ
うに統合して扱えるかが重要となっている。このため、必要とされるメタデータの種類や
構造、検索方式も新規に検討し、実装を行っている。このように科学的な研究データには
従来の情報サービスと異なった形でのメタデータの検討が必要と考えられる。
神経科学分野のメタデータや検索フレームワークの検討は、米国の SfN を中心に行われ
ており、BrainML や NIF 等でその成果を公表すると共に、利用者からのフィードバックに
よる改良を進めている。神経科学分野の扱う情報の種類は多様であり、実験などの条件記
述も複雑であるため、天文学における Virtual Observatory(VO)のように進展させることが
難しいと考えられる。しかし、論文の査読における検証、信頼性の確保を出版社などと協
調することで、メタデータの整備、付与が推進することが重要であろう。それにより、論
文、実験データ、モデルなどの間におけるメタデータの交換、流通が進むであろう。

A federated search services based on metadata harvested from several OAI compliant repositories. Uses
JDK1.4, Tomcat 4.0x, and a RDBMS server (e.g. Oracle, MySQL).
Avano is an OAI harvester that offers a central access to electronic resources about marine and aquatic
sciences (aquaculture, fisheries, geosciences, biology, water pollution...). The resources are harvested from
several Open Archives, including from non-specialized marine repositories.
BASE integrates scientific OAI-resources as one information type among others into the local digital library
environment, together with catalogues, article databases, digitised collections. The search interface features
many characteristics of internet search engines, thus offers a new type of search interface for a local digital
library. BASE uses the search technology of FAST Search & Transfer. To learn more about the project see

Callima is a search engine for scientific articles from various subject areas and sources. It provides a single
point of access to a significant number of Open Archives.
The citebase Search service provides users with the facility for searching across multiple archives with results
ranked according to many criteria, such as creation date and citation impact.
The Clio-i is a system to colect informations from anywhere repository which follow the OAI-PMH protocol. It
can havester complete documents, offering simple and advanced search engine, document visualization, use of
video, audio, text, and image archives for the users. In this case, it colect information about science from OAI
repositories.
A collaborative platform for organizing Open Access materials in Library & Information Science (LIS). colLib
harvests metadata-records from OAI-PMH-compliant repositories and enables manual 'tagging' of these
records to cluster them by subject or other meaningful categories. Tags are represented by pages in a wiki, that
can be annotated with links to related tags, external links and any other text deemed relevant.
CYCLADES is a system, designed to provide an open collaborative virtual archive environment, which (among
others) supports users, communities (and their members) with functionality for (i) advanced SEARCH in large,
heterogeneous, multidisciplinary OAI compliant digital archives (ii) COLLABORATIVE work; and (iii) FILTERING
and RECOMMENDATION of records, users, communities and collections. CYCLADES allows users to register
any OAI archive to CYCLADES, which then will be automatically harvested and indexed.
The digitAlexandria is a cross-platform system, composed by a set of very handy and fast tools, designed for
building digital archives of any complexity, from the personal archive of a single researcher up to the repository
of a big institution, such as a University or Research Centrer. It is based on a peer to peer network and is
compatible with the Open Archives Protocol.
Two diferent applications. On one side, a Directory about the projects and initiatives of digitalization existing in
Spain. On the other side, a Harvester of the same records gathered from some of those databases and that can
be consulted jointly the web address of these will always be provided to a ccess the digitized document, by
using Metadata harvesting techniques.
DL-Harvest is a federated archive, a service of DLIST. It brings together full-text, scholarly materials in the
Information Sciences from many different OAI-PMH compliant repositories.

DP9 is an open source gateway service that allows general search engines, like Google, to index OAI-compliant
archives. It stands between the crawler and the archive, intercepts the crawler's requests, forwards them to the
archive, and translates the archive's output from XML into HTML. This allows OAI archives hidden in the deep
Internet to be indexed by search engines that don't venture into the deep internet. DP9 also supports OAI name
resolution and service linking.

The Virtual Library GEO-LEO (www.geo-leo.org) offers searching and browsing in about 6 million earth sciences
and mining related bibliograhphic records. GEO-LEO is also a Service Provider harvesting repositories with the
above mentioned thematic content. The GEO-LEO Web-Interface allows a one stop retrieval and access to full
textes from repositories, librarian catalogues and other databases. GEO-LEO and GEO-LEOe-docs are
performed by the Lower Saxony State and University Library Göttingen (SUB) and the University Library
"Georgius Agricola" of the Technische Universitt Bergakademie Freiberg (UBF). The Project is funded by the
German Research Foundation (DFG).
An automatic citation indexing system covering physics journals.
The Service-Provider covers all subjects form different data-providers in Germany. The Pub-Types include
doctoral theses, diploma, articles, magazines and digitised materials.
METALIS is a Service Provider for the Library and Information Science field. We harvest metadata from
institutions that offer full-text papers and documents about Library and Information Science
NCSTRL provides unified access to technical reports and eprints from computer science departments,
institutes and laboratories. This is an OAI-based implementation of the NCSTRL project (see Davis & Lagoze,
JASIS 51(3) for a full history of the original NCSTRL project). This version replaces the Dienst architecture and
protcol with the OAI metadata harvesting protocol.
OAIster provides a search service on OAI archives. You can learn more about a particular institution's
collection at oaister.umdl.umich.edu/viewcolls.html.
OASIC is a search engine for french articles, memories and thesis in Communication and Information Sciences.
It provides a single point of access to a significant number of Open Archives in these areas.
Openarchives.eu is the European guide to OAI-PMH compliant digital repositories in the world. This is not a
search engine to find metadata stored in the repositories but a searchable index of the repositories themselves.
This portal uses repositories and collection descriptions harvested from the University of Illinois OAI-PMH Data
Provider Registry. The search engine and other editorial contents that complete the originary database have
been developed by Horizons Unlimited srl (Bologna, Italy)
A section on "Digital Objects" allows metadata searching through a number of other service providers (OAIster,
arXiv, RePEc, CiteSeer, NCSTRL, PubMed Central, Pleiadi). We also offer Google searching of all the
repositories' web sites through Google Co-op.
The Perseus system harvests registered OAI repositories and incorporates the information into its search
interface.

Description
PLEIADI project aims at building a national platform that offers centralized access to the scholarly literature
archived in Italian repositories.
An interactive, web-based tool to test repositories for compliancy with various levels of the Open Archives
Initiative Protocol.
SAIL-eprints (Search, Alert, Impact and Link) is an electronic open access service provider for finding scientific
or technical documents, published or unpublished, in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Materials Sciences,
anotechnologies, Microelectronics, Computer Sciences, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Earth Sciences, Meteorology,
Oceanography, Agriculture, and related application activities. SAIL-eprints has been designed primarily to
collect information on scientific documents (metadata) authored by CNR researchers and deposited as
preprints or postprints in CNR institutional open access archives. Also, SAIL-eprints collects metadata from
other data repositories all over the world publishing materials in the same scientific fields.
Scirus distinguishes itself from existing search engines by concentrating on scientific content only and by
searching both web and (often proprietary) databases. Scirus' aim is to provide scientists with one
comprehensive search platform covering both the web and the normally "invisible" databases. Scirus now
harvests Open Archives data.
The Sheet Music Consortium is a group of libraries working toward the goal of building an open collection of
digitized sheet music using the Open Archives Initiative:Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Harvested metadata
about sheet music in participating collections is hosted by the UCLA Digital Library Program, which provides an
access service via this metadata to sheet music records at the host libraries. Member institutions and data
providers have chosen to catalog their sheet music in different ways, but a very large proportion of the original
sheets in participating collections has been digitized, allowing users direct access to the music itself and - in
many cases - covers and advertisements that offer evidence of the cultural context in which the songs were
published.
The State and University Library Bremen - Germany offers a library catalogue called SuUB Bremen, where
selected OAI-data providers are included. The search engine delivers record about localized library ressources
of print and electronic materials (books, journals, doctoral thesis, articles, magazines, reports, etc.).
