Marie Wallin - Rowan Head Designer
What is a typical day at Green Lane Mill? Madness!! I start
by scribbling designs in my sketch book and then I decide
on the pattern or stitch. I literally have stuff all over the floor
when I’m designing - yarns, needles, fashion magazines,
resource books, tear sheets etc.
What inspires your designs? I love nature and the textures and colours you see in the
landscape, such as rocks, pebbles, shells, tree bark etc. I am a great fan of Indian and
Middle Eastern art as well as more traditional patterns such as Fairisle and Nordic designs.
What was your highlight of 2011? I was very proud to meet HRH Prince of Wales last year
as part of Wool Week and the Campaign for Wool.
Who taught you to knit? My mother taught me to hand knit
at around 7 years of age, but we were also taught at primary
school.
Which are your favourite Rowan yarns? I love Felted
Tweed, Colourspun, Rowan Tweed and Fine Rowan Tweed
as well as all the British Sheep Breeds yarns.
What are you working on at the moment? I’ve now finished
designing and shooting for Winter 2012 and I’m now focusing
on our SS13 collections (which i’m very excited about!)
What are your plans for the future? I would like to think we
can introduce more British made yarns as well as carrying
on producing great designs and the lovely photography
shoots that everyone expects from Rowan.

Yarnmarket is not your typical yarn store. It’s tucked away in a small office complex, in a small
town just outside of Columbus, Ohio. It’s so small and quiet, in fact, that squirrels and birds
feast on nuts being tossed out the door of an office marked, “Yarnmarket Showroom.”
One of the largest – and most successful – online yarn stores in America, Yarnmarket is
growing faster than anyone had imagined because knitters and crocheters throughout the
world have discovered the huge selection and great service that makes Yarnmarket unique.
What’s the secret of their success?
“Customer service,” Alex Nikifortchuk insists. “Everyone at Yarnmarket is totally committed to
providing the best customer service they can. From the people who answer the phones to the
ladies who pack up each order we ship, we are all totally dedicated to our shoppers.”
Alex took over operations of the new online yarn store in 2003, relocating the business from its
original California location to the basement of his home in Ohio. Each evening, he downloaded
that day’s orders, packed them up and shipped them out to his customers. Grateful for their
business, he signed each knitter’s invoice with a personal message, “Thanks from Alex!”
Now, eight years later, more than 20 efficient employees ensure that Alex’s original promise is
fulfilled.
“Lynn, our Customer Service manager, does a great job seeing that Yarnmarket shoppers get
fast, attentive service and whatever help they need,” Alex says. “Our goal is to answer to any
customer’s question with a resounding, “Yes!”’
With more than 1000 yarns in stock, and thousands of books and patterns, it’s no surprise that
Yarnmarket.com has become the yarn shop of first choice for knitters. “We serve an enormous
market with varying skills and tastes,” Alex says. “It’s important that we carry a lot of different
styles from a wide variety of manufacturers.”
8 - February 2012
“Our advertising theme line is, Fabulous fashions. Fast. And friendly.’ And we mean it. We
offer a vast selection of yarns to our customers. We take orders online 24 hours a day. We ship
anywhere in the world – even Antarctica. And we offer the best customer service possible.”
Although the shop got its start online, it’s now serving a regular clientele of local knitters,
and yarn enthusiasts from throughout the country. Yarnmarket has become a great place for
knitters to meet.
As the company has grown in the past few years, Yarnmarket has developed additional sites
to supplement the products and services offered by the store. Among the most successful
– and well known – is Yarndex.com, the online yarn database that provides comprehensive
information for more than 5000 yarns.
Yarndex.com has become particularly popular with knitters seeking substitutions, and
especially for those who want to use vintage patterns where the original yarns are no longer
available.
“There are so many yarns in the world,” says Jan, the force behind the company’s newsletters
and bulletins, and Alex’s right hand woman for merchandise selection. “With Yarndex, we help
people find exactly what they want. This is a free service we offer as a courtesy to all knitters
all over the world, and we’ve been told that when other yarn shops hire new staff, the first thing
they teach them is how to find information on Yarndex.”
With an immense inventory of yarns, books, needles, patterns and accessories and
unparalleled dedication to customer service, Yarnmarket.com has established itself as one of
the most successful and customer-oriented shops in the country. If you’re ever in Columbus,
Ohio you might want to visit their showroom and explore their warehouses. If you’re like most
yarn enthusiasts, you’ll be convinced the trip was well worth the effort.
