毎月の学校の集まり
Some students will remember that there used
to be a monthly ‘School Pub Night’ held at the
Tullemore Irish Pub in Tomigaya, a 2minute walk from the school.
一部の生徒さんは、学校から歩いて 2 分のアイリッ
シュ・パブ Tullamore(タラモア)で毎月開かれていた
『Pub Night』のことを覚えていると思いす。 I am thinking of re-starting a monthly event
but wonder if the pub is the best place to hold
it. The good thing about the pub is that
you buy your own food and drink and you only
pay for what you have. On the other hand, the
pub is quite small and people have to sit at
separate tables so it is difficult for everyone to
meet everyone else.
私は毎月のイベントを再開することについて考えて
いますが、パブが最適の場所かどうか疑問を持っ
ています。タラモアの良いところは、自分の飲食物
を自分で買うということです、つまり、自身が飲み
食いした分だけを払うのです。その反面、パブはあ
まり広くはなく、別々のテーブルにつかなければな
らないので、だれもが知り合いになるわけにはいき
ません。

I think KO, the restaurant where we had
Brett’s welcome party and the dinner for Iain
might be better but it’s a bit more expensive.
It costs ￥2,200 for food + whatever you drink.

Iain McInally, the creator and writer of the
Speak Your Mind method (SyM), was in Japan
for meetings with a company called
‘CanadaLanguage’, which is opening a school in
Ochanomizu and will be using SyM for their
English courses.
He was only here for
a short time, from
Friday, 20th February
to Monday, 2nd March.
This was Iain’s first
visit to Japan and
although he was very
busy most of the time, he
managed to try nearly
every kind of Japanese
food and liked it very
much. He also visited
Harajuku, Meiji Shrine and
Shibuya and was surprised at
how many people there were
everywhere.
Iain spent 7 days in Tokyo and
2 days in Gunma for a visit to
Choujuukan, a Meiji Period hot
spa inn, at Houshi Onsen. He
had never been to a hot spa
before and enjoyed it very much.

SYM メソッドの考案者で、テキスト執筆者のイ
アン・マキナリーは、お茶の水に新しく開校す
る SYM メソッドを使った英会話スクール『カナ
ダ・ラングウェッジ』の関係者と
の打ち合わせのため来日しま
した。
2 月 20 日(金)から 3 月 2 日
(月)までの短い滞在でした。
イアンにとって今回は初
めての日本で、滞在中は
大忙しでした。でも、彼
は、日本のいろんな食
べ物に挑戦して、その
どれもが彼のお気に
入りになりました。ま
た、原宿、明治神宮、
渋谷をめぐって、ど
こにでも大勢の人
たちがいることにた
いへん驚いていま
した。
イアンは東京で 7 日間、そして 2 日間を群馬
の法師温泉にある明治時代に開業した旅館
「長寿館」で過ごしました。彼はこれまで温泉
に入ったことがなかったのですが、初めて入る
温泉に大喜びでした。

Iain McInally’s visit to Tokyo
On Friday, the 27th February, there was
a dinner at Ko, a Japanese restaurant
just round the corner from the school,
to give students the chance to meet
Iain. I think everyone enjoyed the
evening very much. Iain told me later
that he was very impressed at how the
students all seemed to enjoy studying
at the SyM school and at how positive
they all were. A total of 25 students
attended the dinner.
Every year in September I go to Italy to help train
new teachers at Iain McInally’s school in Verona.
During the training students are needed for the new
teachers to practice on and since 2006 I have been
offering students from my school in Tokyo the
chance to spend a week in Verona and have free
lessons at Iain’s school.
Verona, a World Heritage site, is a beautiful old
town between Milan and Venice. It’s famous for
Romeo and Juliet, a Roman colosseum, its
Medieval market square and for its restaurants and
cafes. It has a lot of good shops, too.
The dates for the training period this year are from
Wednesday, 16th September to Tuesday, 22nd
September. There will be 2 or 3 lessons
a day on the 16th, 17th, 18th,
21st and 22nd. On the 19th or
20th there will be a day trip to
either Venice or Firenze.
Students who went before
stayed in hotels but this time
Iain has suggested that it might
be possible for students to
‘homestay’ with the families of
students at the Verona school. I
think it would be fun to stay with an
Italian family and experience real
home cooking. Of course, the family you stay with
will not speak Japanese so you will have to
communicate in English!
If you prefer, you can stay in a hotel and I will
make bookings for you. All you have to do is book
your flight.
There are no direct flights to Verona from Japan.
You can fly from Narita to Frankfurt, Rome and
Paris and then take a flight on to Verona. I will
meet you at Verona airport and transfer you to your
hotel or to introduce you to your homestay family.

を合わすためのディナーがありまし
た。その夜は、みんな、とても楽しん
でいたように私は思います。イアン
は、生徒さんが、皆、SYM で学ぶこ
とを楽しんでいて、非常に前向きであるこ
とに感動したと、あとで私に話しました。こ
のディナーには 25 人の生徒さんが参加し
ました。
私は毎年 9 月、イタリアのベローナにあるイアンの英
会話スクールへ、新しい先生たちのトレーニングを手
伝いに行きますが、この間、新人先生のレッスンの
練習のために生徒さんが必要になります。2006 年か
ら SYM スクールでは生徒さんがベローナに 1 週間
滞在し、無料レッスンを受けられる機会を設けていま
す。
ベローナはミラノとベネチアの間にある美しい古い町
です。町全体が世界遺産で、ロミオとジュリエット、ロ
ーマ時代のコロシアム、中世のマーケット広場、そし
て
そこにあるレストランやカフェが有名
です。また、たくさんの素敵なお店
が軒を連ねています。
今年のトレーニング期間は 9 月
16 日(水)から 22 日(火)まで
で、16 日、17 日、18 日、21
日、22 日は毎日 2 時間から
3 時間のレッスンがありま
す。19 日(土)か 20 日(日)
は、ベネチアかフェレンツェ
への日帰りの旅を予定しています。
これまでに参加した生徒さんはホテルに滞在しまし
たが、今回はイアンからの提案で、ベローナのイアン
の学校の生徒さん宅でのホームステイが可能になる
かもしれないということでした。私は、イタリア人の家
族と一緒に過ごし、本場のイタリア家庭料理を経験
することは楽しいことだと思います。もちろん、彼ら
は日本語を話さないので、あなたは英語で意思を伝
えることになります！
ご希望でしたら、ホテルに滞在することも可能です。
その場合は、私がホテルの手配と予約をします。あ
なたがしなければいけないことは航空券の手配だけ
です。
日本からベローナへの直行便はありません。成田か
らはフランクフルト、ローマ、あるいはパリ経由でベロ
ーナに入ることが出来ます。私は、ベローナ空港で

Tips for learning English
You need words if you want to
speak your mind in English. It will
make your English more natural if
you try to remember groups of
words rather than words on their
own.
These are some examples of how
words form groups in English:

Many students already know our new teacher,
Brett. He joined the Speak Your Mind
School, Tokyo in August 2008 and mainly
teaches morning classes, although he
sometimes fills in for me in the evenings
and on Saturdays. Brett has proved to be
a very good teacher and is popular
among students.

I write this Brett is participating in
the 3rd Tokyo Marathon. He also

for a long time in order to give students experience of
hearing and understanding someone other than me.
Ideally, all the students in the school would have
several teachers and I am therefore planning on adding
more teachers in the future. I would really like to add a
female teacher to the staff.

Mr Shuichi Taniguchi put on a play at TheaterX in
Ryougoku from 12th ~ 15th March called ‘Confucian
Analects for Thieves’ I didn’t understand the Japanese
but the choreography and music were wonderful.
谷口秀一さんは、3 月 12 日から 15 日、両国のシア
ターカイで『泥棒論語』というお芝居を公演しました。
私は日本語の台詞が理解できませんでしたが、振付
けと音楽は素晴らしかったです。
Ms Yoko Kato and Mr Kai Uchida played in a
wonderful concert of piano duets at on the 15th March
at the Meguro Persimmon Hall. There was music by
Falla, Milhaud, Poulenc, Debussey, Infante and
Chabrier, all united by a Spanish theme. Yoko and Kai
produced the concert together with the other 2 pianists,
all
members
of
the
‘yk
project’.
That’s right up my street! = I really like it!
ブレットはカナダ人ですが、長年、
米国で学び、そして、日本に 7 年住
んでいます。彼は、SYM の先生、さ
らに加えて、お琴の先生とマラソンの
コーチでもあります。私がこれを書いて
いる間にも、ブレットは第 3 回東京マラ
ソンに参加しています。彼もまた日本語
を話すので、日本人学習者が直面する英
語の様々な問題を知ることが出来ます。
加藤陽子さんと内田塊さんは、3 月 15 日、目黒パー
シモンホールでのコンサートで、素晴らしいピアノデ
ュエットを演奏をしました。ファリャ、ミヨー、プーラン
ク、ドビュッシー、インファンテ、シャブリエ、全ての音
楽がスペインをテーマに結びつけられたものでした。
陽子さんと塊さんは、その他の 2 人のピアニスト（『yk
プロジェクト』のメンバー）と共に、コンサートを制作し
ました。

A Few  oughts
This newsletter has taken me a long time to do.
It’s been in my mind for a long time but
teaching and looking after the school simply
takes up a lot of time. It is only now, with
another teacher, that I have found the time.
It was in 1997 that I decided to leave Issey
Miyake after 3 and a half years there and return
to teaching. I opened ‘Hugo no Eikaiwa
Gakkou’ in Uehara in July 1996. In January
2001 the school moved to Tomigaya, to the 4th
floor of the Gyuukaku building. At that time
the name of the school changed to ‘The Speak
Your Mind School, Tokyo’, or SYM. Then,
nearly 3 years ago, the school moved to its
present location in Yoyogi Hachiman.
The school started with 1 student in 1997 and
has grown steadily over the years without any
advertising or leafleting. At the moment there
are 66 students with more joining all the time.
My aim now is to find 2 more teachers, ideally 2
women to add balance to the present staff. As I
speak British English and Brett North American
English I think it would be useful to you, the
students, to add teachers who speak with other
common accents like Australian, New Zealand
or perhaps a regional British accent from the
North or South East.
Sometimes students say they prefer British
English or American English but most want to
learn to speak and understand English in as
many situations as possible, when travelling,
studying or doing business abroad. Others have
English-speaking friends here in Japan.
Practically, it is better to hear a variety of
accents in the school and to get used to them.
For this reason, I need to find new teachers as soon as
possible!

このニュースレターを創刊するまでに長い時間が
かかりました。長い期間考えてはいたのですが、
ただただ授業と学校の運営に追われていまし
た。それがいまもう一人、先生が増えたおかげ
で、ようやくその時間を手に入れることが出来ま
した。
三年半働いたイッセイミヤケを離れ、英語教育に
復帰しようと決めたのは 1997 年でした。私は、
1998 年 7 月、代々木上原に『ヒューゴの英会話
学校』を開きました。2001 年 1 月には富ヶ谷の牛
角ビルの 4 階に移転しました。その時に、学校の
名前を『 The Speak Your Mind School, Tokyo
(SYM)』に変更しました。そして、3 年ほど前に現
在の代々木八幡に移りました。
学校は 1997 年に 1 人の生徒さんから始めて、
広告やチラシなしでも、年を追って着実に育って
きました。そしていま、生徒さんは順調に増え続
け 66 人になりました。
私の当面の目標は先生をもう二人、理想的には
現在のスタッフとのバランスを取るため、女性の
先生を二人見つけることです。私がイギリス英
語、ブレットが北米英語を話すので、オーストラリ
アやニュージーランドのような他の一般的なアク
セント、もしくはイギリスの北、または南東のアク
セントで話す先生を加えることが生徒のみなさん
の役に立つだろうと考えています。
時々、生徒さんは、イギリス英語が好き、アメリカ
英語が好きと言いますが、多くの生徒さんは、海
外旅行や留学、海外でのビジネスなどの、可能
な限り多くの場面で英語を話せて理解できること
を望んでいます。他には、ここ日本に英語を話す
友人がいる人もいます。実用的には、学校でいろ
いろなアクセントを聞き、それらに慣れることがよ
り良いのです。
だからこそ、私は一日も早く、新しい先生を見つけ出さ
なければいけない！

takes up a lot of time. It is only now, with
another teacher, that I have found the time.
It was in 1997 that I decided to leave Issey
Miyake after 3 and a half years there and return
to teaching. I opened ‘Hugo no Eikaiwa
Gakkou’ in Uehara in July 1996. In January
2001 the school moved to Tomigaya, to the 4th
floor of the Gyuukaku building. At that time
the name of the school changed to ‘The Speak
Your Mind School, Tokyo’, or SYM. Then,
nearly 3 years ago, the school moved to its
present location in Yoyogi Hachiman.
The school started with 1 student in 1997 and
has grown steadily over the years without any
advertising or leafleting. At the moment there
are 66 students with more joining all the time.
My aim now is to find 2 more teachers, ideally 2
women to add balance to the present staff. As I
speak British English and Brett North American
English I think it would be useful to you, the
students, to add teachers who speak with other
common accents like Australian, New Zealand
or perhaps a regional British accent from the
North or South East.
Sometimes students say they prefer British
English or American English but most want to
learn to speak and understand English in as
many situations as possible, when travelling,
studying or doing business abroad. Others have
English-speaking friends here in Japan.
Practically, it is better to hear a variety of
accents in the school and to get used to them.
For this reason, I need to find new teachers as soon as
possible!

このニュースレターを創刊するまでに長い時間が
かかりました。長い期間考えてはいたのですが、
ただただ授業と学校の運営に追われていまし
た。それがいまもう一人、先生が増えたおかげ
で、ようやくその時間を手に入れることが出来ま
した。
三年半働いたイッセイミヤケを離れ、英語教育に
復帰しようと決めたのは 1997 年でした。私は、
1998 年 7 月、代々木上原に『ヒューゴの英会話
学校』を開きました。2001 年 1 月には富ヶ谷の牛
角ビルの 4 階に移転しました。その時に、学校の
名前を『 The Speak Your Mind School, Tokyo
(SYM)』に変更しました。そして、3 年ほど前に現
在の代々木八幡に移りました。
学校は 1997 年に 1 人の生徒さんから始めて、
広告やチラシなしでも、年を追って着実に育って
きました。そしていま、生徒さんは順調に増え続
け 66 人になりました。
私の当面の目標は先生をもう二人、理想的には
現在のスタッフとのバランスを取るため、女性の
先生を二人見つけることです。私がイギリス英
語、ブレットが北米英語を話すので、オーストラリ
アやニュージーランドのような他の一般的なアク
セント、もしくはイギリスの北、または南東のアク
セントで話す先生を加えることが生徒のみなさん
の役に立つだろうと考えています。
時々、生徒さんは、イギリス英語が好き、アメリカ
英語が好きと言いますが、多くの生徒さんは、海
外旅行や留学、海外でのビジネスなどの、可能
な限り多くの場面で英語を話せて理解できること
を望んでいます。他には、ここ日本に英語を話す
友人がいる人もいます。実用的には、学校でいろ
いろなアクセントを聞き、それらに慣れることがよ
り良いのです。
だからこそ、私は一日も早く、新しい先生を見つけ出さ
なければいけない！

毎月の学校の集まり
Some students will remember that there used
to be a monthly ‘School Pub Night’ held at the
Tullemore Irish Pub in Tomigaya, a 2minute walk from the school.
一部の生徒さんは、学校から歩いて 2 分のアイリッ
シュ・パブ Tullamore(タラモア)で毎月開かれていた
『Pub Night』のことを覚えていると思いす。 I am thinking of re-starting a monthly event
but wonder if the pub is the best place to hold
it. The good thing about the pub is that
you buy your own food and drink and you only
pay for what you have. On the other hand, the
pub is quite small and people have to sit at
separate tables so it is difficult for everyone to
meet everyone else.
私は毎月のイベントを再開することについて考えて
いますが、パブが最適の場所かどうか疑問を持っ
ています。タラモアの良いところは、自分の飲食物
を自分で買うということです、つまり、自身が飲み
食いした分だけを払うのです。その反面、パブはあ
まり広くはなく、別々のテーブルにつかなければな
らないので、だれもが知り合いになるわけにはいき
ません。

Monthly School Get-togethers
I think KO, the restaurant where we had
Brett’s welcome party and the dinner for Iain
might be better but it’s a bit more expensive.
It costs ￥2,200 for food + whatever you drink.

Iain McInally, the creator and writer of the
Speak Your Mind method (SyM), was in Japan
for meetings with a company called
‘CanadaLanguage’, which is opening a school in
Ochanomizu and will be using SyM for their
English courses.
He was only here for
a short time, from
Friday, 20th February
to Monday, 2nd March.
This was Iain’s first
visit to Japan and
although he was very
busy most of the time, he
managed to try nearly
every kind of Japanese
food and liked it very
much. He also visited
Harajuku, Meiji Shrine and
Shibuya and was surprised at
how many people there were
everywhere.
Iain spent 7 days in Tokyo and
2 days in Gunma for a visit to
Choujuukan, a Meiji Period hot
spa inn, at Houshi Onsen. He
had never been to a hot spa
before and enjoyed it very much.

SYM メソッドの考案者で、テキスト執筆者のイ
アン・マキナリーは、お茶の水に新しく開校す
る SYM メソッドを使った英会話スクール『カナ
ダ・ラングウェッジ』の関係者と
の打ち合わせのため来日しま
した。
2 月 20 日(金)から 3 月 2 日
(月)までの短い滞在でした。
イアンにとって今回は初
めての日本で、滞在中は
大忙しでした。でも、彼
は、日本のいろんな食
べ物に挑戦して、その
どれもが彼のお気に
入りになりました。ま
た、原宿、明治神宮、
渋谷をめぐって、ど
こにでも大勢の人
たちがいることにた
いへん驚いていま
した。
イアンは東京で 7 日間、そして 2 日間を群馬
の法師温泉にある明治時代に開業した旅館
「長寿館」で過ごしました。彼はこれまで温泉
に入ったことがなかったのですが、初めて入る
温泉に大喜びでした。
