Baffling assault
Police are baffled by a seemingly unprovoked assault in
Woolworths Supermarket
carpark on Friday night.
At about 7.25pm the male
victim had just placed his
groceries into his white Nissan
Navara when he was set upon,
possibly by more than one attacker. The victim was wearing
a black and white adidas rugby
jersey and blue jeans.
Police would like to hear from
anyone who witnessed the assault, or who has information
that would assist the investigation. Please contact constable

Hot time in old hall

вЂњYouвЂ™re the first venue to sell
out, so weвЂ™re going to give you
something special,вЂќ Dave Dobbyn told the faithful at Kihikihi
Town Hall on Sunday night. And
he did.
It wasnвЂ™t a perfect performance, evident by the amount of
self imposed вЂ�fine moneyвЂ™ on the
stage at the end of the show,
but everyone had fun and the
old hall was rocking like never
before.
Dobbyn, and his rhythm section of Ross Burge and Bones
Hillman, delivered a back catalogue of hits from ThвЂ™ Dudes, DD
Smash and a solo career into its
fourth decade, interspersed with
some of the new вЂ�Available LightвЂ™
material.
It wasnвЂ™t just the music we
enjoyed either, we got a bit of the
world according to Dobbyn.
The band tried their hand at
a bit of improv as well, but this
early on the tour that didnвЂ™t
really gel. When it could have,
Dobbyn admitted he forgot what
song he was trying to segue into.
But when Dave said sing, we
sang, and when he said stand,
we stood.
Then we all went into the cold
night, happy.

Waipa surge
Waipa property prices have
jumped nearly a quarter in the
last year.
The latest figures from Quotable Value New Zealand show
residential property prices in
the district for the year to May
2005 have increased 24% to an
average sale price of $237,091.
This compares to the national average of a 13.5% increase
over the last year.

WHAT can you do for your paper?
Four readers have responded to our story about the
new Smokefree legislation, three in support of the bars.
Three respondents are non-smokers.
Janine had worked in the bar industry for seven years
and believes her health was put at risk by smokers, so
she applauds the new legislation and those that obey the
rules. She understands business may be suffering, but
believes the health of the nation is more important.
Edith doesnвЂ™t think it makes sense to make it so tough
on businesses. She believes it will be more than just the
bars that suffer, as more people choose to stay home and
enjoy a smoke and a drink, and she misses going for a
game of pool and a drink with her mates.
Andrew says the Government has tackled the problem
the wrong way, using legislation rather than education
to cover up a poor job by the health industry. He says the
problem has not been solved, it has just shifted location.
Maureen, a smoker, is more to the point.
вЂњThese rules are against my human rights. My friends
and I used to go and have a drink together twice a week,
now that we canвЂ™t have a smoke we hardly ever go. There
are to many do gooders trying to make everyone live the
way they want. Why donвЂ™t all the non smokers join the
Destiny Church and leave all the smokers in the pub.вЂќ

The process at that point
was supposedly submissions,
yet it seemed a decision had
already been made. People
were referred to green forms
to record comments and concerns regarding the works.
Many considered them to
actually be the submissions
referred to but they were not.
Tanya Running from Opus
stated that the realignment
was вЂњnot about more parking for the Medical Centre.вЂќ
Councillor Empson was also
clear on this point. However
Phil Barker said that it вЂњwas
about more parking for the
Medical CentreвЂќ weighted
amongst
other
considerations.
The Medical CentreвЂ™s own
parking space at the corner
of Vaile and Teasdale Streets
could be nearly twice as big if
the grass slope was terraced
and filled but it is apparently
cited for a mysterious future
development.
Opus did not have diagrams of the proposed works
to hand out.
A diagram of one of three
less intrusive options turned
down by council found its way
onto the wall. It was clearly
preferred by those in attendance over the version being
officially displayed as a crowd
gathered around it.
Whether Opus did a good
job would depend on their
objective.
Whoever gave them their
brief did not include prior
stated public concerns.
A better impression would
have been made by Phil
Barker being there alone.
Who needs a ring road if it
inconveniences locals?
The planned one way street
will have traffic leaving the
main street for Teasdale
Street forced to drive by
the Medical Centre causing
congestion where there was
none.
The solution is to use the
funds for the realignment
to build a modern medical
venue near the Events Centre or down Bond Road and
lease it to businesses from
Vaile Street.
This would be actual
growth without a sacrifice.
Ring road-race track enthusiasts could then plow through
the spare section, no parking
required.
The small consulting rooms
of the Te Awamutu Clinic
would not be missed, but the
open space of Anzac Green
would be.

Recently IвЂ™ve seen cars sensibly angle parked with their
front wheels on the grass opposite Te Awamutu Medical
Centre.
As with the Community
BoardвЂ™s version for realignment, this is far less intrusive
than what Council has opted
for. Council has amplified the
Community BoardвЂ™s scheme
into an abomination.
Recent comment over what
Anzac Green was prior used
for is a red herring. It was a
recreational space and still
is. The point is that the realignment requires its reserve
status to be revoked.
Apparently Opus have an
expertise in reassigning land
designation for such schemes.
At the Opus PR meeting
a large wall diagram stated
that Vaile Street вЂ�willвЂ™ be
realigned and that Teasdale
Street вЂ�willвЂ™ be turned into a
one way street.
In response to Alistair Kerr: no, you
wouldnвЂ™t have heard of any objection to
the pools occupying one end of Anzac
Green.
Simple reason вЂ“ the pools were a
recreational facility for the whole community to enjoy. They were a valid use of
this space. A road reserve will not be of
any recreational use, nor an asset to the
community.
Anzac Green is a designated reserve,
it is a listed Historic Place. This designation means the council must apply to the
Commissioner for the Environment for
permission to use the land for anything
other than a reserve (i.e. recreational
community space). I doubt that by the
furtherest stretch of the imagination,
the proposed car parking and widened
road could be described as this.
In addition, I disagree with all those
stating the proposals will improve safety
and traffic flow.
Really? Have a closer look. No facilities for pedestrians to cross Vaile Street
at any point, increased traffic flow with
many more people seeking carparking in
this area, traffic to the Primary School
routed along Vaile Street, all intersections uncontrolledвЂ¦
As a relatively recent resident of Te
Awamutu, I think the proposed ring
road is a short-sighted and ill-thought
out plan. It will not be able to fully serve
itвЂ™s intention (of routing traffic away
form the main street), it will discourage
pedestrian access into the town centre,
and safety will continue to be an issue.
Oh, and thanks for the maths Alistair,
so the realignment will only take 840
square metres? I donвЂ™t know where you
live but for my kids, thatвЂ™s a pretty sizeable area to run around on (and I wait to
be pleasantly surprised if that is all the
Council ends up usingвЂ¦)
Come on Te Awamutu, letвЂ™s keep this
green space which gives our town some
character and dignity. Sure, it could do
with a bit of planting and more facilities
on it, but once itвЂ™s lost to car parking itвЂ™ll
be gone forever. And guess what?
ThereвЂ™ll never be enough carparking
while people continue to demand the
right to park right outside their destination and refuse to consider walking a few
metres

Cocksy didnвЂ™t let cat out of bag...

Cocksy didnвЂ™t let the cat out of the bag
at Fieldays (or the kids out of the dog
house for that matter).
He was asked so often how he got on
in Superstars of Treasure Island that
he even wore a t-shirt printed with the
slogan вЂ�Dont ask me who won Treasure
Island!вЂ™
One of his biggest fans even put
himself in the doghouse - literally - to
get some inside knowledge, but Cocksy
wasnвЂ™t spilling the beans.
KorakonuiвЂ™s Riley Chick (8) was one
of the Fieldays visitors entertained
by Cocksy as the Carters frontman
вЂ�whipped upвЂ™ a dog house inside the
combined veterinary stand.
Riley has watched the whole Superstars of Treasure Island series, but
Cocksy wasnвЂ™t letting anything slip.
He had to wait until Sunday night to
find out the answer, just like everyone
else.
The 90-minute final episode saw three
remaining contestants - Cocksy, former
All Black Josh Kronfield and former
Kiwi league player Brent Todd, face a
series of challenges over two days.
But sadly at the end of the first day
Cocksy was eliminated after a rare
miscalculation on his part, leaving just
Kronfield and Todd in the hunt for the
princessвЂ™ missing remains and the buried treasure.
вЂ�ToddyвЂ™ was RileyвЂ™s first choice to win
the event, but it was Kronfield who was
first to uncover the $50,000 вЂ�treasureвЂ™.
Superstars of Treasure Island featured contestants from Ireland and Australia, as well as the most feared, hated
and loved former contestants from New
Zealand.
Other New Zealanders to take part
included Louise Wallace, Michael Laws,
Erika Takacs and Pieta Keating, but
they were eliminated along the way
with all of the Aussie and Irish competitors.
Superstars of Treasure Island was
filmed in Tonga and hosted by former
teenage pop sensation Jon Stevens.
The Wellington singer shot to fame in
1979 with his hits, Jezebel and Montego
Bay, then moved to Australia where he
found success with the band Noiseworks
and later as the singer in INXS.
He has since returned to a solo career.
COCKSY (John Cocks) and Chickie (Riley Chick) test out the dog house constructed by the TV
personality at the veterinary stand during Fieldays. Cocksy was convinced to come to Fieldays

Local schools battle swift spread of influenza

least two-three days.
вЂњThis is much higher than normal for this
time of the year.
вЂњSome havenвЂ™t been away for long enough,
however, and on their first day back weвЂ™ve
had to send them home again.вЂќ
At Pekerau Primary (304 students) there
has been around 35 students absent each
day, with 54 the highest number away on
just one day. Principal John Cubitt is quite
sure the majority have been affected by the
influenza that is sweeping the region.
вЂњIвЂ™d estimate at least 90% of those are away
with the flu and we have been reminding
parents to keep their children away until
they are completely well.вЂќ
KILLER вЂ�FLUвЂ™ STRAIN
The influenza strain spreading like wildfire
through schools is вЂ�Hong Kong BвЂ™ and was not
expected to be so dominant this year.
The virus has not been common in New
Zealand since 1987, so children born after
that date have not been exposed to develop
any immunity to it.
This years вЂ�flu vaccine had the Shanghai B
strain included, which has also been circulating, but has not been a cause of any deaths as
the Hong Kong B strain has been.
Three people have died from influenza
complications (including a student at Hamilton BoysвЂ™ High) and large numbers have been
hit hard by it, clogging medical centres and
emergency departments.

are so concerned.
вЂќWe are seeing lots of children, not necessarily all of them have the вЂ�full blownвЂ™ flu, but
there are many anxious parents out there.
вЂњInfluenza symptoms include high temper-

atures, joint pain and a feeling of exhaustion
which send people to bed.
вЂњThere is also a lot of vomiting and diarrhoea around at the moment, but that could
possibly be a separate virus.
вЂњItвЂ™s a matter of careful observation by
parents, plenty of fluids for the sick child, bed
rest and paracetamol. If these basic measures arenвЂ™t working after 24 hours then we
need to see them.вЂќ
Dr Lack emphasises the need for parents to
keep their children at home if they are sick
вЂњIt is very infectious, so the best way to halt
the spread of the flu is by staying away.вЂќ
While it is hard to estimate the length
of time the influenza will continue to be a
problem, health authorities expect it to be
circulating for at least another two or three
weeks. The influenza cycle is expected to
last at least six weeks and the area has had
three-four weeks of it so far.

The first Evelyn Adams knew of the influenza epidemic sweeping the country was a
phone call from school to say her nine-yearold daughter Nicole was unwell.
вЂњSheвЂ™d had a few colds before, but never anything like this. She initially had a high fever
and vomiting before the cold-like symptoms
appeared - it threw me a bit, I wasnвЂ™t quite
sure what we were facing to start with.вЂќ
A runny nose, sore throat and cough followed the high fever and vomiting, with
Nicole in bed for the best part of a week.
вЂњLuckily weвЂ™re on a farm at Te Kawa, so we
can always have someone at home with her.
Parents working away from home must find
it much harder to be off work for at least a
week to care for their sick children.вЂќ
Nicole attends Te Awamutu Primary (460

have been steadily rising.

reward, according to equestrian
legend Mark Todd.
Todd says it was a great result
for the young rider from Kaipaki.

hard she has worked to make it

young ones getting the results
they deserve.

The leaderboard championship
is decided on points accumulated
from, predominantly, one-day
events over the autumn and
spring season. There were two
three-day events at Taupo and

The 20-year-old received $5000
in cash for the winning combination (horse and rider), along with
a Pessoa Saddle (worth about
$3500) for most points by a rider
on advanced horses - again heading off Grayling, the Olympian
and New Zealand World Cup
qualifier winner at Kihikihi for

Seminar to discuss
ginseng investment
Te Awamutu investors will be able to hear
about an opportunity to invest in ginseng being
grown in New Zealand for the multi-billion dollar
global market.
A seminar to be held at the Burchell Pavillion
at 10am this Thursday, will outline an opportunity for investors who wish to become involved
in a new horticultural industry which meets a
centuries-old market.
Ginseng is one of the highest value crops per
hectare, thanks to growing world-wide demand
as a basis for herbal health supplements.
At about US$350/kg for dried root, New Zealand exports of the medicinal herb are expected
to rival the wine industry in value within a few
years.
The offer relates to one cycle of American ginseng, due to be harvested before 30 September
2010. Ginseng takes seven years to grow to optimum size. The investment crop will be into its
third year later this year.
The issue aims to raise $12.2 million in subscriptions (minimum parcel $9500) for a special
partnership in Clean Green Ginseng Ltd.

being staged by Te Awamutu Intermediate School next Tuesday
until Thursday, 10 years and a

The action packed story
stars the Man of Steel himself

Olga and her motley henchmen.
Over 100 students, or more
than a quarter of the school,
is involved in acting, dancing,
singing, playing an instrument
or working on publicity or backstage for this major show.
It is being directed for the
second time by deputy principal
Jill Shaw, who is backed by an
experienced and enthusiastic
team of staff helpers.
As well as the three public
performances, the cast and
crew are providing two shows
for other schools and rest home
residents.

Waipa District Council has moved quickly
to get work going on
the
new
sewerage
scheme for Kihikihi.
Two
weeks
ago,
Council announced the
$12.6 million sewerage scheme was going
ahead.
The project will see
700 septic tanks connected to pipes which
will pump sewerage
from Kihikihi to the
new
Te
Awamutu
wastewater treatment
plant.
The project has been
welcomed by Kihikihi
residents who for years
have lived with poorly
performing
septic
tanks. Effluent from
some tanks has seeped
into ground and surface
water, raising health
issues and prompting
concern from Council
and public health officials.
This week, Council
appointed Vickie Byford as project administrator,
responsible
for direct liaison with
Kihikihi residents on
behalf of the Council.
She will work closely
with Council engineer Mark Woodward
who will be based at
Kihikihi full-time once
physical work on the
project begins.
Within
the
next
week, she will begin
visiting Kihikihi residents to smooth the
way for physical work
to begin. Ms Byford,
who has previously
worked in WaipaвЂ™s animal control unit, will

visits.
Chief executive John
Inglis said Council
staff were meeting
with the contractors for
the project this week to
start finalising a work
plan.
вЂњAs soon as we have
more detail about what
work is planned, weвЂ™ll

- one of the largest
undertaken by Council
in recent years. The
nature of the work
required means there
will inevitably be some
disruption. VickieвЂ™s role

so that disruption is

believe Kihikihi is getting sewerage when he
sees it.
And he has good
reason to be sceptical
about it.
He was told 50 years
ago that Kihikihi was
to get sewerage
вЂњI had a quiet chuckle
to myself after reading
last ThursdayвЂ™s Courier
feature on the reaction
to KihikihiвЂ™s sewerage
go ahead,вЂќ says McLiesh.
He recalls being an
apprentice for Leckie
and Singleton, assisting with the plumbing and drainage on
Mounseys Buildings in
Kihikihi when erected
HAROLD MCLIESH
in the 1950s.
The septic tank and
soak drainage holes
had to be dug by hand,
with the soak holes one
metre in diameter and
3-4 metres deep.
Once the holes were
too deep for the bigger men, McLiesh had
to get in there (being
the small apprentice)
with a garden fork and
small D-handled shovel
to finish the job off.
The soil was taken
out in a bucket on a
rope.
What amuses McLiesh was the council
plumbing and drainage
inspector, Fred Jenner
saying: вЂњThat will be
enough soakage - sewerage will be here in
five years.вЂќ
вЂњAnd theyвЂ™re still
waiting,вЂќ
quipped
McLiesh, who worked
for
Singleton
and
Hansen Plumbing (as
it is known nowadays)
for 33 years.

Mrs Reynolds addressed Te Awamutu
Business and Professional Women at their
monthly meeting.
She said the introduction two years ago
of a WomenвЂ™s Unit gave
Waikeria Prison a different perspective.
Women inmates are
often
unemployed,
many
have
been
abused at as children
and their standard of
education is low.
Some
left
their
homes at an early age
and donвЂ™t want their
own daughters to follow the same path.

Mrs Reynolds said
she had met many
talented and interesting women for whom
prison was not the
answer - rather it is a
community problem.
As far as staff matters were concerned
she said that recruiting
and retaining adequate
staff numbers was a
problem.
TodayвЂ™s prison officers were expected to be
a part of the rehabilitation process not just a
вЂ�warderвЂ™.
Mrs Reynolds said
that the Parole Board
met once a fortnight
and with family help,
decided whether the
inmate was ready to be
rehabilitated back into
the community.
If so, at the time of
release, a bank account
is set up, money for
accommodation
and
vouchers are given.
It is important that
support is there to help
inmates returning to
society to help themselves.

Bill Hodge, a Constitutional Lawyer from Auckland University.
He spoke on the implications of a change from
our present political system to that of a Republican one, which may come about within the next
decade. An attendance of over 80 members enjoyed a interesting an informative, instructional
and amusing speech followed by questions from
members.

Westies wonвЂ™t let seabed
mining in without fight
Proposed seabed mining off the west coast will
strike plenty of community opposition, judging
by the Kawhia public meeting hosted recently to
debate the issue.
Kawhia hosted members of the newly formed
environmental lobby group Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) to hear about the proposed
iron ore mine off the coast of Waitara and its possible impact on the Kawhia community.
More than 50 Kawhia residents were in attendance, along with a delegation from Taharoa and
two visitors who had driven up from Mokau to
attend the meeting.
The meeting began with the unveiling of
KASMвЂ™s brand new DVD presentation.

Fishing Club, also spoke about the impacts seabed mining could have on the coastal communi-
ties and in particular the recreational fishery.
Following the вЂ�formalвЂ™ part of the meeting, the
community asked questions and discussed the issue both as a whole and in individual groups.
Those in attendance were disbelieving that
a large scale seabed mine could be considered
when they, almost without exception, considered
that large scale environmental damage would
ensue.
The meeting was highly sceptical about the
comments made by Iron Ore New Zealand Ltd
that there is a deadzone between 20 and 60 metres depth of water, with a few stating that some
of the West CoastвЂ™s best fishing happens in these
depths.
Comments included the statement from a
Kawhia Harbour Protection Society spokesperson, who said that the Kawhia Harbour bar is
more than two kilometres from the mean high
tide mark so the proposed mine in Kawhia is not
really offshore.
More than half of those who attended the meeting joined KASM (paying $10 to sign up on the
spot) with at least one man making a reasonable
donation to KASM rather than just pay the $10.
Call to cut workplace carnage

with work related injuries suffer permanent impairment.
The estimated cost of death,
injury and illness caused by
occupational disease and injury
is between $4.3 billion and $8.7
billion a year,вЂќ the Hamilton

вЂњThe economic cost is incidental when we consider the
personal cost to families, workmates and communities who all

seriously ill or dies because of a

Te Awamutu Sports Waikeria sneaked home 98 against Nomads Too in their final match, while
Ohaupo (last yearвЂ™s champion team in Hamilton)
had no such problems dispatching JoyвЂ™s Hookers
16-1.
There will be considerable interest in the playoff - venue and date yet to be confirmed.
There was little in it when the two вЂ�finalistsвЂ™
met in round eight, TA Sports Waikeria winning
9-8. Their only loss was to Mitre 10 Arrows, 9-8,
in the penultimate round.
Arrows rallied magnificently to finish third outright after dropping three consecutive matches
early in the competition.
They beat Pirongia Hotel 10-7 in a final round
match which effectively decided third and fourth
placings.
In other matches, Rebels beat Raiders 16-1,
FBI accounted for Hobbits 13-4 and Stranglers

Greg Rewiti chalked up his first perfect score

national Taekwon-Do championships in Levin.
The Waikeria Hawk yellow
belt collected two bronze medals
in patterns and sparring.
It was a mighty achievement.
He only took up the martial art
in August last year.

An intercept try to former All Black Keith Lowen proved a killer blow to Ecolab Te Awamutu
Sports in their 26-23 loss to Hautapu on Saturday.
The intercept could not have come at a worse
time for Te Awamutu Sports in the Waikato premier rugby game at Cambridge on Saturday.
They had just scored to hit the lead, 16-14, after
Hautapu had led 14-9 at halftime.
Sports were hot on attack when the pass was
intercepted.
Left wing Ryan Meacheam chased Lowen down,
catching him just short of the line but unable to
prevent the try.
Hautapu were in again out wide a few minutes
later, extending their lead to 26-16.
With 15 minutes remaining, Sports went on
the attack.
They pinned Hautapu down in their half with
kicks into the corners from halfback Luke Parsons and first five Tangohau.
After a series of driving mauls, the ball went
wide to fullback Hamish Stewart, who broke a
tackle in midfield to score.
Tangohau converted.
Trailing by three points with as many minutes
to go, Sports threw everything at the home team
but their defence held.
Peter Bain reports that both sides put in some
big efforts on defence in the wet вЂ�very heavy underfootвЂ™ conditions.
The scrum had the better of their opponents,
often having the Hautapu pack going backwards.
Sports started strongly, applying pressure with
a series of driving mauls up the middle of the
park.
Hautapu infringed and Waylon Tangohau converted the first of his three penalties.
Hautapu replied in kind, driving Sports back
into their half and breaking the defence to score
for a 7-3 lead.
A Tangohau penalty reduced the deficit to 7-6.
Sports gifted Hautapu their next points when a
clearing kick near the corner was charged down
and the try scored.
The conversion was successful and Hautapu
were out to a 14-6 lead.
Tangohau had the last say of the first half,
landing a penalty.
Sports made a hash of things knocking on from
the kickoff to the second half.
They dug deep with some big defence from both
backs and forwards to keep Hautapu out and
forced a turnover.
The visitors took play into opposition territory
and strung together several phases.

Te Awamutu Sports Stags turned a 5-0 halftime deficit into a 10-5 win over Te Rapa to clinch
second place in the first round competition.
Sustained pressure and good ball retention
through several phases was eventually rewarded
with a try under the posts to the Stags which was
converted. A penalty to the Stags in front of the
posts near fulltime completed the scoring.

commemorate

tragic events of July 10,

Rainbow Warrior benefit concert performed in

chorus is holding a free
Open Night on Monday,
July 11 to attract quality new voices of all
ages from teenagers

Rivertones won a New
Zealand gold medal in
2001 and represented
the country in world
championships
in
Nashville, Tennessee
in 2002.
Members come from
all over the central
North Island to practice each Monday night,
and singers come from
as far as Tauranga
and the King Country.
The Open Night will
introduce women to
four part harmony
singing, and is followed
by a series of free vocal
lessons and trial membership for women who
like what they hear
and want to sing with
the best.
The Open Night
- to be held at Marian School hall, Clyde
Street in Hamilton
from 7pm - will include all the elements
of a usual Rivertones
rehearsal night - physical warm-ups to music,
vocal exercises and
plenty of singing from
the chorus as well as
