Novelist Shusaku Endo（1923-1996）was a university student when he saw film actress ⑴ Setsuko

But unfortunately, the group made news headlines for a harrowing incident that occurred on May
25. A man having a hand saw

at two members of the group during a ＂handshaking with
fans＂ event in Takizawa, Iwate Prefecture.
The organizers said such events are ⑸ vital to promoting the group＇s image as ＂idols you can
meet in person.＂ But making them too accessible seems to have
＊backfired
in this case.
Precaution and strict security checks, stemming from the ＂don＇t trust anyone＂ mentality, are
standard in the world today.
I have never shaken hands with a showbiz idol, but this passage from the novel ＂Botchan＂ by
Natsume Soseki（1867-1916）comes to mind: ＂It felt as if I held in my palm a crystal ball that had
been warmed in sweet perfume.＂ This is the scene where the main character sets eyes on ＂Madonna.＂
⑹ I wonder if this is the feeling fans get when they shake hands with their idols.
⑺ Despite criticisms about the manner in which AKB48 is promoted, every handshaking event
has added to the group＇s popularity. But the latest attack has shocked society

and is
impacting other pop groups, as well. Will this incident cause idols to return to ＂sheltered princesses＂
