Congratulations to those who have come of age! 明けましておもでとうございます！そし て新成人の方におめでとうございます！ My name is Greta Coll. I am the Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) working at the Okagaki Town Office. 私の名前はグレタ・コールです。岡垣町 役場で勤める国際交流員（CIR）です。 I am from Canberra City in Australia. In Australia, we come of age at 18 years old. 私はオーストラリアのキャンベラ市から 来ました。オーストラリアでは、１８歳 で成人になります。 So if you lived in Australia you would have been an adult for two years already. 皆さんがオーストラリアで生まれていた なら、２年前に大人になっていましたね。 Many of you☆ who are coming of age this year have been living in Okagaki Town for twenty years. 今年、ご成人を迎えた皆さんのほとんど は岡垣町で２０年間住んでいることでし ょう。 I have only been living here for five months, however in that time ☆ I have discovered many of Okagaki’s charms. 私はわずか５カ月しか住んでいません が、その間に岡垣町の魅力を色々発見し ました。 For example there is beautiful nature and kind-hearted townspeople. 例えば、岡垣町のきれいな自然と人々の 優しい心です。 I think that Okagaki town is the kind of town that you can feel proud wherever you go as adults. 皆さんが大人になり、どこへ行っても岡 垣町は誇りに思えるような町だと思いま す。 第一面の初級記事 の文法をここで説明 するよ ☆Beginners Article Grammar☆ ☆In that time 和訳：その間に 例文：In that time I managed to undo the knot その間に結び目をほどくことがで きた ポイント：At that time は「その時に」とい う意味になります ☆Many of you 和訳：君たちのほとんど 例文：as many of you know… ほとんどの人はご存じのように、 Phrase of the month ~ 今月の英語表現 ~ Come of age 成人に達する 例文: In most Western countries young people come of age at 18. 西洋のほとんどの国では若者は１８歳で成人になる。 Intermediate Article ~中級記事 ~ Coming of age in Australia Coming of Age in Australia, New Zealand and England is celebrated at 18 years of age. In Australia, legally 18 year olds are allowed to drink alcohol, vote and purchase Tabaco. There is no coming of age day or ceremony. We celebrate the coming of age on each new adult’s birthday by throwing a big party☆ and inviting friends and family. Usually a large birthday cake and lots of alcohol for the 18 year olds to try are prepared. At some parties, the birthday person☆ is made to drink a full cup of beer out of a ‘Yard glass’ which is a meter deep glass. There is also a custom for family members to make an embarrassing slide show of baby photos and for best friends to give a speech about embarrassing things you have done. オーストラリア、ニュージーランドやイギリ スの成人の祝いは１８歳で行います。 オーストラリアでは、１８歳の人は法律 的にお酒を飲むことも、タバコを買うこと も、選挙で投票することも許されていま す。 成人の日や式はありません。成人を迎 えたことを新成人それぞれの誕生日に 家族や友人を誘って、大きなパーティ ーを開くことで祝います。 多くの場合、大きなケーキや１８歳にな った人が試すためのお酒がたくさん用 意されます。 あるパーティーでは誕生日を迎えた人 が「ヤードグラス」という１メートルの深さ のグラスでビール一杯を飲まされます。 家族が赤ちゃんの時の写真を入れて作 った恥ずかしいスライドショーを見せ、恥 ずかしいことをしたときの話をまとめて友 人がスピーチをする習慣もあります。 Photo of the month ~今月の写真~ This photo is of the Okagaki town coming of age ceremony last year. Jewish people celebrate coming of age at 13 and 14 years old. Coming of age means they are responsible for following the Jewish Law. When Amish people turn 16, they are allowed to☆ try modern things like alcohol and modern clothes which are usually forbidden. This tradition is called ‘Rumspringa’ and the purpose of it is to allow Amish children to decide if they would like to continue living in the Amish community. In America, a person’s 16th birthday is called their ‘sweet 16th’ and is celebrated with a big party. 16 is the age when children are allowed to drive. When Muslim girls turn 11 in Malaysia they have a ceremony in their local mosque in which they must recite the last chapter of the Koran. Though they celebrate in different ways, it is clear that coming of age ceremonies are an important tradition to many people. Amish girls celebrate ‘Rumspinga’ 世界の様々な文化や宗教によって成人 になることの祝い方が色々あります。 ユダヤ人は１３歳や１４歳で成人を祝い ます。成人になるということはユダヤ法を 自ら従わないといけないということです。 アーミッシュの人々は１６歳になると、ア ルコールや現代の服など、通常は禁じら れている現代的なことを試すことが許さ れています。この習慣は「ラムスプリン ガ」と呼ばれており、アーミッシュの子ども にアーミッシュのコミュニティで生活続け たいかどうかを自ら決めさせるために行 われています。 アメリカでは、１６歳の誕生日は「スウィー トシックスティーン」と呼ばれており、大き なパーティーで祝っています。１６歳は運 転が許される年齢です。 マレーシアではイスラム教の女子が１１ 歳になると、近所のモスクでコーランの最 後の章を覚え、読み上げる式がありま す。 それぞれの祝い方が異なりますが、たく さんの人々にとって成人式は大切な習 慣というのは明らかです。 ☆Advanced Article Grammar☆ ☆Around the world 和訳：世界中の、世界一周、世間に 例文：Used widely around the world 世間に広く使われる A trip around the world 世界一周旅行 ☆Allowed （過去分詞形動詞） Allow（現在形） 和訳：許す、許可する、させる 例文：I cannot allow you to behave like that 君にそんなふるまいをさせておくわけにはいか ない The money allowed him to go abroad そのお金で彼は外国へ行くことができた 上級記事の文法を ここで説明するよ About the CIR’s work ~国際交流員の活動について~ The CIR at Okagaki Town Hall performs a variety of activities including teaching English at the information Plaza, visiting preschools, writing a monthly article for the town bulletin and organizing cultural events. 情報プラザで英会話を教えた り、保育所に訪問したり、広報 の記事を書いたり、国際交流事 業を企画したりするなど、岡垣 町役場で勤める国際交流員は 様々な活動を行っています。 Every year the CIR holds cultural events such as the Christmas pot luck party, cooking classes and parent and child book readings. 国際交流事業として毎年クリス マスのポットラックパーティー や料理教室、親子の読み聞かせ 教室など実施しています。 This year I would like to hold events such as an Australian painting class, an international comedy event and an Australian beach party. 今年も、オーストリラリア風の 絵画教室、国際コメディーイベ ント、オーストラリアンビーチ パーティなど、様々なイベント を企画していきたいです。 If you are interested in cultural events please read this bulletin and take note of the events news published here.
