The Chargers scored a run in the sixth when White walked and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Shelton. Blake drove in the final Middlesex run with a single in the seventh. MHS girls down Pointers by Tom Chillemi The Middlesex High School varsity split a pair of Conference 42 softball games, defeating West Point 6-4 on Tuesday, and losing 4-0 at Mathews. On Friday, good defensive plays by the Lady Chargers kept Mathews within reach. Alert catcher Avis Keeling snagged a foul tip and caught a Mathews runner who had taken a big lead off first base. Keeling fired the ball to first baseman Tambria Wake. Wake and second baseman Olivia Major got the runner in a rundown and pitcher Kaitlyn Weber made the diving tag to finish the play. Quinlan Moore had a pair of fine catches in center field. Third baseman Zariah Freeze turned in three good defensive plays. At the plate, Moore collected three sharp singles. Austen Taylor Dozier and Keeling both singled. On Tuesday at West Point the Lady Chargers prevailed in another nailbiter 6-4. Middlesex took a 3-run lead in the top of the third inning. West Point came back in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 lead. The Lady Chargers rallied in the top of the seventh with 3 runs. Moore’s second triple of the game scored Dozier to tie the game. Moore (See Softball, page B10) Record crowd sees nine different winners in 10 races at speedway A record-breaking crowd at Virginia Motor Speedway was treated to some outstanding racing on Saturday night with nine different winners in 10 features during Truckin Thunder Scout Night presented by the Virginia Army National Guard. Visiting victory lane were Justin Williams and Jared Powell (Victory Lap Late Models), Mark Parks and Tyler Bare (Aaron’s Pro Late Models), Matt Quade and Mike Reynolds (Budweiser Modifieds), and Brian Bradley and Brandon Sandridge (Collision One Limited Stocks). Hunter Shelton won both Truckin Thunder Sportsman features. Both Victory Lap Late Model Twins were exciting. In the first 15-lapper Jared Powell and Billy Hubbard led the field to green with Hubbard taking the lead out of turn 2. On lap seven Troy Williams took over the lead with Justin Williams in tow. With T. Williams on the bottom and J. Williams up on the cushion, the two battled nearly door to door for the next two laps before J. Williams rocketed to the lead. J. Williams held off a final challenge from T. Williams with two laps left to score the win. In the second feature for the Victory Lap Late Models, Powell and John Staton led the field to green, and this time Powell took the top spot and pulled to a three-car advantage on the field. It took eighth-starting Justin Williams to use the cushion again to make his way to second. Once in the runner-up spot he began putting pressure on Powell for the lead. With two laps to go, J. Williams pulled to the outside of Powell in turn 1 only to have the door shut. J. Williams would not give up and rode the cushion in turns 3 and 4 to pull even as the two came to the white flag. The two raced side by side all the way back to the checkers with Powell holding on at the line by .048 of a second. In the Aaron’s Pro Late Models Neal Hudgins and David Puckett led the field to green with it going four wide into turn 2. When the smoke cleared it was Hudgins with the lead. His run at the front was short lived as third generation driver Tyler Bare took the lead on lap 2. Bare looked to be in control with Daniel Baggerly, Mark Parks, Bobby Thompson all within striking distance. Coming out of turn 4 Bare’s ride pushed up the track allowing Parks to get by and go on for the win with Thompson on his bumper for second. In the second feature for the Aaron’s Pro Late Models, Bare and Baggerly led the field to green with Bare taking the lead out of turn 2. Bare led flag to flag but would have to hold off a late charge by Baggerly to take his first career win at Virginia Motor Speedway. In qualifying Baggerly set a new division track record with a lap of 18.488 seconds breaking his weekold mark. The honor of bearing the college mace in the procession has been awarded to Robert Griffin, academic dean of RCC’s Glenns Campus. The NNFB is the first rural food bank in the state of Virginia, and one which is considered a model organization. He is often called upon for advisory assistance to similar organizations across the United States. Barton came to the Northern Neck from Kansas City, Missouri, in 2002. His original intention was to stay only a few weeks. “I have lived in many places, but this is the first area that I have called home,” he said. As chair of Compassionate Ministries at the White Stone Church of the Nazarene in Lancaster County, he oversaw the church’s food and clothing pantries for six years. In 2010 he started the Northern Neck Food Bank, using a pick-up truck to assist area food pantry leaders in transporting food from the Central Virginia Food Bank in Richmond. Partnerships with local farmers have made it possible for NNFB to provide fresh produce not only to the immediate area, but to food banks across eastern Virginia. Barton lives with his wife and daughter at Wicomico Church in Northumberland County. By bearing the college mace at Commencement 2014, Dean Robert Griffin joins a distinguished group of individuals who have been singled out over RCC’s 44-year history as outstanding examples of service in administration of justice from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition, he did post-master’s coursework in higher education at North Carolina State University and the College of William and Mary, and attended the North Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. His career includes experience as a high school social studies teacher, a probation and parole officer, a criminal justice instructor, and head of programs at two other community colleges. He has been a trainer at police academies, as well as providing training at local, state, federal, and military corLance Barton rectional facilities. At RCC, Griffin has taught administration of justice courses, and many sections of the required “College Success Skills.” He hopes to continue teaching after his retirement as an adjunct faculty member. His up-to-the-minute teaching skills are evidenced by his recent success in completing the “Instructional Design for Online Learning” course. A native of Louisburg, North Carolina, Griffin lives with his wife in upper Gloucester County. His spare-time interests include cars, travel, “tech gadgets,” and reading autobiographies. Box 276, Heathsville, Va. 22473 May 8, 2014 • Southside Sentinel • Urbanna, Va.• B5 ‘God’s Trombones’ to feature old-time African-American preaching and music Off-Broadway production is Saturday at St. Clare Walker by Tom Hardin Ready for some good old-time African-American revival preaching and music similar to what was popular in the 1920s? If so, St. Clare Walker Middle School on Route 33 at Locust Hill is the place you want to be on Saturday, May 10. The Promise Academy, in association with Shiloh Baptist Church and James Pettis Productions, will present the renowned Off-Broadway play “God’s Trombones” in the school auditorium. There will be two shows—at 1 and 4 p.m. “God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse” is a 1927 book of poems by James Weldon Johnson patterned after traditional AfricanAmerican religious oratory. The book is comprised of seven poems, which are presented onstage as seven sermons. In Saturday’s production, during each sermon local actors will be on stage to pantomime and add emphasis to the focus of the sermon. When each sermon ends, Laymetha Reed Guy and “The Sounds of Rapture” will perform an old spiritual song that adds even more emphasis to the sermon’s message. “This show is about the voices of old-time preachers that author James Weldon Johnson heard in his youth,” said show director James Pettis. “The sound reminded him of the sound of trombones. “The preachers in the show will assume the old-time roles and voices of these revival preachers and get the audience involved emotionally,” said Pettis. “The music and actors will add even more emotion to the production.” The book’s poems to be presented as sermons in verse include: • “Listen, Lord-A Prayer,” an invocation presented by Rev. Alvin L. Hill Jr. of Christ Church Parish. • “The Creation,” a retelling of the creation story of the Bible, presented by Prophetess Marilyn Carter of CMC Worldwide Ministries of Warsaw. • “The Prodigal Son” from the Biblical parable of the prodigal son, presented by Rev. Paul Pleasants of Calvary Baptist Church of Christchurch. • “Go Down Death-A Funeral Sermon,” in which Jesus is depicted as sending his servant, Death, to bring to heaven a weary woman who is old and ready to die so that she can rest, presented by Dr. Griselda Bayton of Angel Visit Baptist Church of Dunnsville. • “Noah Built the Ark,” a retelling of the Biblical stories of Adam and Eve, a story of how sin entered the world, and of Noah and the Great Flood sent to cleanse the earth, presented by Dr. Michael Bryant of Shiloh Baptist Church of Reedville. • “The Crucifixion,” telling the story of Jesus’ crucifixion, presented by Apostle Carroll Carter of CMC Worldwide Ministries of Warsaw. • “Let My People Go,” telling the Biblical story of Moses and his work freeing the Hebrew slaves from Egypt, which has often been the basis of comparisons to the AfricanAmerican slavery experience in the United States, presented by Rev. Woodland Holmes of First Baptist Church Harmony Village. • “The Judgment Day,” the prophetic story of the Apocalypse, presented by Dr. Anthony Nutt of Union Grove Baptist Church of South Chesterfield County. “The sermons give the audience a wonderful dramatization of interpreting the Bible (IV]LHYL[OLÄYZ[NYHK\H[LZVM;OL7YVTPZL(JHKLT`*SHZZVMHSVUN^P[OHJHKLT`MV\UKLYHUK4PKKSLZL_UH[P]L 3H`TL[OH9LLK.\`YKMYVTSLM[HK\S[HZZPZ[HU[Z+LHJVU)LY[PUH>PSZVUMHYSLM[)LZZPL9PJOUKMYVTSLM[+PYL[OPH;OVYU[VUMHYYPNO[HUK1V`JL3LLUKMYVTYPNO[HUK:[LSSHY(^HYKUVTPUH[LKNVZWLS[LLUZPUNLY5`HZPH[O MYVTSLM[9LLK.\`^PSSWYVK\JL[OPZ:H[\YKH`»ZWLYMVYTHUJLVM¸.VK»Z;YVTIVULZ¹HUKHSZVZPUN^P[O¸;OL:V\UKZVM 9HW[\YL¹K\YPUN[OLWYVK\J[PVU5`HZPH^PSSZPUNK\YPUN[OLWSH`HUKH[PU[LYTPZZPVU(KTPZZPVUPZHUK[PJRL[Z^PSS be sold at the door. from Genesis to Revelation,” said Pettis. “The preaching will be emotional and the singing will bring even greater emotion to the stage,” said Reed Guy. Pettis has directed 70 productions of “God’s Trombones” across the country over the past 31 years. Reed Guy has been in four productions, but this is the first one she has produced. “This is something new for Middlesex and I’m hoping for a large audience to be there Saturday and give its support,” said Reed Guy. The show’s praise dancers include Cynthia Beverley and the Calvary Baptist Church Praise Dance Team, and the Shiloh Baptist Church Youth Praise Dance Team. The actors include James M. It looks like Virginia is taking a page from our northeastern states and making winter last longer, which is going to make summer shorter this year. It is time to pull the tulips out and put them either in storage or transplant them. The squirrels are watching so maybe chicken wire would be a good idea to put in the ground around them. Do not have any hints on keeping the voles from eating them. Voles must have a purpose other than being an attraction for the Corgwyn. Often when gardening I wonder if other people have holes and mounds of dirt where their dogs have dug, or if everyone but me has well-trained pets. Oh yes, the voles eat the grubs in the earth that turn into Japanese beetles. Trying to be a good steward of the bay means not using poisons or fertilizers that can harm the bay. We found a black snake this week in the bushes. It was about three feet or so long. Thinking of positive reasons not to kill it resulted in agreeing we would not have mice under the house. It escaped through the air vents under the house. Bluebird houses should be up and being used by now. We put ours up Sunday and it looks like Rube Goldberg designed it. There is a stove pipe with wire inside to keep raccoons and snakes from crawling up to the bird house, and it is on a pipe driven into the ground, which is sand and clay that amounts to concrete, so it is not very far into the ground and tilts a little, but bricks are piled up around the base of the pipe. It is going to be like the cradle in the tree, “When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.” The ospreys are setting on their nest in the front of the house. Think about it. How many people can stand in their home talking to someone on the phone and watch an osprey fly by with a fish in its talons? Or watch a heron waiting patiently for a fish in the shallows of the creek? We are so blessed that we can take the time to be part of nature. Birthdays have been celebrated earlier this week by William Benjamin Walker, Maxine Higgason, Chuck Wall and Sandy Woolard. Betty and Les Hockman celebrate their anniversary on Monday. Today is Austin Martin and Christian Hensley’s birthdays. Tomorrow Angela Walton and on Saturday Acoline Harris will celebrate birthdays. Happy days to all. It is hard to believe Café By The Bay has been around for four years this week. Susan and Debbie work hard to provide breakfast for those who start out their day early, whether working or fishing. They graciously provide WiFi and lunch for boaters, workers and ladies of leisure. Seven days a week can be a bit much, so they close at 3p.m. every day. Don’t forget to do something for the dogs that Rick, our animal warden, has picked up and taken to the Middlesex County Animal Shelter at Cooks Corner. A few dollars for the fence around the dog park or for medical care or a bag of dog food all go a long way toward caring for the animals. Perhaps you are looking for a pet to love, or to be loved by a pet that will show gratitude for the rest of his life. This week I passed a gentleman walking a hound dog or maybe that was the other way around, but it was a “smiling moment.” The man was smiling and the hound’s tail was wagging, and then I was smiling. “People who care about each other take care of one another. It’s not a duty, it’s a pleasure.” Fair winds. rescue rx TAPPAHANNOCK, VA THIS HOME ON 6 ACRES FOR ONLY $169,775. HURRY! THIS DEAL :21·7/$67 804-443-0710 • 1267 TAPPAHANNOCK BLVD. Is the person’s smile uneven? • Arm weakness—Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • Speech difficulty—Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? • Time to call 911—If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get the person to the hospital immediately. Wish-A-Fish will be held Saturday, August 16, at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park in Deltaville. It is a chance for special needs children to have a funfilled day that includes activities, fishing trip (with a volunteer fishing-buddy), lunch, and special guests that will interact with the children. A report on this project will be provided at the May 15 MPIP meeting. The LINK is a Lancaster/ Northumberland organization that brings together churches, Social Services, and other groups and organizations with a mission of helping families and individuals in crisis. The LINK verifies the need and then contacts member organizations to solicit assistance. This avoids duplication and also works with clients to develop a pro-active plan to resolve problems in the future. An MPIP committee is working on implementing such a program in Middlesex and its report will be given. As always, everyone is invited to attend. We end our meetings with a time for you to make general announcements of an upcoming activity your organization has, or a concern/ need you may have with which another group present may be able to help. The 4-H shooting education program uses shooting as a vehicle to help young people ages 9 to 19 develop life skills such as discipline, responsibility, and leadership. Middlesex 4-H is looking for adult volunteers who would be interested in working with youth to teach them the disciplines of the 4-H shooting areas—archery, pistol, muzzleloading, rifle, and shotgun. Through these disciplines, youth learn firearm safety and basic marksmanship fundamentals. There will be an informational meeting about leader responsibilities and requirements for shooting sports adult volunteers on Monday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cooks Corner Office Complex on Route 33, two miles east of Saluda. Anyone interested in being involved with the Middlesex County 4-H Shooting Education Club is welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Wake was plated by Freeze’s fielders choice to make it 6-4 Lady Chargers. With 2 outs, Rachel Howard tripled but was left stranded. Freeze also tripled and singled. Dozier had 2 singles. Shelby Lewter and Olivia Major also singled. In the fifth inning, the Lady Chargers turned a double play when Freeze threw to the catcher Keeling who tagged out a West Point runner trying to score. Keeling then threw to first base too late to get the batter. But Wake alertly spied the runner trying to advance to third base and threw to Freeze in time to tag out the hard-sliding runner.
