In a Restaurant 13 Expressional Errors よくある表現の間違い 1 「5 人です」が「5 歳です」に We We are five. are a party of five. / There are five of us. 5 人です。 We are five. だと「私たちは 5 歳です」という意味になってしまう。レストランなどで「5 名です」 という場合には，We are a party of five. または There are five of us. と表現する。 2 have to だとクレームになってしまう How How long do we have to wait? long is the wait? 待ち時間はどれくらいですか。 How long do we have to wait? は英語として誤りのない文であるが，「どれだけ待たなければならな いんだ！」のようなクレームに聞こえてしまう可能性もある。普通に待ち時間を尋ねる場合には名詞 の wait を使って，How long is the wait? または How long will the wait be? のように言う。 3 「嫌い」は丁寧に I’m I’m sorry, I don’t like fish. sorry, I don’t really care for fish. すみません。魚はあまり好きではありません。 don’t like（…は好きではない）は日本人がよく使うが，状況によっては don’t like（嫌い）というの はあまり丁寧な言い方ではない。丁寧に自分が好まないことを表現したり，相手からの申し出を断っ たりする場合には，I don’t (really) care for . . . と言うのがよい。 4 cheap は「安っぽい」 This This dish is cheap. dish is reasonable. この料理は高くない。 cheap は「安い」と言う意味であるが，否定的に「（質が）安っぽい」という意味もある。よって「（値 段が）高くない」という場合は，reasonable または inexpensive（expensive の反意語）を使うのが より丁寧な表現である。 5 「空いている」は empty ではない Excuse Excuse me, but is this seat empty? me, but is this seat taken? すみませんが，この席は空いていますか。 empty は基本的に「（中身が）空の」という意味である。よって，This seat is empty. だと「シートの 中身が空（クッションなどが入っていない） 」の意味になってしまう。 「空いていますか」という意味 では Is this seat taken? と言う。 1 14 Unit 3 Grammatical Errors よくある文法の間違い 6 a chicken は丸ごと 1 羽 I’d I’d like a chicken, please. like chicken, please. チキンをお願いします。 chicken は a chicken と冠詞がつけば「1 羽のニワトリ」，無冠詞では「チキン，鶏肉」という意味になる。 このように冠詞の有無で意味が異なる単語には，glass（ガラス）と a glass（グラス） ，wood（木材） と a wood（森） ，paper（紙）と a paper（新聞，書類） ，room（空間）と a room（部屋）などがある。 7 a wine は「グラス 1 杯」？「ボトル 1 本」？ Can Can I have a red wine, please? I have a glass/bottle of red wine, please? 赤ワインを（ボトルで，グラスで）お願いできますか。 wine は数えられない物質名詞なので，「ひとつの…，1 杯の…」を表すときは数量詞（e.g. a glass of . . . / a bottle of . . .）が必要である。なお，文脈で数量詞が明白な場合は，省略して言うこともできる。 e.g. Can I have two beers, please?（two beers が two glasses of beer であることが明白な場合） 8 英語では数えない「スタッフ」 There are few staffs in the restaurant The restaurant has a small staff. このレストランはスタッフが少ない。 staff は集合名詞であるため，複数形にすることはできない。集合なので多少（few/many）ではなく family（家族），audience（聴衆）などがある。 大小（small/large）で表す。このような集合名詞には、 Japanese English 日本人のおかしな英語 9 「サービス」は無料ではない This This dessert is service. dessert is on the house. このデザートはサービスです。 service は「接客」の意味である。よって，The restaurant gives courteous service.（そのレストランは 客への対応が丁寧である）のように言うのが一般的である。日本語の「サービス」には「無料の」という 意味があるので，この場合は on the house（店のおごりで）または complimentary（無料の）と言う。 10 moody は「憂鬱」 This This place is moody. place has a nice atmosphere. この店は雰囲気がよい。 日本語の「ムーディー」は「雰囲気のよい」という肯定的な意味であるが， 英語の moody は「憂鬱な， 気分屋の」 という否定的な意味である。 「雰囲気のよい」 は have a nice atmosphere（よい雰囲気がある） と表現する。 In a Restaurant 15 Exercise A-1 Choose the right words 1.
