Launched in the French port city of Nantes, La Folle Journée (LFJ) is a classical
music festival that has revolutionized the European music scene. The festival’s name in
French literally means “the follies of a day” or “crazy day”.
For those who avoid classical music as being “too expensive, too long and having
too high a threshold” – come and experience this wonderful event first-hand! Share
in the joy of music with people of all generations! This groundbreaking concept from
which LFJ was born has spread throughout the world, and as of 2013, the festival is
held in 8 cities through 4 countries.

● Over 1500 musicians gather from around the world to simultaneously
give concerts from early morning till late at night in numerous halls
of various sizes.
● The “democratization” of classical music! From orchestras
to chamber music – enjoy performances by the world’s most
prestigious musicians at exceptionally low rates.
● Freedom to go concert hopping, with each performance only lasting
about 45 minutes.
● A fun day out with friends or the entire family, with opportunities to
participate in many free concerts, kids’ programs and master classes.
● During the event, the entire town is filled with music and feels
festive.
● With each year focusing on a theme, have fun expanding your

René Martin (LFJ Artistic Director)
A formidable music producer from France, René Martin is
involved in organizing some 1550 concerts around the world each
year.
Having been an ardent jazz and rock fan during his youth,
Martin discovered classical music in his teen years. After studying
business administration and music, he established the Centre for
Artistic Research and Creation (CREA) in Nantes, and is currently
its Artistic Director.
In 1981, Martin established the International Piano Festival in
La Roque d’Anthéron in southern France, which invites leading
pianists including Lupu, Argerich, Kissin and Makoto Ozone. He
was asked by Richter in 1988 to organize the Festival de la Grange
de Meslay in the Touraine region, and also offers advice for the
December Nights Festival in Moscow. He created La Folle Journée
in Nantes, in 1995.
