The view of the fresh spring greenery and the colorful autumn leaves of as seen from behind the falling waters is especially impressive. The Chodo no Kashira can be seen in the center of the Ura-myogi Mountain Range range, along with the Akaiwa and Eboshi-iwa to the west. Construction on this red brick building was completed in 1912 and serves today to keep us in touch with the glorious history of railroads in Japan. This is a theme park to study history of the railway that crosses the Usui Pass. Visitors can examine steam locomotives from the now-defunct Japan National Railway on the grounds. The Abt system (rack) railway that crossed the Usui Pass was constructed in 1893. Maruyama Substation 国鉄が全国で初めて建設した変電 所。明治45年（1912）に建てられ た純レンガ造りの建物は、鉄道の 歴史を今に伝えています。 信越本線アプト式鉄道時代の廃線跡の約 ５㎞（横川駅からめがね橋の間）を遊歩道 として整備し、 碓氷峠の自然とめがね橋を はじめとする鉄道遺産にふれることがで きます。 Abt no michi (Walking trail) 旧丸山変電所 アプトの道 （遊歩道） H i s t o r y This brick bridge, with its 4 large arches that gives it a unique appearance similar to a pair of eyeglasses, was completed in 1892 and is preserved today as a legacy to modern construction. Megane-bashi This is a reproduction of a apartment house of the domain lords of the old Annaka clan. Visitors can get a feeling for how life may have been during the Edo period in this area. The old Annaka-han Buke Nagaya 郡奉行役宅と道をはさんで武家屋敷が復元されていま す。茅葺きの長屋が並んだ敷地内には井戸も掘られ、往 時の暮らしぶりを偲ぶことができます。 旧安中藩武家長屋 It is established in 1623 by Tokugawa Shogunate to check for weapons to be brought in and for pople to go out. The remain of Usui Seki-sho 1623年に徳川幕府により現在地に移設され、明治2年 に廃関されるまで、関東入国の関門として「入鉄砲と出 女」を監視しました。復元された関所跡には関所資料館 も建てられ当時の資料が展示されています。安政遠足 が行われる日には碓氷関所まつりが開催されます。 碓氷関所跡 Niijima Jo, the founder of the Doshisha University, was born in the Kamiyashiki residential complex of the Annaka Clan in Edo (now Tokyo). When Niijima was 21, he went to the United States to learn. As a result of the Meiji Restoration the representatives from the Annaka Clan moved from Tokyo back to their domain in Annaka where they constructed 4 individual dwelling places and 12 apartments in the district now called Shintei (New Residence). Niijima Jo Family Home 同志社大学設立の祖、新島襄は安中藩江戸上屋敷の生 まれ。21歳のときに函館よりひそかにアメリカに渡りま した。 明治維新により江戸詰めの藩士が安中に引きあげ る際、藩士のために一軒屋４棟、長屋12棟を建てたこと が、 「新邸」 の地名の由来です。 新島襄旧宅 Throughout the years of entertaining emperors and nobles, this house has been managed by a number of famous restaurateurs. The two neighboring buildings are called “Onishi” and “Ohigashi”. The trees are said to be between 300 and 400 years old. The remains of the Usui Company Headquarters 明治38年に建てられた近代和風の代表的建物で す。基本的には和風ですが、窓ガラスはフランス製の 板ガラスを用いるなど洋風の材料・技術を各所に採 用しています。 旧碓氷社本社事務所 This building was constructed in 1911, and is open to the public as a sample of architecture of the times and as an archive dealing with the history of our local autonomy. The remains of the Usui Magistrate’s office 明治11年に「郡区編成法」により碓氷郡役所が開庁 しました。現存する建物は明治44年に建てられたも のです。郡役所廃止後は農業会などが使用していま した。 現在は、 地方自治の歴史を示す貴重な建物とし て改修され、一般公開されています。 旧碓氷郡役所 This church was the first church of its kind constructed entirely by Japanese craftsmen in1878. The stained glass in the chapel has been maintained in its original condition. United Church of Christ in Japan, Annaka Church 日本キリスト教団安中教会 明治11年に日本人の手によって創立された日本初 の教会です。大正８年、教会創立の中心になった新島 襄召天30年を記念して新島襄記念会堂が建てられ ました。内部の礼拝堂にはステンドグラスが当時の まま現存しています。 This building is a reproduction of the Annaka Regional Magistrate’s residence. The structural style of the main building is called “magari-ya”. According to accounts written Princess Kazunomiya, a sister of Emperor Komyo, styaed at this guesthouse on the way to Edo to marry into the Tokugawa Shogun. JR信越本線 The remains of the Annaka-han Koribugyo Residence The remains of the Itahana Honjin 板鼻宿には光明天皇の妹・和宮が宿泊した部屋が 残されています。幕末、公武合体のために徳川家に 嫁ぐため中山道で江戸に向かった和宮が宿泊した のです。 部屋には当時の資料が展示されています。 旧安中藩郡奉行役宅 五料の代々名主を務めた旧家・中島家で、 諸大名や公家の休息所となっていま した。 「お西」 と 「お東」 と呼ばれる二つの切妻造りの建物が隣り合っています。 いずれも県史跡に指定され、 往時のままに復元されて一般公開されています。 五料茶屋本陣 旧安中藩郡奉行役宅 徳川家譜代の大名が統治していた安中城。その名残 として城内の大名小路沿いには旧安中藩郡奉行役 宅が復元されています。母屋の造りは曲がり屋と呼 ばれ、公的空間と私的空間が区別されています。 板鼻本陣跡（皇女和宮御宿泊所） JR信越本線 4 めがね橋 明治25年に完成した煉瓦造り4連 アーチ式の鉄道橋で、近代化遺産 として保存されています。 緑に映え る赤い煉瓦のアーチが美しく、 多く の人を魅了しています。 撮影スポッ トとしても最適です。 旧街道の面影 5 6 F 安中 美しき郷 l o w e r s 2 桜 山吹 10 11 ロウバイ 12 ろうばいの郷には3.2haの敷地に約1200株、 12,000本が あり、 12月下旬から２月中旬、 透明感のある蝋細工(ろうざい く)のような梅に似た花を咲かせます。 満開になるとあたり一 面に甘い香りを漂わせます。 Robai In Robai-no-Sato park, about 12,000 “robai” (Winter sweet) trees bloom from late December to late February over an area of 3.2 ha. Cherry Trees of the Gokan Joshi Koen This park also has a reproduction of a defense tower. Visitors can enjoy the Gokan Castle Site Park Festival when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in April. ロウバイ At the Kanbai park in Akima Bairin (Akima Plum Forest) about 2,000 winter Irises, poppies covering 4,000m2 field and 7,000 roots of lavender will be in all glory from early spring through early summer. An engraving of this symbol can be found on a stone in the Isobe Park. It is said to be the oldest marathon race held in Japan. Ansei no toashi monument 安政２年（1855）、安中藩主板倉勝明が 藩士の心身鍛錬のために、 安中城門から 碓氷峠の熊野権現までの約29kmを競争 させました。 この安政遠足が、 日本最古の マラソンと言われています。 安政遠足の碑 Many festivals are held throughout Annaka over the course of the year. Runners spor ting a wide range costumes entertain the viewers as they run along the Nakasen-do highway. There is also a large fireworks exhibition and lantern parade held near the banks of the Usui River. The performance is a nationally designated important intangible folklore cultural asset. “Annaka Nakajuku no Toro Ningyo” 中宿に伝承されてきた農民芸能で、 内部に回転式の小さなカンテラを 装着した和紙で作った人形を糸で 操ります。村の鎮守諏訪神社の例大 祭に行われていました。 国の重要無 形民俗文化財に指定されています。 安中中宿の燈籠人形 This festival is held annually on Marine Day (in July). Attractions include exhibitions of paintings by school children, local produce, and fishing contest in which children try to catch trout with their bare hands. Usui-ko Festival 鳥追い祭り、 ろうばいまつり 歳時記カレンダー 1月 磯部温泉祭のイベントのひとつとして行われます。 碓氷川の流れに灯籠の炎が映え、 幻想的な光景が広がります。 灯籠流し This is a Japanese-type puppet play performed in accompaniment with gidayu narratives and the music of shamisen. Three people are required to operate each puppet. Yashiro no Ningyo Joruri 八城でだいだいひきつがれる人形芝居は、城若座の操 人形として知られている。 浄瑠璃の発展した義太夫と三 味線に合わせて演じる三人遣いの人形浄瑠璃である。 城若座で所蔵する人形・衣装はすぐれたものが多く、県 内でもすぐれた操人形です。 八城の人形浄瑠璃 This festival is held in late February through late May when the plum blossoms are in full bloom. A number of attractions are held beneath the plum blossoms. Akima Plum Forest Festival 秋間梅林の梅の花が満開を迎える2月下旬から3月下 旬にかけて、秋間梅林祭りが開催されます。梅の木の下 での開花祭、 物産即売会、 モデル撮影会、 餅つき大会、 い も煮会などが行われます。 秋間梅林祭 This festival is held on the second Sunday in May,the same day as Ansei toashi on the site of the Usui Checkpoint. Attractions include traditional performances by local dancers and musicians. It is available now at drive-ins near the foot of the Usui Pass. The kama-meshi (“pot lunch” of rice, meat and vegetables cooked in small Mashikoyaki earthenware pots) have remained unchanged from the day it was first sold in 1958. They are now available in the Yokokawa Service Area on the Joshin-etsu Expressway and the Ogino Drive-inn on Route 18.
