As the calendar page shifts from February to March, we rejoice
with the thought that spring is upon us once again. Soon the cherry
blossoms will be in full bloom. Since the month of March is when
we spring forward with Daylight Savings Time (DST) as well as when we
celebrate the spring Higan service, I thought it would be appropriate to write this
month’s article on the subject of time.
As many of you may be familiar with, the Higan service is observed twice a
year, once around the time of the Spring Equinox and the other around the time
of the Fall Equinox. The following are a few facts about the Equinox and the DST
that you may find interesting.
Did you know that the word Equinox is derived from the Latin aequus (equal)
and nox (night), because at the equinox the night and day are equally long. The
term equinox can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) that such a
passage happens. It occurs twice a year once during spring and again in the fall.
The equinox is the time of the year when the sun shines directly over the equator.
However, due to our eliptical orbit, the equinox lags about six hours every year,
hence the addition of the February 29th every four years to correct the lag in time,
this year happens to be a Leap Year.
What’s also very interesting is that the Earth’s seasons are caused by the rotation
axis of the Earth not being perpendicular to its orbital plane. This tilt is called
the axial tilt. As a consequence, for half a year (from
around March 20 to around September 22) the northern
hemisphere tips toward the Sun, while for the other

half year the southern hemisphere has this honour. The

equator are the equinoxes.

That’s enough about the equinox, what is even
more interesting is the information I was able to find MARCH: Team 2

a small village in Ontario, and the Eastern tip of Quebec
also does not use it.
So why am I writing about the equinox and the DST?
It is to show that time is all relative. In Buddhism we have
different measurements of time, the shortest being a Ksana
or Setsuna in Japanese and this is translated as an instant
(actual measurements are 1/75th of a second) and a Kalpa
which is an infinitely long period.
In The True Teaching, Practice, and Realization of the
Pure Land Way, Shinran Shonin writes in the chapter on
the True Shinjin of the Pure Land Way,
“The passage on the Vow’s fulfillment that reveals the
Shinjin of the Primal Vow states: All sentient beings, as
they hear the Name, realize even one thought moment of
Shinjin and joy.”
The “one thought moment of Shinjin and joy” referred
to in this passage is the instant (Ichinen) that we entrust
ourselves to the infinite working of Amida Buddha as is
described in the opening passage of this article from the
“Shoshinge”. In that moment when we take refuge in the
Buddha of Immeasurable Life and Light, both the present
and infinite come together within us.
Just as in the moment when the cherry blossoms begin to
bloom, in that instance is the beauty of the whole Universe,
it is the same in the moment when we put our hands together
in gassho, in that moment we are truly one with Amida. I
hope during this Higan period, you will think upon this and
truly awaken to the infinite which is not separated from us.

On February 16th 2016 the Steveston
Buddhist Temple hosted the official premiere
of the Nikkei Stories, 10 short clips of early
Japanese Canadians Pioneers who influence
the heritage of Steveston and British
Columbia. Each of the stories is about brave
individuals who made great sacrifices to challenge the
discrimination and injustices of the early 1900’s and to stand
for the principles of equality and democracy of Canada.
The stories in a short ten minutes format present a concise,
well research documentary on why and how individuals
were able to improve life for our early pioneers. In addition
each story was narrated by a young and articulate Nikkei
Canadian from our present community. It was gratifying
to listen to our youth presenting passionately the history of
our pioneers.

Mindfulness, Meditation
and Buddhism
FUJINKAI
Hiroko Yoshihara
Professor Jeff Wilson will deliver a public lecture on
Mindfulness, Meditation and Buddhism. The terms
mindfulness and meditation appear regularly in news
reports, articles and books offering those who learn and
practice health benefits, reduced stress and other benefits.
Jeff has recently published a book, ‘Mindful America: The
Mutual Influence of Meditation and America Culture’ so
will be able to enlight us on its origins and pervasiveness
and how we can benefit from being more mindful and by
meditating. As a Buddhist scholar and follower he will also
be able to discuss how mindfulness and meditation fit into
our religious or spiritual lives.
At the AGM in January, Fujinkai
funds were disbursed: $1000 subsidy
to help with Keiroukai expenses,
$2500 toward temple utilities, $2000 to
Richmond Hospital Foundation and
$1000 to assist the family of Rev. Michael
Hayashi. Temple president suggested that Fujinkai hold
cooking classes for those who are interested. The annual
bus trip is on hold as last June only 15 members participated.
Suggestions for an alternative outing are welcomed. The
three working tobans are all facing challenges of health,
minding grand children/spouses and full time work but
have resolved to work together and help out when needed.
Appreciation was extended to Terry Beresford who has
pitched in 100%. Enjoy your life in Victoria!
Jeff Wilson is an associate professor of religious studies
and East Asian studies and the Chair of Humanities for
Renison University College, at the University of Waterloo.
He is also a member of the Jodo Shinshu sangha and has
received his Tokudo certification to qualify as a minister’s
assistant. He writes extensively on Buddhism authoring
several academic books and numerous peer reviewed
articles. In addition to his academic work Jeff has an
extensive record of working with community organizations
so he is able to present his ideas in an interesting and down
to earth manner.
Our annual Dana Day service was held on February 14.
The offertory received will be forwarded to the JSBTC
Women’s Federation to promote social welfare. In 2015,
the Women’s Federation was able to give $1500 each to
Food Bank of Canada, Breakfast Club and Global Medic
which are all Canadian charities. Thank you to everyone
for their donations.

Dharma School will meet only once this month on March
13 due to Spring Break and Higan service. Hanamatsuri is
on April 17. If there are any children taking music or dance
lessons or any other lessons, please let me know as we can
include them in the talent program at the Hanamatsuri
service.
Spring Food Fair is on May 29. Any donations of baked
goods will be greatly appreciated.
In gassho,
A gentle yoga practice suitable for all levels. We will
explore breathing techniques and a variety of lying,
standing, seated and kneeling yoga poses. Each class will
conclude with deep relaxation. Our January/February
sessions are focused on the 7 main chakras of the body.
Power Yoga (Tuesdays 5:30-6:45p)
A strenuous, challenging type of yoga class (modifications
will be provided). Our classes involve flowing movements
combined with deeper holds and concludes with deep
relaxation.

Keiko Go
It is very nice to see familiar faces every month at the
monthly Moe No Kai gathering. Although we’ve been
having a mild winter, a lot f people at the temple are
currently suffering from bad coughs and runny nose. Some
had minor accidents at home.
Please stay healthy and
safe. Our March Moe No Kai will be held on Thursday,
March 31st at 10am. Let’s try to wear something brighter
to welcome the Spring . Bring your friends and enjoy
Thursday Moe No Kai morning.

On Feb 28th, the Steveston Buddhist Temple held its
Annual General Meeting. There more than 25 people in
attendance, which is the largest turnout in several years.
Over a period of three and a half hours updates were
given on all the temple status and activities. Here some of
the highlights:
Our Treasurer presented a balanced budget, and
membership dues will remain constant at $100 for 2016.
Temple membership is staying relatively constant, Bingo
volunteers are working very hard, though they would love
more help, and the same applies to the Fujinkai Tobans.
Over the next year, there will be a larger push to have
more of the men’s Sangha help with what have traditionally
been Fujinkai activities.
The other project that is having a large impact on many
aspects of temple operations is the 20/20 project, as repairs
to the roof, the creation of a handicapped bathroom, and the
expansion of the Nokudsudo will all be affected. It will most
likely only be a couple more months before members will
get to vote on whether to go ahead with the 20/20 project,
and members should expect a Special General Meeting this
3 spring.

1月の婦人会年次総会で婦人会の資金
を次の様に支出しました。敬老会費用
に$1000、お寺の電気、ガス、水道等
に$2500、リッチモンド・ホスピタル
基金に$2000、はやしマイケル開教使
の家族に$1000．仏教会会長が婦人会
が料理教室を開いたらどうかと提案しました。去年6月のバ
ス旅行の参加者がたった15人でしたので、今年のバス旅行は
今のところ見合わせています。他に小旅行のアイディアがあ
りましたらお知らせください。3つの当番グループは、体の
悪い人もいれば、お孫さんや連れ合いの面倒を見たり、フル
タイムで仕事をしたりして、いろいろと困難に直面していま
す。それでも何とかお互いに助け合って仕事をこなしていま
す。ベーレスフォード・テリーさんがいつも100%お手伝い
をしてくださり感謝しています。テリーさん、ビクトリアで
の生活を楽しんでください。
春の彼岸会
今年の冬は去年と比べれば雨
の多い年です。雨が長く続く
と気分も落ち込むこともある
といわれていますが、皆さん
いかがお過ごしでしょうか？
さて、そんな中早くも三月に
入り、お彼岸の季節がまいり
ます。そして春の訪れも徐々
に感じ始める時期でもありま

す。
お彼岸は三月と九月、年に二回春分と秋分に行
われる法要です。「お彼岸」の言葉はこの世の
迷いの「此岸」に対して「涅槃の境地の彼岸」
を指しています。浄土真宗では彼岸会を讃佛会
とも申し、参拝される方々が御仏を褒め称える
と言う意味で讃佛会と称されています。仏を褒
め称えることも大事ですが、それと同じぐらい
に大切なのは、お聴聞することです。そして、
例年のダーナデー法要は2月14日に行われました。頂いた献春分と秋分の季節では丁度昼と夜の長さが同じ

、Dhyana（禅那）、prajna(般若)の六つです。一般にはこの
六つの菩薩行を勤めればお浄土に参らせていただけると解釈

されていますが、親鸞聖人の教えでは、この六つの修行さえ

A Home for Adults with
Developmental Challenges?
The 20/20 committee is working
hard at creating a development that
will be a great addition for our temple.
Not just for seniors who might
want to live there, but for the whole
community.
As part of the plan we are considering
the inclusion of a group residence for
adults with developmental challenges
who need some support. Not only
could we create a community for them,
possibly in cluster of suites, but the
project might offer some opportunities
for employment or volunteering.
As this would require detailed
planning and some form of
negotiations with BC Housing, the
20/20 committee would like to hear
from families that have wished for
such a place for their adult children.
If there is enough interest we would
like to create a plan and present it to
BC Housing, but first we need the
input of the families. If you would
like to find out more, or indicate your
interest, please contact

発達障害のある成人用ホーム
20/20委員会はお寺にとって非常に有
意義な増築部分を作るために奮闘して
います。それは将来そこに住むシニア
のためだけでなく地域全体のためで
す。
今検討している計画の一部として、サ
ポートが必要な発達障害のある成人用
ホームも考えています。それは多分、
いくつかの個室が共有の場所、居間と
か台所とかを囲む形になるかと思いま
すが、そういう一区画を含める事によ
り、その人達の社会を作るだけでな
く、雇用やボランティアの機会も増え
ると思われます。
これは綿密に計画を立て、ＢＣハウジ
ングと交渉する必要があると思われま
す。そのため、これに該当する成人の
お子さんをお持ちの方でこのような住

居を必要とされるご家族のご意見を
20/20委員会にお聞かせください。
もしこの計画に関心のある方がある程
度いらっしゃる場合は、20/20委員会
は計画を練ってＢＣハウジングに提案
します。しかしまず皆様からのインプ
