J7 Literary Japanese 古文 University of Cambridge Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies 2012-13 Syllabus Dr Laura Moretti [email protected] 1 Introduction Welcome to Literary Japanese! This course is a comprehensive introduction to literary Japanese, in other words to Classical Japanese. When reading manuals on the history of the Japanese language written in English, you will note that Classical Japanese often refers to the kind of written language which was used in texts produced from the Heian period to the end of the Muromachi period. After the Muromachi period, linguists recognize the shift from Classical Japanese to Modern Japanese. This course will challenge this view, by offering a systematic analysis of Japanese grammar in texts produced from the Heian to the Edo period. You will learn the rules of classical Japanese grammar and you will reflect upon what is retained as well as what is changed in Edo-period texts. You will also be prompted to reflect upon the use of a variety of scripts in a variety of calligraphic styles in texts produced between the Heian period and the Edo period. In the meanwhile you will familiarize yourself with some of the vocabulary used in prose and poetry from the Heian to the Edo period. More specifically, this course will allow you to develop both knowledge and skills. Knowledge o Learn classical Japanese grammar in a systematic fashion, by combining the use of grammars with the analysis of primary sources written in classical Japanese. o Get exposed to a variety of texts that cover the Heian, Kamakura Muromachi and the Edo periods. o Expand your knowledge of Japanese pre-modern literature. o Develop an appreciation for texts in their original format and familiarize yourself with the existence of a variety of scripts. o Understand how classical Japanese evolved in time. Field-related skills o Get familiar with the tools at your disposal when dealing with classical texts, by developing the ability to locate, access and use them in an independent fashion. o Learn what a critical edition is, what kinds of critical editions you can use and how to use them in an informed way. Transferrable skills o Develop decision-making skills. ! You will be requested to memorize grammar, but your reading skills will entail a great deal of interpretation and, as a consequence, of decision making! o Develop critical thinking. o Engage in intellectual debates. 2 o Develop the ability to revise your own work and decisions on the basis of evidence. What will this course allow you to gain, apart from the aforementioned set of knowledge and skills? Because of the way seminars are conducted, you will be able to: o Gain a better understanding of modern Japanese, as you will  Translate not only in English but also from classical Japanese into modern Japanese  Learn new vocabulary which will allow you to talk in a learned way  Understand the roots of modern grammar o Gain access to sources which might otherwise be inaccessible …and many other things that you will discover by yourself while attending the seminars! Time and place of lectures/seminars Tuesday, 9-10, Room 9 (Check rooms again in Lent and Easter Terms) Thursday, 9-10, Room 314 (Check rooms again in Lent and Easter Terms) Teaching style The majority of the classes will take the form of seminars. Therefore classes will constitute your supervision. You will be asked to: o Conduct an analysis of the grammar (following the style applied in the second week of classes). o Translate grammatical structures into contemporary Japanese when requested to do so. o Translate the whole passage in English. Your peers will: o Comment on your work on the basis of the analysis that they made. o Make suggestions about other possible interpretations and/or translations. Hands-on sessions In Lent Term, I shall organize a visit to the collection of pre-Meiji books held at the University Library and a visit to the collection of Japanese prints at the Fitzwilliam Museum. These visits are not compulsory and will not count towards the exam. They are thought as ways to deepen your knowledge of the formats through which texts written in classical Japanese were circulated. If you are interested in taking part in these hands-on sessions, please do send an email to [email protected] by October 30, 2012 indicating the days and hours when you are free from other classes. 3 Drop-in sessions The pace of this course is fast and demanding. If you feel that you are falling behind, please do not struggle alone. Do come and visit me! I shall be available for drop-in sessions during term-time every Tuesday from 11 am to 12 pm.
