■ はじめに
こんにちは、中西です。
突然ですが、あなたは『偉人』と聞いてどんなイメージを持ちますか？
ウォルト・ディズニーは７回の破産を乗り越えた後に
ディズニーランドという夢の国を創った。
マイケル・ジョーダンは、高校時代は活躍できませんでしたが、
やがてバスケットボール界のスーパースターになった。
他にも、同じような経験を持ち偉人となった人たちが大勢います。
彼らに共通しているのは何か？
ちょっと考えてみて欲しいのですが、僕は彼らがソレに対して『代償（対価）』
を払っているということ。
これが大きいと思う。
僕たちは、一夜にして成功した人たちの例を耳にすることあるけれど、
彼らが成功を収めるまでに流した汗と涙については、あまり知りません。
学校の成績を上げるには、テレビを見る時間を削らなければなりません。
きれいな身体をつくるためには、好きなカツ丼セットを、ちょっとやめといて、
もっと運動をする必要があります。
お金を貯めるには、無駄使いを、やめなければなりません。
代償を進んで払う覚悟があれば、
途中でどんな試練や挫折を経験しても乗り越えることができます。

彼女も進んで対価を支払った自物。
彼女はあるシャンプーを使って髪の毛が抜けるという経験をしました。
しかし、そのことについて、問題だ、問題だ！どうしよう、どうしよう！とメーカーにクレ
ームを言うのではなく、そこから天然素材の製品を開発するアイデアを思いつき、そ
れを製造販売する『Eden Body Works（エデン・ボディワークス）』
という会社を立ち上げました。
現在ジャスミンは１６才にして、社長を務め、業績を伸ばしています。
「大変な仕事の量でした。映画も見に行きたいですし、パーティに参加したいときもあ
りましたが、それを我慢して働きました。そんなに時間をかける価値があったからで

今回紹介する記事は、ロンドンから香港へフライト中のブリティッシュ航空の機内で起
こったあるハプニングです。
乗客が一瞬で凍りついたその理由とは？
短い英文なので、まずはざっと目を通して見て下さい。

The pilot pressed the wrong button which triggered an automated voice message that was
broadcast throughout the plane, The Sun claimed.
It said: "This is an emergency announcement. We may shortly need to make an emergency
landing on water."
The flight was travelling from Heathrow to Hong Kong and the warning was issued as the aircraft
flew over the North Sea.
When cabin crew realised the ran down the aisles reassuring the 275 passengers that it was a
mistake.
The airline has apologised for "undue distress".
Last year panic broke out on an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Paris when an emergency
landing announcement was played by mistake just 20 minutes into the journey.
A first announcement was made in English telling passengers to return to their seats due to
turbulence.
A second warning was then played warning of an emergency landing in French causing panic
amongst the French passengers.
An airline spokesman said: "There was a malfunction of the public address system and we
apologise to our passengers.
"This sort of thing happens very rarely."
はい、お帰りなさい。
今回のニュースは、手違いによって緊急着陸するというアナウンスが流れたために、
乗客が凍りついた、という内容の記事です。
この飛行機（ボーイング 747）はロンドン・ヒースロー空港から香港に行く途中の飛行
機で、275 名の乗客を乗せてちょうど北海辺りにさしかかったところで事件が起こりま
した。

飛行機のクルーがうっかり自動で流れる緊急着陸時の放送ボタンを押してしまい、
"This is an emergency announcement. We may shortly need to make an emergency landing on
water."
「これは緊急連絡です。この飛行機は水上に緊急着陸します」
と言う放送が機内に流れました。
当時の様子を乗客のひとりであるミシェルさん（32 歳）は
「飛行機が墜落する案内を受けるほど最悪なことは思いつかない」と語り、
また機内の乗客たちは恐れおののいていたと述べています。
ミスに気づいた乗務員はすぐに訂正放送を流し、通常どおり飛行機が運行されると伝
えました。
さすがに上空数万メートルでの事故は防ぎようがないので、命の覚悟をしてしまうこと
だけに精神的にかなりダメージが大きいですよね。
不幸中の幸いとはまさにこの事です。

ditch というのは、あまり見かけない単語だと思いますが、これは不時着水させる、と
いう意味です。

Panic-stricken passengers, of which the majority were French, spent several terrifying minutes
convinced they were about to plunge into the sea only to discover staff had put on the wrong
announcement.
Around 70 people were on board the A320 Airbus which took off from Dublin on its way to Paris'
Charles de Gaulle airport.
Approximately 20 minutes after take-off, an announcement in English advised passengers that
the plane was passing through an area of turbulence, and to return to their seats and fasten their
seat belts.
It was directly followed by another announcement, this time in French.
Relaxed-looking English-speaking passengers smiled at their fellow French travellers and
presumed they were listening to the same message.
However, this one received a very different response that could not be explained by cultural
differences as the French began to scream, shake and cry.
One passenger told the Irish Examiner newspaper that a Frenchman who had been dozing next
to him suddenly woke up and looked very startled.

"He translated what had been said to me. The message, he said, was that we should prepare for
an emergency landing, note where the emergency exits were and await instructions from the
captain. As there was turbulence as well I got quite alarmed.
"The woman behind me was crying. All the French freaked out," he added.
A few agonising minutes later, the cabin crew realised there was something wrong as
passengers were wailing. In fact, a steward had simply pressed the wrong pre-recorded
message – warning the plane was about to make an emergency landing.
The aircraft was over the sea at the time and some passengers believed the plane was about to
ditch.
"They then went back on the PA system and apologised for playing the wrong announcement in
French," the passenger said.An Aer Lingus spokeswoman confirmed that a pre-recorded
message in French about the emergency landing had been accidentally pressed instead of the
turbulence warning.
"We subsequently clarified this and apologised to our passengers. It is a very unusual
occurrence," he said.
The mid-air drama happened on August 4 but was not reported in France until yesterday.
French nerves are still jangling following the still unexplained crash of an Airbus A330-200
belonging to Air France, the national carrier.
Flight 447 plunged into the ocean after taking off from Brazil for Paris, killing all 228 on board. It
was the company's worst-ever disaster.
Investigators said last month they expected it would take at least 18 months year to reach
conclusions about the causes of the crash, after submarines failed to detect the plane's two
black boxes.
この記事はフランス行きの飛行機で（フランス語で）緊急の間違い放送が入り、
乗客のフランス人が大パニックを起こしたというまるでドッキリのような実話です。

に」と言う内容でした。

リラックスした英語圏の乗客とは対照的に、

そのフランス語の放送内容ですが、

「これから緊急着陸に入ります」と言うものだったからです。
ちょうどその頃に気流の激しいところを通過していたこともあり、

そんな状況の乗客の様子を見て、ようやく客室乗務員が気づきましたが、
原因は、誤った放送内容のテープを押してしまったという事です。
1 つ目の記事同様、ついつい乗客に同情してしまう、そんな記事ですよね。

■ damp / humid
次の日本文を瞬間的に英文にして声に出して見て下さい。
状況は今年北海道から転勤してきた彼/彼女が東京の異常な暑さに対してこんな一
言、
「真夏の東京は本当にむしむししますね。」
今回のポイントは『むしむしする』という表現がきちんと使えるかどうか、です。
ついつい日常会話でも使ってしまいそうな表現なので、きちんと押さえておきましょ
う！真夏は、in mid-summer で OK です。
それでは、声に出したら次項へお進み下さい。
「真夏の東京は本当にむしむししますね。」
解説は次項です。

今回用意した英文はこの 2 つ。
・ Tokyo is extremely damp in mid-summer.
・ Tokyo is extremely humid in mid-summer.
それでは、解説です。
『A is(=) B』の型なので文法に関しての解説は必要ないと思うので、それぞれのニュア
ンスを説明していきますね。
まず、damp ですが、これはどういう時によく使われるのかというと、梅雨の時期にまれ
に低温が続く日がありますが、この状態のことを形容するのにぴったりな表現、低温
のしめっぽさを表すのが damp です。
じめじめした不快な感じ、という状態の時に使う単語です。どちらかというとマイナスの
イメージです。日本語でも『じめじめ』という言葉はマイナスなイメージですよね。

一方、humid は天気や天候など、気象予報でよく使われるそんな言葉ですよね。
上の例文を見ても分かるように、日本語だと『むしむしする』にぴったりなそんな表現
で、humid はまさに暑くて、しかもじめじめする、高温の湿っぽさを表現するのにぴった
りな言葉です。
なので、今の時期、うだるような暑さを形容するには、まさにもってこいの単語というわ
けですね。
ですので、文法的にはどちらを使っても間違いではないですが、今の状況を的確に表
現するのであれば、
Tokyo is extremely humid in mid-summer.
が良いです。
それから似たような単語として moist があります。

これは damp や humid とは違って、プラスのイメージ、ニュアンスを持つ言葉で、主に
食べ物や目、肌が湿り過ぎることも乾燥し過ぎることもなく適度に湿った状態を表現す
るそんな言葉です。
日本でもよくモイスチャークリームという言葉で適度な潤いを与えるハンドクリームな
どを形容していますよね。
LONGMAN の USAGE(慣用)にも damp、humid、それから moist の違いについて書いて
あったのでその部分を抜粋すると、
Damp is often used in a bad sense.
Humid is a more scientific word usually used of climate or weather.
Moist is used especially of food and parts of the body, and often has a good sense
(= not too dry).
とあります。
なので、日本語にすると、damp は『じめじめした』、humid は『むしむしした』
moist は『潤った』という具合ですね。(moisturizer は肌を潤すクリームのことですね。)
以上、最後の moist は補足となりましたが、参考にしてみて下さい！
