Title
Friction-Stir Forming and its Applications
Abstract
The authors present a new material forming approach called friction-stir forming (FSF). FSF is a
kind of friction-stir processing to fabricate accurate product shape on a metal sheet as follows. A
metal sheet is placed on a die, and friction stirring is conducted on its back surface. The material
deforms due to high pressure and heat caused by the friction-stir process, and the die pattern is
transferred precisely. The authors applied FSF to generate aluminum alloy gear racks, rib
structures on sheet metal, rivet-like structures, thermal fins, and high-density pin embossments.
The paper presents the basic schema of FSF including its features and deformation mechanism
and demonstrates its applications. In the experiments, the material in FSF often displayed
outstanding deformability and moldability, and its product shapes were highly accurate. However,
deformable material volume generated by friction stirring is limited. Therefore, it is important for
practical use of FSF to find applications having good compatibility with the above features. In
addition, study on the metallurgical effect of friction stirring on materials deformation includes
dynamic recrystallizations and relaxation of stress could be another hot topic for FSF. In future
work, the authors would like to continue developing applications, conducting metallurgical and
schematic evaluations, and employing various materials including super-plastic materials to
evaluate the process.

Title
Impact Energy Absorption,IEA Devices: An Analysis
Abstract
Collisions occurs in our everyday life. From a small object falls on the floor until the collision
meteor into the earth surface. The effect of collision will damage the structure and as well as human
life.Thus, Impact Energy Absorption(IEA) devices is an absorption tool to reduce the damage of a
certain main structure and injury.
This lecture will highlight the analysis of IEA in automotive industry and new finding on both metal
and non-metallic structure material (composite). The terms such as Vehicle Crashworthiness in the
loading of axial crushing,bending crushing,indentation and inversion will be discussed and
analysed. Elements like tube, square and hexagonal circular subjected to loading will be discussed.
The deformed mode in diamond, concentina, plastic half wavelength,peak & mean load,
densification and energy absorbed will be observed and highlighted. The experimental, analytical
results and computer simulation are compared and give a closer agreement.
