Coaching Records
Art Keller, ‘44, Carthage’s career coaching leader with a 177-87-7 record in 31 years. Keller won eight CCIW titles, including five straight from 1969 to 1973. Under Keller’s leadership, Carthage rattled off six undefeated conference seasons, three 14-game win streaks, and a phenomenal 29-game CCIW unbeaten streak (28-0-1). The CCIW’s Outstanding
Offensive Player Award is named for Keller, who stands third on the conference’s all-time victory ledger with a 105-53-3
mark in his 22 seasons in the league. Keller, who also served as Carthage’s athletic director from 1952 to 1982, received
a college-division Distinguished Coaching Award from the Football Writers Association of America in 1982, and he was
inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. Also pictured below is Keller’s widow, Beverly Keller, shown
holding the game ball at Carthage’s 1999 homecoming game.
Lewis Omer, Carthage’s head football coach (1921-35), head men’s basketball coach (1921-29) and athletic director, is
credited with originating the Illinois High School Association’s state basketball tournament. Omer organized the first tournament in 1908 in Oak Park, Ill., while serving as the Northwestern University men’s basketball coach. He was inducted
into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
J. Arthur Baird, ’00, a 1984 posthumous inductee into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame, had an athletic career that
would raise an eyebrow or two these days in the NCAA. Four years of college eligibility wasn’t enough for Baird. His
stellar record lasted seven years, including a four-year undergraduate career at Carthage (1896-1900) and a three-year
career at Northwestern while pursuing a law degree.
After Baird graduated in 1900, teammate William M. Ruthrauff wrote University of Chicago football coach Alonzo Stagg,
trying to interest the legendary coach in letting Baird join the 1900 Maroon football squad. In a return letter to Ruthrauff,
Stagg said, “Baird is evidently a good all-around athlete, but I am looking for stars.” Indeed.
Undaunted, Ruthrauff’s father, Carthage president John M. Ruthrauff, intervened with Northwestern University, and the
result was an invitation to Baird to attend law school and play football.
Baird became a star for the Wildcats, the first athlete to letter in three sports in one season: football, baseball and track.
He was a punter and offensive guard on the football team and was named Chicago Daily News All-Big 10 as a sophomore. Perhaps to settle a score, Baird also played a significant role in Northwestern’s defeat of Chicago during the 1900
season.
In track, he was an outstanding performer in the high jump, the hurdles, the pole vault, and the throwing events. He was a
center on Northwestern’s first basketball team and a first baseman on the diamond squad.
After receiving his law degree from Northwestern in the spring of 1903, Baird practiced law in Chicago, for the next three
years, taking time off in the fall to coach football at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, (1903-1905) and at Whitman
College in Walla Walla, Washington, (1906-1907), where his 1907 team reportedly upended the University of Washington.
He was named Carthage athletic director and men’s basketball coach in December 1907, added head football duties in
the fall of 1908, and baseball responsibilities in 1910. He remained as both basketball and football coach through the end
of the 1914 seasons and as baseball coach through 1916.
At the same time, he kept up his law practice and was elected as a judge in Hancock County in 1910. He served one
term, returned to private practice, but was elected again in 1934 for a four-year term and re-elected in 1938, 1942, and
1946. Baird retired from the bench when his term expired in 1950, but remained active in the law until he died on July 26,
1964, in Galesburg, Illinois. Baird served as a member of the Carthage Board of Trustees for 40 years (1924-64).
Born on November 2, 1877, on a farm in Carthage Township, he married Georgia Hubbs of New York City on June 23,
1913. Georgia Baird died in October 1917.

William Simmons, ‘02, the Redmen’s “Mr. Touchdown,” is credited with
scoring Carthage’s first home touchdown in the 18-0 win over the Quincy
Athletic Association on Nov. 28, 1895. Simmons scored on a 75-yard fumble
recovery. Simmons (left in the photo with former Carthage coach Art Keller
in 1958), who died in 1962, was the last living player from Carthage’s 1895

The Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Carthage’s First League
From 1912 to 1941, Carthage was a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (IIAA) for football, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s
golf and men’s track and field. According to former Illinois State University
track and field coach Joe Cogdal, the league had its roots in the 1870s when
a number of Illinois schools banded together for oratorical contests. The
first intercollegiate football game within this association was played in 1881
between Illinois State and Knox College, and a football association was
established for the 1894 season. The IIAA was formed in April 1908 for a
May 22 track and field meet with eight charter members, including the Bradley Polytechnic Institute (later Bradley University), Illinois College, Illinois
State Normal University (later shortened to Illinois State University), Illinois
Wesleyan University, Knox College, Lombard College (now defunct), Millikin
University and Monmouth College.
By the 1910-11, the league had expanded to 13 teams with the addition
of Eureka College, Hedding College (now defunct), Lincoln College,
Shurtleff College (now defunct) and William & Vashti College (now
defunct).Four schools were added for the 1912-13 season, including
Augustana College (Ill.), Carthage College, Eastern Illinois Normal University (later shortened to Eastern Illinois University) and McKendree
College. Southern Illinois Normal University (later re-named Southern
Illinois University-Carbondale) became the 18th member during the
1913-14 academic year. Three more schools were added in 1914-15
to boost the membership to 21 schools. Those three were Blackburn
College, St. Viator College (now defunct) and Western Illinois Normal
University (later shortened to Western Illinois University). William &
Vashti closed in 1917 reducing the league to 20 members, but Lake
Forest College and Wheaton College (Ill.) joined the circuit in 1919-20
when the league name was changed to the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IIAC), bringing the membership up to 22 schools.
Several other schools joined in the 1920s, including Mount Morris
College (joined in 1920 and now defunct), Northern Illinois Normal University (joined in 1922 and later re-named Northern Illinois University),
Elmhurst College in 1925 and North Central (Ill.) College in 1927. Blackburn withdrew following the 1923 season, and Hedding College closed
in 1927 and was subsequently bought out by Illinois Wesleyan.
Somewhere along the line, the IIAC gained the nickname of the Little
19 Conference, even though the membership ranged from the high of
24 in the 1927-28 season schools to just five by the spring of 1942.
Lincoln pulled out after 1928 spring season and subsequently shifted
from a four-year school to a junior college. Lombard quit after 1929,
and the school closed in 1930 and was taken over by Knox College.
Mount Morris closed following the 1931-32 academic year. The conference really began to falter after the 1936-37 season when 12 schools
withdrew to form the Illinois College Conference. Those 12 schools
were Augustana, Bradley, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Knox, Lake
Forest, McKendree, Millikin, Monmouth, North Central (Ill.), Shurtleff
(closed after the 1956-57 academic year and absorbed by Southern
Illinois University) and Wheaton. St. Viator closed in 1939, and Olivet
Nazarene University took over its campus in 1947. Carthage, Elmhurst
and Eureka withdrew from the IIAC in December 1941, leaving only five
schools: Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois
and Western Illinois.
In 1950, the league changed its name from the Illinois Intercollegiate
Athletic Association to the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan
University brought the membership to seven schools. Eastern Michigan and Southern Illinois both left after the 1961-62 academic year.
Eastern Michigan went independent for several years before joining
the Presidents’ Athletic Conference for two seasons in 1964-65 and
1965-66. EMI returned to independent status for a time before joining
the Mid-American Conference in 1971. EMU did not begin competing in
MAC men’s basketball until 1974-75 or in football until 1976.
Southern Illinois also played as an independent for several years before
joining the Academic Athletic Conference of Midwestern Universities
for two seasons beginning in 1970-71 and 1971-72. SIU returned to
independent status for three seasons prior to joining the Missouri Valley
Conference for men’s basketball in 1975-76 and for football in 1977.
The MVC dropped football as a conference sport in 1985, and SIU became a charter member of the Gateway Football Conference that same
year, along with former Little 19 schools Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois
and Illinois State.Northern Illinois left the IIAC for the Mid-American
Conference in 1966, dropping the league to four members.

Year-By-Year Scores
The final demise of the IIAC came in 1969 when Illinois State left to join the
Academic Athletic Conference of Midwestern Universities. Illinois State is
now a member of the Missouri Valley conference. The remaining three IIAC
schools disbanded the league at the end of the 1969-70 academic year.
Central Michigan joined the Mid-American Conference in 1971. Western Illinois was admitted to the Association of Mid-Continent Universities
(AMCU) in 1978-79 after eight years as an independent, and Eastern Illinois
joined WIU in the AMCU in 1982-83 after 12 years as an independent. The
AMCU changed its name to the Mid-Continent Conference in 1989-90 and
to the Summit League in 2007-08. Among the other IIAC members, seven
later helped form the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Those
seven were Augustana (Ill.), Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin,
North Central (Ill.) and Wheaton (Ill.). Bradley is currently a member of the
Missouri Valley Conference. Blackburn and Eureka are members of the
St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Illinois College, Knox, Lake
Forest and Monmouth are members of the Midwest Conference, although
Illinois College and Lake Forest were once part of the CCIW. McKendree
is an NAIA affiliate and a member of the American Midwest Conference,
and Lincoln is now a two-year school and a member of the National Junior
College Athletic Association.

Radio station WCAZ, which originated as a Carthage College campus station
during the 1921-22 academic year, broadcast a 1922 football game between
Carthage and Culver-Stockton College, and that’s believed to be the third-ever “live” voice-transmission broadcast of a college football game.
The earliest-known college football broadcasts were not relayed on radio in
the traditional voice-broadcast manner, but rather in Morse code signals and
subsequently “re-broadcast” by local announcers. The University of Minnesota pioneered this method from 1912-15, but the process ground to halt with
World War I and its federal restrictions regarding amateur radio broadcasts.
Texas A&M University’s campus radio station, 5XB in College Station, Texas,
which later became WTAW, was probably the second school to utilize the
Morse-code system in its Nov. 24, 1921 broadcast of the Aggies’ home game
against the University of Texas.

+Shurtleff scheduled Carthage and Blackburn on the same day, in error.
Shurtleff chose to play Blackburn and forfeit to Carthage.
Station KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pa., with announcer Harold Arlin, is thought to be
the first station to broadcast a “live” voice-transmission broadcast of a college
football game when it offered a University of Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia
University game on either Oct. 8, 1921 KDKA repeated the process with another West Virginia-Pittsburgh game on Oct. 14, 1922. Sometime that same
day, probably an hour or so later due to differing time zones, then-Carthage
freshman Paul Ensrud, ‘26, handled the play-by-play of the Red Men’s 20-0
win over Culver-Stockton, in Carthage, Ill. That game was carried on WCAZ,
that, due to the paucity of radio stations at the time, was reportedly received
in as many as 40 states.
Two weeks later, on October 28, a Princeton University-University of Chicago
game was broadcast over WEAF Radio (later WNBC Radio) in New York,
N.Y. A University of Pennsylvania game in November 1922 versus an unknown opponent was broadcast on WIP Radio in Philadelphia, Pa., and that’s
thought to be the fifth live broadcast. WCAZ, first licensed by the Federal
Radio Commission on May 5, 1922, was sold to a private investor in late-1929
and remains in operation today.

One of Art Keller’s assistant coaches in the mid 1950s was Robert “Red”
Miller (pictured above in light suit to the right of Keller). Miller, a native
of Macomb, Ill., was named team MVP three straight years (1947-49)
at Western Illinois University. He worked under Keller for three seasons
(1955-57) before Lou Saban named Miller an assistant coach for the
American Football League Boston Patriots in 1960. Miller subsequently
served as an assistant with the Buffalo Bills, the Denver Broncos, the
St. Louis Cardinals, the Baltimore Colts and the New England Patriots,
before taking over head coaching duties for the Broncos in 1977. His
first team in Denver, known at the time as the “Orange Crush,” went 12-2
and lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XII. Miller was named
“NFL Football Coach of the Year” by the Associated Press, United Press
International and most of the football publications. He remained with the
Broncos through the end of the 1980 season.

Following Carthage College’s move from Carthage, Ill., to Kenosha, Wis., the
1964 football team played its home schedule at Kenosha’s Lakefront Stadium
(pictured above). That downtown facility at Lake Michigan near 58th Street
is now the site of the Southport Marina. The 1965 team played its Oct. 2
home-opener versus Augustana (Ill.), as well as its Oct. 23 Homecoming date
versus North Park, at Lakefront Stadium before opening what is now known
as Art Keller Field, on the Carthage campus, with the Nov. 6 Illinois Wesleyan
contest. The 1965 team is pictured above running onto the field at Lakefront
Stadium. The building behind the concession stand is the old American Motors assembly plant, now the site of Harbor Park.

Carthage played a home-and-home series with Alma College in 1968 and
1969. Denny Stolz coached the Scots from 1965-70. Stolz was hired as
head football coach at Michigan State University in 1973 and named “Big
10 Football Coach of the Year” in 1974. The Redmen’s 19-7 win at Alma in
1969 snapped an 18-game Scots winning streak.

George “Papa Bear” Halas, former owner and head coach of the Chicago
Bears, was honored at halftime of Carthage’s Oct. 16, 1971, homecoming game versus Millikin University. Halas (center) is flanked by former
Carthage president Harold H. Lentz (left) and former Carthage coach Jon
Swift (right).
Carthage played its first post-season game on Nov. 27, 1971, when the
Redmen played host to defending NAIA Division II national champion
Westminster College (Pa.) in a semifinal game at Art Keller Field in
Kenosha, Wis. With a game-time temperature reportedly at 13 degrees,
Westminster led after three quarters, 21-20. Carthage’s John Vitkus
scored on a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Curt Whipple’s carry
for the two-point conversion put the Redmen up, 28-21. Westminster
quarterback Gene McNamara hooked up on a 16-yard touchdown pass
to flanker Roger Price late in the game to knot the score at 28-28. That’s
the way the score stayed, but under NAIA playoff rules, Westminster
was declared the winner based on the number of penetrations inside
Carthage’s 20-yard line.

Carthage’s second NAIA post-season game was played on a mudsoaked field in Ripley, West. Va., on Nov. 25, 1973, versus Glenville
State University in a national semifinal contest. The field conditions
wreaked havoc with Carthage’s triple option offense, and despite
controlling the tempo of the game, the Redmen lost by a 14-7 margin.
Glenville State scored on a pair of touchdown passes, one for 86 yards
and the other for 46 yards. Carthage scored their only touchdown on a
four-yard run by Dirk Hudson in the final minutes of the contest.

Carthage was re-admitted as an NCAA member in July 1976 after
leaving the association in 1970. Carthage held dual membership in both
the NCAA and the NAIA from 1952 to 1969. The College left the NCAA
prior to the 1970 football season in order to qualify for the NAIA Football
Championship, something the Redmen accomplished in both 1971
and 1973. Participation in the NAIA championship would have violated
NCAA rules against playing in unsanctioned tournaments. When the
Carthage re-joined the NCAA in 1976, the College became an NCAA
Division III member.

Tailback Pete Baranek set both Carthage and CCIW records on Oct. 5,
1985, when he ran for 382 yards against North Central (Ill.). The mark
was also an NCAA Division III record for eight years until Coe College’s
Carey Bender ran for 417 yards in 1993. Since then, three others
have surpassed Baranek’s mark, including Marietta College’s Dante
Brown, who set the current record with 441 yards in 1996. Baranek was
originally credited with 370 yards, but was given an additional 12 yards
following a review of game film and subsequent consultation with the
NCAA Statistics Service. On the play in question, Baranek ran for nine
yards and then fumbled the football. The ball rolled for an additional 12
yards before North Central (Ill.) recovered.
