What are lava coasts? A lava coast is any beach or area of land bordering water that is covered or composed of hardened lava. Formation of Lava Coasts Lava coasts are formed when lava from an active volcano erupts and cools along the shoreline. Two ways this can happen: – Lava flows directly into sea – Lava flows over existing shoreline Famous Examples The islands of Hawaii have many actively erupting volcanoes and lava coasts. Photographic Examples Photographic Examples Species of the Coast The lava is greater than 1100°C (Explosions) Seawater in contact with lava immediately evaporates, sea is heated New land is formed, ground is encrusted Inhospitable conditions for life to survive. Do volcanoes and global warming mix? A large scale volcanic eruption can increase all 3 major greenhouse gas effects (ozone, greenhouse and haze) 4 major examples exist where large scale volcanic eruptions have lowered temperatures (including Krakatau) Not enough is known of volcanoes to distinguish a relationship between surface temperatures and volcanic activity Works Cited "Climate Effects of Volcanic Eruptions."
