NASA, the American space agency, has said that
it intends to set up a permanent manned base
on the moon. NASA officials say that the base
will probably be at the south pole of the moon
and that the aim of the base will be to provide
a starting point for manned expeditions to Mars.
For the launch, NASA will use two rockets, Ares 5
and Ares 1. These will carry two vehicles; the Orion
exploration vehicle and an attached all-purpose
lunar lander. The lunar lander can land anywhere
and be the beginnings of a base camp.
By 2020, officials said, astronauts will return to
the moon, and by 2024 there will be a permanent
manned base. A vehicle on the surface will take
people on expeditions far from the base.

Australian scientists are working with the Sydney architects James and
Greenbaum on an ambitious project to build the world’s first underwater
city. John James spoke to our reporters yesterday: ‘We will initially build a
300-metre wide dome on the ocean floor two kilometres from the coast of
Sydney. This will contain a block of flats for about ten families and there
will be a leisure centre and shopping facilities.’ Later there will be other
domes connected to each other, leading to the completion of a whole city
by 2050.
Gordon Greenbaum said: ‘By building a city under the sea we will give
people a controlled environment with no exposure to pollution. Also, they
won’t be at risk from nuclear war or other dangers.’ Families who live in
the domes will be able to go to and from Sydney in specially designed
mini-submarines.

The UK architect Sir Norman Fos
ter has designed the
Khan Shatyry entertainment
centre in Astana, the
capital of Kazakhstan. President
Nursultan Nazarbayev
recently showed a 3D model of
the construction to
the public. It is a 150 metre hig
h transparent tent made
of a special material called ETF
E. It allows light in but
protects the centre from the sev
ere –30°C temperatures
of the Kazakh winter. Below, in
an area as large as ten
football stadiums, there will be
squares and streets,
canals, shopping centres and gol
f courses. The residents
of the Kazakh capital will be able
to go for boat rides,
play tennis or drink coffee outside
cafés. Although this
is an extremely complex project
, engineers say that
they will finish construction in
12 months at a cost of
about one and a half billion dol
lars.

Kiku è andata a passare un mese a casa di
Lucy in Inghilterra. Leggi la sua e-mail ad un
suo amico. Sottolinea l’alternativa corretta.
Hi Kichiro!
1I’m
writing/I write to you in English to show
you how much I have learned. I’m having a
really good time here in England with Lucy.
She’s really nice and so are her family.
2I have/I’m having my own bedroom and it’s
very big, in fact it’s bigger than our living
room at home!

UNITS 1–2
Immagina di essere uno studente in visita
in Inghilterra. Scrivi un’ e-mail ad un tuo
amico simile a quella di Kiku (100–150
parole). Descrivi la vita inglese dal punto
di vista di uno straniero. Includi le seguenti
P T
informazioni:
• una descrizione della tua famiglia
• una descrizione della vita scolastica con
punti positivi e negativi
• una descrizione di abitudini sociali e nella
casa
Every day we 3must/have to get up at
seven. We have to walk 4to/at school but
it’s quite near, only about ten minutes away.
We don’t have to start school until nine
o’clock and we finish at four o’clock. We
have lunch 5out/at school. School dinners
are OK but sometimes we take sandwiches.
The classes are very noisy and students
talk a lot – very different from our school at
home. I think it’s more interesting here but
maybe more difficult to study in class.
Home life is also quite different. You
6mustn’t/don’t have to wear slippers in the
house or when you go to the bathroom.
Also Lucy’s dad helps her mum with the
housework and he often does the cooking.
We can 7to go/go out in the evening to see
Lucy’s friends and we often get home quite
late. Her parents think this is OK. She has
8a lot of/much freedom!
Write to me soon!
Best wishes,
Kiku
