The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan
Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August 1998. The MPO today comprises musicians
from 24 countries, including 7 from Malaysia, a remarkable example of harmony among
different cultures and nationalities.
A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has worked with the MPO, including Lorin
Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras,
Andrea Bocelli and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine
musical qualities and vitality.
With each new season, the MPO continues to present a varied programme of orchestral
music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series.
Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz,
contemporary and commissioned works.
The MPO regularly performs at major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has showcased
its virtuosity to audiences in Singapore (1999, 2001 and 2005), Korea (2001), Australia
(2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007), Japan (2001 and 2009) and Vietnam (2013). Its
Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform
to develop musical awareness, appreciation and skills through dedicated activities that
include instrumental lessons, workshops and school concerts. ENCOUNTER also presents
memorable events in such diverse venues as orphanages, hospitals, rehabilitation centres
and community centres.
The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation
of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). It gave its inaugural concert at
DFP on 25 August 2007, followed by a tour in Peninsular Malaysia. It has performed in
Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009), Brisbane, Australia (2012), Kedah (2013) and
Johore Bahru (2014).
As it celebrates its 18th anniversary in 2016, the MPO remains steadfast in its mission
to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. The MPO’s main benefactor is
PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.

GUILLAUME TOURNIAIRE
DaNIEL Carison
French conductor Guillaume Tourniaire is currently
enjoying a meteoric rise onto the international
conducting stage. Born in Provence, he studied piano
and conducting at the Geneva Conservatory during
which time he won the first prize at the international
Gabriel Fauré Piano Competition. His professional
career started as Artistic Director of the vocal ensemble,
Le Motet de Genève from 1993, Chorusmaster at the
Grand Théâtre de Genève from 1996 and Choir Director
of the Teatro la Fenice in Venice from 2001 to 2002.
Daniel Carison is one of Australia's most promising
baritones. A graduate of the University of Melbourne
in 2014, he completed his initial operatic training
under the guidance of Peter Mander. In 2015, Carison
became the recipient of a scholarship with the Melba
Opera Trust, the premier operatic training and business
programme for singers in the southern hemisphere.
2017 will mark his third consecutive year with this
programme.

Tourniaire made his conducting debut in 1998 at the
Grand Théâtre de Genève in its production of Prokofiev’s opera Betrothal in a Monastery.
He then appeared at the Opéra National de Paris, conducting Stravinsky’s ballet,
Le Sacre du Printemps. He subsequently collaborated with the Orchestre de la Suisse
Romande in Geneva.
He has conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra
dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de Lyon, Warsaw Polish
Radio Orchestra, Dijon Opera, Hermitage Orchestra in Saint-Petersburg and the
Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, amongst others.
In 2006, he made his début at the Prague State Opera conducting Bernstein’s Candide,
and became the company’s Musical Director in 2007. In 2012, he was appointed Artistic
Director of Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne. In 2015, he won the prestigious Australian
Green Room Award for Best Conductor.
YASMIN YUSOFF

Yasmin Yusoff, Miss Malaysia/Universe 1978, is one of
the most successful Malaysian beauty queens. As Miss
Malaysia, Yasmin was the first to bring home an
international trophy, the Miss Universe third prize for
Best National Costume. Having achieved a highly
respected position in the Malaysian entertainment
industry, beginning with 2 successful albums under the
WEA label (which included 2 number one singles), she
is a movie and TV actress, an award-winning radio DJ
whose voice is one of the most familiar in the country,
and a sought-after emcee for events both in Malaysia
and overseas.
She received an award from HRH the Sultan of Pahang,
according her the title 'Dato', in recognition of her services to her home state. She has run
the Celebrity Lap at the Malaysian Relay For Life for cancer for the last 7 years and is wellknown for her charity and pro bono work.

A principal artist with the Victorian Opera, Carison has
studied and performed roles including Pandolfe
(Cendrillon by Massanet) and Balthazar (The Play of Herod by Mills). Other roles include
I Pagliacci/Laughter and Tears, Lucia di Lammermoor, Sweeney Todd, Der Fliegende
Holländer and Don Carlo with Opera Australia. His lieder and song performance
experience is extensive. A highly regarded concert artist in Australia, some of his
celebrated performances include Schumann’s Dichterliebe Op.48, Vaughan Williams’
Songs of Travel, Brahms’ Vier ernste Gesänge, Schubert’s Winterreise and Schwanengesang, Beethoven’s An die Ferne Geliebte and Ravel’s Chansons Madecasses.
Carison is also a passionate performer and exponent of modern music, and performed in
the world premiere of the Requiem for the End of Time by Cassomenos. He is known for
his compelling singing of oratorio. In 2014, he was awarded first prize in the Royal
Melbourne Philharmonic Aria Competition.
Ang Mei Foong

Ang Mei Foong, a lyric soprano, is an alumna of
National Taiwan Normal University (Taiwan),
Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia Roma (Italy)
and University of Melbourne (Australia). She is currently
a PhD candidate at University Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Mei Foong has won various international scholarships,
prizes and awards. Since 2003, she has performed both
locally and internationally. Her theatrical performances
include the role Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen; The Mother
in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors; and Mimì in
Puccini’s La Bohème. Her upcoming opera engagement
include Contessa in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with the Kuala Lumpur City Opera in
2017. S
he has worked with conductors including David Chin, Juan Montoya, Kevin Field,
Ciarán McAuley and Fabio Mechetti. She is now a full-time lecturer in the Music
Department at UPM, and is an active researcher in the field of voice rehabilitation.

Yeoh Ker Ker

Born in Penang, Yeoh Ker Ker entered the Conservatorio
di Musica “Luigi Cherubini” Firenze where she studied
with Marta Taddei. While in Firenze, she performed
as Aspasia in Mitridate Re di Ponto, Adele in Die
Fledermaus and Cunegonde in Candide. She graduated
with highest distinction and was offered a place to study
in Accademia di Alto Perfezionamento, founded by
Fondazione Festival di Puccini where she studied with
Lucetta Bizzi. She has performed as soloist in concerts
at Teatro Torre del Lago, Teatro del Giglio Lucca and
Parma Lirica.
A graduate from Louisiana State University and
a protégé of American tenor, Robert Grayson,
Yap Jin Hin has appeared in leading roles with a
number of opera companies in the USA. He is
currently the senior lecturer at the Music Department
of the University of Malaya. He performed the role of
Don José in Carmen with the Eat, Sing and Travel
People in 2013. In 2015, he collaborated with the
Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Carmen Festival.
In August this year, he performed the role of Rodolfo in
La Bohème with the Kuala Lumpur City Opera.

Yeoh’s performances upon returning to Malaysia include
at Penang Music Festival (2010), Chin Yong Music
Festival and Penangite Homecoming Concert (both in 2012). She played Adina in L’elisir
d’amore (2014) and Musetta in La Bohème (2016). As a concert soloist, she has also
performed in Can You Handel It?, Divas’ Night, Klang Music Festival (2015), 12th JB
Arts Festival and the Kuala Lumpur City Opera Inaugural Opera Gala Concert. She is
currently an adjunct lecturer in National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy (ASWARA).
YiLing Chaing

YiLing Chaing holds a bachelor degree from Birmingham
Conservatoire (UK) and a master degree from the Kodály
Institute of Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Hungary).
Her professional debut concert at age 18 was attended
by Datuk Sri Lim Chong Keat and her mentor Loh
Siew Tuan. Upon returning to Malaysia at age 25, she
performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
and dancer/choreographer Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Her
performance career has taken her to the UK, Hungary,
Singapore, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand
and throughout Malaysia. She has received excellent
reviews from the press, citing her unique rich and warm
middle register. She is currently a part-time lecturer
International Christian Chorale Conducting Society
(ICCCS) and UCSI University.

ANNA SIMINSKA

Soprano Anna Siminska from Poland studied at
the Frédéric Chopin Music University in Warsaw
and the University of the Arts in Graz. She made
her international debut as Adele (Die Fledermaus)
in Vienna and was a member of the Young Singers’
Project at the 2009 Salzburg Festival. She has sung
Queen of the Night around the world, for companies
including Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House
Covent Garden, Washington National Opera, Berlin
State Opera, Dresden Semperoper, Komische Oper
Berlin, Oper Frankfurt and Opera Bastille in Paris.
Other appearances include Woglinde (Götterdämmerung)
for the Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg Eastern Festival,
Adele (Die Fledermaus) for Vienna State Opera,
Clorinde (La Cenerentola) for Glyndebourne on Tour,
Dew Fairy (Hänsel und Gretel) for Royal Opera House
Covent Garden, Ilia (Idomeneo) for Komische Oper Berlin, Gilda (Rigoletto) in Limoges,
Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Flaminia (Il mondo della Luna) in Linz, and Zerbinetta
(Ariadne auf Naxos) with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.
Siminska collaborated with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Bertrand de Billy,
Philippe Auguin, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Stefan Soltesz, Daniel Harding, Erwin Ortner,
Nicola Luisotti and Leo Hussain. Her concert appearances include Carmina Burana at the
Musikverein with the Arnold Schoenberg Choir and the Tölzer Knabenchor, recorded by ASC.

Hedwig’s Theme from the film Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The enchanting music by John Williams
was originally intended as accompaniment
to Harry’s pet owl Hedwig but appears in all
films in the Harry Potter series to represent
the films’ themes of friendship, mystery
and magic.

Just as in Harry Potter, good conquers evil in Mozart’s famous opera The Magic
Flute, which premiered in Vienna, Austria in 1791. In the story set in ancient
Egypt, handsome prince Tamino and bird catcher Papageno embark on a journey,
equipped with a magic flute to save princess Pamina. In the beginning of the
story, the three servants of the Queen of the Night kill a serpent in order to rescue
Tamino and triumphantly sings “Triumph! Triumph!”. Later, the Queen sings her
famous aria “Der Hölle Rache”, one of opera’s most demanding colatura soprano
arias. In Act 2, the bird catcher’s desire for a wife is sung in full baritone glory in
Papageno’s aria “Ein Mädchen oder”.
Antonin Dvořák’s opera, Rusalka, was first performed in Prague, the Czech
Republic, in 1901. Based on a popular Czech fairytale, it is about Rusalka, a
mystical water nymph (also described as a mermaid) and the sacrifices she
makes out of love for a human who ends up betraying her. The tragic love story
is the basis for the popular fairytale we know today as The Little Mermaid. In the
story, Rusalka gives up her ability to speak so that she can take a human form
after drinking a magic potion from the witch Jezibaba, only to learn the sad truth
about the price she has to pay when the love is tragically betrayed. In Act 1, the
water kingdom is entertained by the nymphs with the three mermaids’ aria
“Hou! Hou! Hou!”, while Jezibaba’s aria “Čury mury fuk” forebodingly warns
Rusalka of great suffering if she chooses to take a human form.

Based on the popular children’s fairytale Hänsel und Gretel from the Brothers
Grimm, the German opera of the same name by Engelbert Humperdinck, is a tale
of kinship, bravery and the battle between good and evil. First performed in 1893
in Weimar, Germany, the opera is known for incorporating folk elements in its
music, which are evident in the two works presented in this concert. The Witch’s
Ride opens Act 2 and propels the adventure of the two siblings who are lost in
the woods with elements of suspense, mystery and adventure. The children’s
encounter with the witch outside her gingerbread house follows with the witch’s
aria “Hurr Hopp Hopp Hopp”, which uncovers her wicked intentions.

The symphonic poem The Sorcerer's
Apprentice by Paul Dukas is a
popular concert piece based on
a 1797 work by Goethe. In 1940,
Dukas’ work found a much bigger
audience and earned a spot in
popular culture when it was featured
in a segment of Disney’s animated
concert film Fantasia. In the story,
Mickey Mouse plays the role of an
apprentice to a wizard with a magical
blue pointy hat. When the wizard
falls asleep, Mickey decides to wear
the hat and conjures up spells for
the broom to complete the chores
on his behalf. Unfortunately, Mickey
falls asleep and wakes up to find the
house flooded!
