n Friday, May 9, our nation paused, taking two
minutes of silence as a tribute to those who
upheld freedom, justice and human dignity
during the 12 year Afghan conflict.
At CFB Borden, a host of soldiers and community members gathered together in the Buell Fieldhouse to mark the
National Day of Honour for the 40,000 Canadian men and
women who served in Afghanistan.

The ceremony was emotional, as 3 of Borden’s own,
stood up and bravely recounted their experiences during the
long mission, of friends made and friends lost. Please see
their stories beginning on page 4.

s’est arrêtée pour deux minutes de silence en
hommage à tous ceux et celles qui ont défendu la
liberté, la justice et la dignité humaine durant 12 années de
conflit en Afghanistan.
À la BFC Borden, un grand nombre de soldats et de
membres de la collectivité se sont rassemblés au pavillon du
Centre Buell pour marquer la Journée nationale de commémoration tenue en l’honneur des 40 000 Canadiens et
Canadiennes qui ont servi en Afghanistan.
La cérémonie était riche en émotions; trois militaires de
Borden ont pris la parole et raconté bravement leurs expériences durant la longue mission, les amitiés créées et les amis

Free Admission for
Grand Opening
of H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre May 22
The 200th Anniversary of Discovery Harbour will be launched in the new H.M.S.
Tecumseth Centre on Thursday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m., with free admission to the Centre
and Discovery Harbour throughout the entire day.
The dynamic H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre will offer visitors a world-class facility that
showcases the original 1815 hull of H.M.S. Tecumseth. The original hull was pulled from
Penetanguishene Bay in 1953 but has not had a climate controlled permanent home until
now.
Exciting new exhibits surrounding the history of the Penetanguishene Naval
Establishment will be part of the visitor experience in the H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre.
Numerous artifacts from the site’s 19th century history will be on display, including the
original 1815 clear-glass deck lights from H.M.S. Tecumseth plus a wide array of intriguing items including a powder flask, period coins, a brass platter stamped with the King’s
mark, compasses, a carronade, a ship’s anchor, and even a rum bottle and flask. Key historical personalities associated with the site’s history will also be explored, including
Naval Hydrographer Henry Bayfield, Captain Samuel Roberts, and Chief Tecumseh.
The exhibit was funded in part by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official
Languages, 1812 Commemoration Fund.
Jan Gray, General Manager of Huronia Historical Parks, notes that “the new H.M.S.
Tecumseth Centre with its rare 1815 shipwreck is truly unique in Canada and will serve as
a dynamic visitor showcase to the site’s 19th century story and its ties with the history of
Penetanguishene, the region, and other sites throughout Ontario”.
The official Grand Opening of the H.M.S.Tecumseth Centre will take place on May 22
at 11:00 a.m. As part of the Official Opening, the original Tecumseth hull and new Centre
will receive a dedication and blessing from the Reverend Veronica Roynon of St. James
on-the-Lines Church in Penetanguishene, and items will be placed in a time capsule to be
integrated within the building’s structure. The public is welcome to attend the Grand
Opening; and free admission will be offered all day to the Centre and the historic site.

Discovery Harbour is operated by Huronia Historical Parks, and is an attraction of the
Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.
The best of

Improving our working environment
A Message from the CFB Borden Command Team
efence team. As you know, one of the top three priorities in Borden is continuous
improvement. While we review and improve our Base policies and procedures,
BCWO Godbout and I wanted to take this opportunity to socialize one in particular that deals with “zero tolerance” issues, specifically four elements of conduct that are
not allowed in the Canadian Armed Forces and on the premises of CFB Borden. These are
sexual misconduct, harassment, alcohol misconduct and prohibited drug use and other
involvement with drugs. I am sure you will agree that our institution and working environ-

ment must be free from such conduct. As a result, a more comprehensive Base policy will
soon be published, reminding everyone of their responsibility related to these issues. To
help everyone, contact information will be provided to complainants, victims and witnesses, in order to access appropriate support quickly and fairly, and without fear of reprisal.
The table below provides a summary of options currently available to all. With the support
of all, we will collectively strive at providing our people with a better environment to flourish.

The following are the stories told by three
Afghanistan Veterans at the CFB Borden
National Day of Honour event.
I

've been asked to write a speech about
my time in Afghanistan. I can honestly say, over the past two weeks since
I've been asked to do this, it's brought back
a lot of memories and a lot of emotions.
Some good, some not so good.
I'm sure we've all heard and probably
used the phrase “I hit the ground running".
Well, that was my initial introduction to
Afghanistan and I'm fairly certain I'm not
the only here who felt that way. We landed
in early September and began the first days
of mission specific training. We weren't
there long before hearing the alarm which
meant "All Medical Personnel to the Role
3". I didn't even know what was happening.
It was like organized chaos but all in the
same direction….
And then we arrived at the Role 3. We
had no idea where to go, what to do, who to
help, where anything was or even where to
stand. I was in awe of what was happening
in front of me. There were medics, doctors,
nurses, supply techs, health care administrators, and drivers helping each other to move
and treat the local people who were severely injured by an IED (Improvised Explosive
Device). This was not what I expected, but
it was amazing and somewhat unbelievable
to see everyone work together, like a well
oiled machine, and for the most part we didn't even know each others names yet. We
had 28 casualties make it to the trauma bays
that night. Some injured more than others. It
was the first time I saw a real mass casualty
incident with real injuries. It was the first
time I was part of team helping with a
MASS CAS. It wasn't til the next day when
we found out how many people survived the
night before. The total was still 28. That
night, I saw first hand what we do and how
well we do it. That was probably the proudest moment of my tour....And this was only
the first couple of days.
Over the next little while we settled in to
our "normal" jobs. I worked in Primary
Care doing sick parade and helping out in
other areas of the Role 3 as needed. When a
Blackhawk arrived with another casualty
you could usually find me in a trauma bay
helping out or watching a surgery if I had
time. It was hard work, busy, fast paced and
mentally exhausting all the time and I loved
being part of it.
I've held the hands of some whose family couldn't be there as they took their last
breath and left our world for what I hope is
a better place. I’d like to imagine that in
those final moments they felt a little less
alone.
I've held frightened and injured children
and in a short time fixed their whole world
with a 4 pack of Oreos. I don’t think I’ll
ever forget the innocent smiles and giggles

or me, it all started in the
summer of 2007. The
Police
Oriented
Mentoring
Liaison
Team
(POMLT) had been created a few
days before. We were all gathered
in front of the OMLT supply sea
container to receive our last
minute briefing and order of
march. All the guys were pumped
up and ready to move in the direction of Patrol Base Wilson. Once
we arrived, everyone was getting
that came from that little blue package and
often thought ‘how awesome it would be to
fix everything with a few packs of Oreos.’
During my tour, I had the opportunity to
go "Outside the Wire" as the medic, or
"trunk monkey" as they called us, for the
QRF. I spent a total of 8 weeks outside KAF
(Kandahar Air Field) which was split
between FOB (Forward Operating Base)
Ma'sum Ghar and Camp Nathan Smith with
the PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Team).
My time at the PRT was probably the most
challenging and the main reason I wasn’t
sure I wanted to stand here and talk about it.
Out of all the experiences, good and bad, the
first thing that still comes to my mind when
I think about Afghanistan is "It should have
been me, I should’ve been there".
I thought about telling you about what
happened that night and all the details but
decided against it. I’m not sure that I could
have made it through anyway. That night is
still crisp in my mind and every detail is
equally as important as the others. I’ll keep
this for me. This is my cross to carry.
Enough about that. I’d like to leave on a
high note. Some of you have probably seen,
or even have pictures of the sign that was
posted on the concrete barrier just outside
the Role 3. It said "Role 3 Multinational
Medical Unit - The best care, anywhere"
and believe me, it's true. Ask anyone who
ever walked or has been carried inside its
doors. Most that have made it there alive,
have also left alive and that's something that
we as Canadian Forces members, regardless
of trade, can be very proud of.

n m’a demandé de rédiger un discours sur ma période de service en Afghanistan.
Je peux vous dire en toute honnêteté que depuis qu’on m’a fait cette demande, il
y a deux semaines, beaucoup d’émotions et de souvenirs ont refait surface; certains positifs, d’autres moins.
L'expression « agir sans plus tarder » prend bien tout son sens ici. En effet, cela résume
mon premier contact avec l’Afghanistan et je suis à peu près certain que je ne suis pas le
seul ici à avoir eu cette impression. Nous avons atterri au début de septembre et amorcé les
premières journées de l’instruction propre à la mission. Il s’est écoulé peu de temps avant
que l’on entende l’alarme qui indiquait que « tout le personnel médical devait se rendre à
l’installation de rôle 3 ». Je ne savais même pas ce qui se passait. On aurait dit un chaos
organisé dans une seule et unique direction…
Nous sommes ensuite arrivés à l’installation de rôle 3. Nous ne savions pas où nous
diriger, quoi faire, qui aider, où se trouvaient les choses ou même où nous mettre. J’étais
complètement fasciné par ce qui se déroulait devant mes yeux. Des techniciens médicaux,
des médecins, des infirmiers, des techniciens en approvisionnement, des administrateurs
des soins de santé et des conducteurs s’entraidaient pour déplacer et traiter les habitants de
la place qui avaient été gravement blessés par un dispositif explosif de circonstance. Cela
ne ressemblait pas à ce à quoi je m’attendais, mais il était impressionnant et en quelque
sorte incroyable d’observer tout le monde travailler ensemble, comme une machine bien
huilée, alors que pour la plupart, nous ne connaissions pas encore les noms des autres. Ce
soir-là, les unités de traumatologie ont accueilli 28 blessés, certains cas plus graves que
d’autres. C’était la première fois que j’assistais à un véritable incident ayant fait de nombreuses victimes avec des blessures réelles. C’était la première fois que je faisais partie
d’une équipe qui participait à un MASS CAS. Ce n’est que le lendemain que nous avons
constaté combien de personnes avaient survécu pendant la nuit. Le total était toujours de

nous le faisons bien. Il s’agit probablement du moment de la mission dont je suis le plus
fier.... et c’était seulement au tout début.
Au cours des jours suivants, nous nous sommes installés dans nos fonctions « habituelles ».
J’œuvrais dans les soins primaires; je faisais la revue des malades et j’aidais les autres éléments de l’installation de rôle 3 selon les besoins. Lorsqu’un hélicoptère Blackhawk arrivait
avec un autre blessé, on me trouvait habituellement dans une unité de traumatologie en train
d’aider le personnel ou d’observer une chirurgie si j’avais du temps. Le rythme était toujours accéléré et occupé, le travail acharné et épuisant mentalement, et j’ai adoré en faire
partie.
Quand leur famille ne pouvait être présente, j’ai tenu la main de personnes pendant
qu’elles prenaient leur dernier souffle et nous quittaient pour ce que j’espère être un monde
meilleur. J’aime imaginer que dans leurs derniers moments de vie ils se sont sentis un peu
moins seuls.
J’ai tenu des enfants effrayés et blessés et, en peu de temps, j’ai rétabli leur petit monde
grâce à un paquet de quatre biscuits Oreo. Je crois que je n’oublierai jamais les sourires et
les petits rires innocents suscités par ce petit emballage bleu. Je me suis souvent fait la
réflexion qu’il serait merveilleux de pouvoir tout régler avec quelques paquets d’Oreo.
Durant mon affectation, j’ai eu la possibilité de sortir des « barbelés » à titre de technicien médical pour la force de réaction rapide. Au total, j’ai passé huit semaines à l’extérieur
de l'aérodrome de Kandahar que j’ai partagées entre la BOA Ma'sum Ghar et le Camp
Nathan Smith avec l’équipe provinciale de reconstruction (EPR). Mon séjour au sein de
l’EPR a probablement été le plus exigeant et il s’agit de la principale raison pour laquelle
j’hésitais à venir ici vous parler. De toutes les expériences, bonnes ou mauvaises, la première chose qui me vient à l’esprit lorsque je pense à l’Afghanistan c’est « ça aurait dû être
moi, j’aurais dû être là ».
J’ai pensé vous parler de ce qui est arrivé cette nuit-là, mais j’ai décidé de ne pas le faire.
Je ne suis pas certain que je serais allé jusqu’au bout de mon récit de toute façon. Cette nuit
est encore claire et précise dans ma mémoire et chaque détail revêt son importance. Je
garderai cela pour moi. Je dois porter ma croix.
Passons à autre chose. J’aimerais conclure sur une note joyeuse. Certains d’entre vous
ont probablement déjà vu la pancarte affichée sur la barrière en béton à l’extérieur de l’installation de rôle 3 sur laquelle on pouvait lire « Unité médicale multinationale de rôle 3 –
les meilleurs soins, quel que soit l’endroit » et croyez-moi, c’est la vérité. Demandez à
quiconque qui a déjà pénétré ou été transporté dans cet endroit. La plupart de ceux qui y
sont entrés vivants en sont ressortis en vie et il s’agit là de quelque chose dont nous les
membres des Forces canadiennes, peu importe le groupe professionnel, pouvons tirer une
immense fierté.

morning; I was in the radio operator seat and we received a radio
transmission saying that one of the
stations was under fire. As we
pulled through the township, we
could observe vehicles still smoking from the recent attacks.
Moments later we were at an IED
site where friendly forces vehicles
had been ambushed. This is when
we all realized that we were quite
far away from the comfort of our
home.
I can clearly remember over 30
incidents that I was involved with
in theater, where either we had to
fight for our lives or for the ones of
others. One stands out more than
the others and, fortunately, the
head injury I sustained at the time
was treatable with surgery.

But back to our mission, the mission was quite simple:
establish a police substation past the forward operation
bases and mentor Afghan National Police personnel on how
to conduct vehicle check points, vehicle searches, and public relations. Although simple, the task was also challenging
due to the language barrier. We had to rely on our interpreter
a lot. Fortunately, our interpreter was an ex Afghan Army
Commander who had left the army to assist us. I remember
this one day, he approached me and appeared devastated. I
found out that his cell phone had died while he was talking
to his family. I took a couple of parts from his cell phone, an
old radio, and a battery from communication system and
repaired it for him. It wasn’t pretty, but he was able to call

home. From that day forward, he did everything he could to
assist us in our mission. He would go out of his way to
speak with the local elders and we would provide the village
with goods and supplies because they provided us information on the insurgents.
Afghanistan has had a way of changing people. A lot of
us now suffer from PTSD, while some others are denying it.
It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a normal reaction to the
sufferance that we may have observed over there. One thing
is clear however, it is that our men and women of the military have grown united together with the Afghanistan mission. For example, never before had an armoured Capt, 5
Military Police NCMs, and an infanteer worked as a team in
order to achieve a common goal. I can honestly say that all
military members deployed overseas served their part,
regardless of where they were employed. It is with the unity
of these members in the background, that the frontline personnel like us were able to stay the course, and carry on our
mission.
It is with pride that we bear our Canadian Flag. It is with
honour that we stand on guard for thee. For those of us who
were less fortunate, to their family, friends and the ones they
left behind, you will always and forever be remembered as
true Canadian Heroes.

our moi, tout a commencé au cours de l’été 2007. L’Équipe de liaison et de mentorat opérationnel de la police venait tout juste d’être créée, quelques jours auparavant. Nous étions tous réunis devant le conteneur maritime d’approvisionnement
de l’Équipe, sur le point de recevoir le briefing de dernière minute et les détails sur l’ordre
de marche. Tous les membres de l’Équipe étaient enthousiastes et prêts à partir pour la Base
de patrouille Wilson. À notre arrivée à la Base, tout le monde était en train de se préparer
en vue du départ vers le poste de police auxiliaire, le lendemain matin.
Je me souviens parfaitement bien de ce matin là; j’étais dans le siège de l’opérateur
radio, et nous avons reçu une transmission radio nous avisant que l’un des postes de police
était sous les tirs de l’ennemi. Pendant que nous traversions le village, nous voyons des
véhicules qui dégageaient encore de la fumée, après les attaques récentes. Un peu plus tard,
nous sommes arrivés au lieu d’une embuscade, où un IED avait explosé au passage de
véhicules de forces amies. C’est à ce moment là que nous avons compris que nous étions
bien loin du confort de notre foyer.
Je me souviens clairement de plus de 30 incidents survenus dans le théâtre pendant que
j’y étais, qui nous ont obligés à combattre soit pour sauver notre vie soit pour sauver la vie
de l’un des nôtres. L’un de ces incidents a été plus marquant que les autres et, heureusement,
une chirurgie m’a permis de me remettre de la blessure à la tête que j’ai subie à ce moment
là.
Mais, revenons à notre mission, qui était assez simple : établir un poste de police auxiliaire au delà des bases d’opérations avancées et enseigner aux membres de la Police
nationale afghane comment diriger un poste de contrôle, fouiller un véhicule et entretenir
des relations publiques. Malgré sa simplicité, la mission était difficile en raison de la barrière linguistique. Nous devions beaucoup compter sur l’aide de notre interprète.
Heureusement, notre interprète était un ancien commandant de l’Armée afghane qui avait
quitté l’armée pour nous aider. Je me souviens de cette journée particulière où il s’est
approché de moi, l’air anéanti. J’ai appris que son téléphone cellulaire avait cessé de fonctionner pendant qu’il était en train de parler avec un membre de sa famille. J’ai sorti
quelques pièces de son cellulaire, un vieux poste radio et une pile d’un système de communication, et j’ai fabriqué un téléphone cellulaire pour lui. Ce n’était pas un chef d’œuvre,
mais il pouvait appeler à la maison. Par la suite, il n’a jamais cessé de faire tout ce qu’il
pouvait pour nous aider dans notre mission. Il faisait des pieds et des mains pour aller rencontrer les aînés du village où nous nous trouvions, et nous fournissions des biens et des
approvisionnements aux villageois, parce qu’ils nous fournissaient de l’information sur les
insurgés.
L’Afghanistan n’a pas manqué de changer les gens. Nous sommes nombreux à souffrir
de troubles de stress post traumatique, et certains refusent de l’admettre. Il n’y a pas de quoi
se sentir honteux. Ces troubles sont une réaction normale à la souffrance que nous avons
peut être observée là bas. Une chose est certaine, toutefois : les hommes et les femmes de
nos forces armées sont devenus plus unis que jamais au cours de la mission en Afghanistan.
Par exemple, jamais auparavant un capitaine de l’Arme blindée, cinq militaires du rang de
la Police militaire et un soldat d’infanterie n’ont travaillé en équipe pour atteindre un but
commun. Je peux honnêtement dire que tous les militaires envoyés à l’étranger ont apporté
leur contribution à la mission, peu importe où ils étaient employés. C’est grâce à la solidarité qui unissait ces militaires chargés d’activités complémentaires que les militaires de première ligne comme nous ont pu maintenir le cap et poursuivre la mission qui nous avait été
confiée.
C’est avec fierté que nous portons notre drapeau du Canada. C’est avec honneur que
nous veillons sur vous. À ceux d’entre nous qui ont été moins chanceux, sachez que les
membres de votre famille, vos amis et tous ceux que vous avez quittés à jamais garderont
éternellement de vous le souvenir que vous êtes de véritables héros du Canada.

During my deployment I conducted several foot patrols as a Counter-Improvised
Explosive Device advisor; I was on 12
major mounted operations to conduct resupply of the Forward Observation Posts and
Combat Outposts throughout Panjwai’i and
Zhari Districts. During Canada’s mission,
more than a dozen of my friends were killed
including three members of the Afghan
National Army that were my fire team partners and friends. Several of my friends
were also wounded; both Canadian and
Afghan. The firefights stand out in my mind
as if it were today. However, equally perhaps more importantly is what we all
accomplished; we designed, sourced material and contracted the manufacturing in
Kandahar city for a tourniquet for the ANA;
we also sourced and delivered a series of
Halal combat rations making the ANA more
independent. This meant the ANA was no
longer a burden on the civilian Afghan population in areas where they deployed as they
could now carry their own food rather than

ood afternoon, my name is
Major George Garrard and I
would like to quickly speak to
you about my time in Afghanistan. I was
deployed from November 2007 to October
2008 with the Operational Mentoring and
Liaison Team or OMLT. This was the part
of the Canadian mission responsible for
training the Afghan National Army and
Afghan National Police. My specific job
was to train the Senior Logistics officer and
his ten staff from the ANA 1st Brigade,
205th Corps, based near Kandahar, in the
conduct of supply, maintenance, transport
and finance at the Unit, Brigade and Corps
level. Our goal was to enable them to
become self-sufficient; able to resupply and
maintain their own independent combat
operations without NATO assistance. I was
also tasked to coordinate the delivery of
Canadian C7 rifles with ammunition and
train 1st Brigade soldiers to properly fire
these weapons and store them and their
ammunition safely and securely.

Notre objectif était de faire en sorte qu’ils soient capables de réapprovisionner et de maintenir leurs propres troupes de combat en toute autonomie, sans l’assistance de l’OTAN. J’étais également chargé de coordonner la livraison de fusils C7 canadiens et de munitions, et de former les soldats de la 1re Brigade sur la bonne façon de s’en
servir et de les ranger, de même que les munitions, de façon sécuritaire.
Pendant ma mission, j’ai effectué plusieurs patrouilles à pied dans le rôle de conseiller
sur la lutte contre les dispositifs explosifs de circonstance; j’ai participé à 12 opérations
embarquées d’envergure, destinées à réapprovisionner les postes d’observation avancés et
les avant-postes de combat situés un peu partout dans les districts de Panjwai’i et de Zhari.
Au cours de la mission canadienne, plus d’une dizaine de mes amis ont été tués, dont trois
membres de l’Armée nationale afghane qui étaient mes partenaires d’équipe de tir. Plusieurs
de mes amis canadiens et afghans ont aussi été blessés. Je me souviens des échanges de tir
comme si c’était hier. Mais ce qu’il faut surtout souligner, sinon plus, c’est ce que nous

During the period I was in Afghanistan
the OMLT also rebuilt a school and we
reopened it prior to my departure. Not only
did we rebuild it but got an NGO to bring in
all the necessary school supplies to enable
the students to have all their materials and
books provided and we aided the local government with securing teachers. Most
importantly this school was open to both
boys and girls.
It was an exciting, frightening and exhilarating time in my life that has left me with
lifelong friends, a sense of loss but most
importantly a sense of accomplishing something far beyond anything I could have done
by myself. I would ask that you add the
Canadians who died in Afghanistan to the
list of those we have pledged never to forget
and most importantly to remember all they
gave their lives and accomplished for us.

pour la vie. J’en retire aussi un sentiment de perte, mais surtout, un sentiment d’avoir
accompli quelque chose bien au-delà de tout ce que j’aurais pu faire seul. C’est pourquoi je
vous demande de bien vouloir ajouter les Canadiens décédés en Afghanistan à la liste des
personnes que nous nous sommes engagés à ne jamais oublier, et surtout de vous rappeler
qu’ils ont sacrifié leur vie pour défendre nos intérêts.

Remembering the Battle
of the Atlantic

he longest continuous battle of the
Second World War began in
September 1939 and ended after six
long years of conflict with Germany’s surrender in May 1945. This was the Battle of the
Atlantic, where Canada’s forces played a central role for control of the Atlantic Ocean and
thus the passage of much needed supplies for
Europe.
Sunday, May 4 saw many Navy personnel,
Cadets, Veterans, and community members
gathered at the Barrie Waterfront to pay homage to the almost 2,000 members of the Royal
Canadian Navy (RCN), the 752 members of
the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the
1,600 Merchant Navy members (a civilian
force who supported the military by transporting supplies and equipment) who died during
this epic battle.
To mark the sacrifice of our countrymen and
women, the morning began with the dedication
of a Naval Memorial at a location in front of
the Boathouse at Heritage Park along Barrie’s
waterfront. The memorial has been in the
works since 2011, and thanks to many local
businesses has become a reality. The 1,200 lb
granite stone that now stands reads, “In honor
of the men and women who have served in the
Royal Canadian Navy. In memory of those lost
at sea, and in the line of duty. In tribute to the
ships of the fleet. In gratitude to those that now
stand “Ready, Aye, Ready.” Dedicated on the
69th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.”
“The Battle of the Atlantic was one of those
events in Canadian history that secured our
future and our freedom. It’s important that we
continue to recognize it,” commented Barrie
Mayor, Jeff Lehman. “This morning with the
new memorial that was dedicated at the Sea
Cadets building, there’s another place in Barrie
that can help us all remember this. I think as
time passes it’s very important to teach the next
generation about the sacrifices of past generations, and this is one of those occasions to do
that.”
Following the waterside ceremony, the
Cadets, RCN personnel, and legion members
paraded along the waterfront up to Memorial
Square for another short ceremony honoring
the sacrifice of these brave souls. Wreaths were
laid, a ship’s bell was rung for each of the vessels that lost crew during the conflict, and a
moment of silence was observed for the lives
claimed during the Battle.
“Barrie has a long history with serving the
Canadian Forces. I myself have served in Base
Borden, and I am very proud of the Base here
in Central Canada,” stated Commodore Steele,
of the RCN. “I am also aware that it’s often
challenging for the Navy to have visibility
across the country, its easier obviously in
Halifax and Esquimalt, but I think our presence
here and throughout Canada shows Canadians
exactly what the Navy does for our country
domestically and abroad. It’s very important
and it’s also a way for us to say thank you to
Barrie as well.”

a plus longue bataille de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale a commencé en septembre 1939 et a pris fin, après six longues années de
conflit, lorsque l’Allemagne a capitulé, en mai 1945. Il s’agit de la
bataille de l’Atlantique, durant laquelle les forces canadiennes ont joué un
rôle crucial dans le contrôle de l’océan Atlantique, puis dans le transport de
biens de première nécessité vers l’Europe.
Le dimanche 4 mai, de nombreux membres du personnel de la Marine,
des cadets, des anciens combattants et des membres de la population se sont
réunis au bord de l’eau à Barrie pour rendre hommage au quelque 2 000
membres de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC), aux 752 membres de
l’Aviation royale canadienne (ARC) et aux 1600 membres de la Marine
marchande (une force civile qui a appuyé les militaires en transportant des
fournitures et de l’équipement) qui sont morts durant cette bataille épique.
Afin de souligner le sacrifice de nos compatriotes, la journée a commencé par le dévoilement en avant-midi d’un monument commémoratif, en
face du hangar à bateaux dans le parc Heritage au bord de l’eau à Barrie.
L’édification du monument commémoratif a commencé en 2011 et est devenue réalité grâce à de nombreuses entreprises locales. La pierre de granite
de 1 200 lb porte une inscription où on peut lire : « En honneur des hommes
et des femmes qui ont servi dans la Marine royale canadienne. En mémoire
de ceux qui ont perdu la vie en mer et dans l’exercice de leur fonction. En
hommage aux navires de la flotte. En reconnaissance envers ceux qui sont
avec nous. “Prêts, toujours prêts.” Dédié à l’occasion du 69e anniversaire de
la bataille de l’Atlantique. » [Traduction]

À la suite de la cérémonie, les cadets, le personnel de la MRC et les
membres de la légion ont défilé au bord de l’eau jusqu’àu Memorial Square
où s’est tenue une autre courte cérémonie pour rendre hommage à ces âmes
courageuse; on a déposé des couronnes, puis fait sonner la cloche d’un
navire pour chaque vaisseau qui a perdu des membres d’équipage durant le
conflit, et on a observé un moment de silence pour les vies perdues durant
la bataille.
« À Barrie, il y a une longue tradition du service dans les Forces canadiennes. J’ai moi-même servi à la base de Borden et je suis très fier de cette
base du centre du Canada, » a indiqué le commodore Steele de la MRC.
« Je suis conscient qu’il est parfois difficile pour la Marine d’assurer sa visibilité dans l’ensemble du pays, comparativement à Halifax et à Esquimalt,
où c’est beaucoup plus facile, mais je crois que notre présence ici, et d’un
bout à l’autre du Canada, donne une représentation fidèle à la population
canadienne de ce que fait la Marine pour notre pays, ici et à l’étranger. C’est
très important et il s’agit également d’une façon de remercier la ville de
Barrie ».

a madhouse on May 7, as the
community came out in droves
to support one of their most successful
McHappy Days ever!
Whether it was support by offering assistance behind the counter or at the drive
through, or support by eating Big Macs,
Happy Meals or hot beverages, the community of Angus answered the call to raise
money for Ronald McDonald House and
other local charities. 1$ from each of the
mentioned menu items is donated, along
with monies from drive-through donations
and coin box donations which this year,
totaled a whopping $28,000! Ronald
McDonald Houses provide a home away
from home for families while their child is
being treated for serious illness at a nearby
hospital. For instance, if a child from our
community is sent to the Hospital for Sick
Children in Toronto to receive treatment,
then the family will be able to stay at a
Ronald McDonald House in Toronto during
that time to provide family support and
familiar faces to help the child remain in
good spirits and heal faster.
“This is our 21st annual McHappy Day
and 50% of the funds raised are going to the
Toronto Ronald House, and the other 50% is
going to be split between Stevenson
Memorial Hospital Foundation, Matthews
House Hospice, and The Base Borden
Military Family Resource Centre, which has
been part of our McHappy Day since we
have been here, about 33 years now, we’ve
been part of the Base Borden Community,”

part of our giving back to the community,
we given back in a lot of different ways and
different times, but this is the big day where
we actually showcase our brand and showcase our charity as well. The original idea
was for the community to get involved with
McDonalds in raising money for local children’s charities. Our big local children’s
charity is the Toronto Ronald House, over
1,000 room nights in the last 5 years have
been used by parents and families from
South Simcoe. Obviously we are very, very
proud and we love how much this community gets behind and supports it. You can see
how busy it is and how much support we
have. It’s awesome!”
Volunteers came out from Base Borden,
Nottwasaga Pines Secondary School, the
Angus Fire Department and many more
community partners to help man the restaurant during the flood of charitable patrons.
The restaurant was a sea of green, as it
seemed that the whole Base turned out for a
Big Mac.
“This is unbelievable to be helping out.
It’s all for a good cause and for our families,” commented Col Doyon, CFB Borden
Commander, as he poured coffee behind the
counter. “It’s outstanding to have so many
people here not only serving, but also coming and purchasing a meal. Outstanding!”
Thanks to everyone who volunteered and
donated. When we act together, we can
accomplish great things!

des journées du Grand McDon des plus
réussies!
Que ce soit en apportant son aide derrière
le comptoir ou au service au volant, ou
encore en achetant un Big Mac, un Joyeux
festin ou une boisson chaude, la collectivité
d’Angus n’a pas manqué de répondre à l’appel pour amasser des fonds pour le Manoir
Ronald McDonald et d’autres organismes de
bienfaisance locaux. En effet, le restaurant
verse 1 $ pour la vente de chacun de ces articles au menu, auquel s’ajoutent les sommes
recueillies au service au volant et dans les

McDonald offrent un deuxième chez-soi
aux familles d’enfants malades qui sont
traités pour des maladies graves dans un
hôpital à proximité. Par exemple, si un
enfant de notre collectivité est envoyé à
l’Hôpital pour enfants malades de Toronto
pour y recevoir des traitements, la famille
peut être hébergée pendant le temps du
traitement au Manoir Ronald McDonald à
Toronto. L’enfant reçoit alors tout le support
dont il a besoin et il est entouré de visages
familiers, ce qui lui permet de garder le
moral et de guérir rapidement.

la collectivité. Nous redonnons à la collectivité de plusieurs façons et à de nombreuses
reprises, mais le Grand McDon est la
journée la plus importante, au cours de
laquelle nous présentons notre marque de
commerce et notre apport caritatif. L’idée
originale reposait sur le fait que la collectivité participe au Grand McDon pour amasser
de l’argent pour les organismes caritatifs
visant les enfants de la région. Notre organisme de bienfaisance pour les enfants le plus
important est le Manoir Ronald MacDonald
de Toronto. Plus de 1 000 nuitées au cours
des 5 dernières années ont été utilisées par
des parents et des membres de famille de la
région de South Simcoe. De toute évidence,
nous sommes vraiment très fiers et nous
aimons voir à quel point cette collectivité se
retrousse les manches et nous aide dans
notre démarche. Vous pouvez voir combien
nous sommes occupés et le support que nous
avons. C’est génial. »
Des bénévoles de la Base Borden, de l’École secondaire Nottawasaga Pines, de la
caserne de pompiers d’Angus et de nombreux autres partenaires de la collectivité
nous ont aidés à tenir le restaurant au cours
de la grande vague de clients. Le restaurant
était une mer de camouflage. On aurait dit
que toute la base s’était déplacée pour
acheter un Big Mac.
« C’est incroyable de donner un coup de
main. C’est pour une bonne cause et pour
nos familles », a commenté le Col Doyon,
commandant de la BFC Borden, alors qu’il
versait un café derrière le comptoir. « C’est
extraordinaire de voir autant de personnes
non seulement en train de servir, mais aussi
qui viennent et achètent un repas.

Un grand merci à tous ceux et celles qui
ont été bénévoles et qui ont fait des dons. En
agissant ensemble, nous pouvons accomplir
de grandes choses!

n 1 April 2014, the Canadian Forces Training
Development Centre celebrated its 34th birthday.
The day was marked with a small celebration attended by unit members, command teams from across CFSTG and
the Commanding Officer of CFRG, BGen Meloche.
The Canadian Forces Training Development Centre
(CFTDC) was created in 1980 from what was known as the
Canadian Forces School of Instructional Technique (CFSIT).
Based in CFB Clinton from 1966 to 1971 and then in Borden
afterwards, CFSIT’s role was to provide specialty training in
methods of instruction and the Canadian Forces Individual
Training System. Upon transitioning to CFTDC, the unit became
more directly involved in helping solve training problems for the
Canadian Armed Forces while still conducting training in the
various aspects of the CFITS, which has since evolved to the
Canadian Forces Individual Training and Education System
(CFITES). Today the unit is comprised not only of training
development expertise, but has expanded to include the training
cadres of Personnel Selection and Recruiting Group HQ.
Speaking at the event both BGen Meloche and CFTDC’s
Commanding Officer, LCol Cameron emphasized the contribution that CFTDC has made to the recruiting, selection and training systems of the CAF. He also highlighted the unit’s continued
commitment to achieving instructional excellence throughout
the CAF. In addition to the festivities, two long serving members
of CFTDC (Lt(N) Lupton and WO Poire) were presented with
the first clasp to their Canadian Decoration signifying 22 years
of service.

Forces canadiennes a célébré son 34e anniversaire. La journée a été
marquée par une petite célébration à laquelle ont assisté des membres
de l’unité, des équipes de commandement du GISFC et le commandant du
GRFC, le Bgén Meloche.
Le Centre de développement de l’instruction des Forces canadiennes
(CDIFC) a été créé en 1980 à partir de ce qu’on appelait l’École de didactique
des Forces canadiennes (EDFC). Situé à la BFC Clinton de 1966 à 1971 et à
Borden par la suite, l’EDFC avait pour rôle d’offrir des cours spécialisés sur les
méthodes d’instruction et une formation sur le Système d’instruction individuelle des Forces canadiennes. Une fois devenue le CDIFC, l’unité a commencé à
aider plus directement les Forces canadiennes à résoudre les problèmes relatifs
à l’instruction tout en continuant à donner des séances de formation sur les
divers aspects du SIIFC aujourd'hui nommé le Système de l’instruction individuelle et de l’éducation des Forces canadiennes (SIIEFC). De nos jours, l’unité fournit non seulement une expertise en développement de l’instruction,
mais elle regroupe aussi les cadres d’instruction du personnel de sélection et le
QG du Groupe du recrutement des Forces canadiennes.
Au cours de la célébration, le Bgén Meloche et le commandant du CDIFC,
le Lcol Cameron, ont souligné dans leur discours la contribution du CDIFC aux
systèmes de recrutement, de sélection et d’instruction des FAC. Ils ont aussi mis
en évidence l’engagement continu de l’unité envers l’atteinte de l’excellence en
matière d’instruction dans les FAC. En cette même occasion, deux militaires (le
Ltv Lupton et l’Adj Poire) de longue date du CDIFC se sont vu remettre la première agrafe de leur Décoration des Forces canadiennes pour souligner leurs 22
années de service.

wenty Canadian Ranger patrols in First Nation communities across northern
Ontario received vital training and operational supplies during the first weekend
in March. The Rangers in northern Ontario operate in a vast area that covers over
40% of Ontario. Ranger Patrols are spread out over 450,000 square kilometres from
Manitoba in the west, to Hudson and James Bay and to Quebec in the east.
Seventeen of the patrols are only be accessible by aircraft or by the ice road network
which lasts about 6-8 weeks in winter. Temperatures in winter can hover between minus 40
to minus 50 Celsius and in many past re-supply missions there have been delays as aircraft
and vehicles have succumbed to the severe cold.
Three 53’ trailers left Borden with 34,000 pounds of equipment and headed for two airheads located at Pickle Lake and Timmins. Pickle Lake, which is about 400 kilometres
northwest of Thunder Bay and 1300 kilometres from Borden received supplies for 15 of the
20 patrols. Timmins, which is 700 kilometres north of Toronto was used to resupply the four
James Bay coastal communities and Constance Lake.
Chartered aircraft were used to supply each patrol with approximately 1700 pounds of
equipment that ranged from: socks, underwear, shovels, rations, cooking sets, pressure
cookers, ice rescue suits, personal floatation devices and portable toilets.
Behind the scenes was the quartermaster for the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (3
CRPG), Sergeant Kevin Kelly.
“There are a lot of moving pieces in this exercise,” said Sergeant Kelly. ”It was remarkable that we managed to deliver every single patrol’s supplies in two days. Usually the
extreme weather or a breakdown of a vehicle or aircraft would cause significant delays. I
was impressed that in some of the patrols I was only on the ground for 20 minutes as the
Rangers were very organized in unloading the supplies into waiting vehicles.”
“Every patrol received their supplies as scheduled except Attawapiskat,” said Captain
Rick Morse, Officer Commanding support company. “Unfortunately, one of our Rangers
passed away a few days prior and the funeral was scheduled for the same day of the re-supply. Out of respect for the Ranger’s family and the community we adjusted our timings and
flew in the next day. The delivery of the stores is only the end state of a major activity such
as a re-supply. There are a host of other tasks which need completing, such as quotes being
gathered, buying, taking delivery then sorting all the stores into manageable pallets in
preparation for the push north. Sergeant Kelly and his staff did an outstanding job in this
capacity. In the past, military and civilian patterned vehicles have been used to resupply the
Ranger communities. This process would sometimes take up to three weeks with a lot of

wear and tear on our vehicles. Unpredictable weather and the winter road system could also
be a negative factor in completing the resupply. This was the first year, less the three road
access communities, that the resupply was completed using air assets. This method of delivery mitigated the use of additional personnel and vehicles which normally would have been
exposed to longer periods of extreme weather and poor winter road conditions. Delivery via
air has proven to be an extremely efficient method.”
There are nearly 625 Rangers and 700 Junior Rangers located in 23 communities in
northern Ontario.

Dix sept des patrouilles
ne sont accessibles que par
la voie aérienne ou encore
par le réseau de routes de
glace, qui ne dure que de six
à huit semaines, durant
l’hiver. En hiver, la tempéra-
ture peut varier entre moins
40 et moins 50 degrés
Celsius, et il est arrivé à
plusieurs reprises, durant
des missions de réapprovisionnement, que les fournitures soient acheminées en
retard en raison d’une panne
d’aéronef ou de véhicule
causée par un froid extrême.

quitté la BFC Borden pour
se rendre à deux têtes de
pont aériennes situées l’une
à Pickle Lake et l’autre à
Timmins. Le canton de
Pickle Lake, qui se trouve à
environ 400 kilomètres au
nord est de Thunder Bay et à
1 300 kilomètres de la BFC
Borden, a reçu les fournitures qui allaient être
acheminées à 15 des 20
patrouilles. Les fournitures
destinées aux quatre collectivités côtières de la baie
James et à la bande du lac
Constance ont été acheminées depuis la ville de
Timmins, qui est située à
700 kilomètres au nord de
Toronto.
Des aéronefs affrétés ont
été utilisés pour livrer à chacune des patrouilles environ
1 700 livres de fournitures
de toutes sortes, comme des
chaussettes, des sous vêtements, des pelles, des
rations, des articles de cuisine, des autocuiseurs, des
combinaisons pour le sauvetage sur glace, des vêtements de flottaison individuels et des toilettes portatives.
À l’œuvre dans les
coulisses se trouvait le sergent Kevin Kelly, quartier
maître du 3e Groupe de
patrouille des Rangers canadiens (3 GPRC).
« Nous avons dû déplacer un grand nombre de
pièces durant la mission, » a
dit le sergent Kelly. « C’est
extraordinaire que nous
ayons pu livrer toutes les
fournitures en deux jours
seulement. Des conditions
météorologiques
très
sévères ou une panne de
véhicule ou d’aéronef
causent habituellement un
retard important dans la
livraison. J’étais impressionné, car à la base de certaines patrouilles, je ne suis
resté au sol que pendant 20
minutes. En effet, les
Rangers y étaient si bien
organisés qu’il ne leur a
fallu que ce temps pour sortir la marchandise de
l’aéronef puis la charger
dans des véhicules qui
étaient déjà sur place. »
« Chaque patrouille a
reçu les fournitures qu’elle
attendait comme prévu, sauf
celle d’Attawapiskat, » a
mentionné le capitaine Rick
Morse, commandant de
la companie de soutien.
« Malheureusement, l’un de
nos patrouilleurs est décédé
quelques jours avant la date
prévue pour la livraison, qui
était aussi la date prévue
pour les funérailles. Par
respect pour les membres de
la famille du patrouilleur
décédé et pour les membres
de sa collectivité, nous
avons reporté la livraison au
jour suivant. La livraison
des fournitures n’est que le
résultat d’une activité
importante comme le réapprovisionnement. Il y a une
foule d’autres tâches à
accomplir, par exemple les
appels de soumissions, les
achats, la réception de
toutes les fournitures, puis
leur tri et leur chargement
sur des palettes facilitant
leur manutention en vue de
leur transport vers le Nord.
Le sergent Kelly et les
membres de son équipe ont
fait un travail remarquable à
cet effet. Dans le passé,
nous utilisions des véhicules
militaires et des véhicules
de modèles employés chez
les civils pour réapprovisionner les patrouilles des
Rangers canadiens. Le réapprovisionnement pouvait
alors prendre jusqu’à trois
semaines et causait beau-
coup d’usure à nos
véhicules. Les changements
de conditions météorologiques imprévisibles et l’état du réseau de routes
d’hiver y faisaient parfois
obstacle. Cette année, nous
avons acheminé les fournitures par la voie aérienne,
sauf dans le cas des trois
collectivités accessibles par
la voie terrestre, et c’était
une première. Le transport
aérien a permis de réduire le
nombre de personnes et de
véhicules qui auraient normalement été exposés pendant une longue période à
des conditions météorologiques sévères et aux
risques que posent les routes
d’hiver en mauvais état. Il
s’est avéré un moyen fort
efficace d’assurer l’approvisionnement. »
Près de 625 membres des
Rangers et 700 membres des
Rangers juniors sont répartis
dans 23 collectivités situées
dans le Nord de l’Ontario.

Children’s Trout Fishing Derby
O
n Saturday, May 24 the
Base Borden Rod and
Gun Club will again be
hosting the Children’s Trout
Fishing Derby at the Catawampus
Pond.
This derby is open to the children of all Base personnel as well as
members of the Base Borden Rod
and Gun Club.
Start time of the derby will be at
0800 hours with registration by age
category (name and phone number)
for each contestant taking place at
the Sugar Shack, commencing at
0800 hours. There will be volunteers walking around the pond and
they will weigh the rainbow, brown
or speckled trout caught by the children and record the weight on the
registration sheet.
Fishing will run until 1130 hours
and prizes will be awarded at 1200
hours at the Sugar Shack. There
will be three prizes awarded in each
of the age categories: up to 6 years,
7 to 11 years, and 12 to 18 years of
age for those fisherpersons catching
the largest rainbow, brown or
speckled trout. Please note that only
the weights of the rainbow, brown
or speckled trout are eligible to be
recorded in determining the allocation of prizes.
The Club will be providing complimentary beverages and a choice
of either a hot dog or hamburger to
all contestants and their parents.
While the children do not require
a fishing licence, they must follow
the province of Ontario fishing regulations which state that a maximum of two trout only are to be in
their possession. An idea would be
to have the children use barbless
hooks so that the smaller catch can
safely be returned to the pond,
thereby keeping only that record
breaking Trout. The pond will be
stocked with lots of rainbow, brown
and speckled trout, so come out
with your fishing lines and some
wildly, wiggly, worms, NO live bait
is to be used, (reference should be
made to www.mnr.gov.on.ca subsection “BAIT” for detailed explanation of excluded live bait) to
hopefully catch some fish and have
a lot of fun.

closed to all fishing from the date of
stocking until the day of the
Children’s Trout Fishing Derby and

e Club de chasse et pêche de la BFC Borden tiendra encore une fois son tournoi
de pêche à la truite pour les enfants. L’activité aura lieu le samedi 24 mai, à l’étang Catawampus.
Le tournoi est ouvert aux enfants de tout le personnel de la Base ainsi qu’à ceux des
membres du Club de chasse et pêche.
Les participants pourront s’inscrire par catégorie d’âge (nom et numéro de téléphone)
dès 8 h, à la cabane à sucre, après quoi le tournoi débutera. Des bénévoles seront aux abords de l’étang; ils pèseront les truites arc-en-ciel, brunes et mouchetées pêchées par les
enfants et inscriront le poids sur la fiche d’inscription.
La pêche se terminera à 11 h 30, et les prix seront remis à 12 h à la cabane à sucre. Dans
chaque catégorie (6 ans et moins, 7 à 11 ans et 12 à 18 ans), on distribuera trois prix aux
pêcheurs ayant attrapé les plus grosses truites arc-en-ciel, brunes ou mouchetées. Veuillez
noter que seules les truites arc-en-ciel, brunes et mouchetées, peuvent être pesées et donner droit à un prix.
Le Club offrira gratuitement une boisson et un hamburger ou un hot-dog aux participants et à leurs parents.
