t’s nearly -30 C and pitch black outside, suddenly, a huge fire roars to life,
enveloping the imposing aircraft partially buried in the snow. The heat radiates outward, warming the night air up to 30-40 feet away, flames shoot up
into the sky illuminating the scene as thick black smoke billows across the night.
Sirens scream through the darkness as the students of the QL3 Fire Fighting
Course rush to the scene to extinguish the inferno.
This is the culmination of 8 months of intensive training for a group of men
who had, previously, little to no experience in fire fighting. Since August 2013,
these students have been busy learning, starting with the basics such as fire chemistry and the propagation of fire from a small stage to free burning. Next on the
agenda is flashover recognition, which is the near simultaneous ignition of most
of the combustibles in an enclosed area. The school has a special setup to allow
students to observe this without being physically in the room. The goal of the
training is to get the students comfortable with fire and being around it. Rope work
teaches students knots to raise and lower equipment, stretchers and casualties, and
to secure themselves to buildings or other heights.

déclenche et enveloppe l’imposant aéronef partiellement enfoui dans la neige. La chaleur
irradie vers l’extérieur et réchauffe l’air nocturne jusqu’à une distance de 30 à 40 pieds.
Les flammes s’élèvent dans le ciel et illuminent la scène alors qu’une fumée noire épaisse
ondoie dans la nuit. Les sirènes retentissent dans l’obscurité pendant que les stagiaires du cours
NQ3 de lutte contre les incendies se précipitent sur les lieux pour éteindre le brasier.
Voilà l’aboutissement de huit mois d’instruction intensive pour un groupe d’hommes qui ne
possédait presque aucune, voire absolument aucune, expérience dans la lutte contre les
incendies. Depuis août 2013, ces stagiaires ont été très occupés à apprendre, tout d’abord les
notions de base telles que la chimie du feu et la propagation d’un incendie (de l’incendie de
faible envergure jusqu’au feu non maîtrisé). Ils ont ensuite abordé les signes d’un embrasement
généralisé, qui est la quasi-inflammation simultanée de la plupart des combustibles se trouvant
dans un espace clos. L’École dispose d’une installation spéciale pour en faire l’observation sans
être physiquement dans la salle. Le but de l’instruction est de familiariser les stagiaires au comportement du feu et à leur présence autour du feu. Grâce au travail de corde, les stagiaires
apprennent à faire des nœuds leur permettant de lever et de descendre de l’équipement, des
civières et des victimes, et à s’attacher à des bâtiments ou à d’autres installations en hauteur.

Borden’s gymnasts represent
at provincials
A
Article submitted
pril 3-6th in Windsor, Ontario will be the
temporary home to 1000’s of Ontario’s best
male and female gymnasts. The 2014
Ontario Provincial Gymnastics Championships are set
to hit the stage and it is shaping up to be a very tough
competition. Borden Gymnastics has 9 talented athletes attending this meet. They have worked extremely
hard all season, have represented themselves and their
club proudly and now enter their biggest meet of the
year. Women’s Team leaders, Emily Flood (Level 7
age 17), and Sarah Carlton (Level 7 age 17) are both
top contenders in their category and are looking to
make their mark to finish off their gymnastics careers.
Hannah Carpentier-Wiggins (Level 5 age 11), Katelyn
Harrison (Level 5 age 9), and Sadie Finkelstein (alternate Level 5 age 9) make up Borden’s very strong
entry-level Provincial squad. Savanna Inman
(Canadian Pre-Novice age 9) is in a very elite and challenging category. On the men’s team - Ethan Farr
(level 2 age 9), and Colton Carpentier- Wiggins (Level
2 age 13+) have shown their best all year and look forward to Championships as does new team member
Aidan Scott (level 1 age 9). Best of luck to all Borden’s
Provincial athletes and coaches.

Des gymnastes de Borden représenteront
leur club aux championnats provinciaux

u 3 au 6 avril, la ville de Windsor en
Ontario accueillera quelque 1 000
gymnastes masculins et féminins
comptant parmi les meilleurs de la province. Les
Championnats de gymnastique ontariens de
2014 prendront alors la vedette, et ils s’annoncent comme une compétition des plus serrées. Le
Club de gymnastique de la BFC Borden
comptera 9 talentueux gymnastes qui participeront à cette rencontre. Ils et elles ont travaillé fort
durant toute la saison, ont bien performé et ont
fait honneur à leur club et se préparent à leur
plus grande rencontre de l’année. Les leaders de
l’équipe féminine, Emily Flood (niveau 7, 17
ans), et Sarah Carlton (niveau 7, 17 ans) sont
toutes les deux des favorites dans leur catégorie,
et espèrent bien laisser leur marque à la fin de
leur carrière en gymnastique. Hannah
Carpentier-Wiggins (niveau 5, 11 ans), Katelyn
Harrison (niveau 5, 9 ans), et Sadie Finkelstein
(remplaçante niveau 5, 9 ans) forment la très
forte escouade de débutantes au niveau provin-
cial. Savanna Inman (pré-novice canadienne, 9
ans) est pour sa part dans une catégorie d’élite où
les défis sont grands. Du côté masculin - Ethan
Farr (niveau 2, 9 ans) et Colton CarpentierWiggins (niveau 2,13 ans +) ont été au sommet
de leur forme toute l’année et ont bien hâte aux
championnats, tout comme le nouveau membre
de l’équipe Aidan Scott (niveau 1, 9 ans). Bonne
chance à tous les athlètes et entraîneurs de
Borden aux championnats provinciaux!

Jardin communautaire de la
BFC Borden
Vous venez d’être affecté à la BFC Borden ou vous y vivez, et vous
aimez jardiner? Pourquoi ne viendriez-vous pas faire pousser vos propres
légumes sur la base? Le personnel des FAC ainsi que les employés du
MDN intéressés ont en effet la chance de cultiver un jardin et de profiter
du plein air en louant une parcelle du Jardin communautaire de la BCF
Borden, qui se trouve près du bâtiment P-144, situé sur le chemin Dieppe.
La location d’une parcelle coûte 20 $, et l’argent aide à couvrir les frais
associés au jardin.

nother important factor is comfort with gear. “You’ve got your
gear on, your breathing apparatus
on, and you can’t just take it off. It’s to get
them to get past that urge,” explains Calian
Instructor, Kim Boudreau. “When you are
outside it’s not a big deal, but when you go
inside a burned building it’s a toxic atmosphere. It’s to make sure that they are comfortable being in those places, so once they
get over that, they are very excited and very
eager to learn. You find out very fast if you
have claustrophobia because you don’t have
the freedom to breathe.”
“Being able to regulate my breathing so
my air tank doesn’t expire before its intended is challenging,” commented student, Cpl
Nick Evans. “The adrenaline rush of running into a fire to save casualties or to put it
out, and the actual physical work of doing
so with all the extra gear on, dragging the
hose and all the gear we have to take inside,
along with the physical work inside is very
challenging. You have to regulate your
breath in order to make the tank last.”
Students practice their techniques on
structural fires set inside special training
buildings, on vehicle accidents and finally
on aircraft with simulated helicopter, jet and
Hercules type aircraft, the final challenges
before graduating as a fire fighter. “In theory when these guys get into a fire hall, they
should be able to get put on a truck and
understand if someone says, this is what I
want you to do, they know what they have
to do,” says Boudreau. “They would never
be left alone, there would be somebody
there all the time, but they know the very
basics of being a fire fighter in a fire hall.”
The aircraft fires burn with up to 1200
litres of fuel, and can get up to 1000 F, ten
times bigger than a structural fire. To fight
this kind of fire, the students start by sur-

Trucks (which they previously practiced
driving) that spray a blanket of foam onto
the aircraft from different angles to smother
the flames either in a rain down method or
hitting the sides of the plane itself to insulate the craft, and moving outward to push
the flame and heat away. Next it’s onto the
ground with hoses where they use the water
to roll the foam onto the left over flames. As
the foam starts to stick to the metal, it indicates the cooling of the fire so that the fire
fighters can make entry into the craft. The
students brace the wings so they don’t collapse, and tap on them with an axe head to
make sure they are safe to walk on to get to
the door.
Inside, the students have 3-4 Instructors
along for safety. They do a quick sweep for
casualties and make sure the fire is out.
Once the smoke has cleared they do a
methodical search and check everything.
“I think we all think we are lucky to have
the opportunity to do this. It’s rare to find a
job where you are happy to wake up every
morning and go to work,” commented student, Cpl Adam Totera. “I think we are all
pretty comfortable; we trust our gear, we
trust our instructors and we’ve done quite a
bit of training to get to this point. We have
the time to develop our skills; it’s a very
nurturing environment. All firefighting is a
challenge, but nothing we can’t overcome I
am sure.”

être apporté à l’intérieur – est également très
exigeant, tout comme le travail physique à
l’intérieur. Vous devez régulariser votre respiration pour faire durer le réservoir. »
Les stagiaires mettent leurs techniques en
pratique dans des incendies de structure produits à l’intérieur de bâtiments particuliers
pour l’entraînement, dans des accidents de
véhicules et enfin, dans des aéronefs pouvant être adaptés selon plusieurs configurations (hélicoptère, avion à réaction et
appareil de type Hercules), la dernière
épreuve avant d’obtenir le titre de pompier.
« En principe, quand ces
hommes entrent dans une
caserne, ils devraient être en
mesure de monter à bord d’un
camion et de comprendre si
quelqu’un dit “voilà ce que je
veux que vous fassiez”. Ils
sauront ce qu’ils doivent faire
», indique Boudreau.
« Ils
ne seront jamais laissés seuls,
il y aura toujours quelqu’un sur
place, mais ils connaissent les
fondements du métier de pompier dans une caserne. »
Les incendies d’aéronef
brûlent jusqu’à 1 200 litres de
carburant et peuvent atteindre
1 000 °F, ce qui est dix fois
supérieur à un incendie de bâtiment. Pour combattre ce type
de feu, les stagiaires doivent
d’abord entourer l’appareil à
l’aide de deux ou trois
véhicules d'intervention à
mousse (dont ils ont préalablement pratiqué la conduite) qui
pulvérisent une couche de
mousse sur l’appareil à partir de différents
angles pour étouffer les flammes soit au
moyen d’une méthode d’aspersion ou soit
en visant les côtés de l’appareil afin de
l’isoler, puis en se déplaçant vers l’extérieur
pour repousser les flammes et la chaleur.
Ensuite, au sol, on a recours à des tuyaux
qui déversent de l’eau pour balayer la
mousse vers les flammes restantes. Lorsque
la mousse commence à adhérer au métal,
cela indique que le brasier a refroidi et que
les pompiers peuvent entrer dans l’appareil.
Les stagiaires renforcent les ailes pour
empêcher qu’elles s’effondrent et les frappent à l’aide de la tête d’une hache pour
s’assurer qu’il est sécuritaire de marcher sur
celles ci et atteindre la porte.

de sécurité. Ils parcourent rapidement la
zone à la recherche de victimes et s’assurent
que le feu est éteint. Après que la fumée
s’est dissipée, ils font une recherche
méthodique et vérifient tout.
« Je crois que nous nous estimons tous
chanceux d’avoir cette possibilité. Il n’est
pas courant de trouver un emploi pour
lequel vous êtes content de vous lever et
d'aller travailler le matin », a expliqué le Cpl
Adam Totera, stagiaire. « Je pense que nous
sommes tous assez à l’aise; nous pouvons
nous fier à notre équipement, nous faisons
confiance à nos instructeurs et nous avons
suivi beaucoup d’instruction pour en arriver
à ce point. Nous avons le temps de développer nos capacités. C’est un environnement
stimulant. Toute lutte contre l’incendie
représente un défi, mais rien que nous ne
puissions surmonter, j’en suis certain. »
Une lueur dans la nuit
’aisance avec l’équipement est un
autre facteur d’importance. « Vous
portez votre équipement et votre
appareil respiratoire et vous ne pouvez tout
simplement pas le retirer. Il faut amener les
stagiaires à surmonter cette impulsion »,
explique l’instructeur de l’entreprise Calian,
Kim Boudreau. « À l’extérieur, ce n’est pas
si grave, mais dans un bâtiment partiellement incendié, l’atmosphère est toxique. Il
faut s’assurer qu’ils sont à l’aise de se trouver dans ces endroits pour qu’une fois qu’ils
ont surmonté cet obstacle, ils soient très ent-

hanks to the efforts of our photogenic firefighters, CFB Borden has made donations to
Soldier On and Op Hero from the sales of the
popular 2014 CFB Borden Fire Fighter Calendar.
Soldier On empowers retired and serving members of
the Canadian Forces with an illness or injury (visible or
non-visible) to accept their new normal by adopting an
active lifestyle through participation in physical, recreational or sporting activities.
Op Hero is a local organization that offers special
annual scholarships to provide funding of education for
the families and dependants of our troops. Both charities received $2584 each from the profit of the calendar
sales. “This is excellent, the awareness that the Fire
Hall has raised for us, and the money, will help us and
help our programs getting guys back into sports, physical fitness and recreational activities to promote recovery,” commented Sgt James MacIntyre from Soldier
On.
“I felt really privileged. I just moved to Borden and
it (scholarship) had been advertised in the paper that it
was coming up, and I had been accepted into Nursing
and I applied. It’s been a godsend for the 4 years that I
have been in school,” commented Op Hero recipient,
Stephanie Weatherbee. “My goal is once I’ve started
working, I’m going to give back to the Scholarship for
other people to have the opportunity that I’ve had. I will
be graduating in June, its scary and exciting all at
once.”
Thanks to all members of our community who purchased a calendar. Hopefully we will see more of the
fire fighters next year!

ous remercions nos pompiers photogéniques de la BFC Borden pour leurs dons
au programme Sans limites et à l’Op Hero, à l'occasion de la vente populaire du
calendrier 2014 du Service d’incendie de la BFC Borden. Le programme Sans
limites vise à aider les membres actifs et retraités des Forces canadiennes souffrant d'une
maladie ou d'une blessure (visible ou non) à accepter leur nouvelle réalité, en adoptant un
mode de vie actif grâce à des activités physiques, récréatives ou sportives.
Op Hero est un organisme local qui offre des bourses d'études annuelles spéciales aux
familles des militaires et à leurs personnes à charge afin de les aider à financer leurs études.
Les deux organismes de bienfaisance ont reçu chacun la somme de 2584 $, tirée du produit
des ventes du calendrier. « C’est une excellente chose. La sensibilisation prônée par la
caserne des pompiers et l’argent recueilli nous aideront et permettront à nos programmes
de favoriser à nouveau la participation de nos gars aux activités de loisir, de conditionnement physique et de sport, afin de promouvoir leur rétablissement », a commenté le Sgt
James MacIntyre, du programme Sans limites.
« Je me suis sentie vraiment privilégiée. Je venais juste de déménager à Borden et l’annonce (de la bourse) a été faite dans le journal; j’avais été acceptée en soins infirmiers, et
j’ai donc présenté une demande. Un cadeau du ciel pendant les quatre années de ma scolarité. Dès que je commencerai à travailler, je donnerai en retour au programme de bourses
afin que d’autres personnes comme moi puissent bénéficier du même privilège. J’obtiendrai
mon diplôme en juin. C’est à la fois effrayant et excitant en temps », a commenté Stephanie
Weatherbee, récipiendaire de l’Op Hero.
Merci à tous les membres de notre communauté qui ont acheté un calendrier. Nous
espérons voir davantage de nos pompiers l’année prochaine!

n the Air Force, each soldier, as they
climb the ranks from Private and up,
go through a series of leadership and
Air Environmental courses at the Air
Command Academy that act as a sort of
puzzle, adding more and more pieces, culminating in the Senior Air Supervisor
Course (SAS) where the big picture is finally clear.
The courses give them a sort of introduction to the Air Force, explaining the functioning of an Air Base, regulations, structure, ethics, history, doctrine and how it is
different from the Army or Navy. Each
course takes these soldiers into a deeper
level, allowing them to understand the how
and the why of what they do and giving
them a tool belt of resources to find the
answers they need. Leadership skills and
personal responsibility grow as each Airman
or woman progress through their careers.
Students of the SAS course are hand
picked by the Chief of the Air Force office
to be the NCM leaders of tomorrow’s Air
Force. This two-week course is designed to
look beyond the day to day, to look with a
strategic eye with a vision towards the
future. In order to accomplish this, senior
Air Force leaders come to the school and
present a discussion on the organization
from which they come, for example 1 CAD
Air, 2 CAD Air, Health Services, or the JAG
office amongst many others. This gives the
students an idea of what they do, and opens
the lines for networking. The floor is opened
up for questions and everyone gets a chance
to ask and to learn from the experienced
leaders.
“When you go through a situation where
you have the leaders of the Air Force in a
room and you are discussing policy, its
going to change how you think about things
for sure,” commented MWO Frank Dwyer
of the ACA. “You are getting to see the door
open just a little bit more, you are getting to
see how the decisions are made and the reasons why the decisions are made. Anytime
you get the chance to walk into that level of
a meeting or that level of a course, when
those people are speaking, you are obviously going to be better at the end of the day.
For me it was an eye opener to the level of
decision making in the Air Force.”
SAS participants are encouraged during
the course, to look inward and get to know
themselves, their personality and their leadership abilities. By knowing their strengths
and weaknesses, students will have a better
insight to their reactions to situations, and to
people and can use this information positively to help them become better leaders.
They continue to work with their peers in
syndicates, getting special projects where
they must work together to solve a problem
and present the conclusions to the group. At
the upper levels of leadership, if they don’t
have the answer they can pick up a phone
and ask for guidance and suggestions from
their peers. “I think its fantastic. It gives us
an opportunity to actually network,” says
MWO Dwayne Feltham of 8 Wing Trenton.
“Networking is important to today’s Air
Force, that’s how we get things done. We
rely on the experience of other people.”
“What they take away is that first of all,
we have gained a lot of experience throughout our years and they need to tap into that,
and that’s what we are trying to get them to
better understand. Also for them to see that
there are different opportunities out there,
but in order to tap into these opportunities
they need to keep on growing professionally,” commented the CWO of the RCAF,
CWO Young. “This course is to bring them
to a stage where they are thinking outside of
the box not necessarily as a SAR tech or an
MP, they are thinking more so of the institution, so this is what we are trying to do with
this, give them additional tools to think differently and to keep on moving the RCAF
forward.”

ans la Force aérienne, tous les soldats, à mesure
qu’ils gravissent les échelons, suivent une série
de cours de leadership et de cours propres à l’élément air à l’École du Commandement aérien qui forment
une sorte de casse-tête auquel de plus en plus de pièces sont
ajoutées, la dernière étant le Cours de chef supérieur (Air)
(CCSA), qui leur permet enfin de voir le tableau d’ensemble.
Ces cours leur fournissent en quelque sorte une introduction à la Force aérienne; on y explique le fonctionnement
d’une base aérienne, les règlements, la structure, l’éthique,
l’histoire, la doctrine et les différences par rapport à
l’Armée de terre et à la Marine. Chacun de ces cours permet
aux militaires d’approfondir leurs connaissances, et ainsi de
comprendre le comment et le pourquoi de ce qu’ils font, et
de se munir d’une panoplie de ressources pour trouver les
réponses dont ils ont besoin. Les compétences en leadership
et la responsabilité personnelle s’accroissent à mesure que
progresse la carrière des aviateurs et aviatrices.
Les stagiaires du CCSA sont soigneusement sélectionnés
par le Chef d’état-major de la Force aérienne pour devenir
les leaders des militaires du rang dans la Force aérienne de
demain. Ce cours de deux semaines est conçu pour aller audelà du quotidien, pour adopter une vision stratégique
tournée vers l’avenir. Pour ce faire, des cadres supérieurs de
la Force aérienne viennent à l’École faire un exposé sur leur
organisation d’appartenance, par exemple la 1 DAC, la 2
DAC, les services de santé, ou le Cabinet du JAG, parmi de
nombreux autres. Les stagiaires peuvent ainsi se faire une
idée de leur travail, et commencer à faire du réseautage. La
discussion est ensuite ouverte et tous ont la chance de poser
des questions et d’apprendre de leaders d’expérience.
« Lorsque vous avez l’occasion de discuter des politiques
avec les leaders de la Force aérienne, votre perception des
choses s’en trouve assurément changée », dit l’Adjum Frank
Dwyer de l’ECA. « La porte s’entrouvre juste un peu plus,
vous voyez alors la façon dont les décisions sont prises et
les raisons justifiant ces décisions. Chaque fois que vous
avez la chance d’assister à une réunion ou un cours de ce
calibre, d’entendre ce que ces personnes ont à dire, ça ne
peut qu’être bénéfique pour vous; pour ma part, j’ai beaucoup appris sur les niveaux de prise de décisions dans la
Force aérienne. »
Les participants au CCSA sont encouragés à faire une
introspection et à apprendre à mieux se connaître, à déterminer leur personnalité et leurs habiletés en matière de leadership. En connaissant leurs forces et leurs faiblesses, les
stagiaires peuvent mieux comprendre leurs réactions à des
situations et à des personnes, et peuvent mettre à profit cette
information afin de devenir de meilleurs leaders. Ils continuent de travailler avec leurs pairs en groupes d’études : des

de l’ARC. « Ce cours vise à les amener à penser de façon
novatrice, pas nécessairement du point de vue d’un
Tech SAR ou d’un membre de la PM, mais davantage du
point de vue de l’institution. C’est ce que nous essayons
d’accomplir grâce à ce cours, leur fournir des outils supplémentaires pour penser différemment et continuer de faire
progresser l’ARC. »

David Nicolle, a recent retiree of the Canadian
Armed Forces, was randomly selected as the grand
prize winner of last year’s National Contest
(“Conquer the Road Contest”) which ran from
February 15, 2013 to December 31, 2013. David
was the lucky winner out of 20 finalists that were
selected at random during the year. The Personal
Insurance Company has been proudly running
National Contests, which give away amazing prizes
for CANEX patrons every year for over 27 years.

As the winner of the contest, David won a car
that fit his lifestyle and had a choice between a

31 Svc Bn in the transportation industry and

GTA and David currently works as a Regional
Maintenance Manager for Trailer Wizards. When
asked about his home and auto insurance, David
said that he has been happily insured with The

because on this course a sailor has

Commandant,
Lieutenant-Colonel Wortman, he

it is the Air Force Core Values
Award, an amused grin on his face
as well.
So how did a sailor come to
receive this award? This historical
quirk is the result of a unique
moment in time. CFSATE has conducted Imagery Technician training in Borden for over a quarter of
a century. Since the construction
of Croil Hall in 1952, the eastern
wing of the lower floor has been
home to the imagery technician
trade.
LS Upshall and his fellow graduates mark the end of that era. In
March 2013 the Imagery
Occupation officially transitioned
from the RCAF to ADM(PA) and
plans began to facilitate that transition. This QL3 serial was the last
one conducted by CFSATE. The
last year has been a roller coaster
ride of negotiations, meetings, and
revised plans. While exciting,
there still remain a lot of
unknowns to be decided.
After a touching and emotional
few words from the Commandant
to say goodbye to the former air
trade, a sense of accomplishment
and moment was felt by the gradu-
ates. In a variety of uniforms they
hugged, congratulated each other,
and met with loved ones. The
lights then dimmed, and the
assembled dignitaries, graduates
and staff posed for one last historic
course group photo. As the flash
fired and chuckles were heard,
there was an air of uncertainty
about the future. One thing is
known for certain however, it will
likely be some time before another
sailor wins the Air Force Core
Values Award at CFSATE.

rassemblement de fin de cours du NQ3 – 1302 Technicien en imagerie de l’École
de technologie et du génie aérospatial des Forces canadiennes (ETGAFC). Le
matelot de 1re classe Upshall était la troisième personne en partant de la droite, au premier
rang de sa classe, au garde-à-vous. Il a répondu « Monsieur » et s’est avancé, un sourire aux
lèvres. La situation était ironique car, pour ce cours, c’est un membre de la Marine royale

Lavallee, le commandant de la 16e Escadre, le lieutenant-colonel Rodgers, ainsi que l’adjudant-chef de la 16e Escadre, l’adjudant-chef Andrews. Tous étaient là pour assister à cet
événement historique.
Le matelot de 1re classe Upshall s’est approché du commandant de l’ETGAFC, le lieutenant-colonel Wortman, il le salue et recule. Quelques blagues sont échangées, et l’adjudant-maître West (adjudant-chef intérimaire de l’École) ne tarde pas à lui rappeler, avec un
sourire aux lèvres lui aussi, qu’il s’agit du prix des valeurs fondamentales de l’Aviation
royale canadienne (ARC).
Comment se fait-il qu’un marin ait pu remporter ce prix? Cette situation insolite découle
d’une circonstance unique dans l’histoire de l’École. L’ETGAFC offre le cours de technicien en imagerie à Borden depuis plus d’un quart de siècle. Depuis la construction de l’édifice Croil Hall, en 1952, la partie est de l’étage inférieur est occupée par le groupe professionnel des techniciens en imagerie.
Le matelot de 1re classe Upshall et ses confrères diplômés vivent la fin de cette époque.
En mars 2013, la responsabilité du groupe professionnel des techniciens en imagerie est
officiellement passée de l’ARC au sous-ministre adjoint (Affaires publiques), et des plans
ont été élaborés pour faciliter la transition. Ce cours de NQ 3 était le dernier donné par
l’ETGAFC. La dernière année a été une frénésie de négociations, réunions et plans successifs. C’était passionnant, mais il reste encore beaucoup de décisions à prendre.
Après quelques mots touchants et émouvants du commandant pour marquer la fin du

Les lumières se sont éteintes, et l’assemblée de dignitaires, de diplômés et de membres du
personnel a pris la pose pour une dernière photo de groupe historique. Sous les flashes et
les rires, un sentiment d’incertitude sur l’avenir régnait parmi les participants. Une chose
est sûre, cependant : ce n’est pas demain qu’un autre marin remportera le prix des valeurs
fondamentales de l’Aviation royale canadienne à l’ETGAFC.

Thrift Store
Under New Management
This January, the Thrift Store was transferred back to
Base Chaplain Services as the historical initiators of this
facility on the Base. Originally an initiative of St Joseph’s
Chapel, the Thrift Store was run first by the Catholic
Women’s League and for the last 10 years by the 13th St
Joseph’s Scouts. The Thrift Store will continue to support
the 13th Scouts, but will also add a wider Borden
Community focus.
The Thrift Store will continue to stock high quality donations and items, especially children’s clothing, and items
that would be useful to young families and soldiers visiting
for courses. Other donations we cannot keep, will be donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Helping
Hands Thrift Store in Angus. Your donations are valuable to
us, and they will be promptly received and sorted each day
by our volunteers.
The Thrift Store will add an additional element of focus
to serving the wider Borden Community. Service groups
and clubs could assist with the Spring and Fall outdoor tent
sales, and the 13th Scouts will continue to sell items on their
usual Tuesday evenings.
Funds raised from the Thrift Store will be accounted for
in the Non Public Funds system as a trust fund, and these
funds will be used to develop an Emergency/
Compassionate Fund to assist families in need. Funds may
also be used to support other chaplain community events
and activities.
Mark Your Calendars!
We will have the capacity that if people wish to make
cash donations to the work of the Thrift Store and in support
of the Base Chaplain Fund, tax receipts will be offered.
To increase our ability to serve the Borden Community,
our new store hours will include also being open in the day
time:
Monday to Friday (0800 – 1100 hrs),
Tuesday (1830 – 2030 hrs, 13th Scouts)
1st Saturday of each month (1000 – 1400 hrs, 13th
Scouts).
These new hours will better facilitate the needs of young
families, as they drop off their children at child care or
attend BFRC functions – visit the Thrift Store for excellent
discounts.

d’occasion
Nouvelle direction
En janvier dernier, les Services de
l’aumônerie de la Base ont repris le
contrôle du Magasin d’articles d’occasion, établissement qu’ils avaient euxmêmes créé au départ. Une initiative
de la chapelle St. Joseph, le Magasin a
d’abord été sous la tutelle de la Ligue
des femmes catholiques, puis il est
passé aux mains du 13e groupe de
scouts Saint Joseph. Aujourd’hui,
l’établissement continue de soutenir
les scouts, tout en se concentrant
davantage sur la communauté de la
BFC Borden.
Le Magasin continuera de recueillir
des dons et des articles de grande qualité, notamment des vêtements pour
enfant ainsi que des articles qui pourraient être utiles aux jeunes familles et

aux militaires venant suivre des cours.
Les autres dons qu’il ne pourra
accepter seront remis à l’Association
canadienne du diabète ou au magasin
d’aubaines Helping Hands à Angus.
Vos dons nous sont précieux; nos
bénévoles en effectuent le tri rapidement lorsqu’ils les reçoivent.
Le Magasin concentra ses efforts
sur un nouvel élément, soit la communauté de la BFC Borden dans son
ensemble. Les groupes d’entraide et
les clubs pourront prêter main forte
lors des ventes de printemps et d’automne sous le chapiteau. Quant au 13e
groupe de scouts Saint-Joseph, il continuera de vendre ses articles le mardi
soir, comme d’habitude.
Les dons en argent que récolte le
Magasin seront dorénavant comptabilisés dans un fonds en fiducie, dans le
système des Fonds non publics. Ils
serviront à créer une ressource en cas
d’urgence ou pour des raisons familiales, afin de venir en aide aux familles
dans le besoin. Ils pourront également
être utilisés pour soutenir d’autres

(advanced digital photography course)
Are you interested in improving your photographer skills? The Borden Family Resource
Centre may have something interesting for you: Introduction to Lighting. This course will
be held every Wednesday night beginning May 7, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The course will cover:
• Constant artificial lighting
• Use of accessory flash (on-camera)
• Use of single and multiple off-camera flash
• Introduction to studio lighting
• Light shaping tools
• Some compositional instruction
Course duration:
•6 weeks; 1 evening/week; 3 hours per class.
Cost:
$162 for CAF Members and their immediate families, DND, BFRC, CFHA and PSP

Requirements for the course :
• A Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) Camera with a compatible accessory flash.

• Related experience with children and/or youth;
• Ability to communicate effectively in both French and English;
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
• Valid First Aid/CPR;
• Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of individuals and families affiliated to
the Canadian Forces; and
• Prepared to work flexible hours with short notice.

of Angus,
passed away peacefully at Royal
Victoria Regional Health Centre
Barrie, ON on Sunday, March 30th
2014 in his 52nd year. Andy owned and
operated “Andrew of Angus Catering”
and was a devoted, proud member of the
Angus Lions Club for 24 years. Beloved Husband of
Liz. Loving Father of Katrina (Paul), Sarah and Emma.
Dearest Son of Ricki Smeulders and the late Joe
Smeulders. Cherished Son-in-law of Herb and Louise
Robinson. Lovingly remembered by his Sister Bonita
(Gary Campbell). Sadly missed by Sister-in-law Judy
Richardson (Dave) and Brother-in-law Andrew
Robinson. Andy will be sadly missed and always
remembered by his many Nieces, Nephews, relatives
and friends. At Andy’s and the family’s request, cremation has taken place. Friends may pay their respects at
