In a decimal, the leading digit is the first nonzero digit at the left. EXAMPLE Technology 3 Rounding to the Leading Digit Music A guitar was created that is 0.0003937 inch long. Round the length of the guitar to the place value of the leading digit. Solution The first nonzero digit at the left of 0.0003937 is 3, and it is in the ten-thousandths’ place. You should round the length to the nearest ten-thousandth. 0.0003937 ■Music This tiny guitar was created as a fun way to demonstrate technology for making very small objects. If the size of most human cells is 0.00003937 inch, which is larger, the guitar or the cell? 3 is in the ten-thousandths’ place. Because 9 is to the right of the ten-thousandths’ place, round 3 up to 4. ANSWER The length of the guitar rounded to the place value of the leading digit is 0.0004 inch.
