Celebrate Dad's Day with ParentDish! JOYSTIQ MASSIVELY WOW INSIDER WII FANBOY PSP FANBOY XBOX360 FANBOY WEB The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin gear enchants, part 1 Posted Apr 2nd 2008 11:30AM by Elizabeth Wachowski Filed under: Items, Guides, Enchants, (Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It A few months back, I did a rogue column on how rogues can enhance their gear with enchantments, gems, armor kits and the like. Well, it's time for paladins to get a similar guide -- in three different forms! Yes, since paladins have three main specs for three different roles, they need some wildly different enchantments. Today, we'll look at abovethe-belt enhancements for a regular ol' endgame healing paladin, soon to be followed by prot and ret recommendations. (Shockadins, just grab the caster junk like usual.) Head Glyph of Renewal : This item, available for 90g once you get revered with Honor Hold or Thrallmar, gives you a onetime boost to your head item's healing and mp/5. Revered with HH/Thrall isn't too hard, and you need all the mp/5 you can get, so pick this up if you're planning on any serious healing. 10/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Glyph of the Gladiator: On the other hand, if you're the arena type and find yourself a bit lacking in the two key PVP stats, you might want to pick up this stam/resil item from revered with Shattered Sun Offensive. It's pretty useless for PVE, though, so save it for your _____ Gladiator's set piece. 3/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. WOW INSIDER FEATURES Shoulders Inscription of the Oracle: Unfortunately for you indecisive types, you need to pick Aldor or Scryer to get these shoulder enhancements. Luckily for you indecisive types, both enchants have the same stats, just in different proportions. Lazy Scryers can pick up this enchant on the cheap at the Scryer bank for 2 Arcane Runes. It doesn't give you any healing stats, but since pally mana regen is entirely dependent on mp/5, it's worth it for the long fights. 7/10 PVE, 5/10 PVP. Inscription of the Orb: We're actually yoinking this one from the casters. Scryers are big fans of crit rating, and as most healing pallies get mana returned for crit heals and tend to heal single targets, crit rating is important for us. Just make sure you're not neglecting other stats ... 7/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Greater Inscription of the Oracle: When you move up to exalted with either side, however, it's time to ditch the crit in favor of this inscription if you're a PVEer. Crits are too unreliable to be used as a true mana regen method in long boss fights. The healing is a nice addition to the mp/5 on this item. 10/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Greater Inscription of the Orb : But if you're still stuck on crit, you can upgrade your old Orb to this one, which adds dam/heal to spell crit. This is particularly good for healadins who like to throw out some damage in their spare time. 8/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Inscription of Faith: The Aldor favor raw healing over crit or mana regen, and it shows in their item selection. Toss another 29 healing onto the pile for the price of 2 Fel Armaments. 8/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Greater Inscription of Faith: Very similar to the Greater Inscription of the Oracle, but you lose 2mp/5 and gain 11 healing. It's tough to decide which is superior, so make your choice based on the other item rewards for the factions and not these inscriptions. 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Greater Inscription of Discipline : Like the orb, except it trades in crit for damage and thus sucks a bit more for pallies. 5/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Cloak Subtlety: Of all the (relatively bad) healer choices for cloak enchants, this is probably the best. Most paladins don't have too much of a threat problem, considering, y'know, that our healing spells give off half the threat of others, but it can't hurt to have a little bit more. 5/10 PVE, 0/10 PVP. Major Resistance: This is literally your only choice as a PVPer, unless you really like dodge rating or have a burning desire for more armor. It can help against caster teams (or caster mobs) without much penetration, but prepare to shell out a boatload of cash for the primals. 4/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Chest Magister's Armor Kit: For those of us who are cheap, the Magister's Armor Kit is a good placeholder to give a bit of extra mana regen when you're looking to upgrade to a better piece of armor. It can't compare to the real enchantments for these four slots, though. 4/10 PVE, 4/10 PVP. Major Resilience: 15 resilience isn't that much, but it's pretty cheap, and the other PVP options (health? stats? mana? ) don't work very well for healadins. 2/10 PVE, 8/10 PVP. Exceptional Health: Mana is better for PVE. Resilience is better for PVP. And Large Brilliant Shards are expensive. Sure, health is always nice, but unless someone's handing these out for free, pass on it. 3/10 PVE, 5/10 PVP. Restore Mana Prime: If you're about to argue with me that 100 mana should be here instead, I will note that there are very few dungeons, arenas, battlegrounds, or raid encounters that last less than two minutes. This is cheap and indispensable for PVE and (slightly less so) for PVP. 10/10 PVE, 8/10 PVP. Bracers Major Intellect: There are a lot of good choices for bracer enchants. Of the top four, this is probably the least useful. Int is nice, and this is inexpensive, but when you have mp/5 and healing itself as options, there's no point in going for this one. 6/10 PVE, 6/10 PVP. Fortitude: Stam, stam, stam -- how PVPers love you. But stam is relatively cheap in TBC, and it's a lot harder to get some good healing and mp/5 options. Even PVPers might want to consider the other enchants, particularly considering the cost of the mats here. 4/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Restore Mana Prime: 6mp/5 yet again. This is slightly more valuable in PVE, where paladins need to stack mp/5 for long fights where the tank's taking severe damage. It's really a tossup between this and healing, though, so consider what you need the most. 9/10 PVE, 8/10 PVP. UPCOMING EVENTS EVENT DATE WSG weekend 6/13 - 6/16 Darkmoon Faire (Elwynn) 6/9 - 6/15 Superior Healing: 30 heal is a lot to put on an item with as small a stat budget as bracers. This is one of the best bang for your bucks in the game, particularly if you're an herbalist and are swimming in Primal Lifes. 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza SUN 2p - 4p Midsummer Fire Festival 6/21 - 7/5 Stay tuned for the next installment, where we'll take care of hand, leg, foot, weapon and shield enchants, and also do a quick overview of healing gems. If you really aren't tanking very much, the situation where you need to tank adds is one where you can swap out your regular cloak for something that doesn't have subtlety on it. Whether you're getting any milage out of the enchant normally (usually it's the DPS, not the healers, who are pushing the aggro envelope) is a separate question, but if you would benefit from it normally I don't think that one limited situation justifies avoiding it on your everyday gear. That point aside, DPS casters and healadins both have issues with the cloak enchant. My mage has spell penetration because it's the least useless to mages (still pretty useless, I'm debating switching to armor), but you could make the argument for dodge rating, steelweave, or even agility instead on a Pally. Tanks, melee, and hunters get useful back enchants but everyone else is pretty much left out in the cold. 4 -02-2008 @ 12:57PM kapowaz said... Definitely agree with the above posters; holy paladins are in dire need of a viable cloak enchant. I'm surprised it's still not been addressed given how head/leg enchants were taken care of with the introduction of TBC. Reply 4 -02-2008 @ 1:39PM Dakira said... I'm just bored at work... but since you were mentioning everything above the waist you might have added the ring enchant. Yes its true due to the amount of body hair some people might think my knuckles scrape on the ground but I'd like to assure everyone that in the interest of keeping wowinsider out of the gutter, I do like to keep my hands above the waist. Boy! That should open me up to all kinds of comments. But seriously if your like me and a holy paladin who happens to be an enchanter throw the healing ring enchant on your fingers, its cheap enough even if you don't plan on keeping your rings that long! Reply 11 71 4 Adam Holisky It's hardly necessary, but it's a nifty little buff, be it its threat modifier or damage reduction. =) 10 19 39 Zach Yonzon For fights where I need to out-threat other people or healers (like the Vashj example above another example is Kael, where I liked to have healing-aggro on the phoenixs before the druid picked them up), having RF on is important. For fights where reducing incoming damage is important and they aren't heal-threat sensitive (for example, Gorefiend and Bloodboil), the reduced damage is nifty. 9 46 Eliah Hecht 9 Actually, more often than you'd think. I've got a cookie-cutteresque build of 42/19, and as such have 3 points in Imp RF - that is, increasing that effect of RF's threat modifier, but also reducing damage coming in by 6%. 8 Daniel Whitcomb 8 jaxson_bateman said... 7 Cmts 12 4 -02-2008 @ 1:52PM Class Columns 6 Posts 70 4 -08-2008 @ 3:03AM Rastas said... In arena a holy paladin need to use Holy Light a lot and paladins don't possess a good mana regeneration, for that reason and the multiples ways of lose mana in the hands of the enemy (mana burn, viper sting, drain mana) the paladin need a good mana pool. For that reason and in my experience a holy paladin needs more intellect (mana) than healing bonus and of course a good amount of spell crit. JOYSTIQ MASSIVELY WOW INSIDER WII FANBOY PSP FANBOY XBOX360 FANBOY WEB The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin gear enchants, part 2 Posted May 28th 2008 9:30PM by Elizabeth Wachowski Filed under: Paladin, Guides, Classes, Enchants, (Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It In my last Light and How to Swing It, I covered some good enchants for the upper part of an endgame healing paladin -- the head, shoulders, cloak, chest and bracers. Now it's time to head below the belt (har) and take care of hand, ring, leg, foot, weapon and shield enhancements. Okay, hands and rings aren't technically below the blt, but I ran out of room for them last time. Gloves Major Healing: As a holy paladin, you're all about healing. Whether you focus on PVE or PVP, more raw plus healing is always an excellent choice. The only drawback here is that the mats are pretty pricey. 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Blasting: It doesn't sound like a paladin enchant, but Blasting is an inexpensive alternative to Major Healing for healadins. Spell crit isn't quite as good as it used to be, due to the Illumination nerf, but it's still useful -- particularly if your gear lacks crit. WOW INSIDER FEATURES Rings Healing Power : First off, ring enchants are enchanter-only, and enchanting a ring immediately soulbinds it. That means that unless you have enchanting as one of your professions, you're out of luck. But just in case you do grind your way up through the grueling leveling process of enchanting, you get the ability to give yourself an extra +40 healing by enchanting both your rings. Like we said before, raw +healing is one of the best stats for healers and scales well with gear. 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Stats: For an alternative ring enchant, you can check out stats. If you're not purely a healing paladin and like to do a little bit of everything, stats might be an option, particularly since it's affected by Blessing of Kings. A commenter on the last installment noted that they liked using stats for leveling and grinding, since it effectively made their char a few levels higher. I'd consider this more for PVP than PVE just because of the extra emphasis on stam stacking in PVP. 5/10 PVE, 6/10 PVP. Legs Silver Spellthread: The tailor-created spellthreads are the leg option of choice for casters and healers. (Tanks and DPSers have the leatherworking-made leg armor.) This is the non-epic option, made by the simple combination of a rune thread and 5 Primal Life. Many tailors make this to level up, so you'll probably be able to get it done with no crafter's fee or buy it complete for less than the cost of mats. 8/10 PVE, 8/10 PVP. Golden Spellthread: To quote the Wowhead comments on this one, "I'm posting in an epic thread!" This upgrade to Silver requires 10 Primal Life and an increasingly -easy-to-get Primal Nether. Since your tailor needs to be exalted with Aldor to make these, you'll probably have to pay a crafter's fee (as you should.) If you feel like complaining about the Primal Nether requirement, please head over to the Dungeons and Raids forums, where they will call you a casual and punch you in the throat. Or just buy one at the AH. 10/10 PVE, 10/10 PVP. Boots: Edited to add: Comments and Armories have convinced me that Boar's Speed, rather than Vitality, is the premier PVE boot enchant. Boar's Speed : Boots are confusing. There are lots of good PVP options, but little that's great for PVE casters. Boar's Speed is expensive but very helpful for PVP, as it combines two essential elements -- stam and movement speed increase. Also useful in the many PVE encounters where you need to run out of/into/in circles around some sort of effect. Note that the speed increase does NOT stack with the similar increase from certain meta gems.6/10 PVE 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Fortitude: Oh joy, more stam. It's up to you whether the 3 extra stam is worth forgoing the movement speed increase from Boar's Speed, but like Silver Spellthread, this is a popular way to level enchanting and you may be able to get it done free/cheap. If you're a PVPer who already has the speed increase meta gem, this is your best option. 5/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Surefooted: As a non-PVPer, I'm not sure how the 5% chance to resist roots and snares stacks up against the guaranteed stam/speed increase from the other boot enchants. It is incredibly costly, though. Anyone care to enlighten me on what they think this should be rated? 1/10 PVE, ?/10 PVP. Vitality : This is actually pretty interesting. It's an early 60s enchant with low mat requirements that restores 4mp/5 and 4hp/5. However, the formula is an incredibly rare random world drop, so you may be paying out the nose to find someone to do it for you. There's also a BOP version now that drops off Kael'Thas in MgT, which should have lowered prices a bit. The clear best choice for PVE, unless you're in an encounter that prizes mobility or stam. 10/10 PVE 8/10 PVE, 7/10 PVP. Weapons Major Healing: We're all using one-handers and shields, right? Okay, this is a darn good enchant. As we said before, healing is the backbone of healers (durrrrr), and while it's pricey, it's probably going to be your best option for PVP ... and probably for PVE too. 9/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Major Intellect: It looks nice, but yodamc2 on the Wowhead forums calculated that it's a lot better to replace your healing/int gems with Int gems until you get 30 Int and then just take the Major Healing. He adds that it's only worth it if you have 2200 healing and run out of mana every fight, which is ... unlikely. 5/10 PVE, 5/10 PVP. UPCOMING EVENTS Spellsurge: I love these sorts of enchants. Spellsurge, as noted, has a 3% chance on spellcast to restore 100 mana over 10 seconds to all party members. However, recent calculations suggest that it's actually a much higher chance with a 50 sec hidden cooldown. It's super-useful, particularly if you have multiple casters in a group with this weapon ... but it puts a hit on your individual heals. So what to do ? Elitist Jerks recommends that you get two healing weapons and put this on on and Major Healing on the other. Then use a weapon swap mod like Caster Weapon Swapper to swap to your plus healing weapon after Spellsurge procs for the duration of the hidden cooldown. Presto! Best of both worlds! 9/10 PVE, 6/10 PVP. EVENT DATE WSG weekend 6/13 - 6/16 Darkmoon Faire (Elwynn) 6/9 - 6/15 Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza SUN 2p - 4p Shields Midsummer Fire Festival 6/21 - 7/5 Intellect: Pretty simple, 12 extra int. Good if you're running OOM or need a slight boost of all those int -related stats. I'd pick it for PVE, simply because it's the best of bad options and PVP has better choices. 7/10 PVE, 6/10 PVP. Worldwide Invitational in Paris 6/28 - 6/29 Major Stamina: No more stam enchants ... please ... I've run out of things to say ... 6/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. BlizzCon 2008 in Anaheim, CA Resilience: It's really difficult to say whether stam or resilience are better unless you know your particular stats. If you're at 490 resil, go for stam ... if you've got enough health to double as a tank, put this on your shield. It's generally assumed that you want to mix the stats until you hit the resilience cap, and then go for stam. If you're a PVEer, come closer so I can smack you for considering this. 2/10 PVE, 9/10 PVP. Resistance: In general, the multi-resistance enchants and gems aren't useful unless you're tanking or off-tanking. Even in PVP, it's better to have resistance or something you can swap in that's useful against a particular school of magic than have a generalized low resistance level. 1/10 PVE, 3/10 PVP. Reply 5-29-2008 @ 2:29AM Elizabeth Wachowski said... Because a column covering all enchants for all specs would be ten thousand words long and I would probably jump off a bridge after writing it. Prot pallies will get a guide next, as will ret pallies -- after I consult with someone who's an experienced retadin, as I have little experience with that particular spec. Arg, I pretty much agree with Duub here -- stam is on almost every piece of gear already, and while certain fights require more stam than others and may need another set of gear, most PVEers will want to enchant for healing and regen if they're available on their primary equipment. A quick look at two of Deus Vox's healing pallies shows that they enchant and socket for healing, spell crit, regen, haste and int -- the only stam enchant is Boar's Speed on their boots. 5-29-2008 @ 2:34AM Urdla said... Because this one is about heal-paladins... 7 5-29-2008 @ 4:20AM Argent said... as gear progresses, you can be assured of pretty much one thing: you will get less and les stam on your gear. look at all the new T6 set pieces -- they drop nearly 10 stam per piece over the non-set pieces used previously. while i would never socket for stam, enchants are cheap in that regard. personally, i find enchanting int to be far more wasteful. you should not ever have issues with the size of your mana pool and the amount of healing and crit you get is utterly trivial. whereas 180 hp can be the difference between a living or dying on quite a few fights. 8 5-29-2008 @ 2:55AM Draugir said... I disagree with the Vitality > Boar's Speed. If you are doing any raid encounter that requires movement, Boar's Speed will always be better. You won't need the mp5 from Vitality once you are past Kara anyways. Reply 9 5-29-2008 @ 3:35AM Dan said... But even if it does you'd probably still be better off with any of the other enchants. Boar's Speed will likely give you more mobility in the long run. I try and put resistance where I can, on the cloack, the shield the shoulders. The only flasks I use are chromatic wonder (and sometimes distilled wisdom if I really need a big mana-pool). To add I eat the resistance food and this all gives me a nice base resist. The BT neck and cloak give me plenty shadow resist and fire/forst aura for those moments, some arcane gear (ring/cloak) etc. etc. Allways top 3 healer and mostly the one taking least damage. Never any mana trouble and +2200 heal. And not one part of T6 (yet). Resist is underrated. 12int is easy to come by or miss, resist is rare, enough said. Reply 16 5-29-2008 @ 7:55AM Unknown said... Dead wrong on Vitality being better than Boars PVE. Two words "Doom Fire" do Arcy and tell me vitality is better. or even Gruul for that mater. Also considering chain poting is 100mp5 (add another 40 if you have imp alchy stone), wisdom is 40, oil is 15, flask 25, and 8 from food; right there you have 188mp5 before any gear or a Shaman or Shadow priest in group. So at the end of the day Vitality adds about 1% to your casting mana regen. Simple reason why boars is better, YOU are a healer, you have no instant spells, when you move you can't heal, moving faster gets you back to healing quicker.
