Lessons on How to Protect Yourself
Identity theft is among the fastest growing crimes
in the United States. The Federal Trade
Commission estimates that nearly 9 million
Americans become the victim of identity theft
each year. Unfortunately, many of these crimes
are not detected until it is too late and the victim’s
name and credit have been tarnished. Here at
Hickam FCU we take identity theft seriously and
take many precautions to help protect our
members. Here are some ways you can help
protect yourself from identity theft:
Don’t Give Your Number to Strangers.
Keep all identification numbers to yourself or
limit the amount of people whom you share this
information with. These numbers include your
social security, driver’s license, date of birth and
Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you
must give out these numbers, know who you are
sharing the information with and the reason it is
necessary.
Shred It!
Get into the habit of shredding all personal
documents before tossing them out. That includes
all bank and credit card statements, pre-approval
letters, tax documents, and ATM or debit receipts.
Thieves will go to extreme lengths to obtain
information they could profit from, even if that
means digging through your garbage.
Online Banking is your Friend.
Sign-up for online banking whenever possible. If
your account has been compromised, the
fraudulent charges can be detected sooner because
online banking gives you the opportunity to view
your transactions on a daily basis rather than
waiting for your monthly statement in the mail.
This gives you the chance to stop fraud as soon as
it starts rather than weeks or months later.
No Phishing Allowed!
There are several ways you can become a victim
of a phishing scam, but if you know the signs you
can stop it before it starts. If you receive emails or
Where’s the Snail Mail?
Remember, the only thing worse than getting your
credit card statement in the mail is not getting
your credit card statement in the mail. Be
suspicious if your credit card or Hickam FCU
monthly statements stop coming. This could be a
sign that someone has taken them from your
mailbox or you may be a victim of mail diversion
fraud. Mail diversion fraud is when an individual
forges your signature on a change-of-address form
in order to get your mail diverted to another
location. Contact your credit card company and
credit union if you are missing statements and
contact your local post office if you stop receiving
mail altogether.
For more information on how to protect yourself
from becoming a victim of identity theft or if you
have reason to believe your identity or financial
accounts have been compromised, visit the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ID Theft
website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft.

Air Force Week
Honolulu
Celebrating 60 Years
This September marks the 60th anniversary of the Air Force
as an independent arm of the U.S. military. To celebrate this
momentous occasion, Honolulu was selected as one of only six
cities to host Air Force Week.
The theme for this year is “Heritage to Horizons,” which is a
celebration of the Air Force’s anniversary, its history and its
future as the world’s leading Air Force.
Air Force Week begins September 7th with a proclamation
ceremony at Honolulu Hale by Mayor Mufi Hannemann and
ends on September 15th with a spectacular “Thunderbirds” show
along the shores of Waikiki Beach.
For up-to-date information on all Air Force Week activities

New ATM
Unveiled at
Kuntz Mini Mall
Hickam FCU is bringing more convenience to our members by
continuing to expand our ATM network. Our latest ATM addition is
in the brand new Kuntz Mini Mall located at 1756 Kuntz Ave. on
Hickam AFB. This is a great and convenient location, not only
because of all the amenities the Kuntz Mini Mall has to offer, but
it’s also open 24 hours a day.
Hickam FCU would like to congratulate the winners of our ATM
Cash & Win Contest held during the Kuntz Mini Mall grand
opening. Phillip Stocks, George Davis and Marita Andrews each
won a $100 AAFES gift card.

were delighted to
get a visit from
Sammy Rabbit,
thanks to the
support of the
Airman & Family

and a donation from
Hickam FCU. The
children were
treated to stories,
singing, dancing
and they each got to take home a music CD featuring songs about
leadership and smart money management. Sammy Rabbit makes
stops at schools all across the country teaching children good habits
and the importance of saving money.

at Ho’omaluhia
Botanical
Gardens in
Kaneohe. This
annual event
brings together families of Hickam AFB for a memorable day of
food, fun and fishing. This year, 120 children ages 5 to 12 and
their parents gathered along the shores of the lake at Ho’omaluhia
where they caught colorful fish using bamboo-fishing poles. The
children and their parents also enjoyed a scrumptious lunch in the
lush tropical setting of the Botanical Gardens. The lucky winners
of the fishing tournament were awarded with prizes such as
trophies, lei, fishing poles, tackle boxes and backpacks.

Withstand the
Financial
Windstorm
of a
Hurricane
Hurricane season is upon us and runs through the end of
November and Hickam FCU wants you to be prepared. All it takes
is one hurricane to cause extensive damage to home and personal
property. And with the high cost of living in Hawaii, the intense
wind, rain and flood damage can also cause a torrent of financial
hardship and devastation in its aftermath.
Hurricane preparedness not only includes readying a survival
kit but also fortifying your financial situation to withstand any
disaster to come your way.
Here are some things you can do to prepare:
Document Your Possessions
Take digital photos and videos of your home’s interior and
exterior; furnishings; valuable possessions; and vehicles. Include
close-ups and single photos of valuable items and wide shots of
cabinet, closet and storage area contents. This will make it easier
when filing for insurance claims and replacement. Save the
images to CD or other digital storing devices and secure with
important papers.
Secure Important Documents
You don’t have to wait for a storm to begin organizing and
safeguarding important papers such as social security cards; birth,
death, divorce, marriage certificates; insurance policies; estate
documents including wills, trusts, powers of attorney; deeds;
mortgage titles; copies of vehicle registration and other licenses;
old family photos; savings bonds; and receipts for major
purchases and valuables. Also make a list of financial institution,
investment and credit card account numbers and their contact
information. Place them in waterproof envelopes or if you’re techsavvy, scan the documents onto a CD or portable storage drive.
Then, store them in a safe deposit box at a financial institution or
in a secure portable carrying case quick for the grabbing.
Attention
Visa В® Cardholders:
Traveling Outside the United States?
Before traveling abroad especially to foreign countries, please
contact the credit union before using your Hickam FCU Visa
Credit or Hoku CheckCard. Let us know the following
information:
• Where you are traveling
• When you are traveling
This information will alert us to any transactions that occur
outside your typical card use behavior and purchase patterns.
Due to an increase of fraudulent transactions from certain
countries with extremely high suspicious activities, your Visa
Credit and Hoku CheckCard may be blocked automatically
unless we are notified.
We want to ensure that your money is safe and secure. And
equally so, we want to ensure that you have uninterrupted use
and convenience of your Visa cards while traveling. Call us
by phone at 423-1391 or toll-free 1-800-432-4328.

Review Homeowner’s Insurance Coverage
Check your policy to see what is and isn’t covered in the case of
natural disasters. Also, if you live in a flood zoned area and along
shorelines, explore adding flood coverage just in case.
If you’re looking to refinance a 30-year
mortgage and can afford to make higher
monthly payments, then Hickam FCU has a
low-rate 15-year Fixed Mortgage to help pay
off your loan more quickly. Call 440-5380
for details.
Build Emergency Cash Reserves
Save regularly to your Hickam FCU Money Market Account and
build your emergency funds. Also, open a Hickam FCU home
equity line of credit and have it available for repairs and other
emergencies. These accounts are easily accessible and flexible.
*Based on an owner-occupied, single family residential property located in the State of
Hawaii, 15-year fixed loan at 5.70% simple interest (6.006% APR plus 2.00 points), you will
have 180 monthly principal and interest payments of $827.74 per $100,000. APR is based
on maximum Mortgage Loan based on 100% of appraised value or 90% of current year State
real property valuation whichever is higher. Rates, terms and conditions are subject to
