Fabric Bolt Rochester, New York Chapter of the American Sewing Guild Volume 26 Issue 6 November/December 2014 For those of you who are following the tracking of my ASG discounts year to date, January 1 through September 30, I have saved $121.60. From the Joann’s VIP discounts $51.86 and from other sources $69.74. The cost of my membership dues have now been paid for twice from the discounts I have earned being a member. The discounts are a result of careful shopping. When I am planning on a purchase, I see where I can get the best deal and who gives an ASG discount. I do sew just about every day so I go through a lot of product in the process, I do not sew for money so I do need to make every penny count and I throw almost nothing out. October already! I have already completed several Christmas projects and really going full steam ahead. I am eyeing the Gifts Gala projects and thinking about what great ideas they are for sharing with family, friends not to mention neighbors, letter carrier, hair dress etc.. I like to have several things on hand I can quickly grab for those folks who show up with a gift because you know how embarrassing it is when someone gives you something and you have nothing for them. October also means it’s time to sign up for stitch camp. Sometimes I wish we had a stitch camp before the holidays so I could get that concentrated time to sew but instead all the things I want to make and can’t because of my Christmas sewing I save for stitch camp. I bought the fabric for new living room drapes in June, but it looks like that will be a project I will save for stitch camp now or will it be the sheath dresses I want to make after the class I took at the ASG convention in July, guess you will find out at stitch camp. One thing is for sure attending ASG meetings inspires so many ideas, I have to write them down. I really hate that it gets dark so early now and that is probably the thing I dislike about fall, the days are getting shorter. When I was working I never saw daylight, went to work in the dark and came home in the dark. At least being retired I have an opportunity to see daylight. Then of course Rochester sure has more than its fair share of gray days. I find that one of the biggest changes to my eyes is the need for more good lighting. Have to Thank God for Ott lights. I do find working with dark fabrics more of a challenge and tend to leave those projects for brighter days. Before we know it November will be on us and the madness of the holiday season, with shorter days and more packed into them finding time to do something for ourselves just about always gets placed on the back burner. Every year I say I will not wait to the last minute, yet it seems I am always hurrying to finish something. It occurred to me the problem is I keep adding to what I want to do to begin with, maybe I will try not to do that this year. For October 27, 2014, the challenge is to create an item from their oldest fabric in their stash. For November 24, 2014 the challenge is similar – create something with the youngest, as of August 31, 2014, fabric in the stash. Notions can be new. I am currently going through my stash to find that piece I have been aging through household moves. I am sure I have some BC (before child) fabric that is now ready. The Great Garments Group of Rochester was challenged to incorporate some vintage doilies in a garment. I, embarrassingly, had a small item whipped together that day. On the other hand, Chris Ciesla had put 6 vintage doilies and dresser scarves together to make a dramatic, black, top. She dyed the various items black so that the color variations would not detract from the overall effect. She has a beautiful top for the holiday season parties. I hope our next challenge produces such good work. The pictures really do not do this beautiful top justice... Lorrie D’Angelo -6- MACHINE EMBROIDERY: IT’S ALL ABOUT HOOPING Cindy Phillips says: Here is a little helpful hooping tip I came across recently. Maybe it’s been around a while but it was new to me & may be new to others. Place double sided wash-away tape (such as wash away Wonder Tape) on the bottom side of the inside hoop. Position the inside hoop on top of your fabric where you want it and smooth the fabric out nice & flat. Pick up the fabric & inner hoop together & place inside the outer hoop. The tacky tape helps keep the fabric from shifting when hooping and easily washes off your hoop when you are done. Some people use plain double sided tape but the adhesive from that might be more difficult to remove from the hoop. WEBSTER STITCHES Webster NG recently started its 2nd year of sit and sew meetings. Last year we welcomed several new NG attendees as well as new ASG members. In September we gained another new ASG member who is joining our sewing days. The informal day of work on your own project while you visit with sewing friends has been well attended with 15-18 every month. As a follow-up to making toiletry bags for the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association’s Camp Courage summer campers, we are making holiday pillowcases and small bags filled with toiletries for the holiday sleep over at the Webster Fire Department this coming December. Last year 27 burn victim kids age 6 to 19 were part of this event. These kids come from all paths of life and FLRBA and its volunteers have several planned events throughout the year for them. Cut 6- 4 inch squares from contrasting, coordinating or matching fabric for each block. 2. Sew squares right sides together using ¼ inch seam. 3. Leave one seam open and turn right side out. 4. Insert a cube of foam or polyester stuffing. 5. Slip stitch or blind stitch open seam closed. 6. Those attending spend an entire weekend in the company of their friends and their sewing machines. It is a nice time to get to know Guild members outside our Neighborhood Groups, to focus on a particular sewing project, start something new, or finish a UFO. Perhaps you’d like to attend. GATES CHANGES Gates continues to meet the Wednesday of the month. They have changed their meeting time to start at 4pm, this allow more sewing time for the members while still allowing members who work to come after work. On October 15ththey will be doing a charity project and November 19 th they are making fleece socks. December 10th they will have a Christmas Party at Brook Lea Country Club 3rd DONATIONS Frequently our members are contacted by elderly members, or families who are cleaning out a loved one’s belongings. They want the supplies accumulated by a fellow sewist to go to someone who appreciates its value or to charity. How this should be handled is a question we need to think about. Gretchen Dent just received a huge donation of sewing goods. She handled it perfectly. I want to share with you how she did this. 1st she sorted the goods. She kept what she could use for her charity projects. 2nd she gave away to other neighborhood groups for their charity projects. 3rd she offered the remainder for sale and very low prices to others maintaining the funds to use for her cancer project 4th She requested a receipt from the treasurer of an estimated dollar value for the goods for the contributor. If someone wants to donate to ASG, and you really do not want to get involved, please contact a member of the CAB and we will handle the donation. Kathleen Gilbert 474-2971 or email [email protected] Deborah Barnes 671-3659 or email [email protected] A Well-Travelled Designer Marcia McClintock , an experienced traveler and pattern designer, was the featured speaker at the Rochester Metro ASG fall educational event on Saturday, September 2th. She started the program by unpacking her carry on suitcase which held her wardrobe for the week ahead. She introduced her pattern line item by item as she unpacked. All her patterns include pockets; some with zippers, some hidden, hence, the name of her company – Safe-T-Pockets. She shared a variety of travel hints while presenting the class including advice on color coordination of a travel wardrobe-2 neutral colors plus an accent color. Her fashionable and comfortable choices made dressing easy for travel easy. Marcia advised us that two bottoms and five tops equal 30 possible outfits if you plan ahead. Other tips she shared included everything from comfortable show brands to volunteering to gate check a heavy carry on. The next part of her presentation took us on a virtual tour of the garment district in New York City including a stop at Koos van den Acker’s studio. All presentations were laced with sewing and fabric tips and techniques. Handouts included a list of fabric shops in the garment district; road trip anyone? After lunch, Marcia showed us her upcycling ideas and we had the opportunity to sew an apron made out of a man’s dress shirt, a tee shirt scarf and a cosmetic or wristlet bag out of recycled jeans. It was a good day to sew and learn in a new meeting place- St. Lawrence’s Deacon Hall. ASG members from Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse were inspired by the event.
