Quilting Terminology Contributed by Dawn Brimer Sew . . . what on earth is an “RR” or an “RxR”? If you’re looking for some fun and challenging ways to play with other quilters, then here are a couple of really fun projects to do with a group of quilting friends. RR is short for Round Robin, a quilting project where a group of quilters add rounds of blocks or borders to a center block. RxR is short for Row by Row, a project where quilters each complete a single row of a quilt top. For either project:  Start by gathering a group of 6 to 8 quilting friends.  Assign each person a number (1 to 6 or 1 to 8)  Decide on the general project rules, for example: o How long does each person have to complete his or her portion of the project? o May quilters add fabric from their own stashes to the project? o Specific guidelines for the project (block or row size, border limitations, etc.) This may be whatever the group decides. o All members of the group agree to abide by the rules!  Each person in the group decides on his or her theme and fabrics, makes the first section (block or row) of the quilt, and provides a journal entry with thoughts about the quilt theme (my quilt theme is “Ava’s Flower Garden”), why the theme was chosen, information about her or himself, etc.  The first part of the quilt is placed into a box along with: o Any additional fabrics o The journal so each person may leave a message about their inspiration and thoughts o A signature block/quilt label which will be signed by each person working on the quilt top. People may choose to leave a short message on the label (for example, “the butterflies and bees will LOVE Ava’s Flower Garden) o Little gifties as a thank you to the other quilters! Running Stitches In Sew Many Ways . . . Quilting Terminology, con’t     The box is then passed on to the person having the next number. The new person will add a block, border, or row to the quilt top (as outlined in the rules), write a message in the journal and sign the quilt label. (Note: Often in an RxR, quilters decide that the rows are not joined together until the quilt top is returned to its original home.) The box is then passed on to each person in order, finally returning to the original quilter who will be surprised and amazed by the wonderful quilt top and journal entries made by his or her quilting friends. Quilters abide by the rules as set by the group, and are usually free to choose whatever block they wish to add to the RR or RxR, as long as it stays within the theme of the quilt. This creates an element of surprise and wonder for the original quilt owner, as she will not see the quilt top again until it returns home. This is a GREAT way for quilters to begin to “think outside the box” (or block), create a block of their own, and in turn, become more confident in their skills and creativity. Sew Now . . . Embellish Me! Contributed by Elaine Rowe back through the button and tie off. The buttons again add dimension and help secure the thread. Buttons can be eyes for birds and bees, center for flowers and even a doorknob on an appliquéd house. Covered buttons can be used with a coordinating fabric to add a custom look to your quilt. There are lots of embellishments you can find around your sewing room. Bits of lace, rick-rack and ribbon can be used as edging or stems for flowers. Dig out that button shaped like a puppy or the sun, stars or flowers, when you need a little bit of detail. Sequins, beads and rhinestone buttons can be added to Christmas stockings for a touch of shine. Just a word to the wise, be very careful about adding embellishments to baby quilts. Remember little fingers can pry buttons and yo-yo’s loose and then they become a choking hazard. Also, be careful of the lure of the embellishments. If you’re not careful, you could end up like me – hooked on the fun of adding that little bit of extra to your quilt!! Our Instructors We have a great staff of skilled instructors here at BRight-On who would love to have you join a class! Drop by our website to meet them all. www.b-right-onsewing.com You’ve finished that really nice quilt but it needs something – just a little something extra. What do you do? There are lots of choices to add a something extra and personalize your project. Sew Now . . . Spools (Skill Levels): Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you that yoyo’s are one of my favorite embellishments. A yo-yo is a gathered fabric circle, that can be added to the center of a block or placed along the border. They add dimension and color to any quilt and a bit of whimsy. Yo-yo’s can be used alone or combined with appliqué to make wonderful flower centers. Yo-yo’s used to be made by cutting a cardboard template and stitching around it. Today, yo-yo makers simplify the project and make it much simpler and faster. To help you decide which classes are right for you, we’ve given them a “spool” rating: If you are looking for some fun color, dig out that button box. Buttons, new and old, large and small, colored and plain can be used in a variety of ways. Buttons can be used as a quilting aid with embroidery floss or yarn. When you tie your quilt, slip the yarn or embroidery floss through a button and then through the quilt layers and Please see our website for an expanded description of class skill levels. www.b-right-onsewing.com One spool: Appropriate for any skill level. Two spools: Beginner and beyond. Focus is on acquiring/refining basic skills in the area being taught. Must be comfortable with use of sewing machine for classes requiring them. Three spools: Intermediate. Focus is on expanding skills. A general understanding of the area being taught (quilting, appliqué, machine embroidery, etc.) will increase your enjoyment. Four spools: Advanced. These classes explore more complex techniques in their area of focus (quilting, appliqué, machine embroidery, etc.) and build on skills already acquired.
