Weekly e-News October 10, 2014 Dear Members and Friends: Paid Sick Leave: New Law in California A recently passed law will make California the second state to mandate paid sick leave for many employees. Under the вЂњHealthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014вЂќ, which goes into effect July 1, 2015, California employers will be required to provide at least three days of paid sick leave each year. This benefit will accrue at a rate of one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked. Paid sick leave laws are a growing trend. In addition to statewide paid sick leave requirements in the states of California and Connecticut, many municipalities, including New York City, Seattle, Jersey City, Newark, San Francisco, San Diego, and Portland, Oregon, have implemented their own paid sick leave requirements. We anticipate several additional municipalities and states to be added to this list in the next few years. There is a lot more that changes this year! We, as members of GSBE and in conjunction with the AGC, sponsored this legislation because many jurisdictions were withholding plans from our exchange and some were even trying to charge for digital copies sent by email. Many jurisdictions also use вЂњblueprint servicesвЂќ as the sole method of distribution вЂ“ which forces contractors to buy printed sets of digital plans. This is good legislation for our members and we are beginning our campaign to make the various state and local agencies aware of the new law, and also asking them to provide us with plans. Over the next several weeks Andrea will contact many local jurisdictions and make a special effort to reach those small water districts and school districts which often go unnoticed.
