15th ANNUAL
SENIOR SAFETY CAMP
WITH WCCO’S MIKE LYNCH
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10—9:30-2:30
Join us for a day packed with education and fun!
This year’s keynote speaker is WCCO Radio’s
Meteorologist Mike Lynch. Mike has been working with WCCO Radio for almost 35 years and,
during that time, he has covered all kinds of
weather, from deadly tornados to record cold
snaps. Having lived in Minnesota most of his life,
it is no wonder he is so passionate about its
weather!
This event also includes other presenters and an expo. We’ll have live
entertainment by country musician Larry Rose and a continental breakfast (upon your arrival) sponsored by Mary T., Inc. We’ll enjoy turkey
sub sandwiches for lunch. Thanks to community donations, this event
costs only $6.00 and includes lunch, refreshments, speakers and door
prizes. Payment must be made by Wednesday, September 3. Registration begins immediately! Participants are required to attend the entire
event. Safety Camp is hosted by the Coon Rapids Fire and Police Departments and Senior Services.
SCHOOL HOUSE MEMORIES
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 AT 10:30 A.M.

stories and beautiful photographs that will make you
smile and laugh, but most of all remember a more gentle and simple era of education. The cost of $3 includes donuts and coffee. The payment deadline is

FALL MYSTERY TRIP
TUESDAY, SEPT. 23
If you like a little history
with your mystery,
This trip will be for you.
A delicious lunch,
a few surprises,
A day to learn
something new.
THURSDAY, OCT. 9
Join the celebration of A Prairie Home Companion’s 40th anniversary through a quirky and satiric journey into the memories of
its creator. The “On Air” lights flash and the show begins. The
host, played by Pearce Bunting (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire),
presides over a parade of singing groups, the private eye Guy
Noir, the cowboys Dusty and Lefty, and the people of Lake
Wobegon. The lines between imagination and reality are blurred
as a young boy reminisces about his radio dreams, a producer
chastises the host, and the stage manager somehow keeps the
show rolling along. (Written by Garrison Keillor). Lunch will
follow at Keys Restaurant in St. Paul. Lunch includes a cup of
soup and/or 1/2 sandwich/garden salad, cookie and beverage.
(There are nine choices of soup and four choices of sandwiches).

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1
Our first stop will be at downtown Stillwater’s St. Croix Boat

(Other beverages can be purchased on your own).
After the boat trip, we’ll head to St. Croix Wineries and Aamodt’s Apple Farm. These two attractions are
right next to each other, so you can choose one or both! St. Croix Wineries is one of Minnesota’s largest
and most well known wineries. Take a stroll through their picturesque vineyards or enjoy the rustic tasting
room in a restored century-old barn. Right next door is Aamodt’s Apple Farm. It has been family owned
since 1948. Visit their historic 1880’s apple barn and shop for a variety of specialty foods, locally produced
honey, real maple syrup, unique gifts and, of course, Minnesota apples! You’ll find their delectable Apple
Bakery inside the barn, too! We’re taking two buses, so join in the fun!

One sub-species feeds in packs as do their land
counterparts. The other subspecies feeds only on
marine mammals, tossing seals into the air to
“tenderize” them killer-whale style. Either form of
these relatives of dolphins, are ruled by the oldest
female. These are among the
many fascinating pieces gleaned
from being a student in the class
of the top orca researcher in the
world, numerous personal sightings, as the education leader for the Kodiak
Whalefest and as the Education Coordinator for the
Alaska Refuge, questioning the impact of these
“wolves of the sea” on a 90% drop in some marine
mammal species. Melonie Shipman, a naturalist
from Alaska and the North Woods will share with
you the non-Sea World realities of killer whales Refreshments will be served afterwards. The cost is $3

CHORES & MORE: Fall is approaching fast. Give a call after September 1, 2014, for fall raking and
snow removal. One stop shopping for minor home repairs, housekeeping, and seasonal chores for people

SUPER SENIOR CLUB
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
CORRECTION: I wrote in our July/August letter that Bill Reichenborn and Marge Rosendahl attended the Senior
Recognition Night at Coon Rapids High School and handed out 2 scholarships in the amount of $1,500.00 each; the
scholarships were $1,000.00 each. I apologize for the error.
More new Super Senior Members joining in 2014 are Dede De Grote, Pat Lake, Pat Pasiewicz, and Paulette Pikus.
WELCOME!
At the July meeting, Bill Reichenborn reported that the gift shop sold $735.00 more than what was forecasted to sell.
Congratulations to Jordy Powell and Mary Tucker, managers, and to the hard-working volunteers, Shirley Garner,
Karen Graham, Louise Pleimling, and substitutes, Pat Lake, Dorothy O’Connor, Rachel Raveling, and Diane
Strandberg. Also at the July meeting, Bernice Olson said a $250.00 grant would be given that day to Stepping Stones
Homeless Shelter, as they are now able to remodel the building’s basement for kitchen space, storage space, etc.
Members that went to present the grant and take a photo on behalf of the club were: Karen Graham, Lavonne Hayes,
Bernice Olson, Mary Tucker and Joyce Ulmer.
I’m still full. Our annual picnic was held August 1st and was a great success with chicken, potato salad, beans, and ice
cream to eat! Yummy. We had fun playing Bingo afterwards. Thank you Bob Powell for being our Bingo Caller.
What a great job Helen Swaim has done organizing this event, as she does every year. Thank you.
The September Super Senior Club Meeting will be held on September 5th at 10:00 a.m. with great entertainment after,
starring guitarist and variety singer, Bill Cagley. Revised membership directories will be passed out. For those unable to attend the meeting, they will be available for pick up Monday – Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon beginning September 8th at the Gift Shop.
The date for this year’s bazaar is THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH with set up on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH. Our first bazaar meeting will also take place September 5th at 9:00 a.m. in the room behind the gift shop
for chair people, helpers, and anyone who wants to have input regarding the bazaar. Regarding donations, we depend
on your generosity to make this a success. We welcome all the books, jewelry, Christmas items, new craft items, flea
market items, and new raffle items that you can donate. All items may be brought to the senior center beginning October 1st. There will be a designated area set aside for Christmas and flea market items. Craft items should be taken
to the gift shop and marked as bazaar items. Raffle items should also be taken to the gift shop and marked for the
bazaar. Questions about the raffle should be directed to Karen Graham at 763-767-0266. Last year we were short on
baked goods and sold out early, so we definitely need everyone’s help with this. Baked goods need to be dropped off
the morning of the bazaar between 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. A sign-up sheet for bazaar help will be posted Monday, October
13th at the gift shop. We really need some strong folks to deliver the donated items to the designated selling areas the
morning of set up.
October’s meeting will be held October 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. with the Windjammers tentatively scheduled to entertain
afterwards. At 9:00 a.m. there will be a bazaar meeting in the room behind the gift shop.
The Super Senior Club operates the gift shop throughout the year and holds a bazaar in November to raise funds that
we use to give back to the community through grants and scholarships. We need many people to do this, and would
appreciate your help. To join you can meet with our Membership Chairperson at a meeting or simply stop by the gift
shop from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, Monday through Wednesday and a volunteer sales associate can assist you. Our
dues are only $7.00. Our meetings are held the first Friday of the month at 10:00 a.m., just pop into a meeting, we
would be so glad to have you.
