New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS): With the prices of
both global and silver declining sharply in the
global markets, India has slashed their import
tariff value to ascertain their import duty, an official statement said Saturday.
The tariff value for gold has been cut to $391
per 10 grams from $401, while that for silver has
been reduced to $551 per kg from $575 per kg.
These tariff values for a host of commodities are
ascertained on a fortnightly basis.
The slash in tariff value on imported gold
has been notified by the Central Board of Excise
and Customs.
The import tariff value is the base price at
which customs duty is levied. It helps to prevent
under-invoicing. Gold price in the Delhi bullion
markets was ruling at around Rs.26,550 per 10
grams and silver at Rs.36,250 per kg Saturday.

Pradesh government was
not supplying 54 per cent
of power which is due to
Telangana and is trying to
block power generation at
Srisailam reservoir.
“The previous rulers did
not set up power generating stations in Telangana
and hence we are facing a
crisis now.
Our power woes will
continue for the next two
to three years.
I told people about this
even during the election
campaign,” the TRS chief
said.
On the measures his
government has taken to
overcome the power crisis in Telangana, Rao said
Telangana is currently
purchasing 1000 MW of
power from Chhattisgarh
while new power generating stations are also being
set up to resolve the crisis.

of illegal wildlife products seized from poachers, including those derived from tigers, elephants, leopards, lions and snakes, will be

only 20 kg per family. “Instead, we
will give six kg rice per each person, irrespective of total number of
persons in a family, in accordance
with a decision taken by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao”.

security cards in the rural and urban areas. The government would
inquire and give the same cards in

14 killed in Himachal as
bus rolls down gorge
Shimla, Nov 1 (IANS):
Fourteen people, including three women and two
children, were killed when a
privately-owned overcrowded mini bus rolled down a
700-metre gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district
Saturday, police said.

Hyderabad, Nov.1 (NSS): The TRS Government was formulating a
people-centric budget aimed at providing the needed benefits and welfare measures during the coming five in the Telangana State.
The Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj, K. Taraka Ramarao disclosed this
while interacting with the media briefly at the State Assembly on Saturday.
He said that the budget was being prepared by the government keeping view
the interests of the people and development of the state which would be
amply reflected during the next five years. Many new welfare schemes have
been planned and incorporated in the budget, he disclosed.
Pointing out that the people of the state have pinned their hopes on the
TRS government for leading a better life, KTR said that the government accordingly was formulating its budget keeping this in view and also the priorities that have to be looked into in the next five years. He regretted that the
opposition parties were indulging in baseless allegations against the government and trying to sow seeds of distrust among the people.
Lashing out at Telugu Desam and Congress leaders for desperately trying
to malign the state government, KTR reminded that if the opposition is hell
bent in hurling stones at them , they too were capable of replying with the
same coin. The TRS and the government was prepared to reply appropriately to any questions and issues being raised by the opposition parties, he
observed and felt that it would be better for the TDP and Congress to talk less
as they have lost the moral right to take up the cause of the farmers.

present power problem to
the deliberate attempts of
the Andhra Pradesh Government which was per-
sistently violating AP Bifurcation Act. Telangana
is facing power crisis as
the previous governments
failed to set up power
projects in the region.
Alleged that his AP
counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu was hatching conspiracies against
the Telangana State with
regard to power and irrigation waters, KCR said
despite tireless efforts to
tide over the crisis, Chandrababu Naidu was trying his best to stop power
production at Srisailam
project. He said his government was purchasing
power as well as producing the same at Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam
projects so that it could
supply it to the farmers
to some extent. As per AP
Bifurcation Act, Telangana State should get 54
per cent of power from
the projects, but that is
not being implemented
by the AP Government,
he deplored. He also said
demand for power in
Telangana increased now
which was not so before

not continue after three

the government and prefer alternative crops than
the paddy, he pleaded.

rescue of the cotton growers.
As a matter of fact he said that
there were over 100 representations pending before the
central government regarding
the power crisis and problems
of the farmers. Even the Telangana Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister have taken up
the issue with the central leadership, Harish Rao had stated.
As if counter the claims being made by the TRS ministers,
Dayakar Rao pointed out that
when a delegation of TTDP
legislators and leaders had
called on the Union Ministers
like Nirmala Seetharaman and
others and represented about
the plight of the farmers, especially of the cotton growers
and about the power shortage,
they had all assured to come
to the assistance of the State
Government in a big way to
come out of the problems.

delegation by the central leaders to send an official team
to study the hardships being
faced by the farmers including
the cotton growers and provide
the needed assistance. Apart
from ensuring minimum support price for the farm produce,

Naidu asks farmers to
slash input expenditure &
achieve more production
Hyderabad, Nov.1 (NSS): AP Chief
Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu today
exhorted the farmers to cut down input expenditure and increase agriculture production.
Participating “Janmabhoomi-Maa
Vooru” program at Kalvapudi in West
Godavari district, Naidu said his government would ensure plenty of water in the district by completing Polavaram project in three to four years.
Drinking water would be provided
through NTR Sujala Sravanti scheme,
he added. Chandrababu said his government would provide education to
poor children in Adarsh schools. “Children are capable to conquer the world
if they were given standard and good
education”, he felt.
The AP Chief Minister said development works would be taken up in
gram panchyats with a budget of Rs
1,300 crore. He called upon the people
to keep every village clean and every
house should have a toilet. Each gram
panchayat would be granted Rs 10 lakh
to take up sanitation works, he said.
Badly-hit Araku
valley to be
developed: Balayya
Hyderabad, Nov.1 (NSS): Tollywood
hero and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri
Balakrishna on Saturday said the Araku valley would be developed to attract
foreign tourists.
Balakrishna, who is in Araku in Visakhapatnam district in connection
with a cinema shoot, garlanded the
statue of his father and former chief
minister late NTR at a local park. Stating that Araku valley suffered heavy
damage during the recent Hudhud
cyclone, he said it would take years to
develop the valley. The valley would
be developed to attract even tourists.
Balakrishna said the TDP government
would extend adequate assistance to
tribals, who lost their coffee crops in
the cyclone. Reminding that the valley
was developed during NTR regime for
shooting of small films, he said now efforts would be made to provide infrastructure for shooting of big films in
the valley.

the TRS government with failure to
prevent suicides of farmers, TDP official spokesperson Nannuri Narsireddy
today warned the KCR government
not to level baseless allegations against
the neighboring State’s chief minister
with an intention to cover up its inefficiency.
Quoting newspaper reports, Narsireddy said though over 350 farmers committed suicides in Telangana
State so far, the KCR government was
distorting facts and holding the Opposition parties responsible for the
farmers’ suicides. Excoriating the
TRS government, Nannuri said some
12,000 people had sacrificed their lives
for separate Telangana State. But the
TRS, after coming to power, was falsely
claiming only 462 farmers had committed suicides thinking that it can pay
compensation to fewer number of bereaved families.
Criticising Telangana Agriculture
Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, the
TDP leader said the former becoming
Agriculture Minister in the TRS government has become a curse for the
distressed farmers.
Booma surrenders

including a YSRCP activist, were injured in the melee. There was tension
in Nandyal after a case of attempt to

“foolhardiness” of the TDP
government in “changing
the historic date” without
any valid reason.
“Due respect should be
given to the historic facts...
Andhra Pradesh along

formed on November
1 on linguistic basis. I
see no reason as to why
(Chief Minister) Chandrababu Naidu should shift
the date to June 2,” YSRC

Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are observing
November 1 as the state
formation day even as new
states of Chhattisgarh,
Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, respectively, were

a social worker, litterateur and led library movement.
His “Prajala Manishi” book reflects the feelings and
sorrows of the common man.
The Chief Minister recalled that Alwar Swamy carried books on his head in villages, besides donating
his own books to the City Central Library for posterity. Alleging that previous governments ignored his
services, KCR said his government would publish
through Telugu Akademi on the works and life history of Alwar Swamy and give due recognition to
him. Noted for setting up associations for traders,
rickshaw-pullers and civil liberties, Swamy suffered
a jail term for fighting suppression, the CM recalled.

Hyderabad, Nov 1 (PTI): A class VI student was
allegedly beaten up by a woman teacher as he had
worn a dress related to a religious ritual and not the
school uniform, sparking protest in Andhra Pradesh’s
Kurnool district.
Police said that they have registered a case under
various IPC sections, including for hurting religious
feeelings but no arrest has been made so far.
The student at a private school, who was observing
Ayyappa Deeksha, went to the school on October 29
wearing a �mala’ (garland) and attired in black dress,
a traditional robe wore during Ayyappa deeksha.
However, it was objected to by the teacher who
also allegedly passed some objectionable comments,
Kurnool II town police station sub-inspector Babu
Prasad said.
According to the complaint filed by boy’s parents,
the teacher not only beat up the boy but also abused
him and allegedly tried to snatch his mala, the SI
said, adding that she further made the student clean
the school premises.
When the boy narrated the incident to his parents,
they went to school to verify the matter but they were
too allegedly abused by the teacher.
Angered over the incident, scores of people, including some members of right-wing organisations,
staged a protest at the school and also damaged furniture at its office.
Following the complaint, police registered a case
under IPC sections 295 A (deliberate and malicious
acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) and 298
(uttering, words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound
the religious feelings of any person) in this regard.
“No one has been arrested so far and investigation
is on,” Prasad added.
Ali planning to file cheating
case against KCR
Hyderabad, Nov.1 (NSS): CLP deputy leader in the
Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir today said he would explore legal options to register a case of cheating against
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and other TRS leaders for making false promises in their party manifesto.
Addressing the media at the CLP office here on Saturday,
Shabbir Ali said KCR has deliberately cheated the people
of Telangana, especially farmers, by making non-practical promises on supplying power. Instead of eight hours,
the TRS should have promised power supply for three
hours as it was aware that the new State would face shortage of energy due to bifurcation of the State. Therefore,
the TRS is liable to be prosecuted for making false promises and drove several farmers to suicide.

Ali said the Congress party,

of Muslims in 2002.

Four employees of the Tamil
Nadu State Transport Corporation workshop at nearby
Srivaikuntam were suspended
today for allegedly stealing articles worth Rs 2.5 lakh.
TNSTC Officials said those
suspended included the Manager of the workshop, an Assistant Engineer, a Technician
and store keeper on a complaint that the articles were
missing from the workshop.
Investigations revealed the
involvement of the four in
the crime they said, adding,
further action would be taken

Leopard found
near Kodaikanal

Pugmarks of a leopard have
been found near Shola falls
area near the popular tourist
hill station of Kodaikanal after
two dogs went missing from a
private bungalow a few days
ago, forest officials said today.
A team of officials led by
Forest ranger Nagiah collected the pugmarks yesterday.
The marks are that of a
leopard which may be roaming in the area, he said. He
had also received complaints
about missing dogs.
Steps would be taken to
fence the border areas of the
forest to prevent entry of wild
animals into residential areas,
he said.
The security guard of the
bungalow was the first to notice the pugmarks and inform
the councillor after he found
the dogs missing from there.

made it to the Limca Book of
Records (LBR) as the longest
cake in the country.
The one and half foot cake,

Bake Expo 2014 which began

of the Bakers Association,

Sexual assault of minor girls in schools:
CM warns managements
Bengaluru, Nov 1 (PTI):
Amid public outrage over a
spate of sexual assaults on
minor girls, Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah today warned
managements that permission granted to their schools
would be revoked and criminal cases booked against them
if they violate guidelines for
safety of children.
“Sexual assaults on minor
girls have made the civil society hang its head in shame.
Even beasts don’t behave like
this. It is inhuman and condemnable,” he said, as public anger grew over the latest
sexual assault of a six-year old
girl in the fourth such incident
in as many months in schools
here.
As the recurring incidents
also brought his government
in the line of fire, Siddaramaiah said, “Once the children enter the school, it is the
responsibility of the institution to provide all safety measures to a boy or a girl.”

he said police had slapped
criminal charges against the
culprits in minor girls sexual
assault cases in the city.

Government was considering setting up fast-track
courts to ensure speedy trials relating to sexual assault
on minor children, Siddaramaiah said. “Heads of school

Families of 5 fishermen on
fast to press for release
Rameswaram (TN) Nov 1 (PTI): Families of
five fishermen sentenced to death by a court
in Sri Lanka for alleged drug trafficking today
observed a one-day fast to press government
to take immediate steps to bring them back
home. The families wore black badges at the
venue in this coastal town. Local people, as
also about 3,000 activists of various political
parties joined them at the spot, shouted slogans against the court verdict and urged government to do everything possible to get the
fishermen back.
Leaders of political parties, including Suba
Thangavelan of DMK, Raman Unni (Congress), Arjunan (AIADMK) and Annadurai of
CPI(M) were present at the venue.
The five fishermen, all hailing from Tamil
Nadu, were apprehended in 2011 by the Sri
Lankan Navy on charges of smuggling drugs
in the seas off northern Jaffna’s Delft islet.
On October 30, they were given the death

Chennai, Nov 1 (PTI): For the second time
in as many months, the Tamil Nadu government has hiked the prices of liquor sold
through state run TASMAC outlets.
The hike, which came into force from today, varies from Rs eight to Rs 80, Tamil Nadu
State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC)

While in the ordinary category, a consumer
would have to pay Rs eight for 180 ml, Rs 16
for 375 ml and Rs 32 for 750 ml, it was Rs 10,
Rs 20 and Rs 40 in the medium category, they
said, adding the prices were Rs 20, Rs 40 and
Rs 80 in the deluxe premium category.
The beginning of a month, weekends and
festivals are days which witness high income
sales through these outlets, TASMAC officials
said. TASMAC had increased the price last
month. The reason behind the hike is reportedly suppliers’ request to the government following an increase in raw material prices.

UJJAIN Nov 1 (PTI): Prohibitory orders against
movement were imposed in some parts of Ujjain city
on Friday night after a report of attack on a religious
place was followed by stone-pelting at the police in
Begumbagh area.
“Ujjain collector Kavindra Kiyawat, a police official
and few other policemen sustained minor injuries in
the stone-pelting,” said inspector general Madhu Kumar on Saturday.
Police had received a complaint that unidentified
people had hurled a petrol bomb at a religious place
of a minority community in Begumbagh.
As the police team reached there and started inquiry, a mob which had gathered on the spot started
throwing stones. Stones were also thrown from roofs
of the houses in the area. Police fired several rounds of
teargas shells and resorted to baton-charging to bring
the situation under control, Kumar said.
After a late night search operation, police arrested
52 persons and orders prohibiting assembly of people
and movement in the areas under the jurisdiction of
Kotwali, Mahakal, Kharakuan and Jiwajiganj police
station were imposed. Kumar said the situation was
today tense but under control, and a large number of
policemen had been deployed in the troubled areas.

Four children abused in
Goa everyday, says NGO
Goa Nov 1 (PTI): Nearly four children are abused everyday in Goa and most of such offences remain unreported, as per an NGO working against child abuse.
“On an average four children are abused in Goa daily.
As per government statistics, the number of cases are on
the rise,” said Ashwini Verenkar, project director of ElShaddai Charitable trust which runs Panaji based NGO
called SCAN.
The NGO, which has been active in rescuing children
in distress, has found that several cases of abuse go unreported and children are abused mostly by the people
known to them.
Many of these cases are of mental and physical abuse
and emotional neglect, she said.
Based on the data collected from various sources, the
NGO has found that the cases of children being abused
by elderly persons known to them and incest are on the
rise.“Tourism-related paedophilia is also increasing,”
Verenkar said.The NGO has assisted 515 children suffering from abuse in the last half-a-decade and is also working to reform juvenile delinquents, she said.

intervention in setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to
probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots
and ensure justice to the victims.
In a letter to Modi, Kejriwal
welcomed Centre’s decision to
give Rs five lakh each to next of
kin of 3,325 victims of the riots
but at the same time asked him
to implement the erstwhile AAP
government’s decision to appoint an SIT to probe the cases.
The former Delhi chief minister said the trauma of losing
near and dear ones cannot be
compensated by money and the
guilty should be punished. “If
four of my family members were
killed, then Rs five lakh cannot
compensate me. Why they are
not ensuring justice? We decided
to form SIT. Why the decision
has not been implemented,”
Kejriwal told. He accused both
Congress and BJP of not ensuring justice to victims of Sikh riots.
“The victims are still hoping
for justice even 30 years after the
riots. The Congress governments
did nothing. BJP government
had come but it also did nothing.
AAP was the only party which ordered setting up of a SIT within
one month of coming to power,”
Kejriwal said. The AAP government had on February 6 recommended to the Lt Governor
setting up of an SIT with a time
frame of one year to submit its
report. The Delhi Cabinet while
approving the modalities had
stated that all those cases which
were closed or shown untraced,
would be reopened, reinvestigated and if the need arises fresh

into the corners of the cellar, but he could
discover no other furniture except the
chair on which the Hereditary Prince
of Posen sat and a small deal table on
which were a plate and a cup. �Eugen,’
cried Prince Aribert once more, but this
time his forlorn nephew made no response
whatever, and then Aribert added in a low
voice to Racksole: �Perhaps he cannot see us
clearly.’ �But he must surely recognize your
voice,’ said Racksole, in a hard, gloomy tone.
There was a pause, and the two men above
ground looked at each other hesitatingly.
Each knew that they must enter that cellar
and get Prince Eugen out of it, and each was
somehow afraid to take the next step. �Thank
God he is not dead!’ said Aribert. �He may be
worse than dead!’ Racksole replied.
�Come,’ Aribert almost shouted, with a
sudden access of energy—a wild impulse
for action. And, snatching the lantern from
Racksole, he rushed into the dark room
where they had heard the conversation of
Miss Spencer and the lady in the red hat.
For a moment Racksole did not stir from
the threshold of the window. �Come,’ Prince
Aribert repeated, and there was an imperious command in his utterance. �What are
you afraid of?’ �I don’t know,’ said Racksole,
feeling stupid and queer; �I don’t know.’
Then he marched heavily after Prince Aribert into the room. On the mantelpiece
were a couple of candles which had been
blown out, and in a mechanical, unthinking way, Racksole lighted them, and the
two men glanced round the room. It presented no peculiar features: it was just an
ordinary room, rather small, rather mean,
rather shabby, with an ugly wallpaper and
ugly pictures in ugly frames. Thrown over
a chair was a man’s evening-dress jacket.
The door was closed. Prince Aribert turned
the knob, but he could not open it. �It’s
locked,’ he said. �Evidently they know we’re
here.’ �Nonsense,’ said Racksole brusquely;
�how can they know?’ And, taking hold of
the knob, he violently shook the door, and
it opened. �I told you it wasn’t locked,’ he
added, and this small success of opening
the door seemed to steady the man. It was a
curious psychological effect, this terrorizing
(for it amounted to that) of two courageous
full-grown men by the mere apparition of a
helpless creature in a cellar. Gradually they
both recovered from it. The next moment
they were out in the passage which led to
the front door of the house. The front door
stood open. They looked into the street, up
and down, but there was not a soul in sight.
The street, lighted by three gas-lamps only,
seemed strangely sinister and mysterious.
�She has gone, that’s clear,’ said Racksole, meaning the woman with the red hat.
�And Miss Spencer after her, do you think?’
questioned Aribert. �No. She would stay. She
would never dare to leave. Let us find the
cellar steps.’ The cellar steps were happily
not difficult to discover, for in moving a pace
backwards Prince Aribert had a narrow escape of precipitating himself to the bottom
of them. The lantern showed that they were
built on a curve. Silently Racksole resumed
possession of the lantern and went first, the
Prince close behind him. At the foot was a
short passage, and in this passage crouched
the figure of a woman. Her eyes threw back
the rays of the lantern, shining like a cat’s
at midnight. Then, as the men went nearer, they saw that it was Miss Spencer who
barred their way. She seemed half to kneel
on the stone floor, and in one hand she held
what at first appeared to be a dagger, but
which proved to be nothing more romantic
than a rather long bread-knife. �I heard you,
I heard you,’ she exclaimed. �Get back; you
mustn’t come here.’ There was a desperate
and dangerous look on her face, and her
form shook with scarcely controlled passionate energy. �Now see here, Miss Spencer,’ Racksole said calmly, �I guess we’ve had
enough of this fandango. You’d better get up
and clear out, or we’ll just have to drag you
off.’ He went calmly up to her, the lantern in
his hand. Without another word she struck
the knife into his arm, and the lantern fell
extinguished. Racksole gave a cry, rather of
angry surprise than of pain, and retreated
a few steps. In the darkness they could still
perceive the glint of her eyes. �I told you you
mustn’t come here,’ the woman said. �Now
get back.’ Racksole positively laughed. It was
a queer laugh, but he laughed, and he could
not help it. The idea of this woman, this bureau clerk, stopping his progress and that
of Prince Aribert by means of a bread-knife
aroused his sense of humour. He struck a
match, relighted the candle, and faced Miss
Spencer once more. �I’ll do it again,’ she
said, with a note of hard resolve. �Oh, no, you
won’t, my girl,’ said Racksole; and he pulled
out his revolver, cocked it, raised his hand.
�Put down that plaything of yours,’ he said
firmly. �No,’ she answered. �I shall shoot.’
She pressed her lips together. �I shall
shoot,’ he repeated. �One—two—three.’
Bang, bang! He had fired twice, purposely
missing her. Miss Spencer never blenched.
Racksole was tremendously surprised—and
he would have been a thousandfold more
surprised could he have contrasted her behaviour now with her abject terror on the
previous evening when Nella had threatened her. �You’ve got a bit of pluck,’ he said,
�but it won’t help you. Why won’t you let
us pass?’ As a matter of fact, pluck was just
what she had not, really; she had merely
subordinated one terror to another. She was
desperately afraid of Racksole’s revolver,
but she was much more afraid of something
else. �Why won’t you let us pass?’ �I daren’t,’
she said, with a plaintive tremor; �Tom put
me in charge.’That was all. The men could
see tears running down her poor wrinkled
face. Theodore Racksole began to take off
his light overcoat. �I see I must take my coat
off to you,’ he said, and he almost smiled.
Then, with a quick movement, he threw
the coat over Miss Spencer’s head and flew
at her, seizing both her arms, while Prince
Aribert assisted. Her struggles ceased—she
was beaten. �That’s all right,’ said Racksole:
�I could never have used that revolver—to
mean business with it, of course.’ They
carried her, unresisting, upstairs and on to
the upper floor, where they locked her in a
bedroom. She lay in the bed as if exhausted.
�Now for my poor Eugen,’ said Prince Aribert. �Don’t you think we’d better search the
house first?’ Racksole suggested; �it will be
safer to know just how we stand. We can’t
afford any ambushes or things of that kind,
you know.’ The Prince agreed, and they
searched the house from top to bottom, but
found no one. Then, having locked the front
door and the french window of the sittingroom, they proceeded again to the cellar.
Here a new obstacle confronted them. The
cellar door was, of course, locked; there was
no sign of a key, and it appeared to be a heavy
door. They were compelled to return to the
bedroom where Miss Spencer was incarcerated, in order to demand the key of the cellar
from her. She still lay without movement on
the bed. �Tom’s got it,’ she replied, faintly,
to their question: �Tom’s got it, I swear to
you. He took it for safety.’ �Then how do you
feed your prisoner?’ Racksole asked sharply.
�Through the grating,’ she answered.
Both men shuddered. They felt she was
speaking the truth. For the third time they
went to the cellar door. In vain Racksole
thrust himself against it; he could do no
more than shake it. �Let’s try both together,’ said Prince Aribert. �Now!’ There was a
crack. �Again,’ said Prince Aribert. There was
another crack, and then the upper hinge
gave way. The rest was easy. Over the wreck
of the door they entered Prince Eugen’s
prison.The captive still sat on his chair. The
terrific noise and bustle of breaking down
the door seemed not to have aroused him
from his lethargy, but when Prince Aribert
spoke to him in German he looked at his
uncle. �Will you not come with us, Eugen?’
said Prince Aribert; �you needn’t stay here
any longer, you know.’ �Leave me alone,’
was the strange reply; �leave me alone. What
do you want?’ �We are here to get you out
of this scrape,’ said Aribert gently. Racksole
stood aside. �Who is that fellow?’ said Eugen sharply. �That is my friend Mr Racksole,
an Englishman—or rather, I should say, an
American—to whom we owe a great deal.
Come and have supper, Eugen.’
�I won’t,’ answered Eugen doggedly. �I’m
waiting here for her. You didn’t think anyone had kept me here, did you, against my
will? I tell you I’m waiting for her. She said
she’d come.’ �Who is she?’ Aribert asked, humouring him. �She! Why, you know! I forgot,
of course, you don’t know. You mustn’t ask.
Don’t pry, Uncle Aribert. She was wearing a red hat.’ �I’ll take you to her, my dear
Eugen.’ Prince Aribert put his hands on the
other’s shoulder, but Eugen shook him off
violently, stood up, and then sat down again.
Aribert looked at Racksole, and they both
looked at Prince Eugen. The latter’s face was
flushed, and Racksole observed that the left
pupil was more dilated than the right. The
man started, muttered odd, fragmentary
scraps of sentences, now grumbling, now
whining. �His mind is unhinged,’ Racksole
whispered in English. �Hush!’ said Prince
Aribert. �He understands English.’ But
Prince Eugen took no notice.
TWELFTH NIGHT OR, WHAT YOU WILL
love him; he might have taken his answer
long ago.” “If I did love you as my master
does,” said Viola, “I would make me a willow cabin at your gates and call upon your
name. I would write complaining sonnets
on Olivia, and sing them in the dead of the
night; your name should sound among the
hills, and I would make Echo, the babbling
gossip of the air, cry out Olivia. 0 you should
not rest between the elements of earth and
air but you should pity me.”
“You might do much,” said Olivia; “what
is your parentage?” Viola replied, “Above
my fortunes, yet my state is well. I am a
gentleman.” Olivia now reluctantly dismissed Viola, saying “Go to your master
and tell him I cannot love him. Let him
send no more, unless perchance you come
again to tell me how he takes it.” And Viola
departed, bidding the lady farewell by the
name of Fair Cruelty. When she was gone
Olivia repeated the words, Above my fortunes, yet my Vette is well. I am a gentleman. And she said aloud, “ will be sworn
he is; his tongue, his face, his limbs, action,
and spirit plainly show he is a gentleman.”
And then she wished Cesario was the duke,
and, perceiving the fast hold he had taken
on her affections, she blamed herself or her
sudden love ; but the gentle blame which
people lay upon their own faults has no
deep root : and presently the noble Lady Olivia so far forgot the inequality between her
fortunes and those of this seeming page, as
well as the maidenly reserve (which is the
chief ornament of a lady’s character), that
she resolved to court the love of young Cesario, and sent a servant after him with a
diamond ring, under the pretence that he
had left it with her as a present from Orsino.
She hoped, by thus artfully making Cesario
(9C4) a present of the ring, she should give
him some intimation of her design; and
truly it did make Viola suspect, for, know-
ing that Orsino had sent no ring by her, she
began to recollect that Olivia’s looks and
manner were expressive of admiration, and
she presently guessed her master’s mistress
had fallen in love with her. “Alas !” said she,
“the poor lady might as well love a dream.
Disguise I see is wicked, for it has caused
Olivia to breathe as fruitless sighs for me as
I do for Orsino.
Viola returned to Orsino’s palace and related to her lord the ill success of the negotiation, repeating the command of Olivia,
that the duke should trouble her no more.
Yet still the duke persisted in hoping that
the gentle Cesario would in time be able
to persuade her to show some pity, and
therefore he bade him he should go to her
again the next day. In the meantime, to pass
away the tedious intervals, he commanded
a song which he loved to be sung and he
said, “My good Cesario, when I heard that
song last night, me thought it did relieve my
passion much. Mark it, Cesario, it is old and
plain. The spinsters and the knitters, when
they sit in the sun, and the young maids
that weave their thread with bone, chant
this song. It is silly, yet I love it, for it tells of
the innocence of love in the old times.”
SONG. Como away, come away, Death,

so true did share it. Not a flower, not a

my grave, to weep there. Viola did not fail
to mark the words of the old song, which in
such true simplicity described the pangs of
un-requited love, and she bore testimony
in her countenance of feeling what the song
expressed. Her sad looks were observed by
Orsino, who said to her, “My life upon it,
Cesario, though you are so young, your eye
hath looked upon some face that it loves ;
has it not, boy ? “ “A little, with your leave,”
replied Viola. “And what kind of woman,
and of what age is she ?” said Orsino. “Of
your age, and of your complexion, my lord,”
said Viola, which made the duke smile to
hear this fair young boy loved a woman so
much older than himself, and of a man’s
dark complexion; but Viola secretly meant
Orsino, and not a woman like him.
When Viola made her second visit to Olivia she found no difficulty in gaining access
to her. Servants soon discover when their
ladies delight to converse with hand-some
young messengers; and the instant Viola
arrived the gates were thrown wide open,
and the duke’s page was shown into Olivia’s
apartment with great respect; and when Viola told Olivia that she was come once more
to plead in her lord’s behalf, this lady said,
“I desire you never to speak of him again;
but if you would undertake another suit, I
had rather hear you solicit than music from
the spheres.” This was pretty plain speaking
; but Olivia soon explained herself still more
plainly, and openly confessed her love ; and
when she saw displeasure with perplexity
expressed on Viola’s face, she said, “0 what
a deal of scorn looks beautiful in the contempt and anger of his lip ! Cesario, by the
roses of the spring, by maidhood honour,
and by truth, I love you so, that, in spite of
your *pride, I have neither wit no reason to
conceal my passion.” But in vain the lady
wooed. Viola hastened from her presence,
threatening never more to come to plead
Orsino’s love; and all the reply she made to
Glivia’s fond solicitations was a declaration
of a resolution never to love any woman. No
sooner had Viola left the lady than a claim
was made upon her valour. A gentleman, a
rejected suitor of Olivia, who had learned
how that lady had favoured the duke’s messenger, challenged him to fight a duel. What
should poor Viola do, who, though she carried a man like outside, had a true woman’s
heart, and feared to look on her own sword!
When she saw her formidable Lival advancing towards her with his sword drawn,
she began to think of confessing that she
was a woman ; but she was relieved at once
from her terror, and the shame of such
a discovery, by a stranger that was passing by, who made up to them, and as if he
had been long known to her, and were her
dearest friend, said to her opponent, “If
this young gentleman has done offence,
I will take the fault on me ; and if you offend him, I will for his sake defy you.” Before Viola had time to thank him for his
protection, or to inquire the reason of his
kind interference her new friend met with
an enemy where his bravery was no use to
him; for the officers of justice coming up in
that instant, apprehended the stranger in
the duke’s name to answer for an offence
he had committed some years before; and
he said to Viola, “This comes with seeking
you.” And then be asked her for a purse,
saying, “Now my necessity makes me ask
for my purse, and it grieves me much more
for what I cannot do for you than for what
befalls myself. You stand amazed, but be
of comfort.” His words did indeed amaze
Viola, and she protested she knew him not,
nor had ever received a purse from him; but
for the kindness he had just shown her, she
offered him a small sum of money, being
nearly the whole she possessed. And now
the stranger spoke severe things, charging her with ingratitude and unkindness.
He said, “This youth, whom you see here, I
snatched from the jaws of death, and for his
sake alone I came to Illyria, and have fallen
into this danger.”

H
ITHERTO I had always been driven
by people who at least knew how to
drive ; but in this place I was to get
my experience of all the different kinds of
bad and ignorant driving to which we horses are subjected ; for I was a "job horse,"
and was let out to all sorts of people who
wished to hire me ; and as I was good-tempered and gentle, I think I was oftener let
out to the ignorant drivers than some of the
other horses, because I could be depended
upon. It would take a long time to tell of all
the different styles in which I was driven,
but I will mention a few of them. First,
there were the tight-rein drivers--men who
seemed to think that all depended on holding the reins as hard as they could, never
relaxing the pull on the horse's mouth, or
giving him the least liberty of movement.
They are always talking about "keeping the
horse well in hand," and "holding a horse
up," just as if a horse was not made to
hold himself up. Some poor, broken-down
horses, whose mouths
have been made hard and insensible by
just such drivers as these, may, perhaps,
find some support in it ; but for a horse who
can depend upon its own legs, and who has
a tender mouth, and is easily guided, it is
not only tormenting, but it is stupid. Then
there are the loose-rein drivers, who let the
reins lie easily on our backs, and their own
hand rest lazily on their knees. Of course,
such gentle-men have no control over a
horse if anything happens suddenly.
If a horse shies, or starts, or stumbles,
they are nowhere and cannot help the horse
or themselves, till the mischief is done. Of
course, for myself, I had no objection to it,
as I was not in the habit either of starting
or stumbling, and had only been used to
depend on my driver for guidance and encouragement ; still, one likes to feel the rein
a little in going downhill, and likes to know
that one's driver is not gone to sleep. Besides, a slovenly way of driving gets a horse
into bad, and often lazy habits ; and when
he changes hands, he has to be whipped out
of them, with more or less pain and trouble.

IDDLVY-POM the tailor was very
happy. The 1 King had given him a
beautiful gold pencil with his name
on, because the little tailor had made him
a splendid red party suit. 'Look!' TiddleyPorn said to everyone he met. 'Look! See my
beautiful golden pencil! The King 0-aye it to
me!' Tiddley-Pom's wife was very pleased.
She took a good look at the pencil and said,
'Now, Tiddley-Porn, you just be careful with
this pencil. You know how careless you
are with your things—always putting them
down here, there, and everywhere, and never being able to find them again. Just choose
a safe place for your pencil, and keep it there
when you are not using it.'
'In my pocket?' said Tiddley-Pom. 'No,'
said his wife. 'That's a silly place, because
your pockets always have holes. 'You
should mend them,' said Tiddley-Pom. 'I
do,' said Mrs. Tiddley-Porn, 'but you will
keep putting your scissors into them, Tiddley-Porn, and the points make holes.' 'I'll
keep my pencil on the mantelpiece,' said
Tiddley-Pom. 'No,' said his wife. 'It might
roll off there.' 'Well,' said the tailor. 'I'll tie
it on a bit of string and tie the string to a
button on my coat! What do you think of
that, wife?' 'No good at all,' said Mrs. Tiddley-Pom. 'You are always taking your coat
off—aid you forget
where you leave it, so your pencil would
be gone too! Do you know, Tiddley-Pom,
that I found your coat on the roof the other
day. Now how did it get there?' 'It must have
been left there when I went up to watd the
sweep's brush coming out of the chimney!'
said the tailor going red. 'Oh, wife! I ki-Now
such a good place! I'll keep my pencil behind my ear—like this!' He stuck the lovely
gold pencil behind his ear, and it stayed
there nicely, because Tiddley-Porn had
great big pointed ears, and only the tip of
the pencil could be seen sticking out. 'That's
quite a good place,' said his wife. 'Now I'm
going out shopping, Tiddley. So get on with
your work whilst I'm gone.' Off she went.

Squire Gordon always kept us to our best
paces, and our best man-ners. He said that
spoiling a horse, and letting him get into
bad habits, was just as cruel as spoiling
a child, and both had to suffer for it afterwards. Besides, these drivers are often careless altogether, and will attend to anything
else rather than their horses. I went out in
the phaeton one day with one of them ; he
had a lady, and two children behind.
He flopped the reins about as we started,
and of course gave mc several unmeaning
cuts with the whip, though I was fairly off.
There had been a good deal of road-mending going on, and even where the stones
were not freshly laid down there were a
great many loose ones about. My driver was
laughing and joking with the lady and the
children, and talking about the country to
the right and the left ; but he never thought
it worthwhile to keep an eye on his horse, or
to drive on the smoothest parts of the road ;
and so it easily hap-pened that I got a stone
in one of my forefeet. Now, if Mr. Gordon, or
very happily. He whistled as he worked, and
a good many of his friends came and chatted with him at the open window. One of
them was old Dame Tubby, who had been
away a week with her sister. 'I hear the King
gave you a beautiful gold pencil, TiddleyPotn,' she said. 'Will you show it to me?'
'Oh, haven't you seen it?' said the tailor. 'I'll
love to show it to you.' He put his hands into
his pocket to get the pencil. It wasn't there.
'Funny!' said Tiddley-Pom. 'I usually keep
my pencil there. Wait a minute. I may have
put it on the mantelpiece.' He ran to the
mantelpiece. No pencil there either. Tiddley-Pom scratched his head and thought.
'It must be somewhere about!' he said. 'I
had it about half an hour ago.' 'Perhaps it
has been stolen,' said Dame Tubby. 'A valuable pencil like that might easily be stolen,
you know. A witch or a gnome would be
pleased to have it!' 'Oohl' said Tiddley-Pom
in alarm. `So they might. Oh, Dame Tubby,
Snippy the gnome came in this morning—
and Witch Toddles—and the Yellow Witch
too—and Higgle the gnome as well! Do
you suppose any of them took it?' 'Well, I
shouldn't think so,' said Dame Tubby.
'They are all friends of yours, aren't they?
I'll tell you what to do, Tiddley-Pom. I've
got a spell at home for robbers. I'll go and
get it. Wait a minute. We'll soon get back
your pencil!' Dame Tubby ran off. On the
way home she told everyone about TiddleyPom's lost pencil, and how she was getting
a spell to find the robber. So, before she had
got back to the shop again, about twenty
gnomes, goblins, witches, fairies, and pixies
had arrived at Tiddley-Pom's, all anxious to
hear the latest news of the wonderful pencil.
Dame Tubby came back, most important.
In her hand she carried a little box. 'Look,
Tiddley-Porn,' she said. 'There's a yellow
powder in here. Blow it into the air, and call
upon it to find the one who has the pencil.'
'But how shall I know who has it?' asked
Tiddley-Po tn. 'Oh, you must choose something that the spell makes them do,' said
Dame Tubby, excited. 'Tell the spell to start
John, or, in fact, any good driver had been
there, he would have seen that something
was wrong before I had gone three paces.
Or even if it had been dark, a practised
hand would have felt by the rein that there
was something wrong in the step, and they
would have got down and picked out the
stone. But this man went on laughing and
talking, whilst at every step the stone became more firmly wedged between my shoe
and the frog of my foot. The stone was sharp
on the inside and round on the outside,
which, as everyone knows, is the most dangerous kind that a horse can pick up ; at the
same time cutting his foot, and making him
most liable to stumble and fall. Whether the
man was partly blind or only very careless, I
can't say; but he drove me with that
stone in my foot for a good half-mile before he saw anything. By that time I was going so lame with the pain that at last he saw it
and called out, "Well, here's a go ! Why, they
have sent us out with a lame horse ! What
a shame ! He then chucked the reins and
flipped about with the whip, saying, "Now,
then, it's no use playing the old soldier with
me ; there's the journey to go and it's no
use turning lame and lazy." Just at this time
a farmer came riding up on a brown cob ;
he lifted his hat and pulled up. " I beg your
pardon, sir," he said, " but I think there is
something the matter with your horse, he
goes very much as if he had a stone in his
shoe. If you will allow me I will look at his
feet ; these loose scattered stones are confounded dangerous things for the horses."
" He's a hired horse," said my driver ; "I
don't know what's the matter with him, but
it's a great shame to send out a lame beast
like this." The farmer dismounted and, slipping his rein over his arm, at once took up
my near foot. "Bless me, there's a stone !
Lame ! I should think so ! At first he tried to
dislodge it with his hand, but as it was now
very tightly wedged, he drew a stone-pick
out of his pocket, and very carefully, and
with some trouble, got it out.
Then holding it up, he said, "There, that's
the stone your horse had picked up ; it is a
wonder he did not fall down and break his
knees into the bargain ! "Well, to be sure I"
said my driver, "that is a queer thing ! I never

When he was gone my driver began to flop

which I under-stood that I was to go on,
which of course I did, glad that the stone
was gone, but still in a good deal of pain.

the air with a queer crackling noise and disappeared. Every one stood still and looked
at everyone else. Who was the thief? Nobody moved—and then, suddenly, a most
peculiar thing happened! Tiddley-Pom began to quack! You should have heard him!
'Quarck, quarck, quarck!' he said, opening and shutting his mouth like a beak.
'Quarck, quarck, quarck, quarck!' And then
he put up one leg and began to hop solemn-
ly to the door—and out of it—and down the
street! All the time he quarcked very loudly; it did sound so funny! 'Quarck, quarck,
quarck, quarck, quarck, quarck, quarckl'

the street hopped Tiddley-Porn—and
whom should he meet at the corner but
his wife, coming back from her shopping!
When she saw Tiddley-Pom hopping along,
quacking for all he was worth, she nearly
fell over! `Tiddley-Poml What is the meaning of this?' she cried. 'Quarck, quarck!'
said Tiddley. 'Don't quarck, quarck at me!'
said Mrs. Tiddley-Porn angrily. 'What are
you behaving in this foolish manner for?'
'Quarck, quarck, quarck, quarck!' said
Tiddley, and went on hopping. His wife
took hold of him and shook him angrily.
'Quarck, quarck,' said Tiddley sadly, and
then as his wife shook him again, something flew out from behind his ear and fell

WHITE WATER CROSSING
ORE than a score of men stood where the bridge had
been, and more were arriving on the run with every
passing moment. They stood and stared at disaster.
Great columns of smoke rose from three different parts of the
redwood forest on the south side of the Chicapoo River. Great
flames leaped up from time to time to tint those columns of
smoke with pink and red. The men from the syndicate camp
included all classes of lumber-camp society. There were the
lowly swampers, the four- and two-up drivers, flat-heads,
scalers, skidway men, and sawers as well as the few professional fire fighters who were always kept on duty. The men
had saws and axes, swabs and pails—everything, in fact, with
which to fight a fire. And there they stood, unable to do anything but watch. The crowd had increased to more than half
a hundred. Some of those men, as tough and hard-bitten as
they were, had frank tears in their eyes as they stood watching fine timber eaten up by flames while they were powerless to fight. It was not a silent crowd. Everyone seemed to
be shouting. Some shouted curses at the river that blocked
them. Others cried out imprecations at the fire, at the bridge
that had disappeared, at their fellow men, and at everything
in general. There were a dozen suggesting for crossing the
river. Two men waded in with ropes about their waists. After
dropping into water that was over their heads, they cried in
panic to be hauled back to shore. Some-one suggested trying to go around the river. Some-one else shouted the information that it would be a fifty-mile trip. Then a clatter of
hoofbeats caught everyone's attention. They turned to see
a big horse brought to a skidding halt. Gene Autry leaped to
the ground with a coil of rope clutched in one hand. "Make
way," he cried. The men fell back as Gene rushed toward the
stump that had anchored the bridge. He dropped a noose,
then twirled it overhead as he ran. Ten feet from the stump
his arm shot forward. The noose went up and out, with a trail
of rope behind it. It settled over the stump and Gene pulled
the rope taut. Turning, he shouted, "Come here, Champ !"
Obediently the big horse trotted forward. A hundred questions rose from the crowd. "What's he goin' to do?" "Who is
he?" "Where did he come from?" Gene's voice rang out to
top all others. "Listen to me," he shouted. "I'm going to try
to take a line across that water." Someone shouted, "It can't
be done." Someone else cried, "You'll drown. We tried it."
Again Gene Autry shouted for attention. "If I can get across,"
he yelled, "I'll tie my rope to the other side. Then you can all
grab the rope and pull yourselves across the river." Had there
been time for the placing of bets, the odds would have been
a thousand to one against Gene's success. But the men who
would have given these odds didn't know two things. They
didn't know the man was Gene Autry and they didn't know
the big horse was Champ. Gene was in the saddle with the
end of the rope tied to the pommel. "Come on, Champ," he
cried. "It's up to you, big fellow." Champ plunged into the
churning water and sank below the surface. His head came
up. Gene, straddling the courageous beast, shouted words of
encouragement, while the horse fought the rapids. Horse and
rider were at first swept a few yards downstream. Then Gene
pulled Champ's head around to face obliquely upstream.
Champ's powerful legs pumped in the deep water. He could
just about hold his position in the current. Most of the energy
went into fighting against the current itself to avoid being
swept downstream. But the space between the horse and the
shore became wider and wider. The men on the bank were
silent. They watched, frozen to speechlessness by the valiant
battle of the horse against the fury of the Chicapoo. The fires
in the forest were, for the moment, forgotten. Now Champ
was in midstream where the cur-rent was strongest. He went
beneath the surface, taking Gene Autry under with him.
When the heads of the man and the horse reappeared, they
were several feet downstream. Gene leaned forward, his lips
inches from Champ's ears. "We'll make it, Champ," he said.

Quitting Ganderbal:
Omar’s decision stumps
all, angers many

hief Minister Omar Abdullah’s decision to quit family political bastion
Ganderbal has come as a bolt from
the blue -- both for his die-hard supporters
as well as his detractors. The regional National Conference (NC) Friday announced
that Omar would not seek re-election from
Ganderbal constituency but contest the
Sonawar and Beerwah seats, one in Srinagar district and the other in the Badgam
district of the Valley. But Omar can only
prove the political wisdom of his decision
to quit Ganderbal by winning both or at
least one of the two seats he has chosen
away from the traditional family constituency. There is no denying the fact that the
NC has been severely jolted by the Abdullah family scion leaving his lair.
Omar took to Twitter over his decision: “Having decided two years ago that I
wouldn’t seek re-election from Ganderbal I
have continued to work for the constituency and will always do so”. Commenting on
his decision to fight from two seats, Omar
said: “So when PM candidates do it we
take it as a sign of weakness too or are we
conspicuously silent at that time?” Since
1975 when his grandfather and NC founder
Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah returned to
mainstream politics, the Sheikh stood from
Ganderbal to enter the state assembly.
He again fought from Ganderbal in 1977
and won. This family tradition was followed by Omar’s father Farooq Abdullah
who fought from Ganderbal in 1983, 1987
and 1996, winning thrice in a row. Omar
was fielded by the NC in 2002, but lost to
PDP’s Qazi Muhammad Afzal, a defeat
Omar avenged in 2008 by defeating the
Qazi from Ganderbal to become the chief
minister of the state.
The NC rank and file in Ganderbal are
unhappy that Omar decided to leave the
constituency to Sheikh Ashfaq Jabbar who
had fought against him on a Congress ticket in the 2008 assembly election. “It is not
done. How can you leave Ganderbal after
39 years without even fighting?”, wondered
a senior NC leader from there who did not
want to be named. Another NC leader, who
is a member of the party’s parliamentary
board, told IANS: “Omar Sahib was adamant on not contesting from Ganderbal.
He said he would rather not contest the assembly polls at all if the party forced him to
stand from Ganderbal.”
It needs to be analysed whether Omar’s
decision to quit Ganderbal has been
prompted by reports that the dice was
heavily loaded against him there or he decided to do so for other reasons. “...he once
said only voters enlisted in a constituency
should seek election from there. Omar is
not a voter in Beerwah while he is a voter
in Sonawar,” said a senior Peoples Democratic Party leader. People in Ganderbal,
however, look at it differently.
“He promised he would construct a
home here and live among us after he came
to seek votes during the 2008 elections. He
won and never thought of that promise.
“For getting an ordinary attestation from
our MLA we had to move from pillar to post
because of the CM’s engagements and the
security around him. Yes, he did developmental works here, but trying to justify
his decision by thinking we have been ungrateful is stretching things too far”, said
Abdul Hamid Sheikh 64, a voter in Ganderbal whose family has been die hard supporters of the Abdullahs. Others say even if
Omar did not trust the voters of Ganderbal
he should have stuck on. Muzaffar Ahmad,
42, another voter in Ganderbal, said: “He
could have fought from some other place
also...but abdicating Ganderbal is like the
lion cub running away from his den.” “You
have to go down as a man even if you think
the dice is loaded against you. It was a bad
decision politically that makes Ganderbal
anybody’s game now,” he added.

Gujarat riots will continue to haunt Modi

T
wo Indian newspapers are trying
their best to normalise relations
with Pakistan through bilateral talks
and people-to-people contact. The Times
of India and Pakistan’s Jang jointly run a
concerted Aman Ki Asha or Hope for Peace
campaign to bring South Asian nuclear
neighbours closer. Indian Express, on the
other hand, regularly publishes pieces by
Pakistani commentator Khalid Ahmad
whose insightful writings advocate peace
at any cost. He articulates the desire of
liberal and secular sections in both nations that want India and Pakistan to live
as brothers and not as enemies.
Last week, Indian Express took a step
further ahead. It hosted Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, executive editor of Geo TV
and strategic affairs specialist, at Idea Exchange Programme, a roundtable where
Express editors pick the brain of a knowledgeable guest. The conversation, often
animated, is recorded and printed for
readers to enjoy at leisure.
Mir and Express evidently got along like
a house on fire. Express believes in what it
calls “journalism of courage”. It has also
coined a catchy slogan: �Others cover —
we uncover’. Mir too has enviable credentials. He has interviewed Osama Bin Laden
thrice, including a post-9/11 meeting,
and Mullah Omar besides several other
Al Qaida and Taliban leaders. Naturally,
Express editors wanted to hear inside sto-
ries of his rendezvous with the big boys of
global jihad. And Mir the raconteur didn’t
disappoint them. But it was while recalling
his numerous trysts with Maulana Asim
Umar, who was publicly appointed chief of
Al Qaida’s south Asia chapter on September 4 this year, that Mir dropped a bombshell by revealing that Umar is an Indian
Muslim and that too from Gujarat!
Mir deserves India’s collective gratitude for putting Umar’s nationality and
ethnicity in the public domain. Maybe
India’s security establishment was aware
of Umar’s background long before Mir unveiled it. But ordinary Indians, which includes journalists and commentators like
me, first heard of Umar in 2013 when he
circulated a video exhorting Indian Muslims to sign up. Then came the September 4 announcement appointing him Al
Qaida’s regional chief. But we have never
known that he is an Indian from the state
of Gujarat — known the world over for the
gruesome massacre of Muslims by Hindu
extremists, backed by the administration
then headed by Narendra Modi, now India’s Prime Minister.
Mir disclosed that he first met Umar in
Afghanistan in 2005 — three years after the
pre-meditated, state-sponsored violence
against Muslims shook Gujarat. While
all forms of terrorism must be unequivocally condemned, Mir’s revelation begs the
question: Did Gujarat’s anti-Muslim pogrom that Modi presided over push Umar
into Al Qaida’s arms? Did the Hindu rightIndian state nexus compel Umar to cross
over and pick up the gun to settle scores?
Some may say these questions are hypothetical, but civil society, particularly
Express, must search for answers to these
troubling posers in the public interest,
even if they appear to be conjectural.
My questions are legitimate because
Indian security officials say that the country’s homegrown jihadist outfit, Indian
Mujahideen (IM) — accused of triggering explosions 18 times in 14 cities, killing
hundreds since 2005 — has operational
links with Al Qaida and the Taliban anyway. In a chargesheet filed against IM
operatives in a terror case in 2013, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officially
recorded that IM “was formed in 2003 after
ultra radicalised Muslim youth segregated
from the Student Islamic Movement of India due to communal mobilisation caused
by factors like the riots in Gujarat in 2002
after the Godhra train-burning incident
and the Babri Masjid demolition”.
In the light of NIA’s candid admission in
court, it is imperative to find out whether
Umar did a stint with IM before fleeing
India to join Al Qaida, where his stars are
clearly on the rise.
Unfortunately, the Gujarat riots will cast
their shadow on Modi’s present job every
now and then until he is acquitted by the
apex court. He is still under a cloud. Criminal cases filed against Modi or his Man
Friday Amit Shah are far from over. So the
prime minister’s past is bound to be raked
up whenever critical new information like
Umar’s Gujarati origin surfaces. It does not
give me any pleasure talking about India’s
prime minister and a wanted Al Qaida
ideologue in the same breath, or wondering aloud whether the high-profile fugitive
is a byproduct of the barbaric violence that
Muslims were subjected to 12 years ago.
But the Indian prime minister himself is
not interested in a make-over. He is pretty
cool with his profile as a divisive figure. He
may dangle the carrot of �development’
or �corruption-free’ governance, but his
main objective still is to polarise Hindus
and Muslims for political gain. There is no
other explanation for Modi’s call for a 10year moratorium on Hindu-Muslim strife
in his Independence Day address, which is
a cause for concern.
Moratorium means a temporary or
time-bound suspension. Modi could have
declared that he would ensure HinduMuslim riots never erupt again. But that
is obviously not his goal. All that he wants
is a temporary halt — just a comma, not
a full stop. The duration of the cap — 10
years — is in sync with Modi’s persistent
appeal to voters to give him two terms in
power. So are we to conclude that Modi
wants peace only during his rule? And
that he may engineer communal riots
when he is in the opposition!

Mamata's hold on power becomes precarious

he security risk posed by the illegal immigrants from
Bangladesh has always been known, but few had anticipated that the virtually unchecked flow of aliens
over the years would enable a Bangladeshi terrorist group
to establish a base in West Bengal with the objective of
assassinating the prime minister and leader of the opposition in Dhaka. What is more disconcerting is that their
sinister plot would have remained unknown for a much
longer period but for the accidental explosion of a bomb
in a house in Burdwan district where these were being
manufactured. It is this fortuitous breakthrough for the
security forces which persuaded the National Investigating Agency (NIA) to muscle its way into probing the conspiracy against the wishes of the state government. The
latter had been reluctant to allow the Delhi-based NIA to
start its inquiries on the ground that it militated against
the country's federal structure.
It was on this plea that West Bengal and several other
states, including Gujarat, had stalled the setting up of a
National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) a few years
ago. What the latest events have shown, however, is that
such sensitiveness about federalism is inadvisable at a
time when Islamist terror has become a grave threat in the
sub-continent and elsewhere.
The Mamata Banerjee government's initial objection to
the NIA's intervention in the Burdwan case has,however,
been ascribed less to any concern about the erosion of the
state's rights than about a desire to pose as a champion
of the minorities. The chief minister apparently felt that
a wide-ranging probe into the activities of the Jamaat-ulMujahideen of Bangladesh, which will include raids on
a number of madrasas or seminaries for Muslims, may
alienate a section of the community, which constitutes a
crucial 30 percent of the state's population.
Her attitude has given a handle to the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) to reiterate with great fervour its old allegations
of minority appeasement against "secular" parties. The
fact that the Jamaat infiltrators are believed to have been
entering West Bengal from 2007 onwards, when the leftists were in power, shows that there is little to choose between Communist and non-Communist secularists. The
BJP has now gone to the extent of accusing the Trinamool
Congress of terrorist connections. It is a case of overreaction, of course, but there is little doubt that the latest developments have dealt yet another, and possibly the most
damaging, blow to Mamata Banerjee's reputation, especially where the middle class is concerned. It goes without
saying that she is now facing the most serious crisis of her
career. Till now she had been seen as someone who had
failed to graduate to be a responsible administrator from
her earlier street-fighting avatar as a rabble-rouser. Her
image had also been dented by the lawlessness of the Trinamool cadres, many of whom have switched over to the
ruling dispensation from the leftist parties.
The chit fund scam, which also has a Bangladeshi connection, is another damaging factor for her along with the
dismal state of West Bengal's economy. Notwithstanding
her attempts to woo investors by visiting Mumbai to meet
Mukesh Ambani and other industrialists, and travelling to
Singapore in search of foreign capital, few in the corporate
sector have shown any inclination to invest in West Bengal. It isn't only the cadre raj which has dissuaded them
but also the memories of how Mamata Banerjee hounded
the Tatas out of Singur where they were setting up their
first Nano factory. It is the widespread disillusionment
with her regime which enabled the BJP to raise its vote
share from six percent in 2009 to 16.8 in the general election - an unprecedented hike for a party which had little
presence in the state all these years. The party even secured a slender lead in the assembly segment from where
Mamata Banerjee usually contests.
In the context of the Burdwan episode, however, the
disenchantment with her cannot but increase because of
the surprisingly casual manner in which she initially treated the terrorist activity considering that about 100 of the
Jamaat members are believed to have entered West Bengal and to have travelled to and fro between the state and
Bangladesh at will.
If the police had been tardy about these infiltrations, it
is apparently because they were not sure how vigorously
they should pursue the aliens in view of the ruling party's
sensitivities about the minorities. While the nervousness
of those in the lower levels is understandable, such an attitude reflects poorly on officers in the all-India services.
It can be recalled in this context how Mamata Banerjee
had scuttled the Teesta river waters treaty with Bangladesh when Manmohan Singh was prime minister. Given
the cross-border ramifications of the latest developments,
however, her carelessness about the threats to a friendly
neighbouring country cannot but be electorally hurtful. It
is noteworthy that only three years after her assumption
of power, the conqueror of what was once considered an
impregnable bastion of the Left has been reduced to being
a person whose hold on power is becoming precarious.

Do the Owaisi brothers have a pan India potential?

he two successes of the Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (MIM) of Hyderabad in assembly elections in
Maharashtra may not affect government
formation in Mumbai but reverberations will be felt in the nation's politics
for a long time.
Victories in Aurangabad and Byculla
were awesome, of course, for a first time
entrant. Equally impressive was the fact
that the MIM felt emboldened to field 24
candidates. Of these, three came second
and seven stood third. In the last election, the BJP and Shiv Sena had won seven of these seats. The MIM entry in the
contest demolished the Congress and the
BJP and Shiv Sena picked up 14 seats.
The Congress taunt is: Look, you
helped the BJP-Shiv Sena. That this calculated risk was taken by Muslims shows
how irredeemably low the Congress has
sunk in the community's esteem. Time
was when the BJP, under Atal Bihari Vajpayee's leadership, would have been
embraced by a community desperate to
discard the Congress habit.
But the Narendra Modi establishment
has been indifferent to the Muslims. It
does not wish to come in the way of party
president Amit Shah's tactic of polarizing votes by targeting them. This method of building Hindu nationalism will
remain in play so long as voters are required to be polarized in elections from
state to state. Even as unlikely a state for
communal politics as Tamil Nadu has
not been spared the effort. An obscure
terrorist module has been located in this
state to fuel the polarizing game.
The minorities are determined not
to vote for the Congress or Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP) and are increasingly averse to the Samajwadi party (SP)
and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also.
The BJP is equally resolute in building
Hindu nationalism by targeting them.
So, which way must the Muslims turn?
There is nothing on the horizon which
can threaten the BJP by an infusion of
the Muslim vote. But the Muslim can
be targeted for greater Hindu consolidation. At their wit's end, Muslims are
unlikely to dream up grand strategies
for the future. In a daze, they will stand
still and acquiesce in the politics of the
ghetto. In this mood, the bold rhetoric
of the Owaisi brothers will captivate
them. Over the past decade the national
mood has been determined by whatever choices the 24X7 channels make for
highlighting on their prime time shows.
These choices differ vastly from the fare
available to the Urdu newspaper readership. Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi are frontpage material
for this audience, of course. But even
though the mainstream media ignored
them, their lethal speeches have been
carried extensively on the social media.
Two parallel tectonic plates are moving.
They may clash. One of the factors behind the Samajwadi Party's rout in the
2014 Lok Sabha election were a barrage
of deadly speeches by Asaduddin Owaisi
carried on the social media after he was
stopped from addressing a rally in Azamgarh Feb 1, 2014. The MIM had taken
the Akhilesh Yadav government to task
for a spate of communal riots in Uttar Pradesh during the build up to the
general election. He accused the SP as
equal partners with the BJP in profiting
from communal politics. While the BJP
sought Hindu consolidation, said Owaisi, the SP tacitly encouraged an atmosphere of insecurity so that the Muslim
voters turn to SP for protection.
Returning from the Dhule riots, 150 km
from Aurangabad in January 2013, I was
surprised to hear Akbaruddin Owaisi's
speeches being played by young men
on their mobile phones at a wayside tea
stall. Owaisi brothers, it seemed, were
like pop stars among Muslim youth.
The substance of Akbaruddin Owaisi's speeches do cross red lines and are
intemperate. Asaduddin is more composed. But together the two brothers
represent an explosive style of oratory
which went out of fashion since the days
of the Parsee theatre.
In a mixed crowd their combative
style could lead to violence. But they
maintain their infectious tempo from
behind the fortification of their Hyderabad ghetto. The social networks carry
their oratory far and wide. And now,
encouraged by the market, the Owaisis
are planning to open offices in Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Who
knows, the potential for a dangerous
politics may be developing, with the
MIM orators knitting together hopeless
Muslim ghettos, rather like a series of
Bantustans, ensuring Muslim exclusion
and, for that reason, explosive.

Circus tiger kills girl in China
Beijing, Nov 1 (IANS) A circus tiger killed a girl in China’s southwestern Chongqing Municipality Friday, according to the theme
park.
The eight-year-old girl was attacked by the tiger when she
slipped into a closed animal training site of a circus in Leheledu
Amusement Park while visiting with her relatives Friday night, Xinhua reported.The girl died in the hospital after serious injuries.
The circus has been hired by the Leheledu Amusement Park
for performances. A spokesman for the park said an initial agreement on settling the incident with the victim’s family has been
reached and vowed to beef up security measures.
20 militants killed in
Pakistan clash
Islamabad, Nov 1 (IANS) At least 20 militants and four security
personnel were killed Saturday in a clash in Pakistan’s federally
administered Orakzai Agency, an official said.
Three security personnel were also injured during the clash in
Shirin Dara area, Dawn online reported. The firefight lasted several hours, it said.
Saturday’s clash comes as the army is engaged in an offensive
against local and foreign militants in North Waziristan and Khyber.
Orakzai Agency is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous
tribal regions in the area, where Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaedalinked militants are said to have a strong presence.

crashed on a test flight in
California, killing a pilot
and scattering debris across
the desert -- and raising
questions about the programme’s future.
But Virgin chief Richard Branson, while voicing
shock at yesterday’s accident involving Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, vowed
to push forward towards the
dream of space flight for the
paying public.
“We’ve always known
that the road to space is extremely difficult -- and that
every new transportation
system has to deal with bad
days early in their history,”
he said.
“Space is hard -- but
worth it. We will persevere
and move forward together,”

Sydney Nov 1 (PTI): A firefighter has been killed and at least
two homes have been destroyed by Australian spring wildfires,
officials said on Saturday.
The 38-year-old volunteer firefighter was severely burned Friday while battling a blaze on a farm near the town of Nantawarra
in South Australia state, state Country Fire Service chief officer
Greg Nettleton said. The fire was later contained.
At least two homes were razed by wildfires today on the outskirts of the town of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains west of
Sydney, in New South Wales state, state Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd said.
The service’s deputy commissioner, Bob Rogers, said firefighters had battled to protect homes in Katoomba from flames
fanned by winds of 80 kilometres per hour.
“There’ll be a lot of work to clean up this fire in days to come,”
Rogers told Nine Network television news. The winds had
dropped off and the danger posed by the fire had decreased, although the blaze remained out of control, Shepherd said, adding
that the damage was being assessed.
Robbers targeting Indian
Americans in New Jersey
New York, Nov 1 (IANS) Robbers are targeting the homes of
Indian Americans in New Jersey post-Diwali, a media report
said Saturday.
In the latest such incident, the house of Rajesh Singh at
Netherwood Circle in Middlesex County was targeted by three
masked men Thursday.
“They just came into the house, tied us up and took away
whatever we had,” Pix11.com quoted Singh as saying.
Police are in search of the three masked men who robbed
Singh and his family at gunpoint.The Netherwood Circle incident followed those in South Plainfield and Old Bridge and is
the fourth one after Diwali. All the cases involved Indian American victims.
Nine killed in Afghanistan
suicide bombing
Kabul, Nov 1 (IANS) Nine security personnel were killed while
20 civilians were injured in a suicide car bombing in the eastern
Afghan province of Lowgar Saturday, the provincial government spokesman said.
“One militant set off an explosives-laden vehicle at an Afghan
Local Police (ALP) security checkpoint at around 12 noon. As a
result six ALP personnel and three Afghan army soldiers were
killed and 20 civilians, including six children, sustained injuries,” spokesman Din Mohammad Darwish told Xinhua.
The blast also damaged a mosque and several houses nearby,
the source said, adding the injured were shifted to a district hospital in the province , the capital of which is Pul-e-Alam, 60 km
south of Kabul.
The ALP, or community police, was established in 2010 to
protect villages and districts around country where army and
police have limited presence.
Endangered vampire-like deer
sighted in Afghanistan
Kabul, Nov 1 (IANS) Strange deer with vampire-like fangs
have been spotted more than 60 years after the last confirmed
sighting in the rugged forested slopes of northeast Afghanistan.
Known as the Kashmir musk deer - one of the seven similar
species found in Asia - the last scientific sighting in Afghanistan
was believed to have been made by a Danish survey team traversing the region in 1948.
However, recent surveys led by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), confirmed the presence of the endangered species
in the Nooristan province.
The survey team recorded five sightings, including a solitary
male in the same area on three occasions, one female with a
young one, and one solitary female, which may have been the
same individual without her young one.All sightings were in
steep rocky outcrops interspersed with alpine meadows and
scattered dense high bushes of juniper and rhododendron.

senior military officer Isaac Zida, who was in
command of the presidential guard, Saturday
announced he has seized power as head of state
during the interim period.
“I now assume... the responsibilities of head
of the transition and of head of state to assure
the continuation of the state” and a “smooth
democratic transition”, Xinhua cited Col. Zida
as saying in a statement aired by a local television station.
Zida said an interim body would be established in order to restore constitutional order.
He also ordered the closure of borders and
announced the invalidation of a statement
made Friday by the country’s army chief Nabere Honore Traore stating he has assumed power
as head of state on a transitional basis.Traore’s
declaration was rejected by demonstrators and

Iraqis were killed and 2,010 others were

including 139 policemen, and 417 Iraqi security forces personnel were killed, while
1,490 civilians, including 172 policemen,

Gold, silver recover
on scattered buying
New Delhi: After two days of losses, gold prices recovered by Rs 50
to Rs 26,550 per 10 gm in the national capital on Saturday on buying
at prevailing levels by jewellers and retailers even as metal remained
weak overseas. Silver followed suit and gained Rs 100 to Rs 36,250 per
kg on scattered enquiries from industrial units. Traders said revival
of buying by ornament makers and retailers at existing levels, mainly
supported the upside in gold prices. They said, however, a weakening trend overseas, capped the gains on the domestic markets here.
In Delhi, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity recovered by Rs 50 each
to Rs 26,550 and Rs 26,350 per 10 grams, respectively, after losing Rs
1,000 in the previous two days. Globally, gold fell by 2.3 per cent to
USD 1,171.60 an ounce in New York on Friday as strengthening dollar
eroded demand. Sovereigns, however, remained under pressure and
fell by another Rs 100 to Rs 23,800 per piece of eight grams. Silver ready
traded Rs 100 higher at Rs 36,250 per kg and weekly-based delivery
rose by Rs 220 to Rs 35,800 per kg. On the other hand, silver coins held
steady at Rs 61,000 for buying and Rs 62,000 for selling of 100 pieces. .
Ministries told to
expedite budgetary process:
Agriculture Minister
New Delhi Nov 1 (PTI): In a bid to tackle delay in implementation
of crucial projects, all ministries have been asked to initiate the budgetary process much in advance so that funds can be released soon
after the Budget is passed. “After the Budget is passed, normally it
takes 5-6 months to get the allocated funds released. In a recent cabinet meeting, all ministries have been told to start the necessary work
in advance for the next Budget,” Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan
said at the 41st foundation day of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB). This was conveyed to all ministers informally
after a recent cabinet meeting, he said. “We have been told in our Department to start the process now so that funds for crucial schemes
are released within 15 days after the Budget is passed in February,”
he said on the sidelines of the event when asked to elaborate on the
issue. The timely release of allocated funds is crucial for the successful implementation of various schemes, he added.
The Finance Ministry has already initiated the Budgetary exercise
for the 2015-16 fiscal by seeking inputs from various Ministries and
Departments. The ministries have been asked to submit revised estimates of expenditure for 2014-15 and demand for grants for the next
financial year beginning April 1, 2015. The Budget, which contains
revised estimates for the current financial year and estimates for the
next fiscal, is presented on the last working day of February by the
Finance Minister in the Lok Sabha. This would be the second Budget
of the Modi government.

Agartala Oct 1 (PTI): A meeting of technical experts from India and
Bangladesh would be held here on November 3 for drawing the radial
inter connection line for transportation of power to Bangladesh. Stating this Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) Chairman
and Managing Director S K Roy said today 100 mw power from the
726 mw thermal power project at Palatana in Gomati district would
be transported to Bangladesh. While it was decided by the two countries that the power would be transported from Suryamaninagar
power sub-station here to Comilla district of Bangladesh, the meeting would decide about the route of transportation, he told reporters.
The newly constructed Suryamaninagar sub-station in West Tripura
district was erected with installed capacities for international power
trading, Roy said adding the cost of transportation of power would
be borne by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. Meanwhile,
ONGC sent natural gas to Palatana project during the day for power
generation by the plant’s second unit, which is expected to become
operational in the current year, V P Mahawar, General Manager of
ONGC-Tripura Asset said. The plant now generates 363 mg watt power, he added. Shriram City Union Q2 Net up 8.66% Chennai: Shriram
City Union Finance has reported a 8.66 per cent increase in second
quarter net profits at Rs 138 crore. The city-based company, which is

Festive season fails to cheer car
makers, Oct sales subdued

Festival season failed to
bring cheer to car makers,
as major players including
Maruti Suzuki India, Hyundai and Mahindra failed
to register significant sales
growth during the month,
which otherwise has been
one of the best periods for
vehicle sales in the country.
While Maruti Suzuki and
Hyundai posted marginal
rise in sales during October,
others including utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar and
Ford registered decline in
sales as compared to same
period of previous year as
sentiments remained subdued. Honda Cars India
was the exception posting
18.8 per cent rise in October
sales.
The country’s largest car
maker Maruti Suzuki said
its domestic sales during the
month stood at 97,069 units,
up 1 per cent from 96,062
units in October last year.
The company said sales
during the month, which
sees major festivals, were
impacted due to less number of working days during
the month.
“Owing to festivals and
state elections, during October 2014 Maruti Suzuki
had 19 working days. This
limited the availability of
vehicles during the month.
In October 2013 Maruti Suzuki had 24 working days,”
the company said. Exports
were also affected during
the month as shipment of
around 1,000 units to Algeria and Egypt was rescheduled to November 2014 due
to cyclonic conditions in
Gujarat area, it added.

Jet fuel prices
slashed by 7.3%
New Delhi Nov 1 (PTI): Jet fuel (ATF)
rates were on Saturday cut by a steep 7.3
per cent, the fourth straight reduction
in prices since August on back of falling international oil rates. The price of
aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, at
Delhi was cut by Rs 4,987.7 per kilolitre,
or 7.3 per cent, to Rs 62,537.93 per kl, oil
companies announced today.
This is the fourth reduction in jet fuel
rates since August. Rates were cut by almost 3 per cent or Rs 2,077.62 per kl on
October 1. Declining international oil
prices have made imports cheaper, resulting in price reduction. In Mumbai,
jet fuel will cost Rs 64,414.98 per kl from
today as against Rs 69,610.50 per kl previously. The rates vary because of differences in local sales tax or VAT. Jet fuel
constitutes over 40 per cent of an airline’s
operating costs and the price cut will ease
the financial burden of cash-strapped
carriers. No immediate comment was
available from airlines on the impact
of the price cut on passenger fares. The
three fuel retailers -- IOC, Hindustan
Petroleum Corp and Bharat Petroleum
Corp -- revise jet fuel and non-subsidised
LPG prices on the first of every month,
based on the average international prices
in the preceding month.
On Friday, oil companies had cut petrol price by Rs 2.41 a litre and diesel by
Rs 2.25 per litre. The sixth reduction in
price since August has meant that petrol costs Rs 64.25 a litre in Delhi, Rs 9.36
per litre less than what it cost in July. The
second reduction in diesel rates in one
month has led to price coming down to
Rs 55.60 a litre.
J P Morgan found hackers through
breach of corporate event website
New York Nov 1 (PTI): J P Morgan
Chase & Co learned about hackers who
stole the bank`s contact information
for 76 million households and 7 million
small businesses through a corporate
event that it sponsors, the Wall Street
Journal reported, citing people familiar
with the matter.
According to the report, the bank
discovered that the intruders had used
some of the same offshore servers to
hack both the bank and the website of
the J P Morgan Corporate Challenge.
It was not clear when the bank might
have discovered the problem had the
hackers not used the same I.P. addresses to launch cyberattacks on both
the bank and the Corporate Challenge
race websites, WSJ reported, citing
people briefed on the matter. The Corporate Challenge website, operated by
Simmco Data Systems, was later taken
offline after the hacking of the site was
discovered, WSJ reported.
According to the report, the website
has been restored by the bank ahead of
upcoming races in Shanghai and Singapore, but has moved the payments to a
Chase website. Officials at J P Morgan
Chase were not available for comment.
The hackers had originally gained access to the bank`s network by compromising the computer an employee with
special privileges used both.

the Ranji Trophy cricketers to play at

the main square, which will be used
for some other sports competition.
The stadium, which got a huge facelift for the 2010 Games, is the home
of Indian athletics but the stadium’s
administrators - Sports Authority of
India employees - have decided that
the Indian Super League (ISL) match
between the Delhi Dynamos and FC
Goa, scheduled to be held on November 13, is more important than the
throwing events scheduled to be held
between November 2-5. The officials
feel that the throwing events - discus,
shot put, javelin and hammer throw
- could damage the turf as well the
draining system put in place for the
football tournament. They insist that
the track events can be allowed inside the stadium but the throwers will
have to compete outside. An angry
Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has
sent a strong letter of protest to SAI.
“...We have been informed verbally by SAI office that the cage for
the throw events cannot be installed
in the main arena as apparently SAI
has made commitment to the Indian
Soccer League despite the fact the
JN Stadium was constructed primarily for holding athletics competitions
and training at a cost of almost Rs
1,000cr to the state exchequer during the Commonwealth Games Delhi
2010,” AFI secretary general CK Valson wrote in a letter to SAI DG on October 28, a copy of which is with TOI.

West Indies Cricket Board
(WICB) will have to cough up
nearly $42 million in order to
stave off a lawsuit from the
Board Of Control For Cricket In
India (BCCI), stemming from
the abandoned tour of India last
month. Indian authorities Friday
told the WICB that its losses as a
result of the abandoned one-day
and Test tour had been estimated at $41.97 million, and gave the
regional board 15 days in which
to come up with a plan of compensation, reports CMC.
The BCCI had announced two
weeks ago it would seek compensation from the WICB for losses
sustained as a result of the cancelled tour, and followed through
with formal correspondence to
the Antigua-based organisation
Friday. Media rights make up the
bulk of the losses with the BCCI
estimating them at just over $35
million, while ticket sales account for around $2 million and
the title sponsorship from Micromax estimated at $1.6 million. The BCCI has also factored
in losses in kit sponsorship from
Nike, team sponsorship, in-stadia
BCCI imposes claim
worth 250 cr on WICB
sponsorship and stadium concessionaires, in the compensation
package. “The BCCI calls upon
the WICB to formally inform the
BCCI, in writing, of the steps it
intends to take to compensate the
BCCI towards the losses quantified above as well as those losses
yet to be quantified by the BCCI
in relation to the cancelled WICB
tour,” said the letter, signed by
BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel.
“In the event the BCCI does
not receive such a proposal in acceptable terms, within a period
of 15 days from receipt of this letter, please note that the BCCI has
peremptorily instructed its attorneys to initiate steps for recovery
of the losses by filing appropriate legal proceedings against the
WICB in the appropriate Indian
court and you may treat this notice as a formal demand in that
regard.” Imran Khan, the WICB’s
corporate
communications
manager, confirmed the WICB
had received the BCCI letter but
opted not to comment further.
In detailing its losses, the BCCI
said the cancelled tour had resulted in “adverse financial
ramifications” and accused the
WICB of having “complete disregard” for legal commitments.
“The consequences on the BCCI
of not delivering a scheduled
home tour to its members, sponsors, broadcasters and the fans
are multi-fold and crippling,” the
BCCI letter said.
“The BCCI is faced with huge

the biggest festival season. “Diwali in India is a monumental

and constitutes an approximation of the losses that BCCI is
able to quantify at this time”,
the Indian board said any other
losses would be communicated
to the WICB at a later date.

The unit of Neeraj Pandey's tentatively titled film `Baby`,
starring Akshay Kumar, landed in trouble here after they allegedly failed to pay dues of Rs. 2.5 million (in Nepali currency) to a Nepali film management company.
"We have not detained any one. We have called both the
parties to reach an understanding," Abhi Narayan Kafle,
Deputy Superintendent of Nepal Police at Gaushal Beat,
told IANS.
"The Nepali side seized the shooting material claiming
the Indian side failed to pay some due amount, so we have
brought both the parties to the police station. We are trying
to find a common ground," added Kafle.
Aksahy left the city Wednesday after completing the
shooting in various locations in Kathmandu.
Ram Krishna Pokhrel, chairman of the film management
company Ice-fall Adventure Pvt Ltd, seized the shooting
materials after the unit reached Tribhuvan International
Airport to fly to Turkey via India without clearing his dues.
Ice-fall claimed that expenses on the shoot were around
Rs.9.5 million and they had received only Rs.7 million.
The Indian film unit sought the Nepal police's help.
The film unit claimed they missed the 7 a.m. flight Thursday and it has resulted in more financial loss for them. They
told the police that they made an arrangement where they
were leaving one of their team members in the city to clear
the dues, but Ice-fall rejected their proposal.
After failing to catch the flight, we have lost another Rs.5
million (Indian currency), the Indian team told police.
The two parties didn't reach any understanding till evening.
The film revolves around two smugglers who dupe people
in Mumbai and start a new business in Kathmandu. Pandey
shot in posh locations around the city.

The Food-Filled Experience
of Digesting Delhi

For one to enjoy a trip
to the capital of our country, three things are of utmost importance – a love
for history, a good driver
and a sturdy stomach.
While I had the first two
– I love walking around
old monuments and capturing their timelessness
with my camera, and I
had Hukam Chand ji with
me – the third one was
missing. But two weeks of
roaming around through
the streets of Delhi, and
I can digest almost anything!
For me, any visit to
Delhi without a stop at
Nirula’s is incomplete,
so that’s where I go first.
I was at the famous Connaught Place which is a
maze of restaurants, eateries and convenience
stores. After downing
a milkshake and a few
marshmallows, I headed
straight to Wenger’s, another favourite of mine.
Apart from the pastries,
the chicken sandwiches
there are to die for, as
are the chocolate �japs’.
But the japs aren’t always available; depends
on your luck. I even got a
peek inside the Wenger’s
kitchen and I must say, it
really is wonderful.
My next stop was the
Oriental Fruit Mart where
I had the most amazing
cold coffee after a long,
long time. Hukam ji also
took me to this little stall
selling vada-sambar. At
first, I was hesitant to taste
anything there (looking at
the cook’s clothes), but
the food turned out to be
surprisingly tasty. In fact,
we went to the same stall
again a few days later on
my insistence!
The next day, I went
straight
to
Chandni
Chowk. This time I was
with a few friends and they
totally freaked out over
the golgappas in Dariba!
We sampled papad ka
paratha, aloo paratha and
khoya paratha in the famous Paranthe wali Galli.
Although we were bursting at the seams, we managed to make some space
for the fruit kuliyas, aloo
chaat and kanji vadas.
Of course, all that eating had to have some effect and it did! Without
going into details, all I
can tell you is that the
greedy foodie in me was
back in the same area a
couple of days later, my
appetite having returned
with a vengeance. I then
tasted the rest of the Delhi
fare - Nalli Nihari, Paaya,
lassi (in tall, clay kulhads),
jalebis and �imartis’ and
Nargisi Kofta.

1. There is no material substitute for quality time: It’s understandable that you can’t

Lakshmi Prabhu was tired. She had
a three-month-old child who took up all
of her time and sleep. She was breastfeeding and friends had told her that,
that was as good a contraceptive as any.
“My baby was 12 weeks old,” says the
sales professional. “I was breastfeeding
her and my doctor said I was unlikely
to get my period. Despite not getting
my period, I conceived. I did not even
realise it for two months because I was
not looking for signs of pregnancy.”
Lakshmi’s first daughter was a year old
when she had the second one.
Bangalore-based gynaecologist Dr
Rajani Nayak says, “Nature allows natural spacing of pregnancy to some extent.
Prolactin, the hormone that works to
make milk, also inhibits the release of
reproductive hormones. But the way
it works depends on many factors and
cannot be taken as a foolproof method
of contraception.”
When’s your period?
Rajani explains how Lakshmi’s second pregnancy, through rare, came to
be. The first six months after pregnancy
are normally considered safe because
mothers are still exclusively nursing
their babies. This keeps the levels of
prolactin high and lowers the chances of
conceiving. But when the frequency of
nursing reduces, levels of prolactin also
decrease and you become fertile again.
“The chances of you getting your period
at this time are low, but not impossible,”
says Dr Nayak. “You start ovulating any
time after three months of delivering
your child and you may not know it has
happened. You are likely to get your first
period a fortnight after you have ovulated. You could easily get pregnant in
that time. Also, if you are supplementing
the baby’s feed with other food, levels of
prolactin will not be that high.”
Kindergarten teacher Manjula
Ramappa too got pregnant when her
child was a year old. “Nobody told me
that once you start feeding your child
other food or supplement the feed
with formula, this wouldn’t work. I was
not prepared for the result.” Dr Nayak
believes it’s better to get an intrauterine
device fixed early on, but pills are a bad
idea, as they can have side-effects.

She brought the roof down How to Enjoy the Experience
As heritage homes make way for highrises across the city, one
woman tells the story of how she chose to renovate the dilapidated
roof of her family home rather than break it all down.
All around us in Chennai, I see
priceless old homes and charming
bungalows demolished to make
way for skyscrapers and apartment
complexes that look like beehives.
When you renovate an old house
instead of tearing it down, you keep
memories intact and let bygone
building styles thrive. To demolish
or renovate is a million dollar question, but costs apart, renovating is
a rare pleasure that allows one’s
imagination wide scope.
I took up the challenge with my
old family home. The old Burma
teak raftered ceiling had sprung a
hundred leaks, the walls were flaking, and the walls had cracks. My
family was impatient — demolition
it is, they said. On the other hand,
we had the coolness of a lime-andbrick building, gleaming red-oxide
floors, and fresh air and sunlight
coming in from large windows.
I was reluctant to let it all go in
return for steel and glass. I finally
decided the solution was to remove
the old roof and put in a new one,
while keeping the old home intact.
I decided to consult the
Structural Engineering Dept of
IIT, Madras, for an expert opinion.
Off I went, unknown and unheralded, to meet the right person,
who it turned out was one Professor Devdas Menon. The professor
studied my house plans, saw the
building, and said that the roof
should be removed gently, brick by
brick. The pillars in the walls were
strong, he said, and new concrete
beams could be put in place before
putting on a new RCC roof. These
beams would take, and disperse
the load, giving my building new
strength and life.
He also advised me to use a
particular grade of cement that’s
used for bridges. Further, Prof.
Menon designed the new roof,
explaining the details to my builder
and instructing him to come and
see him whenever he had a doubt
during the building process. One
of his able students was deputed to
check on the work and report back

admit that there are many factors
we must address when doing up a
home. It’s not just what we want
in them, but also a whole world of
other things that deserves equal
attention. Some of them being:

The juggle between our aspirations and functionality.
But, it’s not the amount of
money we plan to spend on our
homes that makes us nervous. It’s
the many dilemmas and amplified
scepticism and incertitude.

intellectual and professional challenge. Under his guidance, we went
to work. “I’m taking the roof off,” I
said to a couple of friends, and was
faced with such a look of shock that
I decided to keep quiet about it
from then on. We located the right
mason, an old hand at dismantling
masonry. I moved downstairs,
surrounded by a million packed
possessions. I dropped out of the
social scene, cocooned in my roofless house, the open skies shut
meticulously by the workers each
evening with tied-down tarpaulin
sheets. Gradually, the rafters were
removed and stored in the garage.
We had a flurry of buyers for the
lovely old wood. “Not now,” we
said, having plenty of use for it.
One month later, the day dawned
when the new roof would be cast.
The road gang arrived, and all was
noise and loud chatter. About six
hours later, the roof had been poured
in place. The hive of activity of the
past month came to a lull for the next
20 days. The roof had to be given
time to set before de-shuttering
could be done. Finally, the workers
came back to work and the new roof
was a reality. Getting the right engineer, who is not only experienced
but who has a positive attitude, is
the key to any building. Combined
with reasonably good labour, we can
definitely build a dream home. A
lot of common sense and plenty of
patience also play a vital part.

Butter palak chicken
Chocolate Marble Cake
About this recipe: “This is a
cake with wonderful flavours,
thanks to mocha and peanut
butter! “
Ingredients
Serves : 12
200g unsalted butter
150g chunky or smooth
peanut butter
100g caster sugar
125g light brown sugar
4 large eggs
250g plain flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
100ml milk
100g chocolate chips,
chopped smaller
1 teaspoon instant coffee
granules
1 heaped tablespoon of
Camp coffee essence
1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
For the Glaze (optional)
2 tablespoons of apricot
jam
2 tablespoons of water
Directions
Prep:20min › Cook:50min ›
Ready in:1hr10min
Preheat oven to 180 degrees
C. Slightly grease and flour a
25cm /10” cake tin.
Combine butter, peanut
butter and both types of sugar
in a mixing bowl. Beat until light
and creamy, about 3-5 minutes
on low. Add eggs one at a time,
beating well after each addition.
Sift together the flour, baking
powder and salt.
Gradually fold the sifted flour
and milk, alternately, into the
egg mixture, stirring well after
each addition.
Divide mixture into two
equal portions. Add chocolate
chips to one portion; mix. Blend
the coffee granules, essence and
cocoa together and mix lightly
until the ingredients are wellblended to get a mocha-flavour
- add this to the other portion.
Put a ladleful of choc-chip
batter into the prepared tin, top
this with a ladleful of mochaflavoured batter and alternate
the two steps until both portions
are used up.
To get a marble effect, draw
a wooden skewer through the
batter, taking care not to touch
the bottom of the tin. Lightly
shake the tin to get rid of any air
bubbles. Bake in a preheated
oven for 25 mins. Then turn the
oven temp down to 160 degrees
C. Continue cooking for another
25 minutes.
To test the cake, touch it
lightly with the fingertips. If it is
cooked through, the cake should
spring back immediately when
touched. Cool the cake in the
mould for 5 to 10 minutes before
turning it out onto a wire rack.
To prepare the glaze, combine apricot jam and water in a
small saucepan. Heat gently to
melt the jam, stirring continuously. Brush cake with glaze.
Leave to cool before serving.

Melt butter in a pan and add
the garam masala to it. Add in onion,
garlic, spinach, tomatoes, dhaniya
powder, pepper and salt. Mix well and
sautГ© until the tomatoes soften.
Add the chicken pieces to the
pan. Cook on medium heat until
chicken is done. Serve with a dollop of
butter and enjoy with chapaati or naan.

Add water for extra curry.

Rajasthani Lasun ki chutney
Chickpea and Potato Stew
Ingredients
Makes 6 servings, 1 1/4 cups each
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
3 large onions (coarsely chopped) (4 cups)
4 cloves garlic (minced)
1 teaspoon cumin seed
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cardamom
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Curry powder to taste
1 pound new potatoes, scrubbed and quartered
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 19-ounce can chickpeas (rinsed)
1 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted
3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
3/4 cup low-fat or fat-free plain Greek yogurt (optional)
Directions
Step 1: Chop all your veggies. Heat oil in a Dutch oven (or a large pot) over medium heat.
Step 2: Add onions to the pot and cook, stirring often, until fragrant and beginning to brown, for 5 to 6 minutes. Add garlic and cook,

Step 3: Bring the stew to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer, partially covered, stirring occasionally and adding 1/2 cup water, if

This recipe is a favourite Indian breakfast dish. Veg Daliya Upma’s filling is high in fibre and rich in magnesium. It keeps you satiated for a longer time by making you feel fuller. This healthy snack

rise to hypertension, among other unhealthy repercussions.
Serves : 4
Ingredients
Broken wheat (dalia) : 2 cups
Onions (chopped): 1 medium-sized
Green chilies: 1-2
Ginger (Grated): 1 teaspoon
Green peas: ВЅ cup
Carrots (diced) : ВЅ cup
Mustard seeds:1 tsp
Oil:2 1/2 tsp
Chopped coriander for garnish
Method
• Clean and wash the broken wheat thoroughly.
• Drain and keep aside.
• Heat the oil in a pressure cooker. Add the mustard seeds.
• When they splutter, add the onions, green chilli and ginger
and sautГ© till the onions turn translucent.
• Add the green peas, carrots, broken wheat and salt and sauté
for 3- 4 minutes.
• Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
• Garnish with the coriander and serve hot.

Love the sear of a stainless skillet but
not the way peppers can start to meld to
the bottom midway through cooking? A
little more oil should help. But don’t just
pour it over the top of the food or you’ll
end up with a greasy, soggy mess. Instead, use a metal spatula to loosen the
vegetables or meat and push them to one
side of the skillet. Then tilt the pan so the
empty area is over the heat. Add the oil
to the empty area (1 or 2 tablespoons
should do it) and let it get hot before

Breast milk compound
may prevent deadly
preemie infection
When little Georgia Cullen was born four months
early last February, she weighed less than two pounds.
Her doctors supplemented her mother Julie’s breast
milk with formula to help her grow, and she did. But last
March, Georgia developed a dangerous and potentially deadly intestinal infection. “Her stomach started to
swell up,” says her father, Jim Cullen, of Erie, Pa. She was
flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
“To have your daughter born early is scary. She was doing so well up to that point, so it was even scarier.”
Georgia pulled through, but lost much of her intestine to the infection. Now the surgeon who operated
on her thinks he’s helped find a compound in human
breast milk that may prevent that complication.
Her condition, called necrotizing enterocolitis, is
an immune system overreaction that kills thousands
of premature babies every year. “Breast milk for many
years has been known to protect against this disease,”
says Dr. David Hackam, who treated Georgia.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC for short) affects
about 25,000 babies a year in the United States, according to the American Pediatric Surgical Association. The
risk goes way up for babies born weighing less than
three pounds, 1,500 grams. Anywhere between 20 percent and 30 percent of them die, according to a 2009
study in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.

How much is enough? Help your kids get a good night’s sleep
Poor sleep in kids has been linked to a raft of problems later in life, including obesity, learning
difficulties, and the risk of mental illnesses such as anxiety disorders and depression.
A study in the April issue of the
Journal of Sleep Research found that
kids who didn’t get enough deep sleep
had more behavior problems which
continued to be an issue a year later.
Kids who got good sleep were more
adaptable than those who did not.
It’s not as if the message is being
lost on parents. An article in the Wall
Street Journal noted an increase in the
number of kids showing up for overnight studies in sleep clinics.
With so much at risk, parents may
be wondering when they should toddle
the toddler off to a specialist. TODAY
took a closer look at the issue with Dr.
Lisa Thornton, an assistant professor
in the departments of pediatrics and
surgery at the University of Chicago’s
Pritzker School of Medicine and medical director of pediatric and adolescent
rehabilitation at KidsRehab, a joint program between and LaRabida Children’s
Hospital, and Schwab Rehabilitation
Hospital.
While most kids have occasional
problems sleeping, you might want
to take a closer look if “your child has
things like night terrors, sleep walking,
or excessive snoring,” Thornton said on
TODAY. “Those can be signs of a real
problem, a sleep disorder that needs to
be managed medically.”
The occasional bout of snoring isn’t
an issue, Thornton said. But, if you can
hear your child snoring a room away, it
could be a sign of sleep apnea, a condition in which your child will periodically stop breathing.
The lack of oxygen during those
moments is what jolts kids (and adults)
awake in the middle of the night. “You
wake up and try to breath again and
you never get into that nice deep sleep
that you’re supposed to get into,”
Thornton said. “And that leads to
excessive daytime sleepiness. Even if
they’re in bed all night they wake up
exhausted.”
Thornton listed signs indicating
that a child might have serious sleep
problems.

Thornton reminds parents that
children need a lot more sleep than
adults do.
“Children sleep a lot, especially babies,” she said. “Babies sleep between
14 and 16 hours a day, including naps.
So they may seem to be awake a lot
but they just awaken frequently. And
that’s normal. In preschoolers you want
about 12 to 14 hours of total sleep a
day. And once they’re in school 10 to 12
hours a day is what kids really need to
be fresh and aware and not cranky.”
How can we help our kids get the
sleep they need? Thornton suggested a
few tips.
A cool, dark room is best
Very little stimulation
Quiet in the house if possible
Make bedtime a habit/routine
Give time to let your child’s brain
calm down
Allow time for your child to sleep
And remember, Thornton said, that
it can take time for a kid to fall asleep.
“Some people think you’re supposed
to get in bed and fall asleep in five
minutes,” she added. “It takes about
20 minutes of just relaxation to fall
asleep.”
If you follow all the good sleep rules
and “your child still seems to be having
daytime sleepiness, crankiness, trouble
paying attention, bad behavior problems, those are things to discuss with
your physician to see if they might be
linked with sleep,” Thornton said.
And if you do decide to take your
child to the pediatrician, “a good thing
to do [ahead of time] is to keep a sleep
log,” Thornton said. “Measure when
does the child actually sleep and when
are they awake. That will give us a really
good clue as to whether this is a problem with sleeping or something else.”

Detecting and Dealing With Eczema
When your baby has itchy, scaly
skin that makes her scratch all day
and night, you want to do whatever
you can to ease her discomfort.
Fortunately, several effective
eczema treatments can lead to a
happier baby.
Bathe Often
Most pediatric dermatologists
suggest giving you baby a bath
every day if she has eczema. Baths
add moisture to dry skin and get rid
of surface bacteria that can cause
skin infections.
“It can be fun for baby, and
it’s good for bonding with the
parents,” says Amy S. Paller, MD,
professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg
School of Medicine in Chicago.
“It’s a wonderful way to get hydration into the skin.”
Use fragrance-free, mild soaps
or soap-less cleansers intended for
sensitive skin. Bathe your baby for
five to 10 minutes, pat her dry to
retain some moisture on her skin,
then apply moisturizer.
Moisturize Regularly
To soothe dryness and itching, smooth moisturizer on your
baby’s skin at least twice a day.
Dry skin can make eczema worse
and bring out more inflammation, says Lawrence F. Eichenfield,
MD, professor of pediatrics and
dermatology at the University of
California, San Diego. Moisturizing
often helps break what he calls “the
itch-scratch cycle.”
Thick, moisturizing creams
and ointments work better on your
baby’s skin than lotions, which
have more water. If your doctor has
prescribed anti-itch cream, apply it
before the moisturizer.
You may want to switch moisturizers depending on the season.
Petroleum-based ointments are
ideal for cold-weather months but
too thick for summertime. A lighter
cream is better in warm weather.
Skip �Natural’
Organic and natural baby products are popular, but most have
herbs and plant-based products
that can cause reactions in babies
with sensitive skin.
“People think about organic
products as being healthy,” says
Nanette Silverberg, MD, director of
pediatric dermatology at St. Luke’sRoosevelt Hospital Center in New
York City. “But most kids are going
to be sensitive to some extract,
fragrance or flowers.” Her advice?
“Ask your doctor for a product line
that’s been tested in children and is
well-proven for sensitivities.”
Consider Diluted Bleach Baths
Silverberg suggests diluted
bleach baths for babies over 6
months who have moderate or
severe eczema. They’re especially
helpful if your baby has crusting
on the skin. Bleach helps remove
staph bacteria -- a known eczema
trigger -- without resorting to antibiotics. Talk to your pediatrician
before giving your baby a bleach
bath. Use 1 teaspoon of bleach per
1 gallon of water or Вј cup per full
bathtub.
Sounds harsh? It’s just like
taking your child into a swimming
pool with chlorine, Silverberg says.
And your baby may have fewer
flare-ups and less discomfort as a
result, she says.
Squelch Scratching
You can put anti-scratching
mittens on a young baby’s hands to
stop her from scratching. But that
doesn’t work well on older babies
and toddlers. To reduce irritation,
keep your child’s fingernails cut
short and filed with an emery board,
so they’re not sharp. If you notice
your child scratching more than
usual, take her to the doctor, who
can prescribe anti-itch medicine.

Why it may be OK to spit-clean your baby’s binkie
If you suck your child’s pacifier
clean, there’s no need to be embarrassed. You may actually be helping
your kids avoid eczema and asthma,
Swedish researchers say. “It was surprising that the effect was so strong,”
says pediatric allergist Dr. Bill Hesselmar of Queen Silvia Children’s
Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden,
lead author of the study published
Monday in the journal Pediatrics.
Of 136 infants who used a pacifier in their first six months, 65 had
parents who reported sucking the
pacifier to clean it. In those children, both eczema and asthma were
strongly reduced when they were
examined at 18 months of age. At
36 months of age, the protective effect remained for eczema but not for
asthma.
The study didn’t indicate how
mom and dad’s saliva was protective or whether it was filtering out
germs, but spit-cleaning the binkie
had no effect on respiratory illness
-- meaning babies aren’t more likely
to get cold or flu viruses from their
parents sucking on the paci. “Transmission of colds/virus infections are
common in a household because
of “close contact”, independent of
if the parent’s suck on their child’s
pacifier or not,” Hesselmar says.
When parents clean a pacifier
with saliva, they’re introducing gut
microflora, the microscopic organisms -- mostly bacteria -- that live
in the digestive tract. “We know that
if infants have diverse microflora in
the gut, then children will have less
allergy and less eczema,” says Hesselmar. “When parents suck on the
pacifier, they are transferring microflora to the child.”
Scientists hypothesize that those
tiny organisms help prevent allergy,
eczema and asthma by stimulating
an infant’s developing immune system. “The most exciting result was
the eczema,” says Christine Johnson,
chair of the public health department at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital. “I’m a bit more skeptical about
the asthma findings because asthma
is hard to measure before a child is
five or six years old.” Michelle Berman, mom of three girls under age 7,
says her oldest daughter, who never
used a pacifier, had serious eczema
until age 5. The two younger girls
both used pacifiers and had little
trouble with the allergic condition.
