In Ferraris, an Alfa Giulietta, Porsche 356 Carrera and Jag 120MC. They were part of what was truly the Golden Era of road racing in our area. The book, Long Straights and Hairpin Turns, featured over 500 long-lost photos and personal reminisces from the top drivers of era: Pete Lovely, Ray Rairdon, Tommy Meehan, Dave Tatom and others. Long Straights and Hairpin Turns sold out quickly and has commanded prices of upwards of $150 on the Internet and at car shows. Now Martin Rudow has produced a second edition of the book and added 16 pages with all-new material. Offered as a set with Long Straight’s successor book, Weekends of Glory, the books sell for $140, but are being sold as a boxed set for $100. Cooking On The Car (Reprinted with permission from the FEN Newsletter) Inspired by the book Manifold Destiny, we decided to cook food on the way to the [Fiat Club’s] Grays Harbor Tour on October 6. Following the book’s recipe, we cut the sweet potatoes about onequarter-inch thick, added a little butter, sprinkled them with Hometown #1 Blended Seasoning, and triplewrapped them in foil. At home in Port Townsend, we placed them on our FIAT 124’s exhaust manifold surface as level as possible in the hope that they would cook evenly (they did) and secured the two packages to the manifold. About 50 miles later in Hoodsport, we opened the packages to find perfectly cooked spuds. We were so encouraged that we then tried a couple of steaks. And sure enough, in Lacey, where we were staying for the night, we had two tasty (although slightly overdone) steaks ready for our dinner. We bought some coleslaw, opened some good wine, and had the perfect dinner in our room. Book Review by Bill Wilson of Bold Ride, of the Book: Manifold Destiny (Sounds like a fun Christmas present to me! Editor) Halibut steaks. Egg-on-cheese pie. Stuffed eggplant. Pepper steak with baked potatoes. It all sounds good, doesn’t it? It also sounds like the kind of fare you might only get in a fine restaurant, or perhaps in the home of a master chef.  What would you say if we told you that each of these recipes come from a book about cooking on car engines? That’s right, car engines. Sounds crazy, but it’s true. Manifold Destiny is the title of a work by two rebel chefs named Chris Maynard and Bill Scheller. It tells readers everything they would want to know about the fine art of car engine cookery.  The pair discuss where to place the food packets (each recipe is prepared inside aluminum foil).  They discuss the relative merits of preparing your meal on the exhaust manifold versus cooking it alongside the air filter.  They also cover what parts of the engine you should never use for cooking purposes, like anywhere with external moving parts. This may sound like a joke, but these guys are serious; and they have a long track record of success to back up their claims. They prepared some scrumptious car-cooked dishes for Katie Couric and Al Roker on the Today show.  They also whipped up some shrimp for the mayor of a German town while riding around in his 1956 Cadillac, making the meal directly on the vehicle’s massive engine.  When it comes to finding a use for all that wasted heat automobiles create, these guys have it down to a culinary science. Probably none of this comes as a surprise to veteran truckers, who long ago learned how to heat up cans of stew on their rig’s engines. But Maynard and Scheller have refined the practice by adding their considerable skills as gourmet artisans to the practice.  The result is a delicious read that’s a treat for both the eyes and the stomach. Manifold Destiny is well worth checking out. NWARC November 2014 newsletter page 7 Alfas in Miniature CMC Models 1938 8C2900 B Speciale Touring Coupe This has been a good year for releases of very good miniature Alfa Romeos. Many of the nice ones are in the larger 1:18 scale so they are typically around 9 inches long. Very impressive displays. Here are a couple that are either out or coming out soon. Each of these manufacturers has a web site where you can order, or preorder the cars. Not cheap, but they really look good in your display. BBR 1987 Milano (75) IMSA Turbo and EVO BBR 1990 Alfa SZ (Sprint Zagato), and the RZ (Roadster Zagato) versions. NWARC November 2014 newsletter page 8 Auto e Moto d’Epoca The biggest vintage automotive gathering in Italy each year is the Auto e Moto d’Epoca event in Padua. Padua is a beautiful city, about a fourth the size of Seattle, that sits in mostly flatlands in the Northeast corner of Italy, between Venice and Vicenza. It’s history dates back to being founded in 1183 BC… 3197 years ago. Other than rich history, cool architecture, good climate (much like Western Washington but a click warmer in summer) it draws in over 70,000 visitors for the annual car show and vendor fair. Most of the European manufacturers show cars from their Classiche, or Museum spaces plus a number from other collections are displayed. Of course, this year, as always, Alfa Romeo brought a couple great cars for their display stand; the 1924 P2 Gran Premio, and the 1931 8C2300 Le Mans. The Jano designed P2 was the first Alfa Romeo to have an 8 cylinder engine, and first Alfa Romeo to win a World Title in 1925 with Brilli-Peri. Débuting on the Cremona Circuit in 1924, the P2's victories propelled Alfa Romeos reputation as a manufacturer of fast sporting cars, and served as a prelude to the great successes of the 1930s. Next to the P2 was a freshly restored 8C2300 Le Mans. Using these cars, Alfa Romeo dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans races with overall wins in 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934. At the same time, these cars did amazingly well in the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, and the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hour races. Powered by a supercharged 8 cylinder engine, it generated 155 HP which was about the same or even less than much of the current competition. Combined with the lightweight construction, great handling, good torque, and excellent brakes, they were the cars to beat in their day. Alfa also had a new white Giulietta on display at the booth connecting the past with the present. Car clubs, and vendors from around Europe and especially Italy had cars, products, and services on display. Overall, this is a very worthwhile event if you ever find yourself in Italy in late October. NWARC November 2014 newsletter page 9 Park Place Ltd Hosts NWARC October Meeting Our October meeting serves as the official opening for our club officer elections. With that in mind, our Club Secretary, Gordy Hyde officiated as the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary were opened for nominations. The nominations stay open until our November meeting when we will officially close, and take votes. Each of us can, and should take our turns helping to support the club with our talents and knowledge. If you haven’t served, or volunteered, the nominations are still open… Contact any club officer. In additional to the official business, one of our club founders, Jay Wardle, was there to share a few thoughts including to let us know about his planned Garage Open House he’ll be having in April. We’ll have more details as it gets closer. Each club officer gave a status report on the club, and we welcomed new people. The Gehrings had brought their friend, Conrad, who seemed to enjoy the people and place. Also, Kurt came to the meeting only 2 days after joining the club, and 5 days after buying his first Alfa. Kurt bought the nearly new 1984 Spider we had advertised in the Iniezione. The highlight for many folks was the location, wine, pizza, and our host; Shannon Low. Shannon shared stories of a few of his car adventures, and gave a thorough tour of the vintage, collector, replica, hotrod, and new cars and shops that are part of Park Place Ltd. He led us past the Aston Martin service area where a vintage Aston was being serviced next to a new Vantage. The showrooms were filled with great cars, as usual. People talked until late and finally the parking areas cleared and people headed home… Thanks a ton Shannon and Park Place Ltd! New Year Anti Football Drive Our very popular annual New Year Drive will be held on Saturday, January 3rd giving people a chance to see a little football on New Year’s Day. Our start point will be the same place as before, the Starbucks near Mill Creek exit from I-5 just north of Lynnwood. Our drive takes us on scenic roads up to Skagit County to our host, Fred Schuddekopp at Autostrada in Anacortes. Fred usually has a variety of road and race cars in differing stages of build as well as a few rare cars for us to enjoy. We’ll have a lunch at Fred’s, and then we may also get the chance to visit Ingram Enterprises. This is also an amazing treat as Wes Ingram and Herb Sanborn have a worldwide reputation for being SPICA experts, as well as great engine builders, and overall Alfa car guys. On top of that, they may be the two nicest guys in the Alfa club. I’m not sure, but we can ask them when we see them. Save the date and plan to attend. Member Recommendation!
