MALMAiSON BAR
Coming from Leeds and
previously working in Hotels
the Malmaison and its
facilities have always been
a boutique hotel industry
front runner in our city.
When I was asked to Review
the Bar at the Malmaison
hotel in Leeds as my first
assignment for City Dweller
magazine it was an instant
yes.
I have stayed in a Malmaison
hotel before in Manchester for
work but never sampled the
bar, but before the review even
began I had high hopes as my
previous experience with the
brand was of great standard
with quality service and this time
I wasnвЂ™t disappointed either.
I decided to take my other half
for a Friday night date night
after work around 7.30pm
and we were going to start in
the вЂ�MalbarвЂ™ for a session of
Cocktails.
As we walked in we were
greeted by a rustic carpeted
stairway that guided us down to
the mood lit cocktail bar.
The decor is minimalist but
luxurious, mainly dark with
flashes of colour and brought to
life by the rich wood furnishings.
It took only a few seconds for
us to be greeted by a warm
smiling member of bar staff who
showed us to our table in no
time.

restaurant the atmosphere was
welcoming but with a buzz of
mingling and fun. The outside
of this modest bar hidden under
the hotel seemed quite reserved,
but once through the revolving
door of this imposing building
on the corner of swinegate in
the heart of Leeds the bar came
alive.
The atmosphere had a laid
back vibe but the soundtrack of
contemporary chart music with
a slower tempo set the scene
and leant well to the mixed
crowd of custom of all ages,
dress codes and walks of life.
Although it was obvious
everyone here had come here
to celebrate Friday in style as
the sound of cocktail shakers
and faint laughs from groups
and couples echoed the opulent
Cocktail bar.
My first move was to study the
cocktail menu, it is well laid
out to suit whatever you fancy
a вЂ�MaisonвЂ™ (French themed
cocktails), a вЂ�FizzвЂ™ (Champagne
cocktail) or a вЂ�ClassicвЂ™ Cocktail
amongst many more.
We werenвЂ™t over faced with
an essay of drinks just a short
comprehensive list of great
named and descriptive cocktails.
The Champagne, wines and
beers on offer were also
fantastic in the terms of choice
but tonight was all about the
mixolgy.

champagne saucers.
As we soaked up the
atmosphere, chatting away
and becoming familiar with our
surroundings our first round
was gone and before we knew
it round 4 of cocktails was on
its way.
Swiftly our order was taken,
my other half started with a
вЂ�Valentine RoseвЂ™ and I with
a вЂ�Bad boy good girlвЂ™ for
obvious reasons. The drinks are
surprisingly reasonable price
wise taking into account they
are made with the best quality
of ingredients, easily rivalling
any quality water hole in Leeds.
My first choice was a mix of
Bubble Time Champagne,
Belvedere vodka, fresh lemon,
strawberry & rhubarb cordial,
fresh strawberries, basil leaves.
I like to incorporate at least 2 of
my 5 a day when drinking.
I believe this is testament to
quality cocktails as they were
going down so easily, a great
way to spend a Friday evening
with a group of friends, a loved
one or to simply to slurp the end
of a hard week away.
The service was quick our
drinks were on the table within
minutes, ready for our first
taste we were impressed by

finished the evening with a glass
of champagne. We had missed
dinner as we got caught in the
moment and drank hours away
without realising the time.
This kind of sums up our visit to
the Malmaison bar, the quality of
service, vibe and great cocktails
are all effortlessly executed
which leaves you free to enjoy
your evening and we did just
that.
Perfect for any occasion I have
now got a promise to keep to
my girlfriend to go back and
sample the restaurant as the
food that evening smelt divine.
Something to appeal to all the
Malmaison bar certainly lived up
to my expectations and in doing
so I think I have found a new
local.
I will be back for sure.

Here at Leeds City Magazine weвЂ™re always
on the look-out for new and entertaining
ways to spend weekends in the city
centre, so having caught wind of Hotel
ChocolatвЂ™s School of Chocolate we knew
it was definitely worth a visit. We booked
City Dweller regulars Rachel, Claire and
Paul in for an unforgettable Saturday
morning of The Bean to Bar Experience.
FROM BeAN TO BAR
Located slap bang in the city centre
on Boar Lane we entered Roast and
Conch through the welcoming cafГ© area
which already had a fair few customers
spread out across the booths and tables
(probably trying out one of the legendary
hot chocolates), us on the other hand
were escorted to the chocolate kitchen in
the corner. In true City Dweller spirit we
accepted the complimentary Prosecco on
arrival even though it was only 10am (start
as you mean to go on!), served to us by inhouse Chocolatier Dan, who after 6 months
of intensive training at Hotel Chocolat HQ
was more than qualified to lead us on our
Bean to Bar journey. There were 6 other
participants in our class whose reasons for
partaking ranged from being mad about
chocolate, to a mother and daughter
simply wanting to spend some quality time
together, whatever the reasons for being
there we were all sure of one thing, this
was going to be a very interesting and fun
morning!
Getting straight to the point our lesson
began with the first of many chocolate
samples as Dan taught us to use all our
sense to help us become real chocolate
connoisseurs. Throughout the class we
learnt the origin of the cocoa bean, how
it is sourced, and the revolutionary way in
which Hotel Chocolat has now become the
high quality and unique brand it is today. It
also needs mentioning that the company
really look after their cocoa farmers, from
the Caribbean to Ghana, and how they
pay every farmer in cash within a week,
an ethical and fair way to do business. As
the session went on we tried the cocoa
bean in its purest of forms (the greatest
antioxidant you can have), a variety of
blends of chocolate, and even the cacao
pulp-soursop, a mushy fruit like pulp taken
from the pod of the tree that Claire had
to convince Paul tasted like pear for him
to try, Marmite sprung to mind. Next up
it was time to get physical by making our
own chocolate, we were each presented
with a pestle and mortar and a set of
ingredients then were led on the chocolate
making experience. When I said getting
physical I wasnвЂ™t joking, it was serious hard
work to grind (or conch in professional
chocolatier terms) the beans whilst adding
cocoa butter and sugar. Teachers pet Claire
was top of the class and first to pipe her
chocolate into the moulds, whilst Paul and
I became a little distracted and ended up
wearing half of it on our faces, the results of
our labour were clear in our end products
with ClaireвЂ™s chocolate tasting considerably
smoother than ours!
By the time we had come to the end of our
Bean to Bar experience it was obvious that
the group had truly had a wonderful time,
there was the satisfying feeling of having
made a product whilst learning how to
identify a good chocolate, and the added
bonus of a complimentary gift bag to take
home.
With all the strenuous conching done and
our homemade chocolate setting in the
fridge we decided to head upstairs to the
flagship Roast and Conch restaurant for a
spot of lunch. On entrance our waiter Rob
lead us to one of the tall window booths,
perfect for people watching whilst having
a slight hint of private dining. Rob expertly
took us through the lunch menu and
quickly dampened any concerns of having
some weird concoction such as chocolate
drizzled steaks. As you might expect from
an eatery by Hotel Chocolat the food
is inspired by the cocoa bean and the
Caribbean estates it was originally sourced
from, however what Roast and Conch
state they do is вЂ�return the cocoa bean to
its rightful place as a subtle, savoury spice
and garnishвЂ™, something to which we all
approved was very tastefully done.
On ordering from the set lunch menu all
bases and tastes were covered (including
Paul the pescatarian). To start Claire and I
went for the delicious Crispy Duck confit
potato cake and Paul had the Cocoa Gin
cure salmon, feeling curious I had the

surprised by delicateness of the flavour.
Feeling the need for a hearty dish (and the
need to soak up some of that Prosecco) for

burger, aged cheddar with cacao
beer braised onions, the burger
was cooked medium as requested
and the cheese with the braised
onions gave it a savoury, tangy
edge which is just up my street.
Claire opted for the Mac and
cheese in cacao nib pastry which
she evidently enjoyed, and
Paul had the Avocado, spiced
lime dressing, red onions and
cherry tomatoes which had him
reminiscing of his summer in
Miami, all dishes were impeccably
presented. To accompany our
meal we ordered the own brand
Prosecco that we had already got
a taste for during our class, the
hints of apricot and apple had us
all in agreement that it was one of
the finest Proseccos we had tried.
Having previously over indulged
with chocolate during our lesson
we decided to skip past the
tempting, sinful dessert options
and instead had a round of
skilfully made cocktails to end our
feast, the Mojito is a must.
When eating in one of only two
Hotel Chocolat restaurants in the
county youвЂ™d expect the pay a
little more than the standard high
street chain, however at ВЈ16 for
two, or ВЈ20 for a three course
lunch Roach and Conch is an
affordable and luxurious treat.
If evening dining is more what
youвЂ™re looking for the Al a Carte
menu has an array of options and
the ambience of the restaurant by
night is perfect for all occasions.
To end our Hotel Chocolat
encounter we finished with
a browse around the shop
to purchase some delightful
Christmas gifts with our 10% off
goody bag voucher. By our final
time check we had un-noticeably
spent the majority of the day in
the establishment, from the Bean
to Bar experience to our lunch
in the restaurant we had had the
most enjoyable of days.

another bar quite like it or that
offers as much, hence it being
the one I frequent most often.
Knowing how delicious their
food always is, I was really
looking forward to their Sunday
Roast, which amazingly I had
not yet tried. We arrived and
ordered a drink, with it being
a cold Sunday afternoon we
opted for a warming glass of
red wine whilst we decided
what to eat. The roast options
were Chicken breast or Pork

for. My favourites are the Wild
mushroom, spinach and toasted
walnut loaf and the Goats
cheese and figs in Serrano ham
with beetroot and walnut pesto
but I canвЂ™t eat there without
getting a portion of the Bahara
spiced wings served with tatziki,
and all for a mere ВЈ5 each.

Like their food, there is nothing
ordinary about their cocktail
selection. Feeling a bit lethargic
after my big meal, I opted for a
smooth Espresso Martini whilst

dollop of sweet apple sauce.
I have high standards when it
comes to my roast potatoes,
ones which are not usually met
but these were fluffy on the
inside and crunchy on the out,
just how I like them. The pork
was accompanied by roasted
seasonal veg and balanced with
fresh crunchy greens. Then,
the piece de resistanceвЂ¦ a big
crunchy piece of homemade
pork crackling; the вЂ�meat loversвЂ™
guilty pleasure. I have tended
to make my own roast dinners
because I prefer proper home
cooked ingredients but with
Distrikt thatвЂ™s exactly what
you get; thereвЂ™s not a frozen
Yorkshire pud or powdered
gravy in sight. No more
Sundays slaving away in a hot
kitchen and piles of dishes for
me anymore!

Sunday evening to fill our bellies
whilst having a catch up on the
latest gossip.
Cabana is the brainchild of
Jamie Barber and David Ponte,
two friends with a mutual love
for all things Brasilian. Their
aim for their restaurants is to
give an authentic experience of
communal food mixed with the
eccentricity of the city and the
positive outlook of вЂ�tudo bemвЂ™
meaning everythingвЂ™s good.

knew weвЂ™d found our spot. Once
seated our friendly waitress
gave us a run through of the
menu and was happy to wait
for us to decide on our drinks,
she also pointed us towards
the вЂ�while you waitвЂ™ options so
we had something to snack on
straight away. Being moderately
hungover from our rather large
weekend we were actually
well behaved for a change
and began with a couple of
non-alcoholic Refescos of
Amazonian Iced Teas, think
Mojitos minus the Rum, and a
snack on dish of addictively
good Toasted Corn-nuts.
What I noticed was great about
the Cabana menu is there are
no rules, you can mix it up as
much as you like, order multiple
street food options to share or
go the whole three course hog
which, in our feeling sorry for
ourselves states, is what we did.
To start we both went for the
spicy options of Malagueta
Prawns and Chicken wings.
Now the Malagueta sauce is
CabanaвЂ™s own recipe that can
be drizzled on meat, used to
the grilled Atlanta prawns were
fresh off the barbie.
For mains we stuck with the
BBQ theme and ordered the
skewers, Emma going for the
Chilli Chilli Lamb Lamb and I
had the 8oz Hanger Steak. The
Lamb came accompanied with
Biro-Biro rice but that didnвЂ™t
stop us from going a little OTT
on the sides. The Feijoada
Fries were a dish in their self,
a kind of nacho concoction of
sweet potato fries topped with
melted cheese and beef, pork
and bean Feijoada (Brasilian
for stew), I reckon I could eat
these every day if the waistline
would allow! Emma much
to her delight homed in on
the Homeslaw and a portion
of fries. When ordering the
8oz steak IвЂ™m not sure I really
thought it through, that was
one chunk of juicy meat that
I couldnвЂ™t quite handle, half of
it came home in a doggy box
with me, good job I didnвЂ™t go
for the 12oz. On choosing the
lamb Emma was taking a risk
as sheвЂ™s not normally a fan, but
she was more than happy she
took the waitresses advice, it
was a big hit. Not to scare away
the veggies there are vegetarian
and gluten free options galore,
from crispy cheese pockets to
the Halloumi superfood salad,
thereвЂ™s even a vegan option of
the Feijoada stew.
Although by this point we were
well and truly stuffed we stuck
to our initial three course goal
and ordered a dessert to share.
Having mentioned to a friend I
was popping down to Cabana
earlier in the day she informed
me I could not leave without

entitled us to end our Brasilian
banquet with the homeland
classic cocktail Caipirinhas.
Now Caipirinhas are my all-time
favourite cocktails so IвЂ™m always
on the hunt for a decent one
in Leeds, I raise my glass to
Cabana, their Caipirinhas live
up to my high expectations and
alongside the classic mixture
they also offer Kiwi, strawberry,
and pineapple options to
name a few. For a restaurant
the cocktail menu is pretty
extensive and it is obvious
Cabana takes its drinks as
seriously as its food.
From the start to finish of our
trip to Cabana there was a
buzzing atmosphere, we felt
relaxed and at ease, and every
member of staff that we came
across seemed genuinely happy
to be there. Pair that with the
great food and drinks and itвЂ™s
clear that Cabana has achieved
its mission of bringing a piece
of Brasil to Leeds, Cabana is

business Leeds isnвЂ™t the first
place that springs to mind.
But, International actor, Ashley
Tabatabai discusses how there
may be more happening in the
city then we think. HeвЂ™s had a
base in Leeds since 2006 and
now spends his time between
Los Angeles and the UK. вЂњWhilst
LA clearly is the entertainment
capital of the world, there are
lots of great filmmakers in and
around the cityвЂќ.
And, depending who you talk
to, Leeds could be called as the
birthplace of film. As it is here
where the very first moving
image may have been captured
by Louis Le Prince. Anyone who
has ever walked along Leeds
film excitedly at a mates movie
night, comments included вЂ�вЂ™you
actually bought thatвЂ™вЂ™ and вЂ�вЂ™is this
a jokeвЂ™вЂ™. It was switched off after
20 minutes. If youвЂ™re curious to
see for yourself (youвЂ™re probably
not), then watch the amusing
trailer and leave it at that.

gone burger mad, and letвЂ™s face
it вЂ“ thereвЂ™s too many of these
places now. That said, thereвЂ™s
always room for people that up
the ante with a fresh take on the
done to death snack.
Can anyone remember the last
time a decent Christmas song
was released? If I remember
rightly, the last original song that
is regarded a festive classic was
Stay Another Day by East 17.
That was twenty years ago - how
depressing. x-Factor has helped
kill this tradition off and now all
were left with is a selection of
overly sentimental and insipid
adverts from retail giants and
supermarkets. They donвЂ™t care
whether you have a good
Christmas or not, they want your
money вЂ“ donвЂ™t be fooled.
I paid ВЈ12 for this film on Blu-RayвЂ¦
will I ever learn? Yes, as the name
suggests, itвЂ™s a low budget horror
film about a bunch of beavers
who happen to be blood thirsty
zombies. When I produced the

play the role of Le Prince last
year, working in collaboration

shoes this month and learnt one
of the routines from Dirty Dancing
with the cast from the stage show
down at Leeds Grand Theatre.
It was an absolute dream come
true for me, getting my hands

Leeds food scene in 2014
вЂ“вЂ�burgerвЂ™ and вЂ�street foodвЂ™.
Over the past 12 months
there has been a very
noticeable change in the
way us Leodians are eating
out. plates are out. ItвЂ™s all
about disposable cartons
and red baskets these
days!
Leeds became the epicentre
of street food boom this year.
Brandon Street Market opened
in January, fusing street food,
live art and music in the
brilliant setting of Canal Mills.
The Christmas Market runs
from Friday December 5th to
Friday December 12th. The
British Street Food Awards
also took place in Millennium
Square as part of the British
Street Food SoceityвЂ™s event
вЂ�For The Love Of FoodвЂ™ вЂ“ a very
successful three day event in
the heart of the city.
The city was also invaded
by burgers this year (not
a bad thingвЂ¦)! Getting the
city hooked on medium rare
patties! The fact that Meat
Liquor chose Leeds to launch
their first northern restaurant
shows how far the city has
grown over the past few years!
Overall 2014 has been another
great year for Leeds. There
has been ripple effect from
the investment in Trinity and
the Arena, with a host of new
bars and restaurants opening
up in the city. Plus there was
of course the Tour De France
Grand Depart, which will leave
a legacy on the city for years
to come.
2015 is looking like it will be
equally as good a year! There
are already a number of new
bars and restaurants in the
pipeline, such as Nourish,
which offers a healthy
alternative to fast food.
Cocktails in the city is set to
return and this year it will be
bigger and even better. Plus
the Arena is firmly establishing
itself as a major venue on
the European scene with
Fleetwood Mac coming to the
city in June!
HereвЂ™s to a great 2015! Happy

the smell of mulled wine and
sausages п¬Ѓlls the air, and the
sound of вЂ�OompaaaaвЂ™ echoes
around millennium Square.
Yes, thatвЂ™s right, the German
Christmas Market has returned!
For most of us city dwellers
itвЂ™s the ultimate green light to
start feeling festive! IвЂ™ve had
many memorable nights at the
market, some not so memorable
thoughвЂ¦ that strong German
beer can have quite a lasting
effect! The merriness wonвЂ™t
stop when the market leaves
Millennium Square though, as
the Capital Ice Cube will be back
in January to keep away those
winter blues. I canвЂ™t wait to go
down there with the Capital
team for a skate (or shuп¬„e in my
case) on the ice and a few drinks
after in one of the new bars
around the City.
IвЂ™ve lived in this great city for six
years now, and the buzz keeps
getting bigger and bigger in
terms of bars and restaurants.
This month IвЂ™ve gained two
new вЂ�localsвЂ™ on Merrion Street,
who have taken over the old
Gatecrasher space. First up is
Manahatta, I genuinely think
this is one of the most stunning
places to have opened up
recently. The decor is bang
on and the food and drink are
equally as good, but from the
owners of The Pit and Napa, I
didnвЂ™t really expect anything
less. The second new spot is The
Brotherhood. The best way to
describe this place is like a sports
bar, but not! There are huge
screens and a great selection
of food and cocktails (give the
Bramble a try, itвЂ™s really good).
ItвЂ™s definitely not a вЂ�lads ladsвЂ™
bar, but more the type of place
a bunch of mates can hang out
whilst watching whatever the
sport of the moment isвЂ¦ Both
worth a visit!
If you really want to spoil
someone at Christmas, or just
fancy treating yourself, let
me recommend Oulton Hall. I
had a week off work recently
and treated myself to a stay
there, which consisted of: wine,
cocktails, an amazing dinner,
more wine, a huge bed and a
morning in the glorious spa.
I can honestly tell you, a steam
room, facial and shoulder
massage is good for the soul. IвЂ™d
only been out of the city centre
for about 18 hours, but felt like
IвЂ™d been away for a week. ItвЂ™s
definitely worth a visit, and I
hear the Sunday lunch is pretty
special too!

Autism education trust Gold
Star Award. helen teasdale
who works at St BenedictвЂ™s
catholic primary School in
Garforth was presented with
the award for her outstanding
work in supporting children
with autism.
Helen was nominated for the
award by the STARS team
(Specialists training in Autism
and raising Standards), an
autism outreach team based in
Leeds. Having already received
an AET Silver Star award earlier
in the year. Not only has Helen
improved the lives of the children
on the autism spectrum that she
works with and helped educate
other staff about autism, she
also set up the Jigsaw tree, an
online community for people with
autism as well as a local parent
support group for East Leeds.

business in Leeds this month, four members of the team
also have notable milestones to celebrate.
Diogo Gomez (Catering Manager), Patrick Lennon (Gaming

(Kitchen Assistant) all celebrate the achievement of 10 years
of service at Napoleons.
To mark this milestone & to thank the four staff members

entrepreneur who was told

has won the prestigious
Stelios Award for disabled
entrepreneurs 2014 run by
easyJet founder Sir Stelios
haji-Ioannou and the
charity Leonard cheshire
disability.
Ben Wolfenden received a
ВЈ50,000 cash prize to help
grow his online marketing
business, Visibilis, at a special
awards ceremony in London
recently.
Ben, who has 50 per cent
lung function, suffers from
cystic fibrosis and diabetes.
He started digital marketing
agency Visibilis in 2010 to help
businesses grow online. Despite
undergoing a gruelling regime
of medication and five hours of
physiotherapy every day,
Ben and his team have grown
Visibilis by over 1000% in the
year from 2012 to 2013, with
2014 exceeding expectations.
At the awards Sir Stelios Hajiloannou said, вЂњI have been really
impressed by the growth of
BenвЂ™s business and the way he
is meeting a genuine need in
the market.
вЂњI am passionate about
encouraging entrepreneurship,
and the previous winners of this
award offer proof that there are

again for further

undiscovered talents and
personalities that makes Leeds
the great city we all love!
Q: Where in Leeds are you from?
A: I have lived in many places
in Leeds, Gipton, Belle Isle and
Rothwell which is where I went
to school. I went to Royds School
but got expelled and was sent to
Tinshall Learning Centre until I was
16. Although I got expelled I got on
with my work and was in top set
for everything, I just wasnвЂ™t always
there and didnвЂ™t follow the rules!
Q: What were your aspirations at
school?
A: When I was really young I
wanted to be a spy like James
Bond but as I got older my dream
was to own a nightclub. My
interest for music began at school
which was when I made my first
song. At 16 I found out I was going
to be a dad which obviously at
that age I wasnвЂ™t prepared for, I
didnвЂ™t know what I was going to
do or how I would care for a child
but as soon as my son was born
he stole my heart. From then on
I would do any work to make
money and after leaving school
I did loads of jobs. I worked in a
warehouse 6am вЂ“ 6pm making
pallets, was a butcher, a window
cleaner, brick layer and a milk man
to name a few.
Q: how did you get into the music
scene?
A: When I was at school I recorded
a CD of me MCing over some
baseline, I didnвЂ™t think anything
of it but my friend made a copy.
His friends then made copies and
then unaware to me it was being
sold at Leeds market, it ended up
being the top selling record at the
market at the time. After that I was
approached by a DJ to perform
at his club night called Funkybass
which was held at what was Fudge
Bar. Doing that night at Fudge
gave me a taste for promotion
so I took that up with my friend
Kristian, we ended up taking
Funkybass to loads of clubs all
over the north. We then took over
the promotion of a club called
Casa Loco which we packed out
every weekend. It was off the back

For this monthвЂ™s LeedsвЂ™ Own I caught up with one of the biggest
names in the Leeds club scene to talk music, family and all things
Leeds. At the age of 25 the multi-talented (and not bad looking)
Tom Zanetti has already achieved so much, I met up with him in his
newest restaurant venture to hear his humble story.
of this that I realised I could do it
for myself which is when Insomnia
was created.
Q: What is Insomnia all about?
A: Insomnia began as a club night
that I set up with my girlfriend at
the time who sadly passed away.
It began in a club called Bank in
Wakefield which my mate Ryan
James was running, the night
became popular straight away
and got too big to do alone, at
this point another friend Kane
Towny came on board and we
have run Insomnia together ever
since. Once word got around
Insomnia became really popular
so we then took it to other venues,
Club Mission in Leeds took it on
straight away and it has now been
their biggest night of the month
for the last 5 years, it also won
an award for Leeds Best Night. .
I think another thing that people
like about Insomnia is the acts
that we have had playing for
us, weвЂ™ve had some of the best
people in the business including
Faithless and Basement Jaxx. As
well as the club nights we set
up Insomnifest where weвЂ™d do
mini festivals on bank holidays,
we used to hold one in Hunslet
which was always packed and had
such a great atmosphere, another
festival we run is called Parked
Out. This summer we also ran a
new festival called Made in Leeds
Festival which was the first inner
city festival of its kind, we own
that and run it with some other
partners.
Q: What is Sleepin is cheatin?
A: Due to the success of Insomnia
Kane and I decided to set up a
company to run a range of events
from, we called the company
Sleepin is Cheatin (SIC). We have
a mix of nights now that we take
all over the country, one of which
is called One Religion which has
been hosted by places like Bijoux
in Manchester. As SIC we shared
our music on You Tube and
Sound Cloud and got millions of
hits so we decided to set up our
own record label SIC Records,
this enabled us to sell our music.
We also have our own clothing
range, we have hoodies, t-shirts,
vests and beanies which can all
be bought on our website www.

When youвЂ™re not running Sleepin
is Cheatin do you have any other
side-lines or hobbies?
When I have any time I tend to
focus on making music, writing
songs and putting them to tracks.
At the moment IвЂ™ve been working
on a song with my mate Jack
Walton who was on the x-Factor
this year, we are releasing the track
on Christmas Eve, doing this sort
of music is very different for me
as it is a lot more mainstream than
IвЂ™m used to. I have just got my
own TV show on the new channel
Made in Leeds (freeview channel
8, Virgin 159 and Sky 117) where a
camera crew lived with me for a
week, the show is called The SIC
life with Tom zanetti. That was a
bit weird having a camera crew
with me the whole time but it was
good fun. I recently got asked to
do some modelling for a brand
called Heartbreaker Club which
have shops in London, Bristol and
online, I had never done modelling
before but really enjoyed it and
would be happy to pursue it
further. For hobbies I like to train, I
tend to have a session in the gym
in the morning and then do Thai
boxing on an evening, my son also
does Thai boxing with me.
Q: With such a busy schedule how
do п¬Ѓt being a dad in too?
A: My son Deaconn in my number
one priority and I make sure we
spend as much time together as
possible. He lives with me a lot of
the time and like I said he comes
boxing with me, I also take him
to football training and piano
lessons. DeaconnвЂ™s also done a bit
of modelling with me which was
great to do. With work I can be
getting to bed at 2am some nights
then IвЂ™m up for the school run first
thing in the morning, IвЂ™m lucky
because IвЂ™ve got his Grandma
around to help me out.
Q: your latest venture is the
restaurant La Fuego, can you tell
me how that came about?
A: I recently decided it was time to
invest my money into something,
I own my car but thatвЂ™s about it, I
thought itвЂ™s about time I stopped
blowing money on material things
and make an investment for the
future. My mum used to run a
tapas restaurant in town called
Cuban Heels so setting up a new
tapas restaurant seemed the
perfect thing for us, my partner
Matty Evans and I have put the
money in but my mum will be
running it. Our chef Santos is
Spanish and makes the most
amazing meatballs, all the produce
is from Leeds Market and we
have a great location. It has been
hard work getting it all together
and fitting the place out, at the
moment the restaurant has been
taking up most of my time but
we are excited about opening
on the 29th November and are
hoping our hard work pays off. For
the opening night Jack Walton
is coming down to sing and we
have a great Frank Sinatra act
on. My dream used to be owning
a nightclub but now I feel the
restaurant may be that dream. I
can picture us spending a lot of
family time in there relaxing and
enjoying great food.
Q: What is it about Leeds that has
kept you here?
A: I have grown up in Leeds and it
has been good to me, I feel Leeds
is a place where I can comfortably
express myself. In the Leeds
clubland everyone gets along and
thereвЂ™s so much love for people,
in other cities it all seems a bit
moody. I like to eat out a lot in
Leeds at places like Gaucho, San
Carlo and mine and DeaconnвЂ™s
favourite place Teppanjaki on
Belgrave Street. If IвЂ™m on a rare
night out I like to go to bars such
as Oracle, Fibre and Distrikt or any
down Call Lane. Wherever you go
in Leeds you canвЂ™t really go wrong.

proud to announce their new patron, x Factor star
and local castleford lad Jack Walton.
The charity is unique in the fact that they
support individual children, community groups,
childrenвЂ™s hospices and other childrenвЂ™s charities,
so by supporting Cash for Kids you are actually
supporting hundreds of great causes in the local
region. One of the biggest events they do is Mission
Christmas,last year the appeal delivered gifts to
15,375 local children ensuring that no child wakes
up to nothing on Christmas morning.

overwhelmed to have Jack on board supporting
Cash for Kids especially at such a busy time of his
career this will really help boost our profile which
in turn means we can help more needy children in
West Yorkshire. ItвЂ™s great to have someone from
West Yorkshire supporting a West Yorkshire based
charityвЂќ
This yearвЂ™s Mission Christmas appeal launched on
Monday 17th November. Mission Christmas helps to
make sure no child goes without a gift at Christmas
time and helps the most vulnerable and deprived
children in West Yorkshire. Radio Aire and Magic
828 listenerвЂ™s are being asked to donate gifts for
babies right up to teenagers aged 18 years old.
Cash for kids are encouraging people to buy an
extra Christmas gift that can then be distributed to
needy children at risk of waking up to nothing on
Christmas Day.
The campaign is supported by Crown Point
Shopping Park,Foresters, Ison Harrison,O2 stores,
Leeds Sports Centre and Ringways Motor Group
and is backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
New and unwrapped gifts can be handed in
at collection points in stores at Crown Point
throughout the campaign.
Once collected the gifts are distributed to
youngsters from such places as Martins House
Hospice, Candlelighters, local Childrens Hospitals,
Barnardos, Social Services, Childrens Centres and
many other organisations in the region.
Since auditioning for x Factor last summer, Jack
Walton has had a crazy few months. Jack, whose
an eighteen year old lad from Castleford, wowed
the judges originally with a performance of вЂ�WavesвЂ™
by Mr Probz and went on to reach the live shows.
Despite being harshly eliminated in the fourth
week, heвЂ™s still managed to build up a loyal fan base
(he has over 185 thousand followers on Twitter!)
who are just desperate to follow his budding career.
Jack is also a patron for Radio AireвЂ™s Cash For Kids
Mission Christmas campaign who aim to make sure
no children go without a present this Christmas.
Leeds city magazine caught up with Jack, on
the day of his п¬Ѓrst driving lesson, to talk about
his work for the cash For Kids mission christmas
campaign, his future and more.

world.
вЂњBefore x Factor I worked a lot with
Tom zanneti, whose another local
lad, and weвЂ™re continuing that
now. ItвЂ™s really different and it
shows a new side to Tom as
itвЂ™s more acoustic and IвЂ™m
really excited about it. The
ball is rolling and we wanna
get it released on Christmas
Eve.вЂќ
ItвЂ™s undeniable that JackвЂ™s life has
changed dramatically due to x
Factor. No longer a local lad that
sings a bit round pubs and clubs,
Jack is suddenly keeping up with
his thousands of fans and he loves
it! He was keen to share his advice
to help and encourage anyone
who is in the same position he was
before he auditioned.
вЂњGet yourself out there and just
be yourself. I know everyone says
it and I know itвЂ™s diп¬ѓcult but you
canвЂ™t worry about what people are
gonna say. If youвЂ™re auditioning for
x Factor then just be talkative and
be passionate because thatвЂ™s what
people like; thatвЂ™s what makes good
TV.вЂќ
JackвЂ™s not letting the fame get
to his head, as so many young
people in the spotlight do, and he
continues to stay grounded. He
left our interview to go for his first
driving lesson and he explained, with
a smile, вЂњ IвЂ™m just getting back into
normal lifeвЂќ.

Here we bring to you our pick of вЂ�ONeвЂ™S TO WATCHвЂ™ for 2015 - an exciting list of
young, emerging artists and groups who are ready for the spotlight next year.
released through polydor records, charlotte OcвЂ™s вЂ�StrangeвЂ™ ep was released this
past September to widespread praise.
The title track вЂ�StrangeвЂ™ was produced by Tim Anderson (Solange, Sia) and the video was directed by
Georgia Hudson (MГ�, Klaxons, Swim Deep). The EP is complemented with a second track вЂ�HangoverвЂ™
which was recently added to the prestigious вЂ�BBC Radio 1 IntroducingвЂ™ Playlist. Going further back,
CharlotteвЂ™s EP release in late 2013 received great critical acclaim and a remix of the lead track вЂ�Colour
My HeartвЂ™ became a YouTube smash with over 2 million plays online. Earlier this year Charlotte
performed a string of UK headline tour dates and festivals such as T in the Park, Field Day and Dot to
Dot. Charlotte will release her debut album in 2015.
