The UN telecom agency says there were about 6 billion subscriptions by the end of 2011 – roughly one for 86 of every 100 people. In a report today, the International Telecommunication Union said China alone accounted for 1 billion subscriptions, and India is expected to hit the 1-billion mark this year. The Geneva-based agency says 2.3 billion people – or about one in three of the world’s 7 billion inhabitants – were Internet users by the end of 2011, but there’s a strong disparity between rich and developing countries. ITU says 70% of people who use the Internet live in wealthier, industrialized countries, compared with 24% who live in poorer, developing nations. CHINA’S MO YAN WINS NOBEL FOR LITERATURE STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Chinese writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in literature today, a cause of pride for a government that had disowned the only previous Chinese winner of the award, an exiled critic. National television broke into its newscast to announce the prize – exceptional for the tightly scripted broadcast that usually focuses on the doings of Chinese leaders. The Swedish Academy, which selects the winners of the prestigious award, praised Mo’s “hallucinatory realism” saying it “merges folk tales, history and the contemporary.” Peter Englund, the academy’s permanent secretary, said the academy had contacted Mo, 57, before the announcement. “He said he was overjoyed and scared,” Englund said. Among the works high- lighted by the Nobel judges were Red Sorghum (1993), The Garlic Ballads (1995) and Big Breasts and Wide Hips (2004) “He’s written 11 novels and let’s say a hundred short stories,” Englund said. “If you want to start off to get a sense of how he is writing and also get a sense of the moral core in what he is writing, I would recommend The Garlic Ballads.” TOKYO – Toyota executives were unfazed today by the overnight recall of 7.43 million vehicles over faulty power window switches that can cause fires, calling it a sign the Japanese company had learned from its mistakes and was becoming quicker and more transparent. They said the models affected by the biggest single recall in Toyota Motor Corp.’s 75-year history were all made before global quality controls were beefed up in 2010. The change followed a series of massive recalls, mostly in the U.S., over sticky gas pedals, faulty floor mats and defective braking. “We are not proud of recalls. But there is nothing wrong with recalls per se. Hiding anything would be the problem,” said Shigeru Hayakawa, a senior executive. “We are dealing with problems more expediently.” Associated Press TOYOTA: RECALL SHOWED QUICK ACTION Associated Press STATSCAN: NEW HOUSING INDEX ROSE 0.2% IN AUGUST OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says its new housing price index rose 0.2% in August, after a 0.1% increase in July. The combined metropolitan regions of Toronto and Oshawa, as well as Calgary, were the top contributors to the growth. In Toronto and Oshawa, market conditions were the primary reason for higher prices, while Calgary builders reported that the main factors were increased material and labour costs, as well as market conditions. The largest monthly price advance in August occurred in the metropolitan region of Quebec City, with prices up 0.6%, and in London, Ont., which recorded a 0.5% increase. In both areas the increases were primarily the result of higher material and labour costs. Prices declined 0.4% in Victoria and 0.1% in Charlottetown, while they were unchanged in nine of 21 metropolitan areas surveyed. The Canadian Press WOODS BEATS MACILROY, ADVANCES IN WORLD GOLF FINAL BELEK, Turkey — Tiger Woods beat Rory McIlroy by six strokes today to advance to the semifinals of the World Golf Final, turning the first head-to-head match between the world’s top two players into a one-sided contest. McIlroy, No. 1 in the world, was eliminated from the $5.2-million (U.S.) exhibition after slumping to a third consecutive group match defeat on a day of low scoring at the Antalya Golf Club. Woods shot a seven-under 64 for a second straight victory and was to face Justin Rose in the semifinals. “It felt good and I really hit it good out there,” said Woods, who won just a half-point from four matches in the U.S. team’s loss to Europe in the Ryder Cup last month. “My game is starting to turn around a bit and I am beginning to hit it like I did at the start of the year.” Rose shot a course-record 62 to beat U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson by five strokes and also stay perfect in the event, which has a first prize of $1.5 million. Associated Press THE NEWS THURSDAY NIGHT NEWS IN BRIEF WOMAN DIES AFTER BEAUTY TREATMENT IN HONG KONG HONG KONG — Hong Kong authorities said one woman has died and three others have been hospitalized after a beauty treatment involving blood transfusions. Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority said a 46-year-old woman died yesterday of septic shock after receiving the treatment at a beauty clinic. The treatment is being tested as a method to fight cancer but in this case it was used for cosmetic purposes. The case has raised concerns about potentially risky medical treatments at the city’s numerous clinics offering procedures that claim to enhance a person’s appearance. Health Secretary Ko Wing-man promised today to review regulations governing the clinics and other private medical facilities. Ko said the review would look at putting private clinics that carry out “high-risk medical treatments or procedures under regulatory control.” TURKEY: SYRIAN PLANE CARRIED MILITARY EQUIPMENT ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkish state-run television TRT reported today that a Syrian passenger plane intercepted by Turkey’s air force was carrying military communications equipment, as Damascus branded the incident piracy amid growing tensions between the two countries. Yeni Safak, a newspaper close to the Turkish government, reported there were 10 containers aboard the plane, some containing radio receivers, antennas and “equipment that are thought to be missile parts.” Neither TRT nor the newspaper cited sources for their reports, and Turkish officials have yet to provide details on what was aboard the Syrian Air A320 from Moscow that was forced to land in Ankara yesterday. Associated Press 11.10. 2012 P. 04 MAN PULLED FROM RUBBLE OF MIAMI GARAGE DIES MIAMI – A man who was pulled early today from the rubble of a collapsed parking garage at Miami Dade College has died, police said, bringing the death toll to three. One person was still missing, police said. The man who died this morning at a Miami trauma centre had been trapped for about 13 hours following the collapse of the five-storey structure that was under construction at the west Miami-Dade campus, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Javier Baez. Miami-Dade Police Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said rescue crews were saddened to learn that the man pulled from the rubble had died. They had spent a good part of yesterday communicating with him before he was taken to the hospital early today. Rescue workers found B:8.37” that man after hearing his T:8.37” cries amid the rubble. “It’s saddening because at the end of the day, you know we are recovering a deceased person, not a live person,” she said of the ongoing recovery effort. “But we have to give closure to these families.” Police identified two of the men who died as Jose Calderon and Carlos Hurtado de Mendoza. The man who died at the trauma centre this morning was not yet identified. A news conference with officials from the company contracted to build the garage was planned for 11 a.m. Another man was pulled out alive and brought to a hospital shortly after the collapse, Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Griselle Marino said. A video shot by MiamiDade Fire-Rescue showed four firefighters pulling him out from under a steel beam. He was bloody, and he was S:8.37” carried away on a stretcher. At least seven workers were brought to the hospital with unidentified injuries, while an eighth was treated on the scene and sent home. There were no students in the area because the garage was under construction. The campus was evacuated and closed for the rest of the week. Investigators planned to pick through the rubble to see what caused the garage to crumble. One worker was still unaccounted for, and authorities expected to find at least one more body in the rubble, said Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief David Downey. Downey said it was highly unlikely anyone left in the rubble would still be alive, and that authorities would now focus on recovery rather than rescue. Walter Bieri / Associated Press STROMBO: Paul Shaffer ANCESTRY.COM: BIEBER COUSIN OF GOSLING, LAVIGNE SALT LAKE CITY — Call it the Canadian dynasty of teenybopper pop and movie stardom. Genealogists at the website Ancestry.com say they’ve discovered teen idol Justin Bieber is a distant cousin of movie star Ryan Gosling and singer Avril Lavigne. Their family link dates back to some of Quebec’s earliest settlers 400 years ago, the Utahbased company said today. As if Bieber didn’t have enough superstar genes, Ancestry.com also said he’s a distant relative of singer Celine Dion. “The great thing about family history is that you never know what you’re going to find,” said Michelle Ercanback, a researcher with Ancentry.com. “It was a very pleasant surprise.” Ercanback said researchers begun tracing Bieber’s family lineage about a year ago by paging through teen-idol magazines to find biographical tidbits from the pop star. What they say they found was that Bieber and Gosling are 11th cousins once removed, and Bieber and Lavigne are 12th cousins. They share common relatives Mathurin Roy and Marguerite Bire, the researchers said. Both were born in France in the early 1600s, married in 1637, and moved to Quebec, where Roy worked as a master mason. Avril Lavigne Justin Bieber The genealogists also said Bieber and Dion are 10th cousins three times removed because they’re linked to French couple Jacques Vezina and Marie Boisdon, who were born in the early 1600s. They moved to Quebec, where they died in 1687. Ercanback said she didn’t know if these celebrity links are “sufficient to point to the existence of a superstar gene.” In July, Ancestry.com announced they had found that U.S. President Barack Obama could be the descendent of an African slave, after an examination of his white mother’s family history. Any hard feelings between Taylor, Canada’s one-time ambassador to Iran, and the creative forces behind Argo seemed a thing of the past as Affleck spoke of Taylor’s courage in rescuing six American diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. “What this movie is about is co-operation,” Affleck said. He also paid tribute to diplomats like Taylor who routinely and courageously put their lives on the line to help others. Brennan, who founded Dollar Loan Center, says the centre will teach students how to sing or play guitar, bass, keyboards or drums. Associated Press LOVE IS A CURSE SERIES PREMIERE TONIGHT 9 ENTERTAINMENT THURSDAY NIGHT 11.10. 2012 P. 08 Chuck Zlotnick From left: Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken in a scene from Seven Psychopaths. INTERVIEW: By JESSE SKINNER // toromagazine.com If you’re going to cast a movie called Seven Psychopaths, which opens tomorrow, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell should always make the short-list. Both are friendly guys in real life, but have made their careers playing mentally unbalanced and/ or violent characters. So, perhaps understandably, when we sat with them at TIFF, there was a brief moment of silence before any of the journalists worked up the nerve to ask a question. From there, the conversation touched on their eccentric screen personas, their acting techniques and Walken’s unusual accent. Q. Sam, Roger Ebert called you a latter-day Christopher Walken. Did you take that as a compliment? SAM ROCKWELL: Great quote. CHRISTOPHER WALKEN: I just heard that! SR: It’s a funny thing. I identify with Chris in some ways ... but it’s a great compliment. CW: Sam and I did this movie, but about a year before, we did a play on Broadway, written by (Seven Psychopaths writer/director) Martin McDonagh that went very well. We got to know each other then. SR: We were both child actors. For more, check out toromagazine.com and follow us on twitter@toromagazine Started very young, so there’s a similarity there. We’ve both played bad guys, and some good guys. People have said that we’re quirky or eccentric, but a lot of great actors are – Malkovich, Turturro, Oldman. When I think of Chris, I think more of anti-heroes in movies like The Deer Hunter or The Dead Zone. Dark, but not so eccentric. CW: Your movie persona doesn’t necessarily have to do with anything. It comes from the parts you play. I have this theory about movie actors: whenever you see them, you’re not just seeing the part they’re playing now, but everything they’ve done before comes into the mix. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the person. My life is anything but eccentric. I’ve been married 46 years. I pay all my bills. I live in a house where the lawn is always cut. I’m nice to my cat! ... I’ve been acting since I was five years old. I was raised by musical-comedy people – gypsies. Comics. When you’re raised by those kinds of adults, it’s almost like you’re a foreigner. You become strange, the “other.” And that is seen as menacing or malevolent in movies. Strange is dangerous. I always thought I was a foreign actor. When people do (an impression of me), I always feel like they’re making fun of my accent. SR: Your accent is very particular. You start with a guy who doesn’t use punctuation, he’s got the sense of humour of Jackie Mason, and he does Shakespeare. Mix all those together and you get Chris. Q. How closely do you think Colin Farrell’s character, Marty, matches him? Were there more real-life elements in the movie? SR: Oh yeah, there’s an autobiographical element to the character. CW: I remember when we did the play, I got my upstairs neighbours, where I live in New York, some tickets. After, I asked them what they thought, the woman said, “It had so many layers!” I said to Martin, “My neighbour said your play has layers,” and he said, “No it doesn’t! It is what it is – layers, what are you talking about?” So in the movie, we’re out in the desert, and Sam does a big speech about how he envisions Marty’s screenplay, and I (added), “I like it! It’s got layers!” So that was a rare time when he did (change the script) based on real-life. SR: And when your character says, “I’d make a good pope,” that’s something you said in rehearsal. CW: I’ve always thought I’d make a good pope. I don’t know why they’ve never asked me. Q. Chris, you’ve famously said you’ll take any role you can, but it seems like you’re drawn to movies with great monologues. CW: Certain writers – Martin, Quentin Tarantino – write great monologues. But not a lot of screenwriters try it. SR: It’s very theatrical. Not a lot of monologues in film. Q. Sam, you’ve played both good guys and bad guys. Where do you think your characters, Billy and Hans, fit into that spectrum? SR: A bit of both, sure. We’re not bad guys – it’s a comedy! CW: The violence is kind of Wile E. Coyote versus Road Runner violence – cartoon-y. Q. How did you prepare for your parts? CW: I just learned my lines. That’s all I ever do. I’ve never known good actors to talk about character motivations. Actors all talk about the same things. SR: Girls and food ... There is a technique to acting, but it’s like talking about architecture. CW: It’s a bit like playing in the sand, making stuff up. A good director is like a lifeguard, sitting in his high chair watching these crazy kids. Every once in a while one of them will, you know, slip or fall out of bounds. A good director picks them up and puts them back in. GOSSIP THURSDAY NIGHT 11.10. 2012 P. 09 LAS VEGAS MADE $23M FROM HARRY SCANDAL NICKS APOLOGIZES FOR THREATENING MINAJ Stevie Nicks has apologized for threatening to kill Nicki Minaj. The Fleetwood Mac singer issued the shocking unprovoked verbal attack in response to the rapper’s recent dust-up with her fellow American Idol judge, Mariah Carey. “If I had been Mariah I would have walked over to Nicki and strangled her to death right there,” Nicks told The Daily. “I would have killed her in front of all those people.” Nicks told gossip website Just Jared, “I want to apologize for my remarks about Nicki Minaj’s behaviour toward Mariah Carey which I said during a long and exhausting day of interviews. “It was very out of character for me, and I deeply regret what I said. “I feel very protective toward Mariah Carey who has gone through many difficulties in her life, and I spoke without thinking. I think all artists should be respectful toward one another and that includes me. I am truly sorry.” Pictures of Prince Harry’s naked scandal were seen by 154 million people, and gave Las Vegas $23 million (U.S.) worth of free publicity. The 28-year-old royal caused controversy when nude photographs of him playing strip pool with a bevy of beauties were published online in August, but according to a new report issued by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the incident has given the city a major tourism boost as the images were seen by an estimated 154 million people. LVCVA Board Chairman Tom Collins told a recent board meeting, “God bless Prince Harry. He made us a bunch of money,” according to gossip site TMZ. The agency is reportedly unsure of exactly how much the scandal boosted profits, but officials say there is no doubt that the scandal had a positive effect on their economy. Prince Harry is currently in Afghanistan after being deployed for a four-month stint. RIHANNA WANTS TO TIE THE KNOT WITH BROWN MELROSE’ ACTRESS DESCRIBED AS WASTED Rihanna is reportedly talking about marrying Chris Brown. The 24-year-old singer is said have told friends she wants to marry the newly single R&B singer, whom she recently reunited with after splitting shortly before he was convicted of assaulting her in 2009. A source close to the songstress told Star magazine, “No one close to them would be a bit shocked if they suddenly eloped. Rihanna has told her close friends point blank – I would marry Chris.’ “She even says she would have never left him if the media scrutiny didn’t get so bad. They’re passionate, and when they’re drunk, they’ve both made many comments about getting married.” News that the couple could be set to exchange vows follows reports that Brown has given his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran a generous payout following their split last week. SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Testimony continues at the aggravated manslaughter trial of a Melrose Place actress accused of killing a New Jersey woman in a 2010 motor vehicle accident. Jurors yesterday heard from a woman who followed Amy LocaneBovenizer for over six kilometres after she said the actress had rearended her minivan in a minor fender-bender. Maureen Ruckelshaus said the actress appeared wasted and drove off before police could be called. However, the defence tried to show that Ruckelshaus may have contributed to the deadly crash in Somerset County. Ruckelshaus followed Locane-Bovenizer, flashing her lights and honking her horn. Ruckelshaus watched as the LocaneBovenizer’s SUV struck a car pulling into a driveway, killing the woman. The once-superstar running back has become a shell of his former self since signing a mega-deal with the Titans last off-season. CJ2K was once considered the next big running back star in the NFL, but whether it’s a lack of effort or lack of holes generated from his offensive line, he’s now known as CJ401K. Johnson has averaged less than 2.1 yards per carry in four of his five starts this season, and has only eclipsed more than 25 yards in one game. He’s yet to score a touchdown and break a run longer than 20 yards. Generally running backs decline statistically after they receive big pay days but we haven’t seen many drop-offs like this, outside of Shaun Alexander in Seattle. Titans head coach Mike Munchak was an offensive lineman during his playing career and places a high emphasis on running the football, something that makes Johnson’s poor play even more bamboozling. Unfortunately, the Titans don’t have many legitimate internal options, but you can’t pay premium dollars for a running back to average less than three yards per carry. The highest-paid player on the Titans, Johnson receives a base salary of $8 million (U.S.) in 2012. He needs to get back to his level of production or Tennessee needs to move in a different direction. If Johnson doesn’t start to turn it around against the Pittsburgh Steelers today, he could find himself on the bench. @realjeffsimmons FARWELL’S 411 MIKE FARWELL IS THE MORNING SPORTSCASTER ON RODRIGUEZ NOW A LIGHTNING ROD FOR CONTROVERSY The big question in New York today is whether or not Alex Rodriguez should be in the Yankees’ starting lineup tonight against Baltimore. The question arises after Raul Ibanez hit a game-tying and then game-winning home run last night while pinch hitting for Rodriguez. There should be no debate. Lefty Joe Saunders starts for the Orioles tonight, and that’s simply not a good matchup for Ibanez. And how can you ignore Rodriguez’s 647 career home runs? You can’t. WOES IN WASHINGTON The team with the best regular season record in baseball is on the brink of elimination. St. Louis has Washington on the ropes, and the cracks are showing. One player suggested that the Nats would be up 2-0 in the series if they had Stephen Strasburg. The ace was famously shut down for the season in September. If the Nationals get bounced in the first round, cue the questions in Washington. And deservedly so. @farwell590 RUSSELL MARTIN: THE CANADIAN MAJOR LEAGUER WE DON’T TALK ABOUT GREG BRADY OF BRADY & LANG TUNE IN TO BRADY & LANG WEEKDAY MORNINGS 5:30-9 ON Lots of variables in the mix for today’s and tonight’s MLB playoff affairs. But what hasn’t been documented is the idea of two key Canadian starters meeting in the World Series. Sure, we all know about Toronto native Joey Votto. The Reds first baseman is a superstar in Cincinnati. He faces a critical game today to decide whether the Reds season is done, or whether they advance to the NLCS. Though we’ve had Canadians in the World Series before, they’ve mostly been in limited roles.Votto could change that, but so could East York native Russell Martin. Martin has been the starting catcher of the New York Yankees for the last two seasons, and he isn’t discussed often. He spent his first five seasons with the L.A. Dodgers, and maybe without frequent visits to Rogers Centre to battle the Jays, he slipped under the local radar. Maybe it was going to a small U.S. college, or that he doesn’t get a lot of publicity on a team with C.C. Sabathia, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Either way, Martin has played great defence in this series, chipped in a home run, and doubled in the third last night, scoring the Yankees’ only run until the Ibanez magic. The Yankees face a close-out game tonight at home, and if they winm they’d get a day off before the ALCS – if not, they’ll play a Game 5 tomorrow. @bradyfan590 HORSE RACING THURSDAY NIGHT 11.10 . 2012 P. 11 LOOKING FORWARD TO PATTISON AT WOODBINE The Pattison Canadian International is running at Woodbine Racetrack on Sunday, so here are some images to get you in the spirit for the Sport of Kings. RICHARDS, BLOGTO FLICKR POOL The best burgers in Toronto start with the essentials: a fresh, quality beef patty and a soft bun. But from there, the possibilities are endless. Fried eggs, an almost criminal amount of bacon, a smorgasbord of cheeses – these burger joints go above and beyond the call of duty to bring you more than just a sad sprig of lettuce and squirt of ketchup. Just remember to bring your appetite – and a napkin. Here is the list of the best burgers in Toronto. 1 BURGER’S PRIEST 2 HOLY CHUCK BURGERS 3 STOCKYARD’S SMOKEHOUSE 1636 QUEEN ST. E. (+ 1 OTHER LOCATION) 1450 YONGE ST. 699 ST. CLAIR AVE. W. Burger’s Priest makes what you might call “holy” burgers at both of its downtown locations. Their double cheeseburger ($7.99) is a thing of simple, straightforward beauty, with its two patties and two slices of cheese, and you can also make it a “What’s Right” combo ($14.99) and add chili cheese fries, a cookie and a drink to the mix. Then there’s the mystery of the secret menu, which you’ll be able to view if you “like” the burger spot on Facebook. It includes The Pope ($12.59), which has two patties, plus “The Option” – cheese between two deepfried portobello mushrooms – crowded on to one bun. It’s fitting that Yonge and St. Clair’s Holy Chuck is so close to the top of this list: their emphasis is on the highest quality freshly ground beef, and we all know that’s the foundation of any good burger. Their signature ($9.99) is a double cheeseburger with bacon and caramelized onions, and comes with a plea not to add any further fanciness, and there’s the Raging Bull ($12.99), which sees the addition of homemade chipotle sauce and hot peppers. You also have the usual suspects, like fries and pop, but for an added bit of intrigue, try their foie-gras poutine ($25), or any of their specialty shakes. You may love Stockyards for their buttermilk marinated deep-fried chicken or their spectacular barbecue brisket sandwich, but their griddle smashed burgers are nothing to scoff at. The classic iteration starts at $7 and comes with pickles, tomatoes and the other regulars, but once you find yourself in their rustic wood dining room, you should almost definitely splurge on the Double ($14) – two patties with caramelized onions, arugula and aged cheddar. All sides are $5, and include fresh-cut french fries, coleslaw or sauteed greens. 4 BIG SMOKE BURGER 5 BURGER SHOPPE / BQM 6 DANGEROUS DAN’S 220 YONGE ST. (+ MANY MORE LOCATIONS) 688 QUEEN ST. E. (+ 2 OTHER LOCATIONS) 714 QUEEN ST. E. Big Smoke Burger has several locations across Toronto slinging Ontario AAA patties. The prices vary by location, but generally stay within the range outlined below. You’d be amiss not to give the Crazy Burger (jalapeno havarti, coleslaw and chipotle mayo, $6.99) a try, and take advantage of the option to customize any sandwich with lamb, veggie or chicken patties. The sides are standard, the add-ons include gorgonzola and sautéed mushrooms, and the old-fashioned shakes come in three basic flavours, but are a nice way to ease into the fall weather. BQM/Burger Shoppe’s patties are a little on the small side, but the meat is locally sourced and hormonefree, and at BQM locations you can select your cut (chuck, brisket or sirloin). The Natural, a simple mix of red onions, pickles and garlic aioli, will run you $9 for chuck, $11 for brisket and $13 for sirloin, with small fries costing you another $3. You’ll also find a trio of blue-cheese-topped sliders, as well as meatless and tofu burgers, and some pub-worthy apps and sides. Dangerous Dan’s is best suited for true burger enthusiasts. The rugged Riverside exterior and no-nonsense diner-style innards are a fitting intro to the serious burgers you can expect. It starts with an eight-ounce patty ($4.79 for a plain), and goes to a Big Pig (four slices of bacon, peameal, cheddar and mayo, $6.99); or you can go off-book and top it with feta cheese (95 cents), or a four-ounce pan-fried lobster tail ($14.95). The sides range from fries and poutine, to deep-fried pierogies ($4.65 for seven pieces). 7 WOODY’S BURGERS 8 BURGER STOMPER 9 STAMPEDE BISON GRILL 3795 LAKE SHORE BLVD. W. 364 DANFORTH AVE. 5 BROCK AVE. It’s worth the trip to Etobicoke for Woody’s sevenounce patties made from locally sourced, naturally raised, hardwood-grilled beef – as well as bison and turkey. Their beef classic starts at a very reasonable $5.95, with free condiments – such as grilled peppers or sautéed mushrooms and onions – and add-ons such as gorgonzola, pulled pork and fried eggs (all $1). Or you can spring for tried and true specialties, such as the Tokyo burger ($5.95), which is topped with pickled ginger, wasabi mayo and sautéed onions. Burger Stomper is a petite but sleek space on the Danforth, where the six-ounce patties are ground fresh daily, and the meat is never frozen AAA Ontario beef. That’s what you’ll get on their Classic Stomp ($5.75), with basic toppings of lettuce, tomato and ketchup, plus cheddar for an extra $1. For more gourmet palates, try their Swiss Mushroom Melt ($7.25), with mushrooms, swiss cheese and their secret mayo, and don’t forget a side of double-fried fries ($3.50) or one of their milkshakes ($4 for a small). Don’t let the name fool you: bison is nowhere to be found on Stampede’s menu. The beef patty at this Parkdale fixture ($4.75) is a decent size and comes dressed with your choice of standard fixings, but you can also add gourmet toppings such as bacon, avocado, goat cheese or roasted peppers for a slightly more unusual taste ($1.25). You can enjoy the burger on their covered patio, to go, or inside their eclectically decorated space (complete with framed X-rays). # # . # #.22012 012 | THURSDAY XXX NIGHT | 11.10. YEAR TO DATE (-)43.43% Profit from sentiment indicators [email protected] Investor sentiment can be a powerful contrarian indicator of the market’s future direction, particularly when bullish or bearish attitudes become extreme, but it can lose some of its predictive powers when investor views are more complacent, say analysts. Two of the more popular sentiment readings south of the border are provided by American Association of Individual Investors and Market Vane Corp. The weekly AAII Investor Sentiment Survey measures the percentage of individual investors who are bullish, bearish and neutral about the stock market for the next six months. (GOOGLE FINANCE) NOVAGOLD RESOURCES INC. (NG) — TSX Wendy’s / Associated Press By DAVID PETT U.S. consumer sentiment survey to be released at 9:55 a.m. TOMORROW WENDY GETS A MAKEOVER Among the investors polled last week, 33.9% said they were bullish on the market, 32.9% were neutral and 33.2% were bearish. Longer-term averages, by comparison, are 39%, 31% and 30%, respectively. The percentage of investors who are neutral on markets grew by 5.5 points from the previous week, while bullish and bearish readings dropped, suggesting investors are more complacent about stocks following the summer rally. Market Vane’s Bullish Consensus indicator, meanwhile, measures the futures market sentiment each day by following the trading recommendations of leading commodity traders. High bullish readings are usually a sign of market tops while low ones often signal market bottoms. Last week, the Market Vane reading hit 67%, well above its historical average of 50.90. Tobias Levkovich, a U.S. equity strategist at Citigroup Global Markets, said data from Market Vane suggests stock prices might be looking at a near-term peak, but most other sentiment readings, including AAII, show a different story. “There are times when sentiment is a superb indicator and times when it is not,” he said. “Thus, tracking sentiment has its advantages, but sometimes it sends a muddled signal as is the case currently.” CURRENT PRICE $4.91 P/E N/A IMPORTS, EXPORTS FALL IN AUGUST: STATSCAN OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says both imports and exports fell in August, narrowing the trade deficit with the world to $1.3 billion from $2.5 billion in July. The agency says merchandise imports fell 3.1% to $38.8 billion, with declines in every sector except energy products. Exports edged down 0.1% in August to $37.5 billion as exports of industrial goods and materials slipped and exports of energy products increased after six consecutive monthly declines. Imports from the United States fell 4.3% to $24.2 billion and exports rose 1.4% to $27.6 billion, raising the trade surplus with the U.S. to $3.5 billion from $2 billion in July. Exports to countries other than the United States fell 3.9% to $9.8 billion, while imports declined 1% to $14.6 billion. B.C. ’concerned’ about answers coming out of pipeline hearings PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Final hearings into the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project will resume today, but so far, the province is not impressed. B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake issued a statement after the hearings ended yesterday, saying his government is “extremely concerned” about the answers it’s getting from Enbridge. Lake says the responses provided by company experts to questions from B.C. government lawyers have been incomplete or lacking in commitment. He says the first two days of hearings showed Enbridge has not committed to new technology that could detect very small leaks or an automatic shut-down mechanism in the case of a possible leak, opting instead for manual shutdown. I closely watched her eyes that day to see if I could detect any hurt or sadness, or perhaps even relief or satisfaction, but I couldn’t make a determination and felt bad for her regardless. The Claddagh Ring Girl always offers me a smile that sometimes seems a little forced, especially Monday mornings, but today it seems quite genuine.
