Mix salt, sugar, fennel fronds and lemon zest in a bowl. Place a piece of plastic wrap that is three times the width of the salmon fillet on a work surface. Spread half the cure across plastic evenly. Place the salmon, skin side down on the cure. Cover exposed flesh with the rest of the cure, pressing down firmly. Toss fennel slices, fennel seeds and pepper in a bowl. Sprinkle evenly across the top of the fish. Wrap the fish tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for two days. When it’s ready, rinse the fish with cold water to remove excess salt. Pat salmon dry, de-skin and slice each side into ¼-inch slices. Police say the victim was found without vital signs shortly after midnight on the 11th floor of an apartment building near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West. They say his back was wounded. Police are looking for a man described as black, roughly 6-foot-1, who was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. PEANUT BUTTER ITEMS RECALLED ON SALMONELLA FEARS OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat some products containing peanut butter because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The products under the brand names Harry & David, Wolferman’s, Fairytale and Justin’s may have been sold across Canada through Internet sales from the U.S. The products range from flavoured peanut butter spreads to gift baskets. The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses linked to eating these products. CHINA’S MO YAN WINS NOBEL FOR LITERATURE STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Chinese writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in literature today, a cause of pride for a government that had disowned the only previous Chinese winner of the award, an exiled critic. National television broke into its newscast to announce the prize – exceptional for the tightly scripted broadcast that usually focuses on the doings of Chinese leaders. The Swedish Academy, which selects the winners of the prestigious award, praised Mo’s “hallucinatory realism” saying it “merges folk tales, history and the contemporary.” Peter Englund, the academy’s permanent secretary, said the academy had contacted Mo, 57, before the announcement. “He said he was overjoyed and scared,” Englund said. They said the models affected by the biggest single recall in Toyota Motor Corp.’s 75-year history were all made before global quality controls were beefed up in 2010. Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority said a 46-year-old woman died yesterday of septic shock after receiving the treatment at a beauty clinic. The treatment is being tested as a method to fight cancer but in this case it was used for cosmetic purposes. The case has raised concerns about potentially risky medical treatments at the city’s numerous clinics offering procedures that claim to enhance a person’s appearance. Health Secretary Ko Wing-man promised today to review regulations governing the clinics and other private medical facilities. Ko said the review would look at putting private clinics that carry out “high-risk medical treatments or procedures under regulatory control.” TURKEY: SYRIAN PLANE CARRIED MILITARY EQUIPMENT ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkish state-run television TRT reported today that a Syrian passenger plane intercepted by Turkey’s air force was carrying military communications equipment, as Damascus branded the incident piracy amid growing tensions between the two countries. Associated Press 11.10. 2012 P. 04 MAN PULLED FROM RUBBLE OF MIAMI GARAGE DIES MIAMI – A man who was pulled early today from the rubble of a collapsed parking garage at Miami Dade College has died, police said, bringing the death toll to three. One person was still missing, police said. The man who died this morning at a Miami trauma centre had been trapped for about 13 hours following the collapse of the five-storey structure that was under construction at the west Miami-Dade campus, said Miami-Dade police spokesman Javier Baez. Miami-Dade Police Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said rescue crews were saddened to learn that the man pulled from the rubble had died. They had spent a good part of yesterday communicating with him before he was taken to the hospital early today. Rescue workers found B:8.37” that man after hearing his T:8.37” cries amid the rubble. “It’s saddening because at the end of the day, you know we are recovering a deceased person, not a live person,” she said of the ongoing recovery effort. “But we have to give closure to these families.” Police identified two of the men who died as Jose Calderon and Carlos Hurtado de Mendoza. The man who died at the trauma centre this morning was not yet identified. A news conference with officials from the company contracted to build the garage was planned for 11 a.m. Another man was pulled out alive and brought to a hospital shortly after the collapse, Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Griselle Marino said. A video shot by MiamiDade Fire-Rescue showed four firefighters pulling him out from under a steel beam. He was bloody, and he was S:8.37” carried away on a stretcher. At least seven workers were brought to the hospital with unidentified injuries, while an eighth was treated on the scene and sent home. There were no students in the area because the garage was under construction. The campus was evacuated and closed for the rest of the week. Investigators planned to pick through the rubble to see what caused the garage to crumble. One worker was still unaccounted for, and authorities expected to find at least one more body in the rubble, said Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief David Downey. Genealogists at the website Ancestry.com say they’ve discovered teen idol Justin Bieber is a distant cousin of movie star Ryan Gosling and singer Avril Lavigne. Their family link dates back to some of Quebec’s earliest settlers 400 years ago, the Utahbased company said today. As if Bieber didn’t have enough superstar genes, Ancestry.com also said he’s a distant relative of singer Celine Dion. “The great thing about family history is that you never know what you’re going to find,” said Michelle Ercanback, a researcher with Ancentry.com. “It was a very pleasant surprise.” Ercanback said researchers begun tracing Bieber’s family lineage about a year ago by paging through teen-idol magazines to find biographical tidbits from the pop star. What they say they found was that Bieber and Gosling are 11th cousins once removed, and Bieber and Lavigne are 12th cousins. They share common relatives Mathurin Roy and Marguerite Bire, the researchers said. Both were born in France in the early 1600s, married in 1637, and moved to Quebec, where Roy worked as a master mason. INTERVIEW: By JESSE SKINNER // toromagazine.com If you’re going to cast a movie called Seven Psychopaths, which opens tomorrow, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell should always make the short-list. Both are friendly guys in real life, but have made their careers playing mentally unbalanced and/ or violent characters. So, perhaps understandably, when we sat with them at TIFF, there was a brief moment of silence before any of the journalists worked up the nerve to ask a question. From there, the conversation touched on their eccentric screen personas, their acting techniques and Walken’s unusual accent. Q. Sam, Roger Ebert called you a latter-day Christopher Walken. Did you take that as a compliment? SAM ROCKWELL: Great quote. CHRISTOPHER WALKEN: I just heard that! SR: It’s a funny thing. I identify with Chris in some ways ... but it’s a great compliment. CW: Sam and I did this movie, but about a year before, we did a play on Broadway, written by (Seven Psychopaths writer/director) Martin McDonagh that went very well. We got to know each other then. We’ve both played bad guys, and some good guys. People have said that we’re quirky or eccentric, but a lot of great actors are – Malkovich, Turturro, Oldman. When I think of Chris, I think more of anti-heroes in movies like The Deer Hunter or The Dead Zone. Dark, but not so eccentric. CW: Your movie persona doesn’t necessarily have to do with anything. It comes from the parts you play. I have this theory about movie actors: whenever you see them, you’re not just seeing the part they’re playing now, but everything they’ve done before comes into the mix. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the person. My life is anything but eccentric. I’ve been married 46 years. I pay all my bills. I live in a house where the lawn is always cut. I’m nice to my cat! ... I’ve been acting since I was five years old. I was raised by musical-comedy people – gypsies. Comics. When you’re raised by those kinds of adults, it’s almost like you’re a foreigner. You become strange, the “other.” And that is seen as menacing or malevolent in movies. Strange is dangerous. I always thought I was a foreign actor. When people do (an impression of me), I always feel like they’re making fun of my accent. SR: Your accent is very particular. You start with a guy who doesn’t use punctuation, he’s got the sense of humour of Jackie Mason, and he does Shakespeare. Mix all those together and you get Chris. Q. How closely do you think Colin Farrell’s character, Marty, matches him? Were there more real-life elements in the movie? SR: Oh yeah, there’s an autobiographical element to the character. CW: I remember when we did the play, I got my upstairs neighbours, where I live in New York, some tickets. After, I asked them what they thought, the woman said, “It had so many layers!” I said to Martin, “My neighbour said your play has layers,” and he said, “No it doesn’t! It is what it is – layers, what are you talking about?” So in the movie, we’re out in the desert, and Sam does a big speech about how he envisions Marty’s screenplay, and I (added), “I like it! It’s got layers!” So that was a rare time when he did (change the script) based on real-life. SR: And when your character says, “I’d make a good pope,” that’s something you said in rehearsal. CW: I’ve always thought I’d make a good pope. I don’t know why they’ve never asked me. Q. The once-superstar running back has become a shell of his former self since signing a mega-deal with the Titans last off-season. Johnson has averaged less than 2.1 yards per carry in four of his five starts this season, and has only eclipsed more than 25 yards in one game. He’s yet to score a touchdown and break a run longer than 20 yards. Generally running backs decline statistically after they receive big pay days but we haven’t seen many drop-offs like this, outside of Shaun Alexander in Seattle. Titans head coach Mike Munchak was an offensive lineman during his playing career and places a high emphasis on running the football, something that makes Johnson’s poor play even more bamboozling. Unfortunately, the Titans don’t have many legitimate internal options, but you can’t pay premium dollars for a running back to average less than three yards per carry. The highest-paid player on the Titans, Johnson receives a base salary of $8 million (U.S.) in 2012. He needs to get back to his level of production or Tennessee needs to move in a different direction.
