Babinda Police December Newsletter I hope that everyone enjoyed time with family and friends over the Christmas period. Unfortunately six drink drivers were caught on our roads, if you are going to drink alcohol, don’t drive -it is simple. We had two crashes within our area this month, luckily both were relatively minor. The majority of crashes are caused by driver error, either through speed, inattention (including mobile phones) drink or drug driving or fatigue. If we pay attention whilst driving or anticipate what other road users may do, we could probably avoid over 90% of crashes. We catch people speeding every day. The message that speed kills is just not getting through. Manage your time, leave earlier to prevent rushing, watch your speed, use cruise control if you have it. Think about the lives of those who would be affected if you or someone else were seriously injured or killed, just to get somewhere five minutes quicker. Stop signs mean you must stop on or before the line. If you do not stop at stop signs and get caught, you could face a fine of $341 and 3 points. Stop does not mean slow down, look and go. You must come to a full and complete stop before proceeding through the junction. Please bear this in mind as we will continue to monitor this. We continue to see far too much domestic violence in our community. Consider the impact this has on children in the household. THE DANGERS OF PARADISE Christmas day we had a lady cut her mouth and ear as well as busting up her knee at Josephine Falls – fortunately she was not too badly hurt. Also there was a person fall off the falls on New Years Eve during the day who sounded like they would be in a really bad way but fortunately only had some moderate injuries not life threatening. Not to be outdone the Boulders had a nasty accident in the last fortnight where a student got some nasty lacerations and could have been much worse. The important message is to be safe this holidays. Accidents happen at the most unexpected times. If you or your family are at the beach, the creeks or on the roads take it easy and play it safe. Another thing to remember in this extreme heat is to keep your water levels up. Keep an eye on elderly neighbours or family as they often don’t drink enough fluids and can become dehydrated quite quickly. Until next time, Keep safe Justin Cairns OIC Babinda 4 Lamb forequarters with garlic crushed potatoes They Say… Ingredients: It is not necessary to believe in God to be a good person. In a way, the traditional notion of God is outdated. One can be spiritual but not religious. It is not necessary to go to church and give money – for many, nature can be a church. Some of the best people in history did not believe in God, while some of the worst deeds were done in His name. 4 lamb forequarters 150 ml soy sauce 100 ml sweet chilli sauce 100 ml sprite 2 tablespoons garlic 3 medium potatoes 1 tablespoon butter Pope Francis 50 ml of cream Things to Help Lift Your Mood: Sunlight & Exercise Eat Spicy Food Pat a Puppy Perform a Random Act of Kindness Smile Smile Smile Just Joking... For myself, personally, the highlight of my year has been the friends I have made within this community – such beautiful people! … and I thankyou … and for Mark, his highlight has been coming home from the Pilbara each month, to a list a mile long !! haha – and to the breathtaking ocean views and peacefulness we experience every day – Bramston Beach has won our hearts. Next year in our season, we will be having a Sunday Session’, with live music, BBQ, fundraising etc – fun day for all the family, a chance to bring the community together… love to hear any other suggestions with regards to Menu, Activities, Anything! – email me to [email protected] We wish Everyone a very Happy and Healthy 2015 Deb & Mark x 8 We Are Survivors For those born before 1940 We were born before television, before penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, videos and the pill. We were before radar, credit cards, split atoms, laser beams and ballpoint pens, before dish-washers, tumble driers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip-dry clothes…and before man walked on the moon. We got married first and then lived together (how quaint can you be?). We thought fast-food’ was what you ate in Lent, a Big Mac’ was an oversized raincoat and crumpet’ we had for tea. We existed before house husbands, computer dating and sheltered accommodation’ was where you waited for a bus. We were before day care centres, group homes and disposable nappies. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, artificial hearts, word processors, or young men wearing earrings. For us time sharing’ meant togetherness, a chip’ was a piece of wood or fried potato, hardware’ meant nuts and bolts and software’ wasn’t a word. Before 1940, made in Japan’ meant junk, the term making out’ referred to how you did in your exams, stud’ was something that fastened a collar to a shirt and going all the way’ meant staying on a double-decker bus to the terminus. In our day, cigarette smoking was fashionable’, grass’ was mown, coke’ was kept in the coalhouse, a joint’ was a piece of meat you ate on Sundays and pot’ was something you cooked in. Rock Music’ was a fond mother’s lullaby, Eldorado’ was a ice-cream, a gay person’ was the life and soul of the party, while aids’ just meant beauty treatment or help for someone in trouble. We who were born before 1940 must be a hardy bunch when you think of the way in which the world has changed and the adjustments we have had to make. No wonder there is a generation gap today…BUT…By the grace of God …we have survived!! Potato and leak gratin Ingredients: 4 medium potatoes 1 leak 500ml of thickened cream 1 egg 1 teaspoon of crushed garlic 200 g of diced bacon 150 g of grated cheddar cheese Method: Preheat oven at 180 degrees. Instead of using chemical sprays, make your own aerosols or place blends into your diffusers and oil burners. Create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that will make it your best ever. Here’s a selection of traditional aromas, I’ve chosen specifically because they all smell great individually, and blend well together to create truly aromatic season of goodwill! ESSENTIAL OILSPine- Sometimes an artificial tree is preferable to avoid getting all those prickly pine needles everywhere. To give life to your tree and to give an uplifting feel in the room place a few drops of pine and grapefruit essential on cotton-wool balls and hide them inside the tree this will really lift the spirits of everyone in the room. Cinnamon- If you’re struggling to concentrate on that long list of jobs you still have to do, diffusing cinnamon essential oil helps to focus the mind and strengthen your resolve. Also great for boosting flagging energy levels especially after all that Xmas shopping! Frankincense -Frankincense is the perfect essential oil for the Christmas celebrations. It is a wonderfully relaxing oil and perfect for keeping you chilled during the hectic celebrations. Also great to calm and soothe over excited children. CLOVE-The classic blend of sweet orange oil and clove bud in your vaporizer creates an instant welcoming atmosphere. Sweet orange - uplifting and refreshing gives that extra touch that gives all the oils suggested that extra boost for a perfect blend. Ginger -Great for when you’re finding yourself wanting to head for the couch when you should be preparing your Xmas celebrations. Ginger oil brings clarity, strength and motivation. Just a few drops of bergamot added will soon get you back on your feet. Nutmeg -essential oil has a stimulating action on the brain, combating mental fatigue. Sweet orange -The uplifting and refreshing aroma of sweet orange oil is the perfect choice to blend with any of the above oils it gives that extra touch that gives the perfect blend. Whatever you plan to do during your holidays, put your essential oils to use in a creative way at home, you will enjoy a relaxing and peaceful, aromatic Christmas to purchase any essential oils or for Xmas vouchers. Phone- Sharon 0438676607. WATCH OUT FOR YOUR NEIGHBOURS As the cyclone season approaches please make a quick visit to any of our neighbours who are elderly or have a disability. Elderly people are less likely to read newspapers to find out what services are available and are also more likely to wait in silence for help. 12 BABINDA HOSPITAL MPHS NEWS Walking group has finalised for this year, ending with the group having an early morning get together for breakfast. Staff completed annual assessments to review walkers improvements in endurance, strength and balance. Staff and walkers alike would urge more people to join them next year when it recommences on 19/01/2015, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7am. Just a reminder for when you require any medications. An appointment needs to be made to see a Doctor to have your scripts written. Scripts can not be supplied by phoning your order through to the office. Please take notice of when your scripts need renewing and phone early for your Doctors appointment. With the hot weather well and truly here, please remember to keep well by being hydrated, drink water, fruit juices and even jelly. Also keeping as cool as you can. Christmas Carols at the hospital was a jolly night with lots of singing which was led by the choir. It was really nice to see so many of our residents family join us. I am unable to display all of the photo’s taken, however, below is a small glimpse of the night. A lovely supper was provided, some by our kitchen and some kindly donated. Many thanks to all the organising provided by Mrs. Snitchzling and a small group of loyal volunteers. I should mention that the kind acts throughout the year by these selfless volunteers enriches the lives of our residents and hospital inpatients alike. Many, many thanks go to them. All of us at Babinda Hospital would like to wish everyone a very happy and fulfilling New Year. 13 Info Centre Illuminations Welcome 2015, let it be a joyful & peaceful year. Our powder room is VERY popular, it never ceases to amaze me how some people continue to use their mobile phones the whole time they’re in the room. Although it has been a comparatively dry season, be aware that National Parks regularly close various parks for the wet season. If you are planning a camping trip, best to check with them first. National Parks also advise bush walkers/hikers to consult the Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au for current weather conditions. Recently had a couple who planned to do the Broken Nose, Bartle Frere summit, Goldsborough Valley, and the Walsh’s Pyramid hikes on successive days. Keen hikers? No - in training for the Kokoda Trail. I reminded them of the above (BOM). Incidentally, the same couple commented that they found very useful information on our web site and that it was a good, easily navigated site. Kudos to those who created and update it. Just a reminder that Rotary Park will be closed to campers from 31st January 2015 for approximately 6 weeks while Council kindly upgrades the camping facilities. Please contact Council on 40443044 for further details.
