January 2015 - UKIP Dorset North

Issue no. 102 January 2015
A Happy New Year to all our readers!
Now the festivities are all but over we are straight into the campaigns for both Council and General Elections.
Work is now seriously getting underway around the country. We hope you are well rested and ready to join in.
Every branch is going to need as much help from its supporters and members as is humanly possible. As no doubt
we have mentioned before there will be leafleting, canvassing, displaying correx boards, displaying car and
window stickers, donating funds and some areas will need help in stuffing envelopes. Your branch committee will
be delighted to hear from you. We have scarcely four months till Election Day. This arguably will be the most
important 121 days of our lives – some have compared it with the Battle of Britain. This does not demean the
efforts of the brave aircraft crew in any way. It is a fight for the very existence of our country in the year of the
75th anniversary of that monumental act of courage. We also have what can be compared to a Vichy government
in Westminster. We must stick together and eject those who do the EU’s bidding, enabling us to regain our
country and in time our prosperity and national pride. If we do not get an influential number of Members of
Parliament in May then all will really be lost and the EU will win the day. Whether we could survive after then
will be difficult to predict. So please do what you can to help, however small. It is also important that as many of
you as possible put yourself forward as council candidates in your area – whether Borough, District, Town or
Parish. We need control locally to stem the flow of EU regionalisation.
Be prepared for numerous incidents of bad press. There is a government sponsored department especially digging
deep for anything, however small, with which to smear us. It will happen and is happening. No one is doing the
same for the other EU friendly parties like the Greens, LibDems, Labour or the Conservatives. They will try to
make us defend ourselves rather than discuss the real issues facing this country.
Dorset North readers will be pleased to read that the Conservative MP for North Dorset has announced he will not
seek re-election at the 2015 general election. Bob Walter, who will be nearly 72 by the end of the next
parliament, said he wanted a younger Conservative Party member to represent the constituency. The Shaftesbury
resident was elected to the seat in 1997 and has been re-elected three times over 17 years. Mr Walter currently
leads the United Kingdom delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2014 he was
elected as a Vice President of the Inter Parliamentary Union, the world organisation of parliaments. He is also a
Vice Chairman of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly and previously served as the President of the
Assembly of the Western European Union. The credentials of a Eurosceptic? I don’t think so!
Many months ago the LibDem MP for the Mid Dorset & North Poole constituency, Annette Brooks, said she
would be standing down. The remaining Dorset sitting MPs are all expected to seek re-election.
Turning to other events we have four examples of the EU poking its collective nose where it is not wanted.
If you thought that the EU had resolved the outrage of the crews of fishing boats having to discard fish think
again. Fishermen now have to land the entire catch but anything over their quotas has to go to landfill. This is
scandalous with so many people in the world starving. This will do nothing to preserve fish stocks and will
continue to waste a vital resource. The EU does nothing to improve regulations, people’s livelihoods or the world.
It has been reported that Spain now has 75 airports and that many have been built with EU money – correction yours and my money. Also many are not likely to open as there is no demand for them. This outrage is not
confined to Spain, and similar things are now happening in the former iron curtain countries. In fact nine out of
the 20 airports we have been made to contribute to are unwanted and unused. More EU waste of a mammoth
scale. Would it not also be desirable to make the EU similarly extinct?
The EU has also stuck its solid gold oar into ferries that run in the Baltic and North Seas as well as the English
Channel. As previously reported the EU ordered these ferry companies to use low-sulphur fuel or install costly
sulphur filters from 1st January. This is costing the companies millions of pounds in conversions and higher fuel
costs, and it may also cause damage to their engines. P&0 Ferries estimate an increase of their fuel bills of £30m a
year. Stena Line speaks of £41m increases. Experts say it will cost the industry £300m a year. The UK Chamber
of Shipping warns that less profitable routes may well be axed, and surviving routes’ ticket costs will rise.
The EU also has made new rules forcing small businesses to onerously register, charge and account for VAT in
all other EU states with whom they trade although not within the UK. This applies from January 1st to those
businesses with a turnover of less than £81,000. This will undoubtedly cause many to go out of business.
Dorset North PC Steve Unwin
Save Our Setting
A huge amount of development is taking place with further proposals in the pipeline around the
town of Shaftesbury. So much so that if it all goes through - which it appears the Conservative council will nod
through - the number of houses in this small ancient Saxon hilltop town will have increased by 50% compared to
what it was just two decades ago. The proposals now build the urban sprawl right up to and over the county
boundary into Conservative controlled Wiltshire.
Similar massive increases have taken place in nearby towns and indeed towns all over Dorset and counties all
over the south. In the Rochester by-election the local Tory council have approved a controversial development
of some 5,000 houses in the middle of a bird sanctuary on a site called Lodge Hill, fiercely opposed by UKIP
campaigners.
The sheer scale of these developments is clearly not primarily to provide for local housing needs. The population
of the UK is rising – annual net migration increasing by the size of the population of Southampton. This creates a
huge demand for more housing, with a domino effect in all districts, and North Dorset, along with all the other
districts and towns in this area are being told by Government to take its share.
Faced with strong local opposition to these developments in green belts of land around our towns, it highlights
that the policy of uncontrolled mass EU immigration – engineered by Labour, robustly supported by Lib Dems
and delivered by the Conservatives is not working for local communities in Britain. Everywhere in our rural
communities the theme is the same: our rural settings are being ruined forever, and there is little or no
infrastructure provision. Local schools are packed to breaking point, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get
appointments at doctors surgeries, car parks overflow, there is a lack of local jobs for the new houses being built,
and local democracy is frankly non-existent.
UKIP is the only party to recognise the problem, and provide real solutions: take control of immigration,
introduce legally binding local democracy that cannot be appealed against by greedy developers, and provide
real incentives to encourage development on brownfield sites, instead of the current situation of building on our
precious green fields. Conservatives, Lib Dems and Labour will not tackle this because of their commitment to
the European Union and hatred of real local democracy.
- UKIP will leave the EU, and take back control of our borders.
- UKIP will protect the Green Belt.
- Planning rules will be changed to make it easier to build on brownfield sites instead of greenfield sites and lowinterest bonds to enable decontamination of brownfield sites will be issued.
- Houses on brownfield sites will be exempt from Stamp Duty on first sale and VAT relaxed for redevelopment of
brownfield sites.
- Planning Permission for large-scale developments can be overturned by a referendum triggered by the
signatures of 5% of the District or Borough electors collected within three months.
What the media says:
The Telegraph has reported that outgoing EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy is entitled to £578,000 over the
next three years under rules for retiring EU civil servants. Elsevier also notes that former EU Commission President
Barroso will receive €611,440 while former EU High Representative Cathy Ashton will receive €534,537.
