MISSION STATEMENT
St. Scholastica Academy is a Catholic, all-girls, college-preparatory
high school located in Covington, Louisiana. Founded in 1903, SSA
perpetuates the Benedictine tradition of balancing prayer, work, study,
and community in developing adolescent girls into Christian women
grounded in the Gospel values of the Catholic faith.

What an incredible week! The AdvancED team came to SSA
for a peer review site visit. They spent a couple of days at SSA
verifying that the self-study report that we filed was accurate and
representative of our school. They recommended that we be reaccredited and had some wonderful things to say about our school

This past Wednesday we had three student-athletes sign to play
sports at their chosen colleges for National Signing Day, and
one student has been selected as a preferred walk-on. We also
inducted three alumnae into the St. Scholastica Academy Hall of
Fame. All of these athletes played with great dedication. Our Hall
of Famers are wonderful role models for our current students,
and it was great to have them and their families back on campus
once again.

* CAMPUS NOTES *
* FEAST DAY MASS/8th GRADE INDUCTION: (Blazer Day) 8th Grade parents are invited to attend the
school Mass at 9:00 am honoring St. Scholastica’s Feast Day. Following Mass, the seniors will share their experiences
from their years at SSA and offer words of wisdom to the 8th graders before they (8th graders) are formally inducted
into the SSA Family. Later in the day, all students and faculty members are served a special lunch by Parent Club
members.
* FOOD BANKS ARE IN DIRE NEED: For FEBRUARY let’s do a “Box of Food Over a Box of Chocolate” as
we will be collecting BOXED ITEMS (Tuna and Tuna Helper, Spaghetti kits, Rice-a-Roni, etc). Class spirit points will
be given. Please write grade level on top of items. Your support will help those who are in need in our community.
Items are to be turned into the Front Office and will be split between both the Covington and Samaritan Center Food
Banks.
* SSA ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION’S MARDI GRAS MAMBO: The SSA Alumnae Association invites everyone
to campus to watch the Krewe of Olympia parade on Saturday, February 7 from 4-9 pm. Food and beverages will be
available for purchase, as well as bathroom wristbands. For more information, please contact Mrs. Yvette Cardinale in

SSA STUDENT STANDOUTS
• SSA junior Katherine Stolin has been
volunteering with JoJo’s Hope, a charitable
organization which offers swimming and aquatic
activity programs which are adapted to meet
the need of individuals with mental or physical
limitations.
• SSA senior Juliette St. Romain was selected for a
second time to attend Teen Vogue Fashion University in
New York. In March she will hear and learn first-hand
from top names in the industry about their experiences
in the fashion and business worlds. Thousands of
students between the ages of 16-24 from around the
world apply and only five hundred are selected.

Doreen Picone has been working at SSA for 13 years and is currently the English
Department Chair. She is married with 3 children; 2 girls and a boy.
In her spare time she likes to read, go to the beach, hike in the mountains, swim in the
waterfalls and visit with family and friends.

* PROJECT PROM: The Junior League of Greater
Covington will be collecting gently used floor length or
cocktail dresses, evening shoes, purses, sashes, shawls
and costume jewelry. These items will then be offered

* For forty years, LOUISIANA YOUTH SEMINAR
(LYS) has enriched the lives of high school students across
Louisiana through the development of core leadership
skills and the development of strong character. Since
1971, LYS has benefitted almost 8,000 young men and
women; among them a United States Senator, Louisiana
State Representatives, college professors, business
executives, and community activists. LYS is open to
incoming high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors
and will be held July 19-24, 2015, at LSU in Baton Rouge.

different with praying the rosary. All students,
faculty, staff and parents are asked to take 5
minutes out of their week to say a special prayer

* MAKE-UP TESTS will take place in the cafeteria from this point forward.
* STUDENTS: If you plan on checking out of school during the day for a doctor’s appointment, etc. you
MUST bring a note to the front office before 8:00 a.m. on the day of check out.
* AFTER-SCHOOL HOURS: Students can stay on campus - in the library under supervision- until 5 pm!
Please make other arrangements for your daughter if you cannot pick her up by 5 pm.
* HELP DESK NOTES: Students are reminded that iPads should be charged at home every night. Particular
care should be taken when the devices are plugged into the charging cord. Replacement chargers and cords
may be purchased at Best Buy.
* DMV INFO: If you are planning to go the DMV to get your Driver’s Permit, Driver’s License, or a
Replacement License, you will need a school enrollment verification form from Mrs. Heather Klechak. This
is a DMV policy and you can only get this form from school. Please email Mrs. Klechak at hklechak@ssacad.
org before going to the DMV. You must give Mrs. Klechak at least 24 hours notice to receive this form.
Important Note: Students going to take the road test for their driver’s license must now schedule a time with
the DMV as opposed to just showing up and taking a number. Appointments for road tests will be scheduled
for the following time frame: Monday - Friday from 8:30-10:30 a.m.
