PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The revelry of Mardi Gras is over, and we are beginning that important Lenten
season. If we attended Ash Wednesday services and the first Sunday Mass of
Lent, we probably heard the priest talk about three areas of emphasis that we as
Catholics/Christians should focus upon - Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. We can
take these words literally, and this would transform us as we concentrate on each
important aspect, or we can look at these words a little differently and perhaps
expand our traditional Lenten experience.
The first word is Prayer. There are so many things we could do to fulfill this Lenten
charge: we could go to Mass more often, attend Stations of the Cross, read a daily
Lenten meditation, pray for someone we might be having some conflict with or
just someone we would like to gift with prayer (for the Pope, a teacher, a family
member, or a friend), try a different form of prayer than what we might be used
to, pray the Rosary at SSA on Tuesdays, attend the Communion service at SSA on
Fridays, and any other possibilities you can think of.
Fasting: certainly the traditional fasting from meat with meager meals on Fridays
is an important way of fasting and something that we can all do. How could we
expand or look at this differently? We could refrain from getting sucked into
destructive conversations that we know usually happen with certain people.
We could “fast” from passing along gossip stories. We could “fast” from that
wonderful coffee one day a week and save those monies for Lenten giving. We
could “fast” from hanging on to anger with someone that has been difficult to
resolve. These are just a few ideas. We could look at one, some, or all that we do
during Lent from someone else’s perspective or dedicate everything that we do
for someone else’s benefit (as a prayer gift) to give us a positive approach to Lent.
Almsgiving: We can give money at Sunday Mass in a special way during Lent. We
can make sacrifices and give the money to Operation Rice Bowl, or any other
nonprofit. We can do something for another person - perhaps someone who
is elderly, handicapped, or ill. We can spend time with our family. We can gift
ourselves with some special time that we never seem to have. We can gift ourselves
with a retreat experience, a Lenten mission, or a special spiritual book we have
been saying we were going to read when we get the chance. The ideas are limitless;
we need but prayerfully reflect.
I will pray for you as I hope you will pray for me that we experience a faith-filled,
expanded Lenten experience.
SSA was presented with a wonderful opportunity this week to hear a talk on
chastity by Jason Evert, a national speaker for teens and young adults. An even
more wonderful outcome of this opportunity was that our brother school, St.
Paul’s, offered to be a part of this event and to host it at their place so that both
schools could attend it together. As adults we recognized having both the boys
and the girls in the same room hearing the same message of chastity was powerful
and hopefully will support the students in their abilities to remain chaste and
will start that conversation of chastity instead of letting society dictate what they
should believe about themselves. Thank you for allowing your daughters to have
this experience.
As a compliment to this experience, you as parents will be given the opportunity
to participate in an educational evening presented by Stacy LeBlanc: “Teen Sex
and the Law” hosted by the St. Paul’s Parent Club on Monday, March 23 at 6:30
pm in the SPS Briggs Assembly Center. This presentation is for parents only.
More information will be given as the event draws closer.
In the spirit of St. Scholastica, who could do more because she loved more...

Get to Know the SSA Family!
Nageeha Zaghloul Yazbeck ‘93 has been a religion teacher at SSA for 10 years. She
and her husband, Stephen, have a four year old son and a daughter who was born on
November 17. Mrs. Yazbeck, her mom and sister are all former Golden Blues, so they
have “Golden Blue Pride!” Her mom still has the uniform that she wore and Mrs.
Yazbeck says it is pretty similar to today. She says that the nuns wanted them always
to, “look like ladies out there.”
In her spare time, Mrs. Yazbeck loves to sing in the car, entertain her son, visit friends,
go thrift store shopping with her mom, work out, read, watch T.V., debate issues with
her husband, clip coupons, and pray! Mrs. Yazbeck would like to offer “a huge thank
you to our SSA community for the prayers, cards, meals, gift cards and love that has
been poured out to our family in the time of my husband’s battle with cancer. He
is recovering well and appears to be cancer-free! This school was a huge support of
love during this time and I will always be thankful!”
