VILLAGE VOICE ISSUE 16, FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 ⋄ DISTRIBUTED FREE THROUGHOUT GLEN EDEN Happy New Year to everyone! EXCITING THINGS are planned for Glen Eden in 2015! Look out for the ‘pop-up Village Square’ that is providing an event space on a grass area by the Local Board office. It will be there all summer until April, with an event every week (listed inside or see our Face Book page or website). The photos below are of the launch event on 13th December. A container has been placed nearby to store equipment such as chairs, beanbags, tables, stage and barbecue. Auckland Council and Waitakere Ranges Local Board are funding all this. They will assess if the events should continue next year or if the space could become permanent. The moral of the story? Come and support initiatives that add to our quality of life here. Dancing in the street Thanks to local lawyer Greg Presland for these charming photos Entertainment before our Santa Parade was organised by Glen Eden Business Association and provided by this flash mob* plus face-painters and a band. KEYS LOCKED INSIDE CAR? NO PROBLEM! MEET THE LOCALS Janne Costello reflects on life as Glen Eden Library Manager JANNE COSTELLO has worked in libraries for more than 20 years, originally in Gisborne. “I volunteered at my children’s school library until I could get my foot in the door in a paid position at the local high school,” she explained. In 2004 she moved to Auckland, joining Glen Eden Library in 2013. Janne is clearly a hands-on manager. “I try and do a couple of desk shifts every day, which I love. Being out on the floor helping and chatting with our customers is why we enjoy doing what we do.” Libraries now are very different to those of yesteryear. “I think the main challenge is trying to maintain a welcoming environment that suits the needs of our diverse community. “Libraries these days are very much a community space so it is making sure there are the right spaces for children, youth and adults to use and feel comfortable in, with acceptable noise levels so that those who are working or studying can do that too.” Eighteen staff cover the six days and everyone has a variety of tasks. One challenge they have is keeping abreast of new technology so they can handle a wide range of digital queries confidently, and keep offering computer classes and one-on-one sessions. Library work has its lighter side. “One customer came to the front desk and said ‘I love Glen Eden Library and I love the staff, they’ll help you do anything. They help you request books, they help you find information and they even helped me break into my car when I locked the keys inside!’ I think that might be regarded as going the extra mile with customer service!” Janne laughed. It’s a question begging to be asked: what does a librarian read for Janne Costello (standing, second from right) with about half her team in the library pleasure? “Surprisingly, yes, I do enjoy reading a good book in my spare time,” said Janne. “I read mainly modern contemporary fiction, especially American and Canadian writers, and I also love a good crime novel. Open Mon–Fri 8.30am–6pm, Sat 9am–1pm. www.hollingscarepluspharmacy.co.nz We are proud and excited to announce the launch of our “Summer in Glen Eden” event series in collaboration with Glen Eden Business Association. This is a great opportunity for residents of Glen Eden and beyond to enjoy their town centre, listen to music, watch a performance, take part in art and sports activities, and have a good time with their families and friends. We will host those events in the space near the Local Board office in Glenmall Place, which will receive regular make-overs to become a village green, a civic square, a concert venue or a playground. Many of the ideas for these have come from people who took part in the successful Tidy Town Day. During events, the exit road from the carpark will be closed, and there will be deviation towards Oates Road and Captain Scott Road. We hope this small inconvenience will be well worth it for the community and local businesses. We look forward to seeing you! Check out the notice board on the container, at the Local Board office or at Glen Eden library for updates.
