One Approach.
HALLMARKS OF THE
RAMAPO APPROACH
Ramapo’s work is grounded in a set
of guiding principles that have emerged
from decades of experience providing
direct service and a consistent track record
of clearly demonstrated effectiveness:
пЃµ P ersonal relationships are the capital
that motivates behavioral change, and relationship
building is a set of skills and activities that can
be taught.
пЃµ O bservational learning and role modeling
are powerful teaching tools when adults model
desired behaviors intentionally, both individually
and as a team.
Through direct service youth programs and
highly regarded training programs for adults,
Ramapo for Children works on behalf of
children who face obstacles to learning,
enabling them to succeed in the classroom,
at home, and in life.
At the heart of our work is the conviction
that all children seek the same things:
to learn, feel valued and experience success.
Ramapo helps young people learn to align
their behaviors with their aspirations.
пЃµ T houghtful rituals and routines can teach
desired behaviors and are important elements
in establishing emotionally safe environments,
and must be adapted to the particular needs
of individual children and groups.
пЃµ T he collective celebration of individual
accomplishments is a defining characteristic
of supportive communities, and adults must identify
opportunities to celebrate individual success.
пЃµ H onest feedback and open communication
are key catalysts for personal development,
and adults must understand how to have difficult
conversations constructively.
пЃµ t he habit of reflective practice must be
adopted by both adults and young people, taking
the time to process and reflect alone and with
other members of the community.

. Broad Impact.
Self-Reflection and the
Pursuit of Excellence
Ramapo is an organization dedicated to helping people
overcome personal obstacles and fulfill their potential.
One of the core tenets of our approach is an emphasis on
the habit of reflective practice—taking the time to process,
reflect on, and learn from our experiences. The exercise
must be done with an open mind and a commitment to
continuous growth and learning.
Ramapo is expanding. We are supporting more families
and working with more schools and educators in more
places than ever before, and we are proud of this growth.
We understand, however, that expanding scope and scale
brings a heightened responsibility to practice what we
preach with regard to reflective practice.
For Ramapo, reflective practice goes hand in hand with
dedicating ourselves to continuous improvement. It starts
with having clearly articulated goals. In that spirit, we’ve
chosen to share some simple logic models in this year’s
annual report. It also requires a commitment to rigorous
evaluation: gathering data, measuring the extent to which
our goals are being achieved, and using the information to
make our programs and services more effective. It means
scouring the landscapes of education and human service for
research that can help inform our work, or program models
from which we can learn. Most importantly, modeling reflective practice means never becoming complacent and always
sustaining an unwavering commitment to excellence.
An annual report is, in many ways, a written exercise
in reflective practice. As we look back on all we have
accomplished over the last year, one thing is clear:
None of it would have happened without the passion,
commitment and support of our staff, our board members,
our funders, our alumni, our organizational partners and
program participants and their families. We cannot thank
you enough.

Ramapo Helps Adults Support
the Children They Serve
Ramapo provides tools and tactics to teachers,
youth-service workers and parents, enabling them to
create environments that promote positive behavior.
“Ramapo for Children provides
practical, hands-on training in behavior
management, supervision and program
design. We have wait lists for most
of their trainings. Their facilitators
are highly skilled and knowledgeable
about adult learning principles.”

PARTNERSHIP WITH
URBAN ASSEMBLY
In the fall of 2012, Ramapo
embarked on a partnership
with the Urban Assembly
network of schools in New
York City to provide four
schools in the network
with a range of supports,
including training and
coaching for teachers,
team building retreats for
educators and students,
and direct support at Camp
Ramapo for the schools’
most high-needs children.
When the partnership
began, these schools had
reported the highest rates
of behavioral incidents and
suspensions in the entire
Urban Assembly network.
By the year’s end, they
showed a 33% reduction
in suspensions and a 40%
reduction in incidents overall
compared to the previous
year. Principal Jeff Chetirko
of Urban Assembly Institute
of New Technologies in
Harlem said, “Ramapo had
a huge part in the cultural
shift that took place at
New Tech. Students began
taking ownership of their
education and discussing
issues instead of resorting
to violence.”
Ramapo’s partnership
with Urban Assembly demonstrates how the Ramapo
Approach, when brought to
bear on behalf of teachers
and students alike, can
help transform school
cultures, promote positive
behavioral change, foster
skill development and support learning and personal
growth.

Learn and Grow
Ramapo instills self-confidence and self-reliance
in children, allowing them to build peer relationships,
try new things and experience success.
“Each of the three summers that
our son has attended Ramapo,
he has come back standing a little
taller and prouder. Ramapo has
helped boost his self-confidence
and independence.”

TANIYA, CAMPER
Eight year-old Taniya came to
Camp Ramapo in the summer
of 2011 and has returned
each year since. As a result
of her anxiety and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD), Taniya doesn’t
always understand social
boundaries and sometimes
uses humor inappropriately
as a way to try to fit in with
others. Although she is very
social, Taniya has difficulty
connecting with others.
At camp, she bonded with
a counselor named Lupe,
who worked with her on
improving her social skills
and learning the limits of
appropriate behavior. The
two discussed the issue
and developed a signal for
Lupe to give Taniya when
she needed to behave more
calmly. As a former camper,
Lupe relates to children like
Taniya particularly well and
is adept at helping them
with the challenges they
face. With Lupe’s support,
Taniya gained a better
understanding of how to
communicate with others
and build relationships.
She grew more comfortable
in social settings and was
calmer at home following
her time at camp.
In the carefully structured
setting of Camp Ramapo,
with its one-to-one staff-tocamper ratio, Taniya and
other children with social,
emotional and learning
challenges are able to
experience success. At
home, Taniya often talks
about her time at Ramapo.
One day, she hopes to follow
in Lupe’s footsteps and
become a Camp Ramapo
counselor herself.

Ramapo Helps Young Adults
Achieve Self-Sufficiency
Ramapo develops the independent living,
job and social skills of young adults while building
their self-determination and resilience.
“At first I wasn’t so sure about the
program, but I feel like I’ve achieved
a lot. I’m developing my social skills,
learning to trust others, and becoming
more trustworthy myself. This is
helping me make the right friends
who are positive influences in my life
and who actually care about me.”

DANNY, STAFF ASSISTANT
When Danny (above left)
joined the Staff Assistant
Experience in 2012, she had
difficulty communicating
effectively and connecting
with people she didn’t know.
This made activities like
participating in job interviews
challenging. At Ramapo,
Danny found a supportive
and social community, as
well as a mentor who
helped her to improve her
communication skills. Danny
worked in the campus dining
hall and utilized a vocational
coach to build job skills.
After a few months, Danny
interned at a local cafГ©, Taste
Budd’s, where she rose to the
challenge of new tasks and
eventually became a paid
employee. The café’s owner
said, “Danny has blown us all
away with her ability to take
on a very important role in the
kitchen. While Taste Budd’s is
a great place to work, she is
responsible for her success.”
Today Danny works full-time
at Taste Budd’s and feels
ready to live independently.
On reflection, Danny said that
she had long known that she
had the ability to achieve her
goals, but needed a place
that would recognize her
strengths, push her to do
her best and provide a
supportive community.
The Staff Assistant
Experience provides a
positive environment and
a network of mentors,
coaches and friends for
young adults who face
challenges in transitioning to
independence. To date, the
program has formed 20 local
business partnerships to
help young people like Danny
gain work experience, build
vocational skills and develop
a future orientation.

Achieve Collective Goals
Ramapo teaches leadership, conflict resolution and
cooperation skills to groups of youth, educators
and other professionals, enabling them to improve their
communication, collaboration and connections.
“The kids and staff had a great
time. Their only complaint
is that we had to leave. Many
of the kids wanted to stay and
enjoy the natural environment.
It was amazing to see so
many of our reluctant learners
access their leadership skills
in the Ramapo environment.

WORKING WITH THE LIBERTY
PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
For over ten years, the Liberty
Partnership Program at
LaGuardia Community College
has been bringing groups of high
school students to Ramapo for
retreats. The Liberty Partnership
program provides enrichment
to at-risk youth, with the goal of
helping them finish high school.
Many of these young people
grow up in lower income urban
areas and some have never been
outside of New York City before.
At our Rhinebeck campus, they
participate in challenging teambuilding exercises such as high
and low ropes course activities,
as well as other fun, shared
experiences that build trust and
leadership skills. Ramapo’s
expert facilitators support the
participants throughout the
retreat, leading discussions
and helping them to learn
lessons that they can apply to
their own lives. The students
form bonds with others in their
group, building a strong sense of
community and shared purpose.
Liberty Partnership Program
Director Sean Galvin emphasized
the far-reaching effects of
Ramapo Retreats, saying,
“There’s something special in
terms of bonding, and building
confidence and self-esteem,
that can be accomplished in the
intensive setting at Ramapo.
While there’s an immediate
high from completing things
like the ropes courses, the real
effects hit these young people
a few months–or even years–
later.” At Ramapo, these young
adults learn lasting lessons
about collaboration, honest
communication and committing
to do one’s best. They achieve
things that they never thought
possible, and take their
newfound strengths, insights and
inspiration home with them.

Survey Shows Reach of Ramapo’s
Impact on Summer Counselor Alumni
Last fall, Ramapo conducted an extensive survey of our
summer counselor alumni, with the goal of finding out
how they viewed their experiences working at Ramapo and
the extent to which their time with Ramapo influenced
them going forward. Over 500 alums from 48 states and
15 countries responded, and the results showed that the
vast majority view their work at Ramapo as having been
a formative and often life-altering experience.
