Tuina: a Chinese Medical Massage Handbook by Dr. Lu, for students and practitioners. Pain management is Dr. Lu’s doctoral degree focus. His comprehensive treatment includes acupuncture, herbs and tuina medical massage. Combining these modalities renders quicker and better results than just using a single modality such as massage, acupuncture or chiropractic treatment. Because pain is usually not caused by muscle or joints or spine problems alone, comprehensive treatment addressing all the problems together is very important. Some of the services we are proud to offer here at Dr. Lu’s are: Acupuncture: One of the many different types of treatments for pain within traditional Chinese medicine. We take a thin, sterile, needle and insert them into very precise points on the body to trigger your body’s natural vital energy that promotes healing and relaxation. Chinese Herbal Therapy: Play a very important role in Chinese medicine. In China, herbal remedies are still seen as the focal point of medicine for treating patients. Usually containing 5-15 herbs specified to the individuals condition, herbal remedies promote healing and tend to have much less side effects than taking pharmaceuticals. Tuina Massage: A form of manual medicine and is still often times used in clinics and hospitals in China today. Tuina massage is lmost like combining both chiropractic care and physical therapy into one. Tuina promotes circulation, increases joint flexibility, and balances the yin-yang functions of internal organs. About Kayle Seitz, M.Ac.O.M, L.Ac. I believe the body has an amazing ability to heal itself; I’m passionate about helping others to not only overcome illness and disease, but to prevent it. I want to enter into a healing relationship with patients; the best healing is that which the patient is involved in, thus empowering patients with knowledge–a healing partnership that is trusting, private, respectful, and personalized, allowing people to take control of their own health and thus be able to live life to its fullest. I Love the outdoors, and the way nature is just a larger picture of the way our bodies function. My collegiate activity in Cross Country and Track & Field drew me closer to finding Traditional Chinese Medicine as my career path. I quickly noticed not only my own frustration, but also that of all my fellow athletes, with the fact that “ice and rest” is often the only treatment strategy available. When I discovered how TCM offered an alternative which was unknown to me until then–a medicinal practice that understands and treats the root causes of symptoms. I knew I had to learn more. Pain Relief and Pain Management Pain management is Dr. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine play an important role in relieving pain, and gives us a valuable alternative for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted an extensive review of the scientific evidence for acupuncture in 1997. According to the panel, there is clear evidence in support of acupuncture’s efficacy for chronic conditions that benefit from the control of pain and inflammation, enhanced circulation, endocrine and immune function and the reduction of stress. Overview of neck, shoulder, and back pain Neck pain is a common medical condition that occurs in the area of the seven cervical vertebrae of the neck. The neck and shoulder contain a variety of structures, including muscles, nerves, bones, and ligaments. Back and neck pain can come on rapidly and intensely, meaning it is acute, or can last for years, meaning it is chronic. This pain often varies from patient to patient in whether it is constant or intermittent. What causes neck, shoulder, and back pain? Neck, back, and shoulder pain can be caused by a variety of factors. At Dr. Lu’s Acupuncture and Massage Clinic in Portland and Vancouver, we see patients who suffer from this pain due to many issues, including: Sudden Force/Automobile Accident Degenerative Disc Disease Overuse/Improper Use Osteoporosis Neck Strain Medical Condition: Swelling, Tumors, etc. Degenerative Arthritis Whiplash Muscle Tension or Spasm Bone Spur Herniated or Protruding Disk Pinched Nerve Oriental and Chinese Medicine, an acupuncturist often finds the main cause of acute neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain is the stagnation, or blockage, of Qi (vital energy) and blood in the meridians or damp-cold (external environmental factors) retention in the meridians. In chronic cases, this type of pain can be caused by a deficiency of the energetic functional organs, such as Kidney, Liver, or Spleen. What are the other symptoms associated with neck, shoulder, and back pain? There are many different ways neck and shoulder pain can manifest. The pain may be sharp, dull, stabbing, or burning. Pain can lead to stiff neck, shoulder, or back, often causing limited range of motion in the joints. Besides pain in the neck, back, and shoulder, pain may also radiate to other areas of the body causing arm pain, jaw pain, head pain or ear pain. Some patients’ neck pain also causes associated symptoms of nausea, headache, weakness, numbness, swelling, deformity, difficulty swallowing, or dizziness. Diagnosis of neck, shoulder, and back pain To start with, a full review of history of symptoms is used for the diagnosis of neck pain This includes how and when the pain began, things that make the neck and shoulder pain better or worse, quality of the pain, location and radiation of pain, severity of pain, and associated symptoms. At Dr. Lu’s Acupuncture and Massage Clinic in Portland and Vancouver, we use a variety of physical exams, including orthopedic exams, along with palpation of tenderness in the neck and back and range of motion.
